One Paragraph Essay

Dumpster Divers: The Urban Archeologist.

“On Dumpster Diving” is an essay by Lars Eighner about one man’s thoughts on the action of

taking peoples garbage for personal use. While reading this essay one might find their

preconceived notions of the dumpster diving lifestyle shaken or completely obliterated. His

beginnings came out of desperation. As money started to run thin he began to collect the garbage

of others to feed and clothe himself, however he soon began discovering much more than just the

bare necessities.“Boom boxes, candles, bedding, dishes, furnishings, and change, sometimes

amounting to many dollars,” (358) were among the many things Eighner mentions in his writing.

What starts as a last ditch attempt at urban survival gradually turns into a modern treasure hunt

as Eighner breaks down the stigma surrounding his lifestyle and opens the reader up to the real

adventure and everyday surprises of dumpster diving.
