EAR HISTOLOGY

DEMO SLIDES
EAR (50X)
• SHOWS THE EXTERNAL EAR
• NOTE: IT IS LINED BY SKIN THAT CONTAINS HAIR FOLLICLES AND CERUMINOUS
GLANDS, ALSO TAKE NOTE OF THE EXTERNAL AUDITORY MEATUS
• ALSO SHOWS THE EAR DRUM AND PART OF THE MALLEUS THAT ABUTS ON THE
EAR DRUM
• THE CAVITY THAT CONTAINS THE MALLEUS IS THE MIDDLE EAR

COCHLEA (100X)
• Spiral tunnel that is 30-34mm long, it coils 2 ½ to 2 ¾ turns around
a piece of bone (MODIOLUS) to form a structure that look like a snail

MODIOLUS

MODIOLUS
• Serves as a pillar around
which the cochlea spirals,
consist of spongy bone
• Conical and constructed
like a screw that has a
spiral thread projecting
from its lateral surface
• Contains spinal ganglion
that is made up of cell
bodies of bipolar sensory

CRISTA AMPULLARIS- INSIDE THE SEMICIRCULAR CANAL
• each rest on a transverse ridge of supporting CT OSSEOUS
that projects into the cavity of the ampulla of its
semicircular canal LABYRINTH
• Consist of two type of cells: supporting cells and hair cells ( sensory cells)
• Crista detect angular acceleration and deceleration of the head
