What is expected from a Dental
Assistant? Good Teamwork - The efficiency of a dental clinic is based on the teamwork between the dentist and his/her assistants Before the patient is admitted to the operating room the dental assistant should: – Remove materials left over from previous patient – The chair arms, the waste receptacle and cuspidor should be clean – The patient’s dental charts and other important records should be ready for the dentist – The chair should be in position – The head rest, inclination of the chair should be for the average person Training Technics The assistant should: • Stand behind the chair while the patient is being seated • Backrest should be inclined until the it is in line with the lower part of the shoulder blades • Headrest should be adjusted • Inclination of the chair varies according to the procedure 5. All necessary instruments should be placed on the bracket table 6. Pilot light should be turned on and adjusted Securing Dental Operating Spaces I. Dental Chair 1. Clean and polish the upholstered parts 2. Put on clean headrest covers 3. Bring the chair to lowest and most basic position II. Dental Unit 1. Clean and polish with non abrasive metal 2. The waste trap in cuspidor should be emptied and cleaned 3. Clean and polish bright the cuspidor 4. Put off electric switch 5. Put out bunsen burner 6. Put off the supply to the cuspidor 7. Put off compressed air III. Room in General 1. Clean towels, gauze and cotton rolls should be ready for the next day 2. Shades are lowered half-way into the windows 3. Put off all electrical devices 4. Doors and windows should be locked 5. All electric gas, and adequate switches should be turned off. 6. Keys of equipment should be in proper place 7. Towels and tissues should be ready for the next day IV. Reception Room and Appointment Desk 1. Furniture and fixtures should be cleaned and polished 2. Drinking fountain should be cleaned 3. Computer should not be visible 4. Clock must be set 5. Keep lavatories cleaned V. Prosthetic Laboratory 1. Put off burn-furnaces, water baths, vacular, boil-out tanks, lathes and dental medicines 2. Put off and polish the lathe blower 3. Close the air and gas valves 4. Check and fill the plastic artificial stones 5. Clean and store crucible rings and flasks 6. Tools should be returned to the instrument drawer 7. Clean the boil out tank and remove the wax residue 8. Eliminate waxes from casting ovens
