CALL FOR EDITOR

Applicants Sought for Founding Editor of the New Scholarly Journal, Native American and Indigenous Studies Deadline: August 30, 2012 or until Editor is named The Council of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association seeks applicants for the position of editor or co-editors of Native American and Indigenous Studies. The official term is for a minimum of four years, with possible annual reappointment thereafter, to a maximum service of seven years. Scope of NAIS: NAIS will be published two times a year by the University of Minnesota Press. A blind/peer-reviewed scholarly journal, NAIS is a major initiative of the association, and the NAISA Council intends for it to become a primary vehicle for publication of high-quality scholarship in Native and Indigenous studies. Qualification and requirements of candidates: Key qualities sought for the position of editor or coeditors: an established record of scholarship in Native and Indigenous studies, including strong awareness of the worldwide scope of Indigenous studies; managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle and meet deadlines; the ability to attract respected experts to his or her editorial advisory board; a rank of tenured associate professor or higher; ability to provide evidence of institutional support and commitment for the duration of appointment. Candidates must be members in good standing of NAISA, and maintain their membership for the duration of the appointment. Major responsibilities of the editor of NAIS include:

working closely with Council to develop the journals editorial vision, processes, and practices; identifying qualified candidates for the editorial board and book review editor for consideration of appointment by Council; providing a clear vision for the direction of the Journal within the larger mandate of the Association; drawing on the expertise and advisory capacity of the appointed editorial board for the benefit of the Journal; working closely with the Press to establish and manage the peer review process; soliciting high-quality manuscripts from potential authors, and (with the help of Press staff) assisting these authors in seeing their manuscripts to publication; deciding which manuscripts to publish; selecting a sufficient pool of competent reviewers to reach conclusions and make decisions on manuscripts in a timely fashion; delivering to Council in advance of the spring conference a written report on the Journals yearly activities, which will also be made available to the NAISA membership; and attend the annual conference and be present at the general meeting to represent the Journal to the membership.

Applicants should have recognized expertise in the field, possess editorial experience, and be able to lead an active editorial board in working effectively with publishing professionals. Applicants must have clear employer or institutional support for this activity for the duration of the appointment, including release time, general office support, and office space as necessary. Search procedure: Applicants will be reviewed by the NAISA Council immediately after the deadline submission date. The application packet should include:

A Vision Statement: Set forth your goals and plans for the content of the Journal, in both short and long terms. This may include an assessment of the current strengths, weaknesses, or gaps that you plan to address and how you will operationalize your plan. As NAIS is the official scholarly journal of

the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, please also discuss how your vision furthers the goals, commitments, and larger mandates of NAISA and its constituencies.

Editor Background Information: The name, affiliation, and other relevant information about the potential editor. Describe the relevant qualifications that support your consideration. Evidence of the ability and experience of the editor to provide sound judgment and guidance to potential authors. Please include a vita or resume. Vitae are not included in the five-page limit, and no standard form is required. Provide a clear description of the structure of the editorial office and responsibilities, as you envision them at this point, as well as the ways in which you will work with NAISA Council, the Press, the editorial board, etc. Institutional Support: It is important for candidates to consider and address the feasibility of serving as editor in light of the resources likely to be available to the editor candidate. Neither NAISA nor the Press can pay for office space or release time, but can provide basic financial support of $1500 annually for office resources as necessary to Journal editors. This support may be used at the editors discretion for clerical assistance, office supplies, postage, and telephone beyond what will be provided by the editor's home institution. Since the support offered by different institutions varies widely, you are encouraged to contact the Executive Office of your department, program, or institution as necessary in order to ensure the feasibility of your application and to receive official documentation of said support.
