Cable Tool Rigs
Cable Tool Rigs
Cable Tool Rigs
Cable tool rigs are simpler and cheaper than similarly sized rotary rigs, although loud and very slow to operate. These rigs use heavy bit hanging from a wire rope to drill and the drilling action from bit is impacting formation. A cable is connected to walking beam which moves the bit up and down. The world record cable tool well was drilled in New York to a depth of almost 12,000 feet (3,700 m). Since cable tool drilling does not use air to eject the drilling chips like a rotary, instead using a cable strung bailer; technically there is no limitation on depth. A distinct disadvantage of the cable-tool method is that when high-pressure oil and gas formations are encountered, there is no fluid in the hole to control them. The result is frequent blowouts.
Rotary rigs
In rotary drilling, a bit used to cut the formation is attached to steel pipe called drill pipe. The bit is lowered to the bottom of the hole. The pipe is rotated form the surface by means of a rotary table, through which is inserted a square or hexagonal piece called a Kelly. The Kelly, connected to the drill pipe at the surface, passes through the rotary table. The turning action of the rotary table is applied to the Kelly, which is turn rotate, the drill pipe and the drilling bit. Rotation of the drill string turns the bit. Drilling mud is circulated to lift the cuttings out of hole. A top drive can be used to turn the drill string rather than using the rotary table.
