Investment Outlook
Equity Investment Outlook
Equity Outlook: Whither Green Shoots? A cursory glance at the newspapers is enough to gauge investor mood about equities. Markets seem to be grappling with multitude of factors, weighing down sentiments, viz. governance deficit, stubborn inflation, high current account deficit & falling currency, European financial crisis and the resultant domestic growth slowdown. As is customary, falling markets lend credence to all such concerns. If we look at Indias economic growth post liberalization, there have been four occasions where growth has slowed down significantly (below 5%). This has been accompanied by major international developments affecting world economy; FY92 when India faced balance of payment crisis after oil shock in 1991; FY98 East Asian Crisis; 2001 dot-com bust and 9/11 disaster; 2003 SARS breakout in Asian countries and virtual freezing of borders. Each time the growth has recovered from the lows and has averaged 6.5%. It is reasonable to assume that this is Indias growth potential if not higher. The period also includes the effect of various governments and coalitions at the centre. While debating the effect of government on recent growth, it is pertinent to look at the role played by federal structure of Indias democracy, since state governments wield considerable influence. This is also visible in the widely differential growth rates of State Domestic Products. As we progress as a society, the electorate is also evolving. A rising share of middle class demands better governance as it cannot be influenced with cheap freebies or bought over by special favors. There are early signs of this structural change visible in recent state elections over past few years. Democracies, by nature are selfcorrecting and as current polity recognises this it is highly likely to pull up its socks and surpass the low expectations before the 2014 rendezvous with voters. Global Commodity Indices indicate that commodity fuelled inflation maybe coming off in Rupee terms, which has started to translate into lower trajectory in WPI Inflation and even lower in WPI Manufacturing inflation (RBIs measure of core inflation). Even though, food component still remains stubborn and volatile, the trajectory for headline and core inflation is coming down. This could eventually force the Central Banks hand and lead to lower interest rates. Indias dependence on global capital flows combined with persistent negative current account has led to significant depreciation in the domestic currency. It may look worrisome on the surface, however there seems to be an involuntary stimulus provided by the falling rupee. A lower INR is likely to provide huge incentives to exporters and for import substitution, in turn helping domestic business activity. While the outlook for European financial system remains clouded and the path to resolving the crisis is a long winding one, the political leadership in the region is working to find a solution. The effect of mismanaging the situations are reasonably well understood. Fallouts of Lehman Bros collapse in 2008 provides good indication of the wide ranging impact. In the live-by-theday market place news flow on the subject is likely to result in substantial volatility. However, over time we would assign a low probability to break down of coordination and a financial contagion. Keeping sentiments at bay, todays rock bottom expectations and cheap valuations demand higher allocation to equity assets. Source: Bloomberg

Make Inflation work in your favour: Inflation affects your returns from any investment including mutual funds. But, in case of savings solutions, you can use it to your advantage - through indexation - which can help you reduce the amount on which you have to pay tax. You can benefit from indexation, if investing for more than 1 year. Please consult your tax advisor on how to take advantage of indexation. Aim to preserve your money: These schemes generally invest in instruments like bonds of reputed Indian companies and securities (bonds) issued by the Government of India which are considered relatively safe. Aim to provide Liquidity: If you need to withdraw your money, all you have to do is submit a redemption slip and your money is normally credited to your bank account within one working day. You may also opt for an online redemption facility offered by many fund houses for added convenience. Tax-efficient returns: You can earn returns in the form of monthly / quarterly dividends etc. which are completely tax-free in your hands. A dividend distribution tax of 13.519% is applicable and is deducted by the fund house. There are various savings solutions available depending on the time period that you would like to invest for: a. 1 day to 3 months b. 3 to 6 months c. 6 months to 1 year d. 1 year +
Investors are advised to consult their tax advisor in view of individual nature of tax benefits. The Financial Solution (Savings Solution) stated above is ONLY for highlighting the many advantages perceived from investments in Mutual Funds but does not in any manner, indicate or imply, either the quality of any particular Scheme or guarantee any specific performance/returns.

What are Tax Savings Solutions? Our Tax Savings Solutions help to reduce your tax burden and at the same time, aim to grow your money through equity investments.
Who can benefit from Tax Savings Solutions? Tax saving is important, especially when investors can save up to ` 30,900 in taxes! Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 provides options to save tax by reducing the taxable income by up to ` 1 lakh. But, wealth creation is also important. Isnt it? Thats why this solution is ideal for investors who would like to create wealth along with tax saving.
Tax savings of ` 30,900 is calculated assuming qualifying amount of deduction is ` 1 lakh & investor falls in the top income tax slab of 30% & includes applicable cess. Investors are advised to consult their tax advisor in view of individual nature of tax benefits.
Low lock-in period: Your money is locked-in for just 3 years, as against the much longer lock-in periods in other options. Potential to earn dividends: While your money is locked-in for 3 years, you may opt for the dividend option and can receive returns in the form of tax-free dividends during this time. This feature is unique only to tax saving solutions from mutual funds. Earn market linked returns: Since investments are made in stocks of Indian companies, the value of your investment moves with the stock market. Although it comes with market related risks, your money is diversified i.e. spread out across stocks of multiple companies and is being monitored by an investment expert with an aim to minimize such risks. Tax-free returns: When you withdraw your investment after 3 years, the returns are totally tax free. Yes, you save taxes on both, your initial investment and also on the returns.
Tax deduction(s) available u/s 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 is subject to conditions specified therein. Investors are requested to note that fiscal laws may change from time to time and there can be no guarantee that the current tax position may continue in the future.
