Education is important for empowering people and developing societies. However, simply teaching skills for making a living is not enough - schools must also teach students how to lead purposeful lives. This study will trace graduates of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Education to determine their employment status and gauge the effectiveness of the academic program in preparing them for their careers. The results can provide insights on how to strengthen the College's ability to develop exceptional educational leaders.

Introduction

Education would be so much more effective if its purpose were to ensure that by the time they leave school, every boy and girl should know how much they dont know, and be imbued with a lifelong desire to know it. Sir William Haley

Every man dreams, many aspire to become rich, to become famous or even be a business tycoon themselves. Choosing a career is one of the crucial things that a student has to decide. So school experience must have a big impact in a childs life. Education is the most important mechanism for the empowerment of people for their socioeconomic, political, and technological development. As students graduate from college, most of them believe that it is the diploma which is the only key to employment. The January 2010 estimated figures from the National Statistics Office (2010) showed the Philippines employment rate at 92.7%, unemployment rate at 7.3%, and underemployment rate at 19.7 %. With the new batch of graduates this year, these figures will surely change either for the better or for the worse. The figures are dependent on the kind of opportunities the new graduates have in relation to their fields. Boaduo (2009) explained that education is the most important mechanism for the empowerment of people for their socioeconomic, political and technological development. It is for this reason that graduates should have the necessary knowledge and skills afforded to them by their respective educational institutions to make them competitive and eventually excel in their fields.

Background of the Study An educational system isnt worth a great deal if it teaches young people how to make a living but doesnt teach them how to make a life.

The College of Education endeavors to promote a values-laden educational philosophy, a philosophy that is based on valuing not only the self and others but also the environment.

The tracer study on the graduates of BBTE seeks to determine the status of graduates within four to six months following their graduation, and is deemed pertinent as a way of gauging graduates capability of securing employment. It is also a means of appraising graduates satisfaction level, encompassing various experiences throughout their studies in BBTE. Findings from the study can be used as input to enhance the effectiveness of BBTEs academic program and administrative system.

The researchers are conducting this study to trace the BBTE graduates to know the demographic profile of the employment of the respondents.
