PHONETICS WORKSHOP

WORKSHOP 1:

AIM:

The aim of this workshop is to provide students with further practice in the articulation
and phonological description of vowels 1 /i:/ and 2 /I/.

METHODOLOGY:

Sensitisation:

• Students listen to the articulation of minimal pairs.

• Students listen to the oral reading of phonological transcription of sentences that
only contain the phoneme under study in the discourse context.
• Students listen to the oral reading of the phonological transcription of sentences
in which the phoneme under study is contrasted with other phonemes in the
discourse context.

Imitation:

• Students are given opportunities to practise vowels 1 and 2 by repeating the oral
reading of the exercises they have heard in the Sensitisation section, but this
time covering their correspondent phonological transcription.

• Students listen carefully as they compare their responses with the model
responses on the cassette.

Practice activities:

• Tasks. From Fonética Inglesa para Españoles: vowel 1 -Phoneme /i:/-: pages
46-47 (d, f, g, h, i). Vowel 2 –Phoneme /I/-: pages 48-51 (d, e, f, g, h, i).

• When students feel happy with their oral responses, they will record them on
their own CD, in which they will keep record of the twelve workshops that will
be carried out throughout the first semester.

NB: Please remember that the CD recorded tasks are part of the oral assessment of the
subject. The CD will be handed over to the Lecturer on the examination day.
