Breeding Improvement Programme

A Practical Milk Development Council Farm Improvement Programme

Selective breeding, or genetic improvement has been responsible for around half the 1600 litres of milk and 120 kg of fat and protein increase in average Holstein Friesian heifer yields over the past 20 years. The new breeding+ programme is your key to raising your herds profitability through a strategic approach to breeding your cows. Improvements made through breeding are far less obvious than those achieved by changes in either feeding or management. But they are permanent. They build-up through each succeeding generation and are every bit as essential for herds coping with mounting environmental, welfare and financial pressures. breeding+ ties together the evaluations work MDC already carries out with new ways to implement this work on-farm and realise greater profits. Developed with a panel of leading British dairy breeding advisers and practitioners, the breeding+ workbook is set out in easy-to-read sections you can either dip into as a reference whenever required or use in a structured way to underpin your own herd programme.

It follows the same structure as our breeding+ Five Step Improvement Plan, assessing the technical tools available and the best way of using them to bring about the desired improvements. Wherever possible we have developed Worksheets so you can make your own simple herd breeding assessments, evaluations and calculations, together with a series of Fact Sheets to provide more information on specific topics. Our Extension Officer team will be holding a range of local initiatives and activities with breeding+ to make this resource as useful and widely available as possible. We shall be reviewing and improving the programme on a regular basis, and look forward to receiving your views and thoughts on how we can make it better suit your particular needs. from the MDC Farm Management Team
