Nursing Considerations and Teaching

Adverse effects: palpitations, abdominal cramping, bloating, excessive bowl activity, flatulence, perianal irritation. dizziness and fainting Other: sweating, weakness.

Nursing considerations: Watch for GI symptoms in patient that indicate intolerance to the medication. These include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, Encourage staying mobile and active, fluids, and bulk in diet. Before administration of medication check for abdominal distention, bowel sounds, and ask if any GI symptoms have been present. Patient teaching: Patient should be taught that laxatives are for short term use only and long term use could cause imbalances in their electrolytes or dependence.
