Nadia Comaneci

Nadia Elena Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast, winner of


three Olympic gold medals at the 1976 Summer Olympics,
and the first gymnast ever to be awarded a perfect score
of 10 in an Olympic gymnastic event. She is also the
winner of two gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
She is one of the best-known gymnasts in the world In
2000 Comăneci was named as one of the athletes of the
century by the Laureus World Sports Academy
 

At the age of 14, Nadia became one


of the stars of the 1976 Summer
Olympics in Montreal. During the
team portion of the competition, her
routine on the uneven bars was
scored at a 10.0. It was the first
time in modern Olympic gymnastics
history that the score had ever been
awarded. The scoreboards were not
even equipped to display scores of
10.0—so Nadia's perfect marks were
reported on the boards as 1.00
instead.
Elisabeta Lipa

Elisabeta Lipă (born October 26,


1964 in Siret, Suceava) is a retired
rower from Romania, who was born
under the name of Elisabeta
Oleniuc. She is the most decorated
rower in the history of the
Olympics, winning five golds, two
silvers and one bronze. She holds
the record amongst rowers for the
most years between gold medals, at
20 years.
Elisabeta Lipă debuted at the age of 19 at the 1984 Summer
Olympics in Los Angeles, California, where she won her first gold
medal in the Double Scull event. She won her most recent gold
medal in the eight-oared boat at the Athens Summer Olympics in
2004. She is the only person to win a gold medal in the two
premiere rowing events: the single scull and the eight oared boat.
She is also one of very few women to win a gold medal in both a
sculling (two oars per person) and a sweep (one oar per person)
event
Gabriela Szabo
Gabriela Szabo (born November 14,
1975 in Bistriţa) is a Romanian track
and field athlete, winner of the gold
medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics
in 5000 m and winner of bronze and
silver medals in 1996 Summer
Olympics and 2000 Summer Olympics
in 1500 m, respectively.
Szabo is also a three-time
world champion. She
always had a single coach,
Zsolt Gyöngyössy, whom
she eventually married. In
May 2005 she announced
her withdrawal from
professional sport. She
remains the European
record holder over 3000
m.
She retired from
athletics in 2005 amid
health problems and a
decline in her
performance, citing
exhaustion.
Ivan Patzaichin

Ivan Patzaichin is with one of


the most famous Romanian
abroad. Born on November 26,
1949 in Mile 23 area of Tulcea,
the brilliant Patzaichin managed
to gather seven career Olympic
medals in the five editions of
the Games attended (Mexico
1968, Munich 1972, Montreal
1976, Moscow 1980 and Los
Angeles 1984 ).
He won over 25 national
championship titles, was
champion Balkan international
medals in almost every
kingdom attended. But the
older he got Olympics where
he won four Olympic gold
medals and three silver, Nadia
Comaneci after being crowned
the Olympic sport of our
country, and stood three
times in second place. His
record in May totaling 23
other medals at World and
European Championships, 9
gold, 4 silver and 10
bronze.
Ion Tiriac
Ţiriac first appeared on the international
sports scene as an ice hockey player on
the Romanian national team at the 1964
Winter Olympics. Shortly after that he
switched to tennis as his main sport. With
fellow Romanian Ilie Năstase he won the
men's doubles in the 1970 French Open
and reached the Davis Cup finals several
times in the 1970s

In 1983, he became a tennis manager;


above all, he managed Boris Becker from
1984 to 1993. In 1998 he became
president of the Romanian National
Olympic Committee.
Ţiriac ran major men's events in
Germany, including the season-
ending championships in Hanover.
Although tennis is now a much
smaller part of his portfolio and
occupies only 5 percent of his
time, he has taken particular
pleasure and pride in making
Madrid Tennis Open a combined
men's and women's event with €7.2
million in total prize money.Ţiriac
also has held the license for the
BCR Open Romania tennis
tournament since 1996. It is
currently a €450,000 event, part
of the ATP World Tour 250 series,
hold annually in Bucharest,
Romania. The 2009 winner was
Albert Montañés.
Ilie Nastase
Ilie Năstases a Romanian former
professional tennis player, one of the
world's top players of the 1970s.
Năstase was the World No. 1 tennis
player between 1973 (August 23) and
1974 (June 2). He is one of the five
players in history to win more than
100 ATP professional titles (57
singles and 45 in doubles). He was
inducted into the International Tennis
Hall of Fame in 1991. Năstase won
seven Grand Slam titles: two in
singles, three in men's doubles, and
two in mixed doubles. He also won
four ATP World Tour Finals
championships.
At the beginning of his
career in 1966 Năstase
travelled around the world
competing with his good
friend Ion Ţiriac.
Together, they represented
Romania in the Davis Cup
competition, being three
times runners up: in 1969,
1971 and 1972.
In singles, Năstase won his
first tournament at Cannes
on April 16, 1967. His first
victories at top players
happened in 1969 in
Stockholm, where he
defeated Tony Roche and
Stan Smith.
Năstase became one of the
best players in 1970, with
many experts ranking him
as the sixth best player in
the world at that time
after the Australians Rod
Laver, Ken Rosewall, John
Newcombe, and Roche and
the American Ashe.
