Went to college at Stanford but never actually graduated. He left Stanford without a degree of any kind.
Started his career somewhat obscure and unknown. His first few works were not very prominent. His first
big break was with Tortilla Flats, which became a best seller overnight. This success continued to
snowball throughout the rest of his career.
He also won the Nobel Prize in 1962. John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his
realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humor and keen social perception".
Most of his novels center around the hardship and struggles that Americans, mainly in the Midwest, had to
suffer through during his time period. Also, his writing style was very unconventional and he
experimented with his works.
