ABSTRACT Mobile number portability (MNP)

Mobile number portability gives users the ability to change his service provider without changing his number. This encourages the customer to enjoy better quality of service and better tariffs while at the same time operators are burdened with extra costs of implementing MNP, serious efforts to retain their high revenue generating customers. Number portability enables a subscriber to switch between services, locations, or operators while retaining the original telephone number, without compromising on quality, reliability, and operational convenience. There are three basic types of number portability: operator, location, and service portability. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) wants operators to make their network accessible to Lawful Interception and Monitoring (LIM) for the security agencies after they switch to mobile number portability (MNP) mechanism next month-end.
