Windows Vista has modest minimum system requirements that everyone with a
system from within the last 5 years should have no problem meeting. Simply adding more system memory (RAM) is the
most anyone with a less than 5 year old system should have to do to meet them. The most noticeable change with Windows
Vista will be the new Aero interface and for that you will need an Aero-capable DirectX 9-class graphics card. This is what the
majority of older systems will need upgrades for. Since this is one of the main reasons to get Windows Vista just about
everyone should avoid the Vista Home Basic and Vista Standard Editions since neither supports the new Aero interface. The
various editions of Windows Vista can make a purchasing decision rather confusing. Advanced users can look at The Windows
Vista Secret Decoder Ring andUnderstanding the Vista Product Editions to get an overview of the main features in each
edition. Most users will fall into one of the following categories:
If you cannot make up your mind and have the money Windows Vista Ultimateincludes every feature from all the editions.
Notes - Physical CPUs are per socket. Every edition of Windows Vista supports Multi-Core, Hyper-threading and 64-bit
(x64) CPUs. All retail versions exceptVista Ultimate will only be 32-bit (x86) out of the box. To obtain the 64-bit (x64)
version, you will have to contact Microsoft or purchase the 64-bit (x64) OEM version. The retail version of Vista
Ultimate includes both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions. All OEM versions of Windows Vista have licensing
restrictions that prevent it from being transferred to another computer once activated. This will be enforce with the Windows
Software Protection Platform.

Microsoft posted relatively modest system requirements (at least for any computer belonging to a Tom’s Hardware reader)
when it released the Windows 7 public beta in January and only slightly modified them for the release of yesterday’s Release
Candidate.
The system requirements for the beta at the time called for:
While the system requirements posted yesterday apply to the Release Candidate, Microsoft told ZDNet that they were ‘final’,
though it’s unknown if there will be different requirements between different SKUs such as Starter Edition or Ultimate Edition.
“The system requirements are final and not SKU-specific,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.
Those who plan to run XP Mode will need at least 2 GB RAM, 15 GB of additional hard drive space and a processor that
supports hardware virtualization.
According to early tests, Windows 7 performs better than Windows Vista on the same hardware.
"It's been a long time since we've had a version of Windows that will actually run better [than the previous version] on the
hardware that most customers have," Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows product management
group, said during a conference call with reporters, quoted byComputerWorld.
Windows 7 does carry with it slightly heftier system requirements than Vista does, despite it being a better performer. From
one generation to the next – and three years later – Windows 7’s system demands does seem positively modest.
