Aunty Doshi's Party - Taman Tasik Titiwangsa

- taken from the report of Frances Po
Thank you for all your support which enabled us to carry out yet another successful Community Service project last Sunday, 28 October 2012, at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa. It was wonderful to see so many children playing without a care in the world as they competed fiercely within their teams. The 170 kids in 4 teams and were segregated by age and gender. The games were chosen to be suitable for each age group. We had blowing up and bursting balloons, batting water filled plastic bags, 3-legged races, hoop the mini hula-hoop, tug of war etc. The games went on for more than 2 hours! And to quote Sanjay - its not about competing, winning is everything. I take my hats off to the patient and energetic volunteers from Sai Ananda who painstakingly explained and demonstrated each game and guided the younger ones to complete an obstacle race. The games masters Brother Ayavoo and Sister Vimala went about like they organise such games everyday of their lives ...... And they have perfected the art of getting hyperactive kids and teenagers to say their prayers, form one line queues for meals and almost everything else right on cue. The 2 dozen volunteers also appear to be very clear on their respective duties without too much prompting. There was a lot of meal breaks that day. We started with breakfast, then snack break and then lunch, all within 5 hours. However to the kids, eating was the least of their priorities. The event closed around 2.30pm, after the prizes we awarded and goodie bags handed out.. We must acknowledge the key person behind all this - the much-loved Aunty Doshi (Sanjays mum) smiling and enjoying herself as she takes in the noisy and joyful scene that morning. The occasion became a reality because Aunty Doshi

GUEST SPEAKER - 20 October 2012 Cecilia finally gets to show us the path through the Holy Land
It has been a long time coming, delayed by this and deferred because of that, but finally Cecilia's day arrived on Saturday 20 October. A trip through the Holy Land. Even on the day we all wondered at one point whether it would finally happen as the projector decided it would refuse to perform and the microphones started to stutter. Nevertheless, Cecilia braved it through with determination and it was all well worth the wait. You may think Palestine is a complicated area in the 21st century but as our journey progressed through to the past it seemed no less complicated then. In the blink of the eye and a press of the button we were travelled across the Holy Land via Jordan, the occupied territories of Palestine, Israel and on to Egypt. Ancient civilisations and ancient religions. It is amazing how much history is locked into such a small geographical area. Three of the most significant world religions came from here and the archeology is besides, under and on top of each other. Thank you Cecilia for showing us what was clearly an exceptional trip.

This Week's Speaker

SPCA Selangor - SIX Pillars
Helen Chan is currently the MARCOMM Manager for SPCA Selangor, a position she took on in Dec 2010. She works on a part-time basis with SPC. She has previously working in various companies but had decided to go into early retirement in order to have time to do what she had always wanted to do. She began as a volunteer with SPCA in Sept 2010, cleaning and washing the animals feeding bowls! As a part-time staffer, she now helps with fund raising for the shelters needs, attending events and also with Humane Education for SPCA. When time permits, Helen also helps out teaching English to Myanmar children as well as going for outreaches in Cambodia. RC Seremban presents their first Awardees

by Yoke Leong
It was an unsung but significant occasion for REF/ RCBKS on 18 Oct 2012 when our REF Chairman PP Graham Bennett together with PP Dr Kong, PP Karen Chong and PP I attended the meeting of the Rotary Club of Seremban. We were invited by IPP Keshminder Singh to witness the occasion of the presentation of their first two REF Awardees, both bright looking Form 3 students. This occasion also coincided with District Governor Mansoor Saats official visit to their club. Watching the Awardees being presented with their certificates by the Rotary club of Seremban, we cannot but beam with some satisfaction. We made plans to go only in the last minute, and in the rush, we really only thought of giving our full support to RC Seremban, the first club to join us in building an REF. At the meeting, we made sure we kept our prides in check and worked hard at behaving humbly, knowing full well that this must be preserved as RC Serembans night and that we must play only a supporting role. No visible high-fives between the four of us were to be allowed. But on the way back in Grahams car, on the Seremban-KL Highway, the full significance of the event caught up with us. Thats despite the speed at which Graham was driving, AES cameras flashing away. Suddenly, with the opposing headlights beaming into his eyes, Karen staring at the rain through the side window, Kong sitting in determined meditation and me, in the back seat trying in vain to recover from the few glasses I had; Wow! We really did build something tangible that can fly! Graham remarked, with a tear in his eye from the glaring headlights of course. Yes, and beyond the bounds of our club too. The subsequent great conversation and the accompanying heartfelt feeling of joy after the successful completion of a meaningful project is something beyond compare. It is what we sometimes get to enjoy in Rotary, real happiness. With our sights focused on the many needy students requiring direction, we resolved that we must continue to give our fullest to this fledgling RCS REF that has now finally sprouted, and will soon be followed by a few more clubs. As we approached KL, we pondered about the further effort still required of us from the other clubs, for now appearing to be work, not quite metamorphosed into something pleasant and fulfilling yet, unlike the Seremban REF.

Workshop on Engaging Skills with Neuro-Semantic NLP 26 -27 Oct 2012

With a little cajoling and light persuasion, about 22 Rotarians and volunteer REF mentors turned up for the Neuro-Semantic NLP workshop sponsored and conducted by Anthony Pinto of The Living Dynamics Circle Sdn Bhd. Anthony is a Certified Neurosemantic NLP Trainer (ISNS), Certified Meta Coach (ISNS) and a Regional Director of the MCF Malaysia Chapter. After the few usual stragglers finally arrived (could not find the place), it was time to begin. Loud music blasted, like a Christian revival meeting to get everyone in the mood. Anthony taught us that the most important thing in an engagement is to ask the right questions. So we should always begin with the three questions: What do you want?, Whats holding you back from getting it? and How can I help you get it? These seem very obvious, yet too often we forget to ask them. Beyond these, Anthony explained how the brain works, perceiving messages, processing them (with its filters and biases), deciding (or making the choice) and finally taking action. He also explained the various representational systems we use in communication, whether we are verbal, auditory, kinestatic or digital in nature and that we should tailor our approach by recognising what the other partys representational system is somewhat like a situational technique, no one system fits all. A number of tools were also introduced to help us deal with the various situations. The course content and the way it was presented were excellent, the ambience and surroundings of the training room and office, and the great refreshments all made for an outstanding 2 days of learning experience with enjoyable fellowship. Anthony, seems to have perfected the total experience for us attendees. ~ Report by Yoke Leong
