BIG TEN FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 10

BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

Bowled Over: With its victory over na onally ranked Michigan on Saturday, Nebraska notched its sixth victory of the season to become bowl eligible. Nebraska has advanced to 48 bowl contests in program history, including each of the last ve seasons. The Cornhuskers are one of three Big Ten programs to boast 20 or more bowl victories, joining Michigan and Penn State. Nebraska is the third conference program to earn bowl eligibility this season, along with Northwestern and Wisconsin. In addi on, Michigan, Michigan State and Minnesota need just one more victory to become bowl eligible. Rushers Pass the Century Mark: Last Saturdays eorts saw four conference rushers surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the season, including one quarterback. The quartet is among a group of just 10 rushers na onally to have eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark this year. Ohio States Braxton Miller recorded the fourth 1,000-yard rushing mark by a Big Ten quarterback in conference history, now with 1,093 yards to lead all conference rushers. Northwesterns Venric Mark is the conferences second-leading rusher with 1,077 yards, becoming the rst Wildcat running back to reach the 1,000-yard plateau since Tyrell Su on in 2006. Last Saturdays Michigan State-Wisconsin contest saw each teams star ng running back surpass the 1,000-yard mark as the Spartans LeVeon Bell now has 1,061 yards, while the Badgers Montee Ball boasts 1,028 yards this season. Going For 10: With a road victory against conference-unbeaten Penn State last Saturday, Ohio State kept its unblemished record intact by improving to 9-0. The Buckeyes are the only team in the country boas ng nine victories this season, and one of six teams in the country with an undefeated record this year. Head coach Urban Meyer became the third coach in program history to win nine straight contests to begin his tenure. It marks just the h me since 1905 a Big Ten coach has won nine more games to begin their coaching tenures. Ohio States Carol Widdoes won 12 straight from 1944-45, and Buckeye mentor Earle Bruce opened with an 11-0 mark in 1979, equaling the start of Michigans Bennie Oosterbaan from 1948-49. Former Wisconsin coach William Juneau began his career with nine victories from 1912-13. More Than a Win at Stake: Among this weeks slate of matchups is a pair of trophy games between annual rivals. It will be the 99th mee ng in the series featuring division foes Michigan and Minnesota, as well as Illinois and Ohio State. Since 1909, the Michigan-Minnesota winner has claimed the Li le Brown Jug, with the Wolverines holding a 67-22-3 advantage with the trophy at stake. Also on Saturday, Illinois and Ohio State will ba le for the Illibuck, a trophy series that began in 1925, with the Buckeyes holding the series advantage. During the 2012 season, the conference boasts an average of 70,501 fans per game, which would rank among the top 10 in conference history in average fans per game among all contests. The Epitome of Student-Athlete: The Na onal Football Founda on (NFF) & College Hall of Fame named Nebraskas Rex Burkhead and Northwesterns Patrick Ward two of 15 recipients of the NFF Na onal Scholar-Athlete Awards. Burkhead and Ward were selected from a na onwide pool of 147 seminalists from among all NCAA divisions and the NAIA. The two Big Ten student-athletes are now nalists for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the na on. Big Ten Football Awards

The Big Ten will continue to honor its past while recognizing its current standouts at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign. The Big Tens enhanced football awards program presents 18 individual trophies in addition to the Big Ten Championship trophy, bearing the names of one or two former standouts. The distinguished names on these football awards honor just a small sampling of the countless student-athletes and coaches who have contributed to the conferences rich and storied history. Seventeen of the honors will be awarded immediately following the regular season, including awards for the best quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, defensive back, kicker and punter. Each of these individual position awards features the names of two former student-athletes. The Big Ten will also continue to honor the conferences top coaches, offensive and defensive players and linemen and freshmen with end-of-year trophies. Big Ten coaches have the opportunity to claim two awards. Media voters will continue to select the Dave McClain Coach of the Year, which has been awarded since 1972, while coaches vote for the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year award. The top offensive player will receive the Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year award, the best defensive player will be awarded the NagurskiWoodson Defensive Player of the Year award and the best first-year standout will receive the ThompsonRandle El Freshman of the Year award. The winner of the Big Ten Football Championship Game will receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy, while the most outstanding player in the game will be awarded the Grange-Griffin Championship Game MVP award. The conference also created two postcollegiate awards - the Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award and the Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award. The full list of awards, along with a breakdown of the former standouts appearing in each awards name, appears to the right.
