The Myers-Briggs Theory

The Myers-Briggs method was developed over a period of forty years by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Cook Briggs, and grew from their encounters, starting in 1923, with the ideas of the great Swiss philosopher C.G. Jung. Their system is called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI.

The above table describes the 8 basic type "preferences." The way you take in data is described in the first two letters of the type (IS, IN, ES, EN) and the way you make decisions is described in the second two letters (TJ, TP, FP, FJ), for a possible of 16 type

combinations. For example, ISTJs and ESTJs are Introverted and Extroverted Sensing Thinking Judging types. A study on IT Dynamics found more ISTJs and ESTJs than any other type in their sampling of IT professionals. The study finds that the IT personality differs significantly from the general population. This suggests a potential mismatch between IT professionals and the users that they serve who are predominately "feelers" and "perceivers." In order to serve the needs of end users IT people may need to consciously develop their non-preferences, not to mention communicating with people in other kinds of businesses.
