In June DC Comics announced the celebration of their one-year anniversary of The New 52 with September’s The New 52 Zero Month as well as the premiere of the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises in July. The two comic publishers are aggressively competing with one another in various forms including comics, movies, and the digital.

    Marvel Comics had a huge week during the 4th of July with the release of Sony Pictures The Amazing Spider-Man as well as the announcement of their publishing initiative Marvel NOW! In June DC Comics announced the celebration of their one-year anniversary of The New 52 with Septembers The New 52 Zero Month as well as the premiere of the final installment of Christopher Nolans The Dark Knight Rises in July. The two comic publishers are aggressively competing with one another in various forms including comics, movies, and the digital. Marvel ends nine titles as Marvel NOW! begins between October and February. These titles include Jonathan Hickmans Fantastic Four and FF, Ed Brubakers seven-year run on Captain America, Matt Fractions Invincible Iron Man and The Mighty Thor, Journey into Mystery, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy, and the Incredible Hulk. Editor-inChief Axel Alonso promises to keep creators on the titles to prove to readers they are building something to last. The Marvel NOW! publishing initiative is a five month schedule of new #1 titles. Instead of the one month publishing initiative of DC Comics the New 52, Marvel is spreading it over to attract new readers to the comic shops week after week. Currently the Avengers has the largest franchise of titles consisting of 7 team titles (Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers Assemble, Avengers Academy, Secret Avengers, Dark Avengers, Marvel Universe Vs. the Avengers) and 7 solo titles (Captain America, Captain America and Black Widow, The Mighty Thor, Journey into Mystery, Invincible Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye) totaling 14 Avengers-related titles within the franchise. Both Captain America and the Mighty Thor were recently released as new #1s when their respective films launched in 2011. Relaunching them again as new #1s could be counter-productive unlike the massive reboot of the New 52. However Marvel does have a rich history with their relaunch unlike DC Comics who may have thrown out key aspects following their 1985 Crisis of Infinite Earths event. The announcement of Marvel NOW! in July also reveals a major death at the end of the Avengers Vs. X-Men in September.

    After DC Comics Zero Month, the New 52 begin the Halloween month with luck number 13 on all of its first wave titles. The month launches new storylines in Batman, Green Lantern, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and Frankenstein. Action Comics Annual #1 picks up where Grant Morrison left Superman after the wake of the Brainiacs attack on Metropolis. The Kryptonite Man is the first Earth-born villain facing up against the Man of Steel. Following Julys Batman: Earth One, the second volume of Superman: Earth One graphic novel is released exploring how Clark Kent figures out how Superman fits into his world. During the DC New 52 Panel at the Kapow Comic Convention, Co-Publisher Dan DiDio hinted at a darker take on the Man of Steel. The Batman franchise begins with Scott Snyder returning the Joker back into the Bat books following the incident in Detective Comics #1. The Joker is back in Death of the Family story arc which will see the confrontation between Batgirl and the Joker. Writer John Layman of Chew takes over the Detective Comics while Batwoman teams up with Wonder Woman. Green Lantern titles will reveal the Rise of the Third Army event leading into Trinity War the next DC Comics event in 2013. The Guardians of the Universe have failed with the emotionless Manhunters and the fearless Green Lanterns and now it is time for the First Lantern to lead the Third Army. The saga of Rotworld explodes in three different titles including Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and Frankenstein. I, Vampire writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and former Xombi artist Frazer Irving explores the villain Skeletor in Masters of the Universe: The Origin of Skeletor #1 One Shot.

    Caps eight years of stories beginning with Avengers: Disassembled, House of M, and Messiah CompleX. Marvel closes out Avengers vs. X-Men with a 5-issue weekly series called AVX: Consequences, A Plus X, and Marvel NOW! Point One. Following the Post-Avengers vs. X-Men era, Marvel launches Uncanny Avengers which is a combination of both the Avengers and the XMen teams. The appearance of Thanos in the post-credits of the Avengers film has led the cosmic Marvel character to have his own mini-series exploring his origins in Thanos: Son of Titan. Long-time writer of the Avengers Brian Michael Bendis ends his run on both the Avengers and the New Avengers with one final arc. Bendis also brings the conclusion to Avengers Assemble with his Ultimate Spider-man artist Mark Bagley. Other titles coming to an end in October include Jonathan Hickmans Fantastic Four and FF, Ed Brubakers seven-year run on Captain America, Matt Fractions Invincible Iron Man and The Mighty Thor, Journey into Mystery, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy, and the Incredible Hulk. These titles will likely be launched under the Marvel NOW! banner between October and February. Zombie writer Jonathan Maberry presents the third Marvel Vs. title following Marvel Vs. the Punisher and Marvel Vs. the Wolverine with Marvel Vs. the Avengers. The Ultimate Universe finishes their summer event which started with Divided We Fall and concludes with United We Stand. Overall Marvel Comics is positioning itself for the future with new #1s however the surplus of these #1s over the past few years from the same publisher seems more like a gimmick to draw readers in than a committed effort for change. Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso compared NuMarvel a publishing initative 11 years ago where great writers, artists, character, and hook came together to the same as Marvel NOW! however now they are slapping a new #1 on the cover.
