ACKNOWLEDGMENT
To harness our management skills, we got an opportunity to understand strategies and competitive probabilities on product packaging. We are thankful to Mr. Ashok Gupta, Director of ICG for his motivation and support. I will remain highly obliged to Dr. Mahima Rai, our internal guide for this project, for imparting her valuable suggestions to us when I needed the most. Her guidance and suggestions were invaluable for the completion of this project. My Acknowledgement will remain incomplete if we do not mention the name of the institute that has given me tInternational College for Girls. It is because of this institute that we have done a project on product packaging. At last we owe a lot to all those who contributed to it in overt or covert manner. Bits make the whole. We acknowledge their support.
INTRODUCTION

A packaging specification is an accurate and detailed description, containing information about all the necessary facts, properties and special features of a packaging material, ready-made package or accessory, to facilitate unambiguous communications between the manufacturer (supplier) and the user (buyer). On the basis of the information contained in the packaging specification, the supplier will be able to quote, manufacture and deliver the package exactly according to the requirements of the buyer. Packaging specifications should be detailed enough to make this possible, but, at the same time, flexible enough to permit changes and eventual improvements. In order to avoid the inclusion of unnecessary or unrealistic data (over specification) in the packaging specification, it is always advisable to discuss the formulation with the supplier(s) in advance. This is particularly important with respect to raw material qualities (availability to the supplier), eventual limitation in the production equipment, practical possibilities of complying with established tolerances, etc.

PACKAGING
Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use. Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, andsells. In many countries it is fully integrated into government, business, institutional, industrial, and personal use. The primary role of packaging is to contain, protect and preserve a product as well as aid in its handling and final presentation. Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages. The packaging can be done within the export company or the job can be assigned to an outside packaging company. Packaging provides following benefits to the goods to be exported: * Physical Protection Packaging provides protection against shock, vibration, temperature, moisture and dust. * Marketing: Proper and attractive packaging play an important role in encouraging a potential buyer. Convenience - Packages can have features which add convenience in distribution, handling, display, sale, opening, use, and reuse. * Security - Packaging can play an important role in reducing the security risks of shipment. It also provides authentication seals to indicate that the package and contents are not counterfeit. Packages also can include anti-theft devices, such as
6
dye-packs, RFID tags, or electronic article surveillance tags, that can be activated or detected by devices at exit points and require specialized tools to deactivate. Using packaging in this way is a means of loss prevention.
Packaging history
In early days there is less need for packaging, either for transportation or storage. Before the creation of pure packaging materials people use many of the natural things to make a basket for packaging to protect products from contamination, from environmental damage, from theft or from any other damage. They used woven grasses, animal organs or this type of things for that. But these days we are using paper products, glass products, metal products and Plastic products for packaging.

Packaging Material
The packaging material depends on what type of product you are going to send to your customer. It is very important that package you are sending should be safe in your packing material. Surely you would never want that your gift of glass or your good looking showpiece arrive to your receiver in bits and pieces. Small items can be packed in envelop but for bigger item you need large in size and more safe packing material. So that it would not get in to parts or get wrecked. This is one side of your packing material on other hand your packing material should have attractive design. Attractive printing is very important because it gives first look to everyone. And as you know many persons are involve in shipping and handling of your pack.
Metal: Appropriate for packaging foods (canned foods). For drinks, such as soft drinks beers, aluminium is often used. Tin plate is solid, heavy steel covered with tin to protect it against rust. It is used to package canned foods. It can be separated by magnets should be recycled in all cases. Aluminium is attractive, light strong at the same time, but requires a lot of raw materials energy to make it. For this reason
9
it must be recycled. The majority of cans of soft drinks, lids, aluminium foil, etc. are made aluminium.
Brick carton: A light, strong air-tight packaging material. Ideal for transporting storage. Its complex composition makes it difficult to recycle. It is becoming the main packaging material used for basic foodstuffs. Complex packaging material, made up of several layers of plastic, paper aluminium. It is also difficult to recycle. It is used mainly to keep drinks such as milk, juice etc.
Cardboard: Appropriate for packaging materials wrapping, preferable to "white cork". Its use may prove to be unnecessary when used for products which are already packaged sufficiently. In all cases, this packaging material is easy to recycle reuse. It is used in the form of boxes, sheets corrugated cardboard.
Glass: An ideal material for foods, especially liquids. It is inalterable, strong easy to recycle. It is the traditional vessel in the home (jars, glasses, jugs, etc.). Its weight shape may involve some difficulties for transport storage.

Physical protection - The objects enclosed in the package may require protection from, among other things, mechanical shock, vibration, electrostatic discharge, compression, temperature, etc. Barrier protection - A barrier from oxygen, water vapour, dust, etc., is often required. Permeation is a critical factor in design. Some packages contain desiccants or Oxygen absorbers to help extend shelf life. Modified atmospheres or controlled atmospheres are also maintained in some food packages. Keeping the contents clean, fresh, sterile and safe for the intended shelf life is a primary function. Containment or agglomeration - Small objects are typically grouped together in one package for reasons of efficiency. For example, a single box of 1000 pencils
21
requires less physical handling than 1000 single pencils. Liquids, powders, and granular materials need containment. Information transmission - Packages and labels communicate how to use, transport, recycle, or dispose of the package or product. With pharmaceuticals, food, medical, and chemical products, some types of information are required by governments. Some packages and labels also are used for trackandtrace purposes. Marketing - The packaging and labels can be used by marketers to encourage potential buyers to purchase the product. Package graphicdesign and physical design have been important and constantly evolving phenomenon for several decades. Marketingcommunications and graphicdesign are applied to the surface of the package and (in many cases) the pointofsaledisplay. Security - Packaging can play an important role in reducing the security risks of shipment. Packages can be made with improved tamperresistance to deter tampering and also can have tampered evident features to help indicate tampering. Packages can be engineered to help reduce the risks of packagepilferage: Some package constructions are more resistant to pilferage and some have pilfered indicating seals. Packages may include authentication seals and use securityprinting to help indicate that the package and contents are not counterfeit. Convenience - Packages can have features that add convenience in distribution, handling, stacking, display, sale, opening, reclosing, use, dispensing, and reuse. Portion control - Single serving or single dosage packaging has a precise amount of contents to control usage. Bulk commodities (such as salt) can be divided into packages that are a more suitable size for individual households. It is also aids the control of inventory: selling sealed one-liter-bottles of milk, rather than having people bring their own bottles to fill themselves.
Labelling
The main purpose of labelling is to inform the consumer/user about the quality and quantity of the product. The exporter should as certain the labelling requirements from the foreign buyers and strictly complies with them. Most packages, whether final customer packaging or distribution packaging, are imprinted with information intended to assist the customer. For consumer products, labeling decisions are extremely important for the following reasons.
Labels serve to capture the attention of shoppers. The use of catchy words may cause strolling customers to stop and evaluate the product. The label is likely to be the first thing a new customer sees and thus offers their first impression of the product. The label provides customers with product information to aid their purchase decision or help improve the customers experience when using the product (e.g., recipes).
22
Labels generally include a universal product codes (UPC) and, in some cases, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, that make it easy for resellers, such as retailers, to checkout customers and manage inventory. For companies serving international markets or diverse cultures within a single country, bilingual or multilingual labels may be needed. In some countries many products, including food and pharmaceuticals, are required by law to contain certain labels such as listing ingredients, providing nutritional information or including usage warning information.
EXPORT PACKAGING
Consultants to companies who engage in exporting note that the merchandise they ship will generally be subject to more handling and potentially damaging forces during transport than will goods headed for domestic destinations. Intelligent packaging, then, is a key component of the exporting process. Ideally, exporters should use a packaging approach that minimizes the cost of transportation while simultaneously ensuring that the goods reach their destination intact. Many small exporting companies that do not have the financial or operating resources to take care of packaging themselves utilize firms that specialize in providing such services. Exporting firms need to keep abreast of labelling and marking requirements on goods intended for international destinations as well. Pharmaceutical products, for instance, require special labelling that varies from country to country. In addition, many countries enforce regulations requiring that imported goods bear the name of the country of origin on the outside of their packaging. Packaging containing merchandise intended for foreign ports also typically includes markings indicating the height and weight of the packages, as well as any additional handling instructions. Today packaging is considering as one of the most important element for marketing any product. Nobody can underscore the need for good packaging when he decided to export his product. Packaging means packing of the product in some container to reach the ultimate consumer. Packing mans protective covering used for transportation and shipment of goods. Packaging fulfils a vital role in helping to get the export product to the market in the best condition, as well as in presenting goods to overseas buyer in an attractive way. Packaging of a product performs the role of silent salesmen as it
23
* Improves presentation of the product * protect the product during distribution * Makes handling and retail display of the product easier. Good packing is one; whish protects its contents against hazard like dampness, rough handling, stacking, improper storage, insect infestation, pillage, tampering and pilferage. The choice of a suitable packaging is primarily determined by the significant characteristics of the product like physical and chemical properties and also by density, weight, and distance to be shipped.
Packaging Cases
We manufacture a wide range of Packaging Cases that are exclusively used for packaging diverse items in different industries. These are known for their specific design, durability and safety which makes it easy to carry the goods from one place to another. Further, these are offered with the specifications of our clients to suit their needs. Carton Boxes(All Sizes)
24
A carton box is made of different types of paper such as Kraft liner, corrugated medium; sack Kraft, and duplex board (carton). In the near future, according to sources with the paper industry, carton boxes are expected to be a more popular packaging material than plastic. Because carton boxes are cheap and provide a practical packaging material for various industrial goods. Moreover, carton boxes are easy to recycle into a basic material for paper.
Plastic bags of gardening supplies fresh produce, snack foods, hardware, gardening products, etc. They are often made from a single roll of film on a horizontal or vertical form fill sealing machine. Several design options and features are available. Some bags have gussets to allow a higher volume of contents. Some have the ability to stand up on a shelf or a refrigerator. Some have easy-opening or enclosable options. Handles are cut into or added onto some. Bag-In-Box packaging is often used for liquids such as wine and institutional sizes of other liquids. Plastic bags usually use less material than comparable boxes, cartons, or jars, thus are often considered as "reduced or minimized packaging". Plastic shopping bags Open bags with carrying handles are used in large numbers worldwide. Stores often provide them as a convenience to shoppers. Some stores charge a nominal fee for a bag.
25
Heavy-duty reusable shopping bags are often considered environmentally better than single-use paper or plasticshoppingbags.
Danger to children
Thin plastic bags, especially dry cleaning bags, have the potential for causing suffocation. About 25 children in the United States suffocate each year due to plastic bags, most under the age of one. This has led to voluntary warning labels on some bags which may pose a hazard to small children.

Gilman offer three (3) alternative packing styles for containerised shipments. 1. Strap-pack: Bales are unitised into packs of 12 or 16 regular bales with packs held together by 3 polyester straps. The packs are loaded into the shipping container 2 packs high, with a 12 bale pack as the base and a 16 bale pack loaded on top. 2. Stretch-Wrapped: Bales are unitised into packs of 12 or 16 regular bales with packs held together by P.P. film. The packs are loaded into the shipping container 2 packs high, with a 12 bale pack as the base and a 16 bale pack loaded on top. 3. Pull-pack: A pull-strap (made from webbed belting and a buckle) is placed around the bottom 2 strap or wrap packs. Using the loops on either side of the container, 4 packs can be pulled out of the container at once.
Mode of transportation: - Generally, air freight requires less packing than ocean and land freight, and containerized shipments require less packing than noncontainerized shipments due to lower risks of loss or damage.
Ports of destination: - In areas with higher incidence of loss or damage due to mishandling, theft and pilferage, the more and stronger packing is necessary. Climatic conditions: - Desiccants (drying agent) and/or special packing materials, such as waxed paper and laminated foil, may be required in areas with high moisture levels and for goods that are prone to sweating. Customs duties and freight rates:- Lighter and less packing material is preferred in cases where the specific duty or the freight rate is by weight basis. Cost of packing materials:- The exporter, being a manufacturer, may select the most economical materials and method of packing that can adequately protect
27
Buyer's requirements:- Buyers may specify the type of packing required, particularly in the OEM arrangements. If the buyer's demand for packing is 'too much' which adds to the export cost, the manufacturer may recommend suitable packing.
Differences Between Exporting and Domestic Business:The basic intent of a quotation for international trade is the same as it is for quotes made in the U.S.; but the rules and procedures are different. The following are examples of the difference between international and domestic quotations.
Trade terms: Domestic sales use trade terms such as FOB Factory as defined under the Uniform Commercial Code of the United States. One of the benefits of this trade term is that title of the goods passes to the buyer at our dock. When businesses engage in international trade, they cannot rely on the Uniform Commercial Code or domestic trade terms and should use the trade terms recognized by international traders. Methods of payment: Where open account or cash in advance are the primary ways businesses have of collecting domestic accounts receivable, they may not be as common in international trade. Equally as common in international trade are letters of credit and drafts. The document preparation and procedures on these consignment controlled shipments requires careful analysis and handling. Methods of packaging: Shipping goods internationally exposes the in-transit product to risks it would not otherwise encounter. Among the greatest risks for damage to goods in foreign trade are: theft; environmental risks such as heat, cold and moisture; transportation by ocean freight or rail; and lack of mechanized physical handling equipment in some of the lesser developed countries. There may be certain documentation required in international trade that would reflect the proper packaging, packing, handling and stowing of goods in order to satisfy the importers requirements as well as their governments. Methods of shipment: Businesses normally ship goods by mail, truck or airfreight to their customers in the United States. In international trade, truck shipments are
28
limited to Canada and Mexico and most processed food products are shipped by air or ocean freight. Air freight differs only in the bill of lading used. Meanwhile, ocean freight can include drayage to move ocean containers to your facility, railroads to get the cargo to the port of export and another drayage trucking to transport your products to the ocean carrier at the pier. Because these modes of transportation differ a great deal, particularly in the area of carriers liability, they need to be understood thoroughly before making a quotation. There are specific documents for international shipments that vary in detail, handling and distribution from the domestic equivalent.
Insurance covering damage or loss: The seller has primary responsibility for loss or damage to the goods, in most cases, all the way to the port of unloading in the foreign country. Insurance coverage is therefore a must for all international transactions. Insurance certificates are required for proof of coverage on many exports, especially those that are being paid under a letter of credit. Validity period: The validity period of an international quotation is usually 90 days. This allows the buyer to arrange for payment and any import permits that may be necessary to make the purchase decision of your product. Any changes to the quotation during that time must also be reflected in the documentation. Import laws in the foreign country: Before making a quotation to a buyer in a foreign country, it will be necessary to determine what restrictions exist. Common considerations are availability of exchange, country of origin of the product you are offering, import permits, certificates and inspections. The importer may also have documentary requirements in the destination market that must be matched with the exporters prior to customs clearance. Banking fees: Unless the importer used U.S. dollars as their currency, international sales generally begin with payment by the buyer in their own currency. The buyers bank will then make arrangements to pay the exporter through a U.S. bank in U.S. dollars. The banks charge a fee for this process, part of which will be for the sellers account. These fees vary depending on the method of payment being used.

Parle Agro, a Rs.600 crores food and beverage company, has introduced a fresh new packaging for Frooti Indias largest selling mango drink. The new packaging includes an updated color palette and improved graphics. Frooti has been one of my favourite drinks since school days. During that time, it used to come in this dark green and yellow, almost squarish type of package that made it stand out from all the other beverages on the shelf. It was small, highly desirable and tasted delicious. Its been a long journey for Frooti since, and the brand seems to be keeping up with the times. The mango at the centre of the new package sports a headset, presumably as a sign of todays iPod generation who are extremely mobile and connected. I dont know why, but there seems to be a clever uncanny resemblance with the Apple brand notice the mango curve on the right along with the positioning of the leaf. I cant help but draw parallels with Apple iTunes for some strange reason.
32
Frooti is available in 65ml and 200ml TetraPaks. Also available in PET bottles of 250ml, 500ml, 1000ml and 1500ml.Somehow the lighter yellow shade of the new packaging gives the impression of a citrus drink (lemonade) instead of mango. On the positive side, the Frooti typeface seems to have had a minor refinement giving it a more three dimensional feel with its subtle drop shadow. In terms of taste, its been more or less the same for the past couple of years. I remember relishing the true taste of mango in Frooti more than a decade ago. Unfortunately, at times I get an artificial taste if not chilled properly. The price of the new Frooti has also increased by 20%. The new drink now retails at Rs.12. Its a clear sign to compete with the other mango drinks from Real and Tropicana which retail at about Rs.15. It would be interesting to see how Parle Agro can capitalize and gain marketshare with the new packaging of its most valuable beverage brand.
Packaging of frooti:To ensure convenience, Frooti is offered in size variants: 1 litre (35 imp fl oz; 34 US fl oz), 250 ml (9 imp fl oz; 8 US fl oz) and 200 ml (7 imp fl oz; 7 US fl oz) TetraPaks. A consumer study revealed that the consumers needed a recap bottle that didnt exist in the mango drink segment. Parle Agro considered the consumer requirement strongly and launched Frooti in a new hygienic hotfill PET bottle, making it the first mango drink to be offered in the PET bottles.
