    The Jade Emperor decided to assign animals to each year of the zodiac cycle. To attend a meeting, animals had to cross a river. Rat rode on Ox's back but then pushed Cat into the water and jumped ahead to claim first place in the zodiac. Ox came in second, followed by Tiger in third place and Rabbit in fifth, who crossed by jumping stones but grabbed a log to finish the race.

    Once upon a time, the Jade Emperor thought it'd be better to assign an animal to each year so people could

    more easily remember the Zodiac cycle. So he decided to hold a meeting with all the animals and he would choose 12 of them to be the Zodiac animals. To get to the meeting called by the Jade Emperor, the animals had to cross a river to reach the meeting place. Cat and Rat were the worst swimmers in the animal kingdom. They decided to hop on the back of Ox. Ox, being naive and good-natured, agreed to carry them both across. Midway across the river, rat pushed cat into the water. Then as Ox neared the other side of the river, Rat jumped ahead and reached the shore first. So he claimed first place in the competition and the zodiac. Following closely behind was strong Ox who was named the 2nd animal in the zodiac. After Ox, came Tiger with its powerful strength to cross the river and was named the 3rd animal in the cycle. Suddenly,the Rabbit arrived. It crossed the river by jumping from one stone to another in a nimble. Halfway through, it almost lost the

    race but the Rabbit was lucky enough to grab hold of a floating log that later washed him to shore. Coming in 5th place was the Flying Dragon.
