Marasmus is one component of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM).

It is a severe form of
malnutrition caused by inadequate intake of protein and calories, and it usually occurs in the first
year of life, resulting in wasting and growth retardation.

The major factors that cause Marasmus:

• the transition from breastfeeding to nutrition-poor foods in infancy


• acute infections of the gastrointestinal tract
• chronic infections such as HIV or tuberculosis
• Lack of food in a family,

Signs and Symptoms of Marasmus

Growth retardation
Muscle Wasting
Impaired immunity
Lethargy
Vomiting
Delayed wound healing
Loss of fat stores
Weight loss

Treatment of Marasmus

• Diet should contain adequate calorie, high protein.carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins etc..
• Prevention is a complex arid difficult problem. Education of mothers that they will
continue breast feeding for as long as possible is of the greatest importance.
• Weight should be recorded after every fortnight. Gradually solid foods bake boiled rice,
fish, vegetables etc. are to be added
• Treatment of intercurrent infection, if present.
• Treatment of identifying cause.
