Did the truth ever come out? Did the accusation leave a stain, meaning: did people still believe your guilt even after proved innocent?

Journal #19 Have you ever been falsely accused of something? How did you react? If you haven t, how do you think you would react? Would you be defensive, maybe bordering on belligerence? Or would you be passive in hopes that the truth would come out? Do you think guilt and innocence reflects in a person s reaction to an accusation? Explain your answer.

God sees the truth but bides His time. What does this quote mean? Would Aksenof agree or disagree with it? Support your answer with details from the story.
Guilty or Innocent?
You are trying to determine whether or not Aksenof is guilty or innocent of the crime. Of course, every case needs evidence, which seems to be piled up against Aksenof. But lawyers also consider a person s character (is Aksenof the type of person to commit murder?).
Directions: Directions: complete the chart below. Identify evidence against Aksenof, as well as his reaction that made him seem guilty. Then, identify some character traits that would show Aksenof is not the type to commit murder. You may identify traits while he is imprisoned.

Makar begs for forgiveness, but Aksenof does not oblige. Without forgiveness, Makar confesses his crime goes completely against his character (a lifetime liar, cheat, and criminal).
Aksenof does not turn in Makar, thus not resolving the conflict between the two. Aksenof dies once Makar tells the truth; Aksenof has let go of all his earthly desires, including freedom.

TRUE/FALSE: The Piece of String Hauchercorne lies to the mayor about picking up the wallet. The mayor questions Hauchercorne and lets him go. Hauchecorne thinks he will be believed innocent when the wallet is returned. Hauchercorne worries about what his neighbors think of him. As he nears death, Hauchrcorne finds inner peace.
Reading Check
Short Answer: The Long Exile How does Aksenof make it difficult to believe his innocence when he is questioned by authorities? Why does Makar confess his old crime to authorities?
Letter
Pretend that you are Aksenof and have heard about Hauchecorne s false accusation. Pretend that you know he is an innocent man. As Aksenof, write a letter to Hauchecorne about what you have heard. Summarize how the situations are similar. Be sure your letter connects to the theme people can only find peace within themselves. What type of advice would Aksenof give? Letter requirements: At least 10 sentences in length. Edit for grammatical errors. Use thought transitions! Complete a final draft on a piece of construction paper. Contain specific details from both stories. Show an understanding of theme and how it differs between two characters/stories. Creativity will earn extra credit points.
