Loch = lake (Loch Lomond) however not all lochs are enclosed.

Loch Marie is a fjord and is open to the sea. So a lake can always be a loch, but a loch is not always a lake! Loch Ness is Scotland's (if not the world's) most famous lake (or 'loch' in Scotland). It runs for 23 miles (37 km) along the natural geological cleft that stretches from Fort William in the west of the Scottish Highlands, to Inverness in the north. About a mile wide at most places it is the purported home of the Loch Ness monster, a possibly mythical creature, which dwells in the Loch and is occasionally spotted by locals and passersby. The sightings claimed lend credence to the remote possibility of a group of survivors of the long-extinct plesiosaurs (which lived up to around 65 million years ago).

Loch Ness...... some facts

Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands and is one of the most visited locations in Scotland. In fact it is the most famous lake in the world, loch being the Scottish word for lake or fiord. Loch Ness is a substantial body of water about 24 miles long by one mile wide and at its deepest point it goes down nearly 1,000 ft. There are about 40 small rivers, streams, burns and waterways running into the loch. Loch Ness lies at the northeast end of the Great Glen in the Highlands of Scotland and occupies a large part of the Great Glen fault. The Great Glen is a geological fault running across the entire width of the Highlands of Scotland. It runs southwest from Inverness right down to Fort William and contains three freshwater lochs - Loch Ness, Loch Oich and Loch Lochy. Take an uphill walk from the cottage passing Easter Boleskine near Boleskine House for a fine view looking down on Loch Ness. Every year in September in the village of Drumnadrochit, there is the Loch Ness Beer Festival, hosted at Hotel Benleva from the village. It takes a week, ending in the last Saturday of September.

he Loch Ness Monster (Scottish Gaelic: Niseag) is a cryptid that is reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal has varied since it was brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings. II. History While there have been many Loch Ness Monster sightings, the scientific community has yet to determine what species it belongs to. Despite many photographs and sworn sightings of the creature, no physical proof has ever been found to support its existence no bones, no tissue, nothing. Again, I think we may want to watch the tone. I dont want to upset this monster by saying it doesnt exist. I cant believe this, youre actually scared of it. Give me one hour and a color printer and Ill give you photographic evidence of at least five previously unknown

monsters.
