Tourism Fiji Targets Asian Travellers

Having been allocated US$23.5 million from the government, Tourism Fiji is currently undergoing a major rebranding campaign, with the Chinese market being among its primary targets. The NTOs rebranding exercise comes on the heels of national carrier Air Pacifics decision to revert to its 1951 name of Fiji Airways from 2013. Its revitalising efforts include the addition

of three new aircraft and a revamped fleet, as well as fresh furnishings and enhanced in-flight offerings. Earlier this year, Air Pacific set up a new office in Hong Kong while a Shanghai marketing and PR office was recently established to support the existing Hong Kong office. According to Dave Pflieger, managing director and CEO of Air Pacific and

chairman of Tourism Fiji, the Hong Kong and Shanghai offices will be used to boost outbound traffic from China currently Fijis fifth biggest source market as well as the wider middleclass Asian market through offering destination and product information. Samu Savou, the Beijing-based trade commissioner of The Pacific Islands Forum, said Fijis natural assets would

appeal to Chinese travellers. They wont come here for shopping or for luxurious living and cuisine. Chinese will come to the islands because of our pristine environment and our unique cultures. Besides targeting frequent Chinese travellers, Tourism Fiji also seeks to establish the archipelago as an alternative to popular Asian islands such as Bali and Phuket by offering improved flight facilities, more competitive travel packages and a broader range of accommodation options, according to Dixon Seeto, president of the Fiji Islands Hotel & Tourism Association. Meanwhile, Jetstar is also luring Asian visitors to the Pacific nation with multi-country holiday packages that include Australia, New Zealand and Fiji from its Asian bases. The launch of Jetstar Japan earlier this year is also expected to encourage travel to Fiji via New Zealand or Australia, marking a welcome return of Japanese tourists after Air Pacifics service to Tokyo ceased in 2009. While Fiji is better known for its exclusive island resorts, a number of four- and five-star properties are under development on the main island of Viti Levu. Two new casinos have broken ground, one on Denarau and one in Suva, while the historic Grand Pacific Hotel will open next year after a multi-million dollar refurbishment. Naisoso Island, connected to Nadi by a bridge, will soon be home to a Peppers resort as well as a four-star property, alongside restaurants and leisure facilities.

New Arrival Of Pearls

Triple Agreements

For centuries pearls have symbolized purity, beauty, elegance, power and unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem and considered one of the most valuable. To the ancients, pearls were a symbol of the moon and had magical powers. In classical Rome, only persons above a certain rank were allowed to wear pearl jewelry. The Latin word for pearl literally means unique, attesting to the fact that no two pearls are identical. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence. In the Hindu religion, the presentation of an undrilled pearl and its piercing has formed part of the marriage ceremony. In the romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian), margarita means pearl. The word pearl appeared in the English language in the fourteenth century. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, pearls were very fashionable in Europe as personal ornaments. The clothing of both men and women were embroidered with them. In the lead up to the festive season, Blue Lagoon Pearls of (Fiji) Ltd has launched its array collection of pearl jewellery, enhancing Nadis extensive Pearl offering. Boasting several options, shoppers and gift-givers will be spoilt for choice this festive season, with a new selection of charming and inspiring jewellery gifts for loved-ones. LTOA general secretary Feroz Dean said the invitation to the public was in response to the clampdown on illegal transport activities by the Fiji Police Force traffic unit and the Land Transport Authority during Operation Blitz. More than 2700 drivers were booked for various offences during the exercise last month. "The clampdown by the authorities has resulted in a huge vacuum in transport services and that is the reason we are

Mr Dean reminded the travelling public that using a legal taxi ensured they had adequate insurance cover should an accident occur. "Illegal transport providers cannot offer you the same guarantee and passengers will have no claim if an accident happens in an illegal vehicle," he said. Mr Dean urged members of the LTOA to ensure they dressed appropriately while on duty and to conduct their business in a friendly and helpful manner, bearing in mind the public service vehicle drivers code of conduct.

The scope of investment and trade opportunities between Fiji and Korea are vast with more prospects opening up through the Fiji Embassy to Korea in Seoul. Fiji Revenue and Customs chief executive officer, Jitoko Tikolevu, said the Government recognises that investment was the catalyst to the development of the economy. Speaking at the Fiji-Korea Business Forum and Catalog Exhibition he said that, Fiji and Korea have had a close relationship for more than four decades and in that time Fiji greatly benefited from technical and developmental assistance provided by the Government of the Republic of Korea. And, he said the opening of Fijis Embassy in Seoul was symbolic of the Fijian Governments commitment to be vigorously engaged with the international community. As international trade continues to increase and Fijis economy continues to expand, the Fiji Government is committed to ensuring that

transparency, stability and integrity form the foundations of our economic development, Mr Tikolevu said. This in turn instills confidence in those looking to conduct business in Fiji and as such Fiji has many exciting investment and partnership opportunities for Koreans, he said. And the incentives to motivate this are there as well. There are many more incentives through duty concessions that are available to investors, not to mention tailor-made incentives package to suit your investment needs, he told the potential and current investors. Some of the areas of the economy that Korean businesses have tapped into in Fiji are fisheries, deep sea exploration and many others in the financial sectors. Mr Tikolevu also highlighted that Fijis location is another plus for investors as it is on the crossroad for inbound and outbound traffic to the South Pacific, an ideal location for businesses targeting regional and international trade. -

Ambassador Nair Presents Credentials To UAE

DIWALI in Rakiraki was a muted affair in terms of lights and celebrations but the fighting spirit of the business community more than made up for the lack of fanfare, said interim special administrator Seini Raiko-Vunivutu. Ms Raiko-Vunivutu said the establishment of new businesses and the commitment shown by Rakiraki's enterprises was a real reflection of the new dawn signalled by the festival of lights. "The Diwali season is the celebration of a new year. This should give us emphasised focus on new beginnings and an opportunity to move past old hang-ups. "The best treats that you can give yourself this season is to look ahead and focus on the future but this is only possible if you let bygones be bygones," she said. "Four new local businesses are starting up in Rakiraki next week and this is a good indication of increased investor confidence in the growing town.

Festival Of Lights Brings In New Business

"People of Ra are very resilient and will always get back on their feet, no matter how difficult the unforeseen circumstances. "I wish everyone in Ra, and the kai Ra in Fiji and abroad who have always contributed constructively to development discussions for the town, a very fruitful Diwali and prosperous New Year," she added. Meanwhile, staff of the Ra Subdivisional Hospital hosted all government agencies and stakeholders to Diwali lunch at the nurses home in Rakiraki. Chief guest, Ms Vunivutu-Raiko acknowledged the spirit of teamwork and oneness that prompted the initiative. "This is the first time that a government agency has hosted such an event in my term here and is an indication of the new mind-set that is prevalent now in Rakiraki. "The support shown by the agencies and families of staff represented here today confirms this," she said.

Fijis first diplomatic representative to the United Arab Emirates H.E Ambassador Ravindran Robin Nair presented his credentials to the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi. In his statement to His Highness, Ambassador Nair conveyed the greetings from His Excellency and President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau to the Government and people of the United Arab Emirates, adding that as a developing island nation in the Pacific Region, our diplomatic presence in the UAE would benefit Fiji in many ways, including through greater economic and technical cooperation and advancement.

His Excellency, the President of Republic of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau was re-appointed for another three years at a swearing-in ceremony at Government House. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, alongside Cabinet ministers, dignitaries and the diplomatic corp. Ratu Epeli was sworn-in by Chief Justice Sir Anthony Gates, who administered the Oath of allegiance and the Oath for the Due Execution of the Office of the President. His Excellency following his reappointment ceremony inspected a full military guard of honor. Nailatikau, 71, was sworn in as president until 2015 under an executive decree issued by the military government. The appointment, announced on the government's website, means Nailatikau, a former army commander credited with guiding Bainimarama through his military career, will be president when Fiji holds long-awaited elections set for 2014.

The largely ceremonial role of president was traditionally appointed by Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs, which Bainimarama suspended after taking power in 2006 and eventually abolished earlier this year. Fiji is preparing a new constitution after experiencing four coups since 1987, largely stemming from tensions between indigenous Fijians and ethnic Indians descended from labourers brought in by the British in the colonial era. Bainimarama tore up Fiji's previous constitution and replaced all judges with hand-picked officials in 2009, after a court ruled his coup was illegal. He has said the new constitution will enshrine principles such as one-personone-vote, an independent judiciary and transparent governance, as well as concentrating on establishing a secular, corruption-free state. He reneged on a pledge to hold elections in 2009, saying Fiji was not yet ready for democracy, resulting in the country's suspension from the Commonwealth and the Pacific Islands Forum.

The three remand prisoners who escaped from the Nadi Police Station cell at 8:30pm Tuesday are still on the run. The hunt continues for the three in the Western Division. Meanwhile, Chief of Operations ACP Rusiate Tudravu said that they have been given 48 hours to establish what happened. The media questioned ACP Tudravu whether they have established if the three remand prisoners were locked up in the cell and how many officers were at the Nadi Police Station when the three men escaped. ACP Tudravu said this will be known soon. Police confirm checkpoints have been set up and a team from Suva is now assisting in the search in the Western division. The three people on the run are 32 year old Daniel Thomas, 39 year old Maleli Vinakasigadua and 26 year old Nacanieli Bakata. Thomas and Vinakasigadua are from Lautoka while Bakata is from Lami. The three are commonly known for committing offences such as breaking into cars, home invasion, robbery with violence and pick pocketing. People are advised to contact the nearest police station if they have any information on the whereabouts of the three. ACP Tudravu has a message for the three men and people who may harbor them. Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said all attempts are now focused on recapturing the three prisoners while equal priority is being given to finding out if Police officers were sleeping on the job resulting in the escape.

Intercontinental Resort and Spa in Sigatoka this Saturday will take place under a new format. For the first time since the inception of the awards in 1993, awards will be sector based and not country based, meaning exporters will not be rewarded for exporting to a certain country anymore but will compete based on the sector in which produce and export their goods and services from. The change also reduces the number of awards at the event. A total of 12 awards will now be given compared to the 19 which was up for grabs previously. Investment Fiji which is the organiser of the event received a record 110 applications for the 12 awards and the winners have been judged by an

Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will be the chief guest at the Vodafone and Westpac sponsored event.

Fijis mahogany industry will now be more modern and responsive to the need of all ordinary Fijians, says Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. Speaking at the Fiji Mahogany Industry Council meeting in Suva, Bainimarama said in the past people knew that mahogany resources were mismanaged but government will now not allow a few people to benefit at the expense of others. Bainimarama said they will create the mahogany industry in order for people to realise its true potential and the industry will get maximum returns for the economy including landowners and all Fijians. There was lack of willingness to adapt

to modern practices and management in getting the maximum return through value-adding of one own resources, said Bainimarama. While there was much talk of reform, there was little ability to actually design and implement reform, he said. He said government has implemented two new decrees designed to implement international best practices in the management of mahogany resources and ensure landowners and all Fijians receive great benefits. He also said the main focus of these reforms is to ensure that there are restricted number of operators licensed to purchase mahogany with key criteria being value-adding in Fiji and export of Fiji mahogany as a distinct product.

Drastic Drop In Students

The expiry of agricultural land leases has affected the student numbers at Waidamudamu Primary School in Labasa. Normally, the school has a roll of 160 and 180 students but this has dropped to 40 in the past three years. Waidamudamu Primary School head teacher Gaj Raj Prasad said farmers had been evicted from the area which used to thrive on cane farming. Mr Prasad said the school reduced their staff and was running composite classes because of the school roll they now had. Waidamudamu cane farmer and school manager Raj Patel said farmers in the area were evicted after the expiry of their leases and they chose to find greener pastures in other towns, with many of them moving to Viti Levu. "It is very expensive to renew leases with the high fees that we have and a farmer normally has to pay lease renewal fee of approximately $12,000 and an annual land rent of $700 to $800," said Mr Patel. "This is very expensive and many farmers have opted to move out as we cannot cater for other expenses incurred during the process of cane farming, taking into account the cost of labour, fertiliser and transportation. "This area used to thrive with cane farmers which saw the need to build a school but the current school roll is evidence of the amount of farmers who have moved out and opted for other means of generating income other than cane farming, thus affecting the school roll in this cane belt area," he said. Principal education officer North Seru Curuivalu confirmed the Education Ministry in the Northern Division had identified that the expiry of cane farming leases directly affected the school roll in cane farming areas in the north as farmers opted to move to areas with better opportunities. "Not only has this affected the school roll but it has also affected the grade of schools in that they have dropped," said Mr Curuivalu.

Rare Solar Eclipse View Marred By Cloud Cover In Capital

Voiceless, Powerless, Helpless

Informal settlers want to see poverty issues addressed in the constitution. Ben Vakaloloma, a representative from the informal settlement, said poverty was a reality in Fiji. Mr Vakaloloma made the comments during a public seminar on the challenges of poverty to the constitution organised by the Constitution Commission at the University of the South Pacific. He said for the past 50 years, he was saddened to witness the poor and marginalised people of this nation in poverty and their stories. He said poverty through the eyes of the poor meant not having decent homes to live in, not having a job and not getting just wages. He said most of them completed Form Four while employers wanted applicants with Form Six and Form Seven qualification to apply for jobs. "Poverty for us means not being able to send our children to school or they drop out because we cannot pay their school fees," he said. Mr Vakaloloma said it also meant not being able to provide nutritious food for the family and feeling humiliated, worthless and excluded. He said it also meant being voiceless, powerless, dependent, feeling helpless and hopeless because there seemed to be no future for them and their children.

The most anticipated and rare total solar eclipse occurred on Tuesday. However, Fiji only witnessed the partial transit of the total solar eclipse. University of the South Pacific Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment technician Neil Singh said this was because of an intense cloud cover. "People in the Western Division could have witnessed this epic event," he said.

The eclipse started at 8.56 am and ended at 11.56 am with the greatest eclipse totality lasting just about four minutes. Mr Singh said the significance of such eclipse was it gave scientists the opportunity to calculate distances between the sun, moon and earth. Solar eclipses occur when the moon lines up with the sun, blotting the solar disk from a viewer's perspective on earth.

Price Of Root Crops Soars

Rakiraki is a major supplier of root crops for various markets in the country but its own people have been deprived of cassava and dalo for months. Farmers prefer to sell their produce to middlemen for export because of the higher price offered. A visit to the Rakiraki Market revealed bare stalls. Only three bundles of dalo were in an area usually taken up by root crop vendors. Vendor Mere Ali, 58, said large-scale cassava farmers no longer sold root crops at the market. "Only vegetables are plenty right now. People are also not buying root crops because it is too expensive and the quantity is less. Previously, the price of a heap of cassava would be $3 for a very large heap but now its $5 and more," said Mrs Ali. She said the price of dalo had also increased in previous years. "We used to get them for about $7 or $8 a bundle but now its $15 or $20 each," she said. Mrs Ali added root crops were usually supplied from as far as Nasau, Vanuakula and Waimicia.

Prime Minister Pays Tribute To Women Across The Country

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama paid tribute to women across the country; not only for the role they play in their households but the positive impacts it creates for our nation. At the opening of the Buretu Womens Centre in Buretu village in Tailevu, the head of government reminded villagers on governments position regarding the role of women and the various reforms targeting women empowerment in the country. Designed to introduce various economic opportunities for women from surrounding villages, the new resource centre will provide these women with the necessary information for establishing new projects which includes commercial farming, baking and handicraft for eco tourism. Each of these centers will specialise in making a particular product. Here in Buretu the plan is to produce Virgin Coconut Oil and handicrafts. It is governments intention that this new centre will not only generate money for the Buretu community, but also for Fijis rural economic development and provide those opportunities for the benefit of our future generations, PM Bainimarama said. The new resource centre is a step forward for women in the province

of Tailevu as it will provide the most relevant and updated information on laws and policies concerning them. My Governments reform includes protecting and promoting the rights of women and children in the country, PM Bainimarama said. You are the ones who have always been neglected and often, your rights and aspirations have been ignored by previous governments. Todays development gave the Prime Minister the opportunity to challenge men around the country to acknowledge the role played by women across the country. I am challenging all the men here today to change our perception about women. Government has introduced new laws to strengthen women rights, to battle against discrimination and to promote gender equality. This alone cannot bring about change if we do not change our mindsets. This is where us men, can assist to empower women to be able to stand for their rights in all communities across the country. Meanwhile Fijis Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni confirmed that her ministry will continue to open centers across the country as part of governments overall efforts to promote and protect the rights of women.

Fiji's Partnership Focus In Tehran

Fiji shared its experiences on partnership between the private and public sectors for development in Tehran, Iran this week. A delegation from the Fijian government attended the 3rd AsiaPacific Ministerial conference for Public-Private Partnership [PPP] for infrastructure development held in the Iranian capital. It was headed by the Minister for Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Captain Timoci Lesi Natuva. The meeting was attended by senior government officials from 24 member countries. They focused on the sharing of knowledge, experiences, ideas, policy options and information on the implementation of PPP modality for infrastructure development and services in Asia and the Pacific. The conference also provided an opportunity for countries of the Asia-Pacific region to review the progress made in implementing the Jakarta Declaration on Public Private Partnership [PPP] for Infrastructure Development in Asia and the Pacific. That was adopted at the 2nd AsiaPacific Ministerial conference on Public-Private Partnerships for Infrastructure Development held in Jakarta on April 17, 2010. Among the 24 member countries present, Fiji was one of the four countries which presented its experience on PPP. Presenting Fijis

case was the Deputy Secretary Operation [DSO] of the Ministry for Works and Transport, Manasa Lesuma who accompanied the Minister. Captain Natuva also presented a ministerial policy statement of Fijis PPP policy and framework on infrastructure development. The PPP conference focused on four different infrastructure areas such as transportation, energy, water and waste management and communications, it was an avenue to bring the public and private sectors together with the objective of undertaking a project, with each party retaining its own identity and responsibility, based upon a careful division of responsibilities and risks. PPP differs from the traditional method of carrying out public sector projects by transferring a significant element of risks to the private sector. The public and private sectors develop, carry out and manage the projects based upon these shared risks, budgeted costs and expected returns. Participants hoped that the conference would help widen and deepen debate on issues of interest and concern in this area. The meeting culminated with the adoption of the Tehran Declaration on Public Private Partnership for infrastructure development in Asia and the Pacific. The meeting was hosted and organised by the United Nations ESCAP and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Various sexual offences targeting young women have increased in the country. Fiji police force director legal superintendent of police sakeo raikaci said the vulnerable age group of women targeted by perpetrators were from 14 to 24 years. Superintendent raikaci said the high number of young women being sexually abused were from the southern, eastern and western divisions. "The main reason behind the increase is negligence (on the parents' part)," he said. Ssp raikaci said most parents

were unaware of their children's whereabouts. "Most parents are not getting their priorities right. Often they are seen drinking grog or socialising and when something happens to their children they blame the police," he said. Ssp raikaci said the number of young girls falling victims to sexual abuse could decrease if parents were more responsible. Meanwhile, the fiji police force has signed a memorandum of agreement with medical services pacific that will help elevate the standard of treatment for victims of sexual offences.

Fijian Ends Australian Detention Protest

Fiji Bowling Team Presents I-Tatau

Fijian man being held at Sydney's Villawood Detention Centre has been talked down from a roof-top after a three-day protest. Two men and a woman have been protesting on a roof-top at the centre since Monday, saying they fear for their lives if they are sent back to Fiji. A spokeswoman for the Immigration Department has confirmed one of the men was talked down from the roof and also confirmed that no concessions were given to the man and there'll be no change in the outcome of his case. Australian Federal Police were called to the centre earlier on Wednesday to help immigration officials and trained negotiators to end the three-day standoff. They're continuing to negotiate with the second man and the woman who remain on the roof. The three began their protest on Monday, saying they feared deportation to Fiji. Ian Rintoul from the Refugee Action Coalition told the reporter it was unclear whether the three were being given any food or water by staff, but other detainees were prevented from doing so. He said Serco staff had tried to smash

their way into the ceiling of the building with axes, and had laid out mattresses around the complex. "Mattresses do nothing for the fall. The staff there is just irresponsible," Mr Rintoul said. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called on Immigration Minister Chris Bowen to intervene by asking police negotiators to resolve the impasse. Senator Hanson-Young said a coronial inquiry into the 2010 death of Fijian man Josefa Rauluni, who jumped from a roof at the detention complex, recommended police, be called in to prevent similar incidents. "I'm very concerned that as of this morning we still hadn't seen the police negotiators brought in to bring those people off the roof," she said. "Last time, two years ago, when we saw a man take his own life from the very same building, the coroner's report specifically required that there be a change to the protocols and the police negotiators would be brought in immediately if any similar cases occurred. "It's up to Chris Bowen as the immigration minister to make sure that happens, and he should do that today."

The Fiji Bowling Association presented their i-tautau or traditional farewell to His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at Government House. President Nailatikau shared a few words of support for the team before they depart Fiji for the World Bowling Championship in Australia this week. His Excellency commended the team and reminded them on the task ahead. At the same time, His Excellency reminded the Fiji sporting delegation about previous teams that have represented Fiji in similar tournaments

and the sacrifices made. The team knows what to expect and the conditions however you must remember that you are representing Fiji and especially your families, President Ratu Nailatikau said. Ratu Epeli Nailatikau also reassured the team that Fiji will be following the results and wished the team all the best for the tournament. Fiji will be fielding the mens and womens team that will represent the country at the three week championship in Adelaide, Australia.

New Bank, More Competition

Banking competition is growing as BRED Bank from France moves in to the Fiji market. ANZ Fiji has announced an interest rate reduction of 0.75 per cent per annum on its on-year fixed owneroccupied Home Loan and Residential Investment Property Loan. This came into effect on Monday of this week. The rate for these one-year fixed loans will now be 4.5 per cent per annum. The Fixed Rate is valid for applications received before February 28, 2013. ANZ head of retail banking Fiji, Graham Meecham said: We are very pleased to offer this reduced one-year fixed home loan rate. Fixed loans are popular because they can provide customers with the security of having a set loan repayment each month, he said. We understand that purchasing a house is the biggest single financial commitment most people will make, so this is a great way for customers to manage their household budget more effectively. With the new rate applied to an owner occupied one-year fixed loan, customers can save approximately $521 in repayments per year on a 25year $100,000 home loan compared with the previous rate.

Innovation Award (sponsored by Air New Zealand Aviation Institute) Ranamila Joji Chute "Fijian-born Ranamila is a Year 13 student at Birkenhead College in Auckland and has long been fascinated by all things aviation. He is a frequent visitor to the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute and worked at a rally-car company during his summer holidays. Outside of his passion for aviation, 18-year-old Ranamila has displayed a strong community focus through volunteer work with his local church in Northcote and work as a peer-tutor at Birkenhead College. He helped establish the volunteer organisation Storm.co with his church youth group. Ranamila hopes that the Air New Zealand Innovation award will help achieve his dream of landing an Air New Zealand apprenticeship." AVanua Levu native Ranamila Joji Chute made history when he scooped the coveted New Zealand Prime Minister's Pacific Youth Award for Innovation in Wellington. The Pacific Youth Award for Innovation is one of only five given to Pacific Island youths in New Zealand. Joji beat about 100 applicants to be the only Fijian on the list of awardees. The award recognises a young Pacific Islander who has demonstrated innovative thought or action to solve an engineering challenge leading to an improvement in their community, church or school. In an interview after his win, an ecstatic Joji said his prize was an aviation engineering course worth $NZ7400 ($F10,800) from Air New Zealand. The budding aircraft engineer said he was still excited from the win that had given him a solid start to his future. "It's really been an exciting day for me. I just want to give thanks to God. I want to be one of the best in this field and I believe that winning this award will help me to achieve that," Joji said. "The win will allow me to start an aircraft engineering course with Air NZ and I'll get a four-year apprenticeship with them when I'm done," the former Delainamasi Government School student said. He said his aim to become an engineer was after seeing his father Alfred Chute work in that profession at Suva's Carlton Brewery. Mother Asenaca Chute said she was proud of her son and the award reflected his hard work. Joji was nominated by NZ mentoring program - the C-Me Mentoring Foundation Trust run by local John Kotoisuva.

Making Fiji the preferred capital market in South Pacific needs thinking outside the box, says Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) governor, Barry Whiteside. At the Bank, we have for sometime had a big picture outside the box vision of developing Fiji into the Preferred Capital Markets Centre in the South Pacific, Mr Whiteside said. Being preferred capital market means that we provide investors and issuers with an environment necessary to grow their investments. This means that companies and investors in other Pacific island countries will look to Fiji first as the place where they can raise funds for capital growth and investment opportunities. He added: We provide a safe investment choice both local and overseas investors. How to do this? Five suggested strategic plans were put in place that would lay out options for the key stakeholders. 1. Increasing public awareness for our markets 2. Increasing products and expanding the markets 3. Capacity building in the capital markets 4. Improving regulatory and legal environment 5. Developing Fiji as the preferred capital market in the South Pacific Mr Whiteside said: Basically the aim is to get everyone who is an expert in their own field to give their points of view on the strategies in place. Ministry of Finance permanent

Fiji Aims To Become Capital Market Hub, Says Whiteside

secretary Filimone Waqabaca said the Fijian government was currently strengthening the financial services sector to improve its capital markets. The Master Plan Government had laid its vision to strengthen the financial services sector through the establishment of the Capital Markets Master Plan under Pillar 5 of the Peoples Charter, Mr Waqabaca said. The formulation of the 10 Year Capital Market Master Plan, therefore, occurs at a critical juncture, as we work to position our capital market to fulfill a complementary role in support of economic development. Compared to our 40 years of post independence development experience, Fijis capital market is relatively young. He said that taking stock and reassessing Fijis direction towards this was underway. Fijis savings rate is relatively quite low by standard and even lower if we exclude mandatory savings with the FNPF. A well developed capital market would encourage more savings and diversify the source of investment funds. Another key advantage of the capital market is that it provides an alternative source of financing to complement bank financing. This will reduce the over dependence on the banking sector and spread the concentration of credit risk. Mr Whiteside said RBF was committed to the development of the Master Plan for capital markets development and to see the plan through the next 10 years.

Scholars And Professionals Urged To Apply For Award

Scholars and professionals from a range of fields in the private and public sectors, civil society organisations, academia and health, are being urged to apply for the prestigious Greg Urwin Award. Jointly facilitated by the Pacific Leadership Program (PLP) and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), the award provides financial support to the tune of $A25,000 ($F46,000) for recipients to take up workplace attachments for several months with either a Pacific regional or Australian organisation. The award is in memory of the late Mr Urwin who held the post of secretary general of the PIF from 2003 to 2008 and at his family's request, special consideration would be given to applicants in the health sector who wished to pursue projects related to cancer awareness, treatment or research relevant to the Pacific situation. "The recipients are chosen through a competitive process that considers academic performance, leadership qualities and areas of professional interest, in particular, those areas that would be of significant benefit to Pacific Island countries. The deadline for applications is November 30 and an application form can be downloaded from the PLP website: www.plp.org. fj," PLP said.

All Nations Christian Fellowship (ANCF) church general superintendent Epeli Ratabacaca was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Suva High Court for sexual assault. Ratabacaca, 54, will serve a term of imprisonment of two years and will not be eligible for parole until he has served a minimum term of 15 months imprisonment. A request by the Ratabacacas counsel, Filimoni Vosarogo, was declined by Justice Paul Madigan because he did not express any remorse by way of a guilty plea or some other expression of regret and there is none in this case. He was initially served a four-year term, two for fondling the victims naked breasts and another two for breaching the trust of the victim and for the cynical and manipulative preplanning. This was reduced to two years following mitigation and based on his clean record. In passing the judgment, Justice Paul Madigan said Ratabacaca, 54, had

In treating the lady in this manner you were in gross breach of trust. She trusted you as a pastor and counselor to help her alleviate her post natal symptoms of anxiety and depression themselves of your reputation for prayer and counseling and you abused their faith in you, Madigan said. There is a need to improve hospitals, health centers and education from both a capital and operating perspective, says Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA) president Camacakau Raimuria. In the association's budget submission to the Ministry of Finance, he said the level of service and the standard of practices at those centers needed to be improved as well. "Commitment to education should be continued. Focus should be given for improving school facilities, improving academic resources and introduce strategies and measures to develop a pool of qualified, skilled and competent teachers," Mr Raimuria said. He also said there was a need to improve the teacher to student ratio to enhance education standards. "Introduction of caps on number of students per class may also be appropriately considered as part of improving this overall ratio," Mr Raimuria said. He said government's 2013 Budget strategy framework contained commendable initiatives in the areas of government debt and expenditure

Boost For Import Substitution Industries

Fishing crew unloading fish ready for export. INDUSTRIES and sectors that assist with import substitution, boost foreign reserves, have high employment numbers and show potential for growth should be strongly encouraged. This was highlighted in a submission from the Fiji Institute of Accountants to the Ministry of Finance 2013 budget submission. FIA president Camacakau Raimuria said sectors and initiatives for consideration included the agriculture sector, export sector, hotel industry, fishing, garment industry and ICT industry. He said the agriculture sector should get tax incentives and other support. "Alternatively, current provisions should be amended to allow for tax incentives on a pro-rata basis where turnover exceeded $300,000, and should be available to all kinds of agricultural activities," Mr Raimuria said. Currently, he said tax incentives for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were available only if total turnover was about $300,000 per annum and was available for selected prescribed activities in agriculture, fisheries and tourism sectors only. He said the encouragement of export industries that contributed to foreign reserves was important to an economy like Fiji.

New Tourism Brand Identity Unveiled

Fijian Students Leave For Morocco

Tourism Fiji now has a new global advertising and marketing campaign which will be launched to the world in early 2013. The new campaign is the result of extensive efforts by Tourism Fiji to boost the returns for the Fijian Government from this critical industry, increase tourist revenue and showcase the spirit of Fiji to the world. An extensive research project on Fijis marketing positioning by the Tourism Fiji Board revealed that the current branding, Fiji Me was not having the desired impact globally, thus a new marketing strategy was needed to differentiate the country from all other tourism destinations. Attorney-General and Minister for Tourism, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who unveiled the brand in Nadi said the new

campaign is designed to encourage tourists from around the world to make Fiji their number one holiday and conference destination. It will showcase a distinctive new brand identity and slogan, Fiji Where happiness finds you, which captures the unique spirit and essence of Fiji and its people and identifies why Fiji stands apart from other destinations in the region. The new global advertising campaign, which has been developed by New Zealand-based ad agency, ColensoBBDO is designed to identify the special qualities that make Fiji emerge from the sea of sameness with other island destinations. It features spectacular images of the spirit of Fiji captured by worldrenowned internationally-acclaimed photographer, Steve McCurry.

PM Commends Fijians Coming Back To Invest

PRIME Minister Josaia Bainimarama has commended Fijians who continue to return to Fiji to invest in various commercial activities around the country. The head of government highlighted the significance of this adding that it creates employment and allows revenue to trickle down to various local communities. Prime Minister Bainimarama made these comments when he opened the Votualevu Complex in Nadi this week. The $3million investment was made by Bobby Khan, who had been away in New Zealand for 22 years, and took advantage of Governments dual citizenship policy. Your return to your motherhood shows the success of my Governments program to make multiple citizenship available to former citizens who previously had to renounce their Fijian birthright. You are now home among your friends, family and fellow citizens. We pay tribute to your success in New Zealand, Prime Minister Bainimarama said. My Government assists businesses because they provide people with jobs and sustainable livelihoods. He urged other Fijians living abroad to return home to help build Fiji further.

35 Pc Living In Poverty
THIRTY-five per cent of the population in Fiji is living in poverty. The statistics was provided by permanent secretary for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Govind Sami. Speaking in a seminar The Challenges of Poverty to the Constitution held at the University of the South Pacific last week, Mr Sami said poverty had increased in rural areas but decreased in urban areas. "Poverty remains high...at 35 per cent of the population," Mr Sami said. "Incidents of rural poverty are 43 per cent and urban poverty are 18 per cent. "The overall poverty reduction is regionally driven while urban poverty has declined significantly, rural poverty remains virtually unchanged," he said. Mr Sami said the Northern Division had the highest rate of poverty while the Central Division had the lowest. "The Northern Division which corresponds to the island of Vanua Levu, is quite homogenous recording 53 per cent poverty across the division," he said. Mr Sami said increase in rural poverty was attributed to decline in relevance of the agricultural sector. "Highest rate of poverty is among agricultural workers and the largest is among construction, tourism and finance workers," he said. Mr Sami said households with children and elderly were significantly poor. "Poverty increases with household size with the number of children and elderly." He said higher poverty rate for these groups remained an important concern in the country. Mr Sami said there was also a strong link between low education and poverty. "Those with no formal education contributed to 47 per cent of the poverty rate while those with secondary level education contributed to 10 per cent of the poverty rate," he said. He added the Fiji government remained committed to reducing poverty to a negligible level by 2015.

Families Join War Veterans At Remembrance Day

The light drizzle of rain failed to dampen the spirits of war veterans and family members who marched in Suva to commemorate the 2012 Remembrance Day. Celebrated worldwide to commemorate those that lost their lives in past wars, Remembrance Day in Fiji saw war veterans, their wives and their children march through the streets of Suva and to Battery Hill. The head of state His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau joined

the head of government, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and other government officials to commemorate the day. Heads and representatives of diplomatic missions based in Fiji also took part in the ceremonies. The event began with a Dawn Service at the Military cemetery in Suva followed by a march through town. Those that participated were later transported to the Fiji War Memorial complex in Veiuto to take part in the commemoration ceremony.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama reassured Governments commitment towards providing adequate service delivery to the public. He made the comments at the opening the of first Government service centre in Nausori which is expected to make government services and facilities more accessible to the public. I regard the delivery of basic services to all Fijians as the Governments main priority. I want Government to keep its promises to the people to deliver, not just pay lip service to the idea which is what we all know happened in the past, he said. Its not good enough to make speeches in Suva. I have made it my mission to get out into the country, to meet ordinary people understand their concern and what I can to address their needs The opening of the service centre represents a milestone in governments attempt to decentralise services for all Fijians, especially those living in rural and remote parts of the country. At todays event, the head of government reminded civil servants on their role and how they can impact the lives of ordinary Fijians.

PM - Service Delivery Is Government's Priority

GSC means service .We are serving the people the taxpayers and their dependents who deserve much higher standards of attention, efficiency, courtesy and respect, he said. Prime Minister Bainimarama added that government has reviewed and reengineered the functions, systems and processes of the various ministries. Commodore Bainimarama said, government is working to change the culture of the Civil service so that it responds better to the needs of our people. But fortunately the majority of civil servants work diligently, competently and wear the tag of servant to the nation with pride, he said. The Prime Minister appealed to those who will resource these GSCs to set a new standard of service, to show our people that Government really cares. The resource centre will provide services for social welfare recipients, students to access scholarship forms and the general public to access information on all government departments. Meanwhile other centers are expected to open in the western and northern divisions.

It is a quiet Diwali this year for the Kumar family in Nausori as they try to make ends meet with their meager budget. Yogesh Kumar, 39, a taxi driver said business has not been good this year and with the growing inflation, they have had to settle for a quieter Diwali than they would have liked. Kumar said last year was also the same but it never stopped them from celebrating the special day. Meanwhile, another resident Jone

He said everyone should have the right to celebrate as long as they want and to enjoy Diwali the way they want. Diwali is celebrated by Hindus around Fiji.

For the third year in a row, Apple was named number one in a new annual survey of the top 10 most innovative companies. Almost 80 percent of the respondents in the 700-company survey by management consulting firm Booz & Company named Apple as one of the top three most innovative companies in the world. Google, which took the second spot overall, ahead of 3M, was listed in the top three by 43 percent of respondents. "Apple's innovation focuses on bringing together different parts of an ecosystem and tightly integrating them together with meticulous attention to detail" Reticle Research analyst Ross Rubin was quoted as saying by CNN. "They refine consumer capabilities in an approachable offering with broad appeal," Rubin told Wired magazine, a leading tech publication, via e-mail. Samsung, number four on Booz's list, takes a different approach than Apple, making a point to incorporate the latest technologies into its products, like

large OLED displays and NFC. "Other companies, like Dell, focus on relatively unglamorous innovation in process and manufacturing," Rubin said. And then there are companies like Google, whose innovation is largely left to prototypes and concepts, things like Project Glass. "I think Apple is a leading innovator among tech companies - but innovation comes from many companies, and it's easy to point to clear examples from many of Apple's competitors," Forrester analyst Charles Golvin saiad. Interestingly, innovation (at least in the surveyors' eyes) is not tied with R&D spending. Apple's absolute R&D expenditures rank it 16th within its industry, CNN noted. Microsoft, the top R&D spender in the software and Internet area, was ranked as the sixth most innovative company. Golvin thinks Apple will continue to be a leader in innovation in the coming years, despite doubts about the company now that Steve Jobs is out of the picture.

A man has been bailed by a New Zealand court for allegedly planning to attack the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. Sam Bracanov was charged with planning to throw horse manure at the visiting royals. The 76-year-old "known anti-royalist" was ordered to stay at least 500 metres (550 yards) away from the royal couple as part of his bail conditions. Charles and Camilla are in New Zealand on a seven-day Diamond Jubilee tour. Bracanov was ordered to re-appear at the Auckland District Court later this month. Police said he was detained on Monday about an hour before the couple arrived at Auckland quayside to meet wellwishers. In a statement on the New Zealand Police website said the man - from the Mangere suburb of Auckland - was

Bracanov was convicted and fined for spraying air fresheners at Prince Charles to "remove the stink of royalty" during a previous visit to Auckland in 1994. A small group of protesters held up placards during the walkabout on Monday, one of which read "Get a Job Royal Bludgers", a New Zealand slang term for someone who avoids work. Prince Charles and the duchess had earlier met some of the country's top sportsmen and women at a national sports centre in Auckland.

Britain will cut off all aid to India by 2015 in a major overhaul of the countries' financial relations. The aid had been a controversial issue in Britain, with critics questioning why money should given to a country that is growing increasingly rich and even has its own space program. The move is set to save the UK government around $300 million and will be phased out over the next three years. The British government says it will signal a new type of relationship, focusing more on trade. International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: "It's time to

The Indian government has supported the decision, but some charities have raised concerns about its impact on India's most vulnerable people. Last year, Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh announced a $5 billion aid credit line for Africa. India, which became independent from British rule in 1947, is now the third largest investor in Britain and its companies own flagship brands including Jaguar Land Rover.

Immigration authorities have serious concerns about the health of a man being held on Nauru who has not eaten for 33 days. The Iranian asylum seeker, known as Omid, is on a hunger strike along with hundreds of other detainees and medical experts say it is now a lifethreatening situation. There are 386 detainees in the Nauru immigration detention facility and 305 of them are on a hunger strike. Another asylum seeker on Nauru, Said Muhammad from Pakistan, says Omid is seriously ill. "You will just find him having a skeleton. The doctor told him that very soon your brain and your heart will stop working," he said. "He is just laying on a bed all day and night, he is even not able to walk properly." A spokesman for the Immigration Department says the Iranian man is currently in a stable condition. He says the man is being closely monitored by doctors at the detention centre but authorities are concerned. Mr Muhammad says most of the others on the hunger strike have not eaten since November 1. "The guys are feeling very weak, more than 80 guys collapsed because of hunger strike," he said. But the Department of Immigration

Nauru Detainee Has Not Eaten For 33 Days

FLOODWATERS have drenched most of Venice and led to the evacuation of 200 people in Tuscany, as bad weather hit northern Italy. In Venice itself, heavy rains and winds from the south triggered "acqua alta" (high water) and 70 per cent of the city was flooded, with sea levels reaching a peak of 1.5 metres above normal before receding slightly, they said. In Tuscany, around 200 people were evacuated because of heavy rains that flooded homes and caused mudslides, local officials said. The most affected region was the province of Massa and Carrara, which produces the famous Carrara marble. In Massa di Carrara alone, some 50 people were evacuated and a car was carried away by an overflowing river, but the couple in the vehicle were

saved by firefighters. The authorities have urged the local population to avoid going into the streets and to stay in the the upper floors of their homes. In Pisa, some streets have been without electricity following the floods. In the large Tuscan port of Livorno, civil defence forces were on alert because of the heavy rains. In Liguria, the region bordering Tuscany, 30 people had to be evacuated, the authorities said. In anticipation of the floods two days ago, the authorities issued warnings and planned security measures to avoid any casualties after 13 people died in Tuscany and Liguria a year ago. The bad weather was heading slowly towards the centre of the country and was set to hit Rome where civil defence forces have been put on alert.

disputes the hunger strike's scale. A spokesman says the majority of detainees are eating and drinking regularly. Joining the strike Monday 24 new detainees - mostly Afghans, but also Iranians, Iraqis, and Sri Lankans - were transferred from Australia to Nauru. Mr Muhammad says they have already joined the hunger strike. "When they saw the conditions here they also just joined the hunger strike," he said. Louise Newman, a professor of psychology at Monash University, says hunger striking is just the beginning. "Hunger striking, obviously dehydration, but then we'll start to see suicidal thoughts and suicidal behaviours," she said. Amnesty International is also highly concerned about the ongoing hunger strike. It is planning to visit the detention centre later in the month. "We are hoping that the access we receive on Nauru will mirror the access that we get when we visit centres on the mainland," Dr Graham Thom, the organisation's refugee spokesman, said. "Obviously Nauru is a sovereign country, so we're not necessarily guaranteed that, but we're going there under the assumption that we will be able to have full access."

Overweight Bus Drivers Paid To Go To Gym

Tasmanian bus drivers who weigh more than 130 kilograms will be taken off the job from next week. Drivers who exceed Metro Tasmania's weight limit will be put on other duties and given six months to slim down. Metro will also give its heavier drivers a free medical consultation and pay them to attend a gym. Metro's chief executive Heather Haselgrove says it is a safety policy because the bus driver seats have a limit of 130 kilograms. "This is now an occupational health and safety issue for us," she said. "If the bus say, bottomed out and went over a dip, the seats could break and that could put the driver at risk so we can't let this happen."

Clinton Arrives In Perth For Defence Talks

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has arrived in Perth ahead of important defence talks between Australia and the US. She was met on the tarmac at Perth's international airport by Australia's Foreign Minister Bob Carr, Defence Minister Stephen Smith, ambassador to the US Kim Beazley, and WA Premier Colin Barnett. Ms Clinton met Prime Minister Julia Gillard, ahead of the opening of annual Australia-United States Ministerial Consultation, (AUSMIN). Mr Smith says Australia and the US will use the talks to discuss plans for increased military co-operation. He says America's top diplomat in Asia has made it clear he is not concerned about Australia's defence spending cuts. There have been reports Kurt Campbell, who is in Perth for the talks, will raise concerns about Australia's decision to cut billions of dollars from the defence budget. Mr Smith says the diplomat was misrepresented. "When we greeted secretary Clinton at the airport, assistant secretary Campbell was there and the first comment he

made to ambassador Beazley was how egregiously misrepresented he'd been on his comments over the weekend," he said. "So, if we have a discussion about defence spending it will be in the context of we're all under pressure." Topics are expected to include US access to air bases in Australia's north and whether American warships will be permitted to increase their use of Perth's Stirling Naval Base. Mr Smith says one of the reasons the meeting is being held in Perth is because the Indian Ocean is becoming increasingly important. "India is also on the rise and in due course we'll see what some people describe as the Indo-Pacific," he said. "The discussions about HMAS Stirling are the third cab off the rank, the second cab off the rank would be discussions about aerial access. "One of the reasons we are in Perth is because of that Indian ocean focus." U.S. secretary of defence Leon Panetta and Ms Clinton attended a reception hosted by the State Government. AUSMIN is rotated between the two countries.

A homemaker is suspected to have died of cardiac arrest during her husband's funeral rites in Heggadadevana Kote on Tuesday, a family source said. Husband Devaiah (45) of Sattigehundi village, some 65 kms away from Mysore city, died of heart attack on Monday at 1.30 pm. As his wife Kempalamma (33) was ill and bedridden for a few weeks, the family member didn't inform her about Devaiah's death till the funeral rites, which was scheduled for Tuesday. Police confirmed that Kempalamma

collapsed on a chair while performing funeral rites around 12 noon on Tuesday. Later, the husband and wife were taken in a funeral procession and buried side by side in the village. Family members said the couple was married for 18 years. Her husband was taking care of her since then. All of a sudden, Devaiah developed health problem and died of heart attack. A day later, his wife too died of cardiac arrest. The couple leave behind four sons aged between 10 years and 16 years.

The Government is proceeding with a deal with China Southern Airlines which will fast track immigration processing of wealthy Chinese visitors despite Immigration NZ concerns about the risk of "imported criminality". Immigration Minister Nathan Guy was on the back foot as he faced questions about the deal from NZ First Leader Winston Peters. Mr Guy confirmed he had met with China Southern Airlines in April this year and "they did express to me some interest in increasing visitor flows into New Zealand which is a tremendous thing". "Yes, there has been a deal struck with immigration New Zealand and China Southern that is going to allow high net worth individuals to come into New Zealand to ensure we continue to grow our tourism benefits." Mr Guy said "there will be some checks of course that will mean they still will need to get a visa, they still need to meet health and good character checks". However Mr Peters read from a June 11 memo from Immigration NZ which discussed the deal under which China Southern Airlines frequent flyers or Gold and Silver Card holders could have a fast track process for visa applications. "CSA has advised the most important feature for their clients was avoiding the necessity to answer questions relating to financial backing and employment history and to provide evidence of these."

Govt To Offer Fast Track Visas For Wealthy Chinese

Immigration NZ's perspective, according to the memo, was that the gold and silver card holders "are likely to be low risk and would usually therefore get a swift decision on their application". However a September 7 email from the manager of Immigration NZ's Intelligence, Risk & Integrity Division produced by Mr Peters noted the division had not been consulted on the proposal. "China represents a huge set of risks and given the recent experience with students it seems we haven't learned any lessons", the manager said. "One of the key risks is imported criminality but because this is not a recognised adverse outcome for Immigration it seems to be ignored in visa decision making." The manager goes on to say the deal "sets a dangerous precedent". Mr Guy said he didn't agree with those assertions. He said the deal hadn't been rolled out yet, although he was looking forward to it beginning, and it would be reviewed on a monthly basis to ensure it was robust and was working as intended. Mr Peters later said the deal was "clearly an abuse of both New Zealand border controls and the visitor visa system and it is being driven directly from the Minister's office". "It is disgraceful for the Minister to confirm in Parliament that he's prepared to weaken our border security to simply attract a few more tourists."

Big B And Leonardo Dicaprio To Walk The Red Carpet Together

After wooing audience with their sizzling chemistry in Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail and pure romance in Aarakshan, the duo is back to woo the audience yet again with their scorching chemistry in Race 2. Saif

Saif And Deepika Gets Intimate On Bed

Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone gets cozy in a particular scene in Race 2. Extensively shot in Turkey and Cyprus, the film stars Anil Kapoor, Ameesha Patel, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead role.

Amitabh Bachchan is overwhelmed as he will walk the red carpet at the premiere of his Hollywood film The Great Gastby with Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio. A daily quoted a source as saying, "Amitabh is very excited about this premiere. It is scheduled for May next year, a week before the film releases. He is planning to attend the big event. He is the kind of figure who is worshipped in the country but has a global presence. The Indian megastar will be seen in Bas Luhrmanm's 3-D film adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel The Great Gatsby. However, he is humble about the role. "Baz Luhrmann was in India and he called my office. He had an artiste with him who wanted to gift me some paintings. We chatted in our office and at that time we did not really discuss any film project. After almost a

year and half, Baz called me again and said that there was a small role which he wanted me to do. I decided to be a part of the film just as a small gesture," said Bachchan. About his role Meyer Wolfsheim however, Big B stays guarded. "I still do not have the liberty to talk of the film in a personal capacity. Contracts bind me, but this I can say that it was a sheer delight to work with someone of such great genius as Baz Luhrmann and a host of co-stars that have astronomical presence in the world of cinema - Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire and the other greats." The film is about a Midwesterner Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). He is drawn into Gatsby's circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy.

The most awaited films of the year, Jab Tak hain Jaan and Son of Sardaar saw grand releases this Diwali. Both the films released to the theatres on November 13th. After all the controversies about the release

Applying for Canadian Citizenship

Resuming Citizenship What you need to know if you gave up your Canadian citizenship in the past and want to become a Canadian citizen again . If you are a former Canadian citizen and now want to become a citizen again, you must apply to resume your citizenship. However, you should be aware that a new law came into effect on April 17, 2009, amending the Citizenship Act. The new law gives Canadian citizenship to certain individuals who lost it and to others who will be recognized as citizens for the first time. Citizenship will be automatic and retroactive to the date of loss or the date of birth, depending on the situation. People will not have to apply for citizenship, or apply to resume citizenship, but may need to apply for a citizenship certificate to prove their citizenship. All individuals who are Canadian citizens at the time the law comes into effect will keep their citizenship. Renouncing citizenship In some situations, you might decide that you want to renounce (give up) your Canadian citizenship. For example, if you are or want to become a citizen of a country that does not allow dual citizenship, you may have to renounce your Canadian citizenship. For a renunciation of Canadian citizenship to be recognized in Canada, you must make a formal application to renounce your citizenship. If you renounce your Canadian citizenship, you will lose all the rights and privileges of Canadian citizenship. For example: -You will lose the right to travel under a Canadian passport. -You will lose the right to vote. -If you want to return to Canada as a permanent resident, you will have to go through the immigration process. The steps to take if you must give up your Canadian citizenship Search of records A search of records can confirm if you were or were not issued a citizenship certificate. You can search for someone elses records, but you must have their permission first. The Harper government is pushing back the timeframe to balance Ottawas books, which means Canadians may have to wait much longer for tax breaks the Conservatives promised in the last election. Citing the weak global economy, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Tuesday the $26-billion federal budget deficit will not be eliminated until the 2016-17 fiscal year. The revision, contained in Flahertys annual fall economic update, could have a significant impact on Canadians. In the 2011 election campaign, Harper floated several popular tax breaks, including doubling the childrens fitness tax credit, a $2.5-billion measure to allow income-splitting on young families tax returns, a doubling to $10,000-a-year of Tax-Free Savings Accounts limits and an adult fitness tax credit. But all these measures were made dependent on eliminating the federal budget deficit. That was meant to be done by March 31, 2015. Now the government is saying the books wont be balanced until two years later, by March 31, 2017. Any movement on that would have to await a balanced budget, Flaherty acknowledged when asked Tuesday about the income-splitting proposal. The next federal election is expected in 2015. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation ripped into the Harper government over the revision in its deficit-cutting timetable. In last years election, Stephen Harper promised Canadians a balanced budget in 2014-15, followed by major tax relief for Canadians, Gregory Thomas, the federations federal director, said. Mr. Flaherty is breaking the Prime Ministers most important election promise. While expressing concerns about possible economic shocks from Europe and the United States, Flaherty

Federal Budget Fall Update Puts Tax Breaks At Risk

with most advanced countries in the world today, we are in a relatively good position, he told a business audience in Fredericton, N.B. Still, he acknowledged weak global economic conditions are knocking the federal governments deficit-reduction plans off course. As a result, he forecasts a $26-billion budget deficit this year, up sharply from the $21 billion deficit he predicted in the March budget. Weak global demand has translated into lower-than-expected world commodity prices and this, in turn, has lowered the level of (economic growth) and government revenues in our forecast, he said. It will be the second year in a row the Harper government has missed its deficit-reduction target. And Flaherty said the federal budget will not be balanced until the 2016-17 fiscal year. As usual in the fall fiscal and economic update, there were no new tax or spending measures announced Tuesday. The latest assessment is clouded by the risks of financial turmoil in Europe and the United States. Based on private-sector forecasts, the government has already said next years economic growth will come in at 2 per cent, down markedly from the 2.4 per cent cited in the March budget. But Flaherty said Canadas economy could be significantly stronger than expected if U.S. President Barack Obama can successfully work with Congress to avoid the fiscal crunch that threatens to batter the American economy early next year. In his press conference, Flaherty added that his government has contingency plans in hand in case of economic shocks from the U.S. or Europe. Weve been concerned about this subject for many months and we prepare, he said. But he declined to give the details.

An Edmonton woman has launched a $206,000 lawsuit against Air Canada because she claims she suffered second-degree burns from a spilled cup of scalding hot water. According to the statement of claim, Rema Halabi was seated on a flight from Calgary to San Francisco on Nov. 5, 2010, when the flight attendants began to serve refreshments. Halabi alleges one of the flight attendants placed a cup of scalding hot water to make tea on the tray before her. A passenger seated in front of Halabi then leaned back and jarred the tray, spilling the cup of scalding hot water onto Halabi's pubic area, the inside of her thighs and down to her knees, the statement of claim says. Halabi alleges she suffered serious and permanent injuries, including seconddegree burns, blistering and scarring, and

The 35-year-old massage therapist also claims she suffered severe post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, anxiety, panic attacks and bouts of anger. She says all this has limited her ability to earn a living. The statement of claim alleges the flight attendant was negligent for serving passengers scalding hot water, failing to ensure that the water was not of a dangerously high temperature and failing to put a lid on the cup. It alleges Air Canada was negligent for failing to ensure she would be safe on her flight, failing to retain reasonably competent employees and failing to take reasonable steps to train its employees. A statement of defence has not yet been filed. None of Halabi's allegations have been proven in court.

Darryl Walker, the operations manager of recycling company Emterra Environmental, located near the intersection of the crash site, said it was clear from the tangled wreck of the police cruiser that the officer didn't survive. "The engine was sticking right out," Walker said. "It was a mess." A spokesperson for the company of the truck involved, Heaven Transport, said the driver used a fire extinguisher to put out flames in the cruiser and tried unsuccessfully to get Oliver out. Emergency crews arrived soon after and were able to extract Oliver from the wreckage. He was rushed to hospital, but could not be saved. Oliver was a second-generation Mountie whose brother is an RCMP officer in the Lower Mainland. His father, a Mountie in Ottawa, travelled to B.C. along with other family members in the wake of the tragic loss. Officer Killed In Crash Was 2nd Generation Mountie

The Mountie killed in an early-morning crash in Surrey, was part of a family with a long tradition of serving with the RCMP. Const. Adrian Oliver, 28, died when his cruiser collided with a semi truck as he was returning to the Surrey RCMP detachment at the end of his shift at around 5 a.m. Witnesses said paramedics arrived on the scene and found the officer pinned and unconscious in the shattered, grey,

heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Const. Oliver who lost his life today while on duty," Toews said in a statement. "This is a very sad day for all Canadians." About a dozen Mounties gathered at the scene at 148th Street and 64th Avenue in the Newton area to investigate the crash and mourn the loss of one of their own.

At least eight blocks were closed in one direction and four in another, snarling traffic in the industrial area. The big rig was not hauling a trailer at the time, but police have not offered any other details about truck or driver. Investigators have been at the scene of the crash since it happened, trying to determine who had the right-of-way at the intersection.

New Port Mann Bridge Opens Dec. 1

The new bridge officially opens with eight lanes on Saturday Dec. 1 and half-price tolls of $1.50 for regular cars will kick in a week later on Dec. 8. The transportation ministry estimates the new bridge will cut commute times 50 per cent and save some drivers an hour a day. But the full 10 lanes on the bridge and on the widened Highway 1 through Vancouver and Burnaby won't be open until late in 2013 because construction is continuing on much of the corridor. And some critics say even when the full project is complete, traffic heading to those cities will hit heavy volume at the off-ramps, backing traffic up onto the freeway. "My prediction is congestion," Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said. "The pinch point will just be moved." He said Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver are all refusing to free up more road capacity in response by eliminating parking lanes, for example. "The highway is the access point and if that's where people end up having to sit, that's where they have to sit." But Port Mann/Highway 1 project spokesman Max Logan said much of the westbound bridge traffic exits at Cape Horn or Brunette Avenue. "We're not expecting anything significant in terms of a pinch point or traffic bottleneck," he said, adding drivers should see similar conditions they now see west of Brunette, until the entire $3.3-billion project is finished in late 2013. It's a different story east of the bridge. By Dec. 1, there will be four lanes open in each direction running from Logan said some drivers may have been avoiding the Port Mann and Highway 1 because of construction delays and will now come back to it. "We expect the Port Mann will be the crossing of choice because it's going to be just so much faster and more efficient than it is now." Crews have been phasing in use of the new span in stages. Eastbound traffic has already been going over the new bridge since September and westbound traffic will switch over to two lanes on the new bridge on Nov. 17. The final lanes to be opened on the new bridge in late 2013 will be for local traffic only. They'll allow drivers heading between Surrey and Coquitlam to travel on separate lanes without having to merge with the rest of the freeway traffic to cross the bridge. Another change will see TransLink launch the Highway 1 RapidBus service over the Port Mann on Dec. 1. It will run between the Carvolth parkand-ride in northwest Langley and Braid Street SkyTrain station in New Westminster every 10 minutes at peak times and every 30 off peak. But Bains said he's concerned passengers will be stranded in Langley because TransLink's planned service level may not meet demand. With six buses an hour leaving Carvolth, he said, there will only be capacity for 350 passengers an hour at peak periods and less at off-peak times. "We're trying to work within our means," TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said. "For now, this is what we are able to provide."

Brunette over the bridge as far east as 200 Street in Langley a doubling of highway capacity through Surrey. One of the four lanes each way will be for HOV users, adding 20 kilometres where car pools and other vehicles with at least two occupants can bypass congestion. Registered HOV lane users also get a 25 per cent discount at peak times. Drivers who don't want to pay a toll will be directed over the Pattullo Bridge, via the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which partly opens Dec. 1. NDP transportation critic Harry Bains predicts heavy congestion at that crossing and in feeder routes in Surrey

and New Westminster as a result. "That is going to be a huge concern," Bains said. "The Pattullo is dangerous and over capacity." TransLink has also warned seismic and other safety risks could force the Pattullo to shut down before its 2020 target date for replacement. Logan said he expects some drivers will shift to the Pattullo at least initially. "Come Dec. 8, once tolling begins, we may see some drivers gravitate to the untolled alternative," he said. "We're expecting drivers are going to test out the alternatives that are available to them and make the choice of the one that makes most sense to them."

The Canada Revenue Agency says it has revoked the charitable status of three organizations for alleged violations, including overstated revenue and using donations for private gain. The Animals' Charity, the Latitude Foundation and Universal Community Help will no longer be able to take advantage of tax exemptions for charities or issue charitable tax receipts to donors. The Animals' Charity, based in Hamilton, Ont., was cited for issuing more than $9 million in questionable donation receipts, and for operating in conjunction with a private "donation arrangement promoter" for noncharitable purposes, CRA says. CRA accuses the Markham, Ont.-based Latitude Foundation of issuing receipts

totalling more than $15.4 million for cash it received which it then used to buy life insurance policies that named people related to the organization's directors as beneficiaries. Universal Community Help, based in Toronto, failed to keep proper books, CRA says, with the result that bank deposits for one particular fiscal year didn't match the declared revenue and three years' worth of donation receipts totalling $347,435 weren't recorded. CRA says it is reviewing all "tax shelter-related" donation arrangements and plans to audit all parties involved in them. The agency says one such arrangement would be the promise of a charitable tax receipt worth more than the amount of the donation.

Growth Disorders
Children that fail to thrive seem to be much smaller or shorter than other children the same age. Teenagers may not appear to have the usual changes that occur at puberty. How A Doctor Prevents Colds And Flu

Keep your immune system in top shape and protect yourself against colds and flu with these tips

Reduce your risk of getting sick

2. Take a probiotic every day

I must start by confessing something: Im a doctor who gets stressed about germs. If youd ever had a patient with the flu cough in your face, felt their saliva land in your eye and then ended up in bed for a week, youd be a little paranoid, too. (Not only that, most doctors dont get sick pay.) After more than 10 years of medical practice and being exposed to everything from the swine flu to tuberculosis, I rely on multiple strategies to minimize the probability that Ill get sick. Maximum protection comes from a combination of limiting your exposure to viruses and fortifying your immune system. Here are my top six tips that can help you, too: 1. Wash your hands and keep them away from your face

On the first day of residency training, we each got a handbook on how to survive it. The one piece of advice I remember was that we were to wash our hands frequently and avoid touching our mouths, noses and eyes; these vulnerable surfaces are where most germ transmission happens. Washing with plain soap is bestpersonally, Im not a fan of antibacterial hand washes because they strip protective bacteria from your hands and may even irritate your skin.

5. Limit sugar

Journal of Medicine took two groups of overweight and obese, sedentary, post-menopausal women and had one group exercise moderately for 45 minutes a day, five days a week, for a year; the other group didnt exercise. By the last three months of the study, the women who didnt exercise were found to have had three times as many colds as those who were active. No matter what your age or weight, exercise pays off.

Eating sugary or refined flour-based foods produces bursts of high blood sugar in your body, and that impairs your immune system. Eat fibre-rich whole foods and limit high-sugar snacks and drinks to keep your defences strong.

6. Dont smoke

4. Get a flu shot

I have taken probiotics daily for years. In addition to improving digestion and intestinal health, they boost your immunity and can protect you from colds and flu. A 2009 study published in the journal Pediatrics reported that children who took a probiotic daily for six months decreased their incidence of viral infections, shortened the duration of infections they got and decreased the need for antibiotic prescriptions. Ask your pharmacist or family doctor for a recommendation if you arent sure which one is right for you. And follow the recommended dosage on the label.

3. Exercise regularly

Even if you have never exercised in your life, theres still hope: A study published in 2006 in the American

Theres so much debate over the safety of the flu shot, but I really think its a wise choice for anyone who has contact with a lot of people. The year I got taken down by the eyeful of fluladen saliva was the first year since med school that I had delayed getting my shot. Ive never missed one since.

The title of a study published in a 2005 issue of the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine makes this point elegantly: Respiratory tract infections: Another reason not to smoke. Smoking depresses your immune system, makes the tissues in your mouth and lungs more vulnerable to infection, and is associated with more sick days lost from work. Its obvious advice, but its worth repeating nonetheless: Talk to your doctor for advice on how to quit.

Vidya Balan Confirms Marriage

Anita Advani Claims Rs 50 Crore As Damage From Khanna's Family

With Rajesh Khannas demise came into the forefront the personal bits of his life which was hidden from his fans for long. Everybody knew that his wife was actress Dimple Kapadia, but what none knew was that he had a livein partner named Anita Advani. Light was shed on it by her, only after Kakas (the superstar, lovingly is known by this name) death due to cancer. Anita Advani is the only person who has been claiming this. She said that she had been Rajesh Khannas livein partner for nine long years. This Wednesday she moved court, causing trouble to the Khanna family. She has been apparently asserting that she had been meted with domestic violence carried out on the part of Kakas wife Dimple Kapadia, his two daughters Twinkle and Rinki, and also Twinkles husband actor Akshay Kumar. Anitas identity had been until now entirely kept under cover. Her claiming rights over Rajesh Khanna and his house overnight have caused enough embarrassment and turmoil to the Khanna family. She filed a petition at a metropolitan court in the city of Mumbai. Anita claims that she had been forced to leave Kakas bungalow Aashirwaad where the duo lived and that this forceful throwing out falls under Domestic Violence Act. Manohar Shetty who has been appointed lawyer by Anita says My client has demanded Rs 10 lakh maintenance per month, Rs 10 lakh for causing mental agony and physical assault and the possession of Aashirwaad. If the court cannot give the house, then she wants Rs 50 crore as damage or a premise of the same level in the same area. The notice has already been served to Khannas family and the hearing of the case is on November 27. Khannas family has not commented on this issue as of yet, but Anita said I cant talk much about it because the matter is sub-judicial. I am not even in a mental state to say anything. I am just getting along, though life has been difficult. When questioned why she took four months to move court after Kakas death, she said I was picking up pieces of my life. I was not well, I was depressed and devastated. When asked if she has been able to forgive Rajesh Khanna for barring her out of his life at the last moment, she said I dont know if he shunned me or was made to shun me. He may have been manipulated.

Many rumors of impending wedding of Bollywood actress with UTV head honcho Siddharth Roy Kapur has been doing the rounds for quite sometime. It was also said that Vidya and Siddharth are planning to tie the knot in December and the wedding preparation is on. But the actress bluntly denied tying the knot so soon but at the same time did not dismiss marriage. I will say this that one is not denyingI definitely want to be married someday, but so far I dont know when. When I get married, all of you and the world will know for sure. This is something I would want to share with everyone, Vidya said. This year in May Vidya Balan confirmed her relationship status

though she did not name her boyfriend. Vidya and Siddhaths love blossomed on the set of No One Killed Jessica and since then they are going strong. Siddharths divorced case has been settled and it is expected that wedding bells might ring anytime. Vidya Balan has been tightlipped about her affair with Siddharth for a long time. Finally, she broke her silence and spoke about her man indirectly. Siddharth has purchased a sea-facing bungalow in Mumbai worth Rs crores and Vidya has decorated the bungalow. After wedding they will shift to the bungalow. The duo also headed for vacations couple of times. Vidya will next be seen in comedy movie, Ghanchakkar.

effortless ease. Also, it was a director's film in many ways. Such subjects always present a lot of challenges and had the filmmaker slipped even a little, it could have become a very boring film instead of an entertaining one! That's where Basu's superb treatment of the story stood out." Asked about his personal favorites when it comes to his own films, the actor says, "There are certain films that I am really proud of, like Shukriya, Ankahee, Kasoor and Aao Wish Karein. I know that some of these didn't do well at the box-office, but I am very proud of these films."

Sometimes, life does give you second chances. US President Barack Obamas re-election for another term is a great example. In Bollywood too, it takes more than once-a-star status to make a comeback and sustain it. Senior film journalist Rauf Ahmed says, Actors need to realise that in the time that theyve not been around, the audience has changed. They cant start from where they left off. When Amitabh (Bachchan) made his comeback, he couldnt have returned as the angry young man. The kind of role that the actor makes a comeback with, then, becomes important. He says, Madhuri (Dixit) made a mistake with her comeback. But Sridevi was smart in choosing a film where she could play her age. Heres looking at the five actors whove played the game well. Also, ad-man Pralhad Kakkar tells us what it will take for each actor to sustain their position in the industry.

Her allegation has enraged Latas fans as well as filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi who is a very good friend of Bhupen Hazarika. Priyamvada held Latas equation as one of the reasons for separating from her husband 13 years after marriage. She said that whenever Lata comes to Kolkata, she used to visit their residence in the city. She used to come and they used to be together the whole night in one of the three bedrooms. She was crazy about him. He told me one day, Look Priyam, in India, if a musician wants to come up, his songs have to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Priyamvada has been quoted saying. Later, when I asked him why he should be with a woman in the room the whole night, he said ketiaba koribo lage (sometimes you have to do it). Once, musicians Kalyanji-Anandji were in one of the rooms. Kalyanji told me in Gujarati, Behen, tame sui jao (sister you go to sleep), he wont come up, Patel reportedly said. Priyamvada Patel went to say that many people in Assam knew about Bhupen Hazarikas illegal relationship with Lata but no one dare to speak about it. She added that Hazarika indirectly mentioned Lata Mangeshkars name in his autobiography Moi Eti Jajabor (I am a Nomad). But he hadnt mentioned Latas name. Priyamvada described an incident which left her in teary eyed and that was when she said, She (the big star from Bombay) said she loves you (Hazarika) more than your parents and I do.

Be A Smart Saver
Everyone believes that cost-cutting in their daily lives is a tough job and can never be fun. But if you're a working parent, it's essential to save money to ensure a stable and secured future.
While it's great to invest in policies and schemes, we share some simple money-saving tips that you can follow in your day-to-day life, without feeling the pinch. Travel wise: With fuel prices having sky-rocketed, if you're travelling alone, it's advisable to take public transport, like the bus or train. This way, you will also get time to read a book or listen to your favourite music. If that's not an option, you can always carpool to work with colleagues who live nearby. Get you own lunch: Instead of spending money on lunch every day at work, pack a lunch box from home. Not only is it a healthier option, but you will save more money than you can imagine. Another great option is potluck with your colleagues - not only will it build your rapport with your team members, you'll also get to sample a variety of cuisines! Indulge in outdoor entertainment: You've probably not realised, but a large part of your income often goes in paying astronomical cable and satellite bills. That's because more and more families today, spend all their free time being glued to the idiot box. Instead, go outdoors for entertainment. Parks, public libraries and museums, are a great source of education. If you have a club membership, make use of it, by taking the kids swimming. The options are endless.

Best practices for planning and budgeting

Credit Card Usage Tips

Credit cards are often misused, and as a result of this misuse less than savvy financial planners end up in more trouble with credit cards than they had ever anticipated. By following these top 10 tips, you will end up in less trouble and you will ultimately save money. The fundamental thing to remember is that credit cards are only a short term solution, and should never be used to provide finance in the long term. Many people forget to apply this rule, and ultimately end up in trouble as a result. 1. Consider how you are going to use your credit card. Do you intend to clear your balance at the end of the month, or will you not be able to finance this for two months? 2. Calculate the total amount of expenses you are likely to incur over the course of a year, by applying formula within a providers proposal, to your likely repayment and borrowing requirements. Now work out what is the cheapest. 3. Consider working with a larger company that is regulated by the appropriate bodies and for the safest option, work with a company that is a listed company or one that is owned by a listed company. 4. Protect your account details at all cost, and ensure that you are careful about the companies that you contract with. If in doubt, pay with cash or go elsewhere. 5. Shopping online? Look for companies that use a third-party payment provider like "Pay Pal" or "World Pay". Also always ensure that when you complete a payment, that the address bar reads https:// rather than http://. This means that the data is encrypted. 6. Only carry the credit cards with you that you intend to use. If you carry too many then you are just asking for trouble, because it will take you longer to notice when they go missing. 7. Hold onto any receipts and keep a note of all credit card transactions that you have been party to. If you are ever in doubt about a transaction contact your credit card provider immediately. 8. Always check your statements in detail, and try and do this as often as possible. The longer you wait, the less likely you will be to remember transactions, and the less time you will have to do something about it. 9. Never use your credit card as a way of financing purchases that you are not certain you will be able to afford in the near future. If you have a job for example that is ending in 2 months, then ensure that your credit card balance will be zero for that time. This will eliminate the risk of you not being able to keep up repayments, should your contract not be renewed or you not being able to get a new job. 10. Remember that you can always churn. Always keep abreast with pricing in the market, and don't be scared to move provider to attain better prices, this can often be the best way to ensure that you save the most money.

Popular tourist attractions include Museum of Wellington City & Sea Wellington Zoo and Zealandia (Karori Wildlife Sanctuary). Arts and culture Museums and cultural institutions Te Papa ("Our Place"), the Museum of New Zealand. Wellington is home to Te Papa (the Museum of New Zealand), the National Library of New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, the Museum of Wellington City & Sea, the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace Museum, Colonial Cottage, the New Zealand Cricket Museum, the Cable Car Museum, Old St Paul's, and the Wellington City Art Gallery. The annual children's Artsplash Festival brings together hundreds of students from across the Wellington region. The week-long festival includes music and dance performances and the presentation of visual arts. Film Filmmakers Sir Peter Jackson, Sir Richard Taylor and a growing team of creative professionals have turned the eastern suburb of Miramar into a filmmaking, post-production and special effects infrastructure, giving rise to the moniker 'Wellywood'. Jackson's companies include Weta Workshop, Weta Digital, Camperdown Studios, post-production house Park Road Post, and Stone Street Studios near Wellington Airport. Recent films shot partly or wholly in Wellington include the Lord of The Rings trilogy, King Kong and Avatar. Jackson described Wellington in this way: "Well, it's windy. But it's actually a lovely place, where you're pretty much surrounded by water and the bay. The city itself is quite small, but the surrounding areas are very reminiscent of the hills up in northern California, like Marin County near San Francisco and the Bay Area climate and some of the architecture. Kind of a cross between that and Hawaii." Sometime Wellington directors Jane Campion and Geoff Murphy have reached the world's screens with their independent spirit. Emerging Kiwi film-makers, like Robert Sarkies, Taika Waititi, Costa Botes and Jennifer Bush-Daumec are extending the Wellington-based lineage and cinematic scope. There are agencies to assist film-makers with such tasks as securing permits and scouting locations.[60] Wellington has a large number of independent cinemas, including The Embassy, Paramount, The Empire, Penthouse, the Roxy and Light House, which participate in film festivals throughout the year. Wellington also has one of the country's highest turnouts for the annual New Zealand International Film Festival. Cuisine Wellington's caf culture is prominent. The city has more cafes per capita than New York City. Restaurants are either licensed to sell alcohol, BYO (bring your own), or unlicensed (no alcohol); many let you bring your own wine. Restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, including from Europe, Asia and Polynesia. "For dishes that have a distinctly New Zealand style, there are lamb, pork and cervena (venison), salmon, crayfish (lobster), Bluff oysters, pua (abalone), mussels, scallops, pipis and tuatua (both New Zealand shellfish); kumara (sweet potato); kiwifruit and tamarillo; and pavlova, the national dessert," recommends one tourism website. 2013 Kia Sportage - Review

road surfaces as, say, a Subaru Forester. Ride quality's improved a bit this year with more sophisticated shocks on base versions, like those standard on EX and SX versions. Big 18-inch wheels don't help, so think twice before blinging out. Kia tunes its electric power steering systems on the heavy side, which gives them a little more realistic feel than its Hyundai cousins, and better control over minor road modulations. The SX makes great strides toward a truly sporty driving experience, something a little bit more tuning could bring home. With its wider footprint, the Sportage delivers more interior space than its ancestors, but it's still on the smaller side of crossovers. The front seats benefit from the relatively high dash, and have good leg and shoulder room. As usual, add a sunroof, subtract headroom. The seats themselves are well-shaped and can be air-cooled on high-line Sportages. The back seat's like that in the Tucson--bigger adults will slouch a bit to find a good seating position perched on the otherwise nicely angled cushions. Cargo space measures 26.1 cubic feet, more than some luxury utes, and the rear-end styling means more of the cargo space is hidden behind sheetmetal--great for valuables, not so great if you carry pets often. Standard curtain airbags and stability control are joined by optional rear parking sensors and rearview camera,

which help with the Sportage's sizable blind spots. The IIHS calls the Sportage a Top Safety Pick, too. Standard features include air conditioning; power windows, locks and mirrors; and 16-inch wheels. Moving up to more expensive models adds features like keyless start; satellite radio; Bluetooth; steering-wheel audio and phone controls; and a USB port. Top models get a telescoping steering wheel; a cooled glove box; a power driver seat; 18-inch wheels; leather steering wheel and shifter trim; roof rails; and a rear spoiler. Major options include leather upholstery; seat heaters; a cooled driver seat; and finally UVO, Kia's version of the Microsoft voice controller sold by Ford as SYNC. Kia's version has a more limited vocabulary and controls fewer functions, but it can search all your media to find the perfect soundtrack to your next drive, whether it lives on your iPod, an SD card, or HD Radio. Likes: Sport-shoe styling A higher grade of trim, all around UVOs hands-free controls Genuine sporty driving in 260-hp SX Dislikes: Still rides a little stiffly Steering is heavier than most cute-utes Smallish cabin has skimpy rear-seat headroom Easy to build a $30,000 SX

chunky, laid-back look owes a lot to the European hot hatches--no surprise since Kia's chief designer is Peter Schreyer--but the high stance and slightly snubbed nose are pure ute, as is the rectangular, function-driven interior. Substance gets a workout all over the Sportage's sheetmetal and cabin, but there's an equal dash of style that's distinctive to Kia. Four-cylinder engines are all that's offered on the Sportage in this generation, and they're all that's needed, since one gets a turbocharged horsepower lift. The base engine's a 2.4-liter four with 176 horsepower and direct injection. A six-speed automatic isn't the only gearbox, but its measured, responsive shifts are likely the only ones you'll find on dealer lots: we've yet to see one of the manuals. Opt for the turbocharged SX and the Sportage's output rises to a breathy 260 hp, enough to spin the front wheels a little before traction control mellows out the party, and the automatic gets shift paddles for less distracted driving and better response. All-wheel drive is an option across the board, and comes with a differential lock that splits power 50:50 at speeds up to 25 mph. In either trim, the base four-cylinder Sportage isn't quite as savvy at muting

Trucky SUVs are the work boots of some worlds--useful if you're a logger, a swamp person, or anyone else with a personal stake in assisted-reality television. Crossovers? They're the cosplay version, look-somewhatalikes that let you wear the sport-ute style without enduring live axles and locking differentials and...dirt. The Kia Sportage slips easily into the latter group, like a size 7 foot into a Nike cross-trainer. It packs convenience and features into a body that's as much a hatchback as it is a trim little utility vehicle, and offers all-wheel drive for the few who really need it--and the significantly higher number of people who'll pay for it when they really don't. Bigger than in its first run around the neighborhood, the second-generation Sportage is still on the compact end of its class, and relatively unchanged for the 2013 model year, while it takes on other incumbents like the Chevy Equinox and Hyundai Tucson, as well as newer entries like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. Spanning a price bracket from about $20,000 to more than $35,000, the Sportage crosses swords with those larger vehicles, but it does so with presence that's equally tough. The

Best Beauty Products Made With Food

The latest beauty products are bursting with the benefits of healthy foods.

Corn

In beauty, coconut oil has a tradition as a natural nourisher. Its vitamin E and fatty acid content make it a superb moisturizer, and it adds shine to hair. Yves Rochers Polynesian-inspired Mono oil, derived from steeping flowers in coconut oil, can be used as a massage oil or hair conditioner. Or add a capful to your bath. And coconut smells delicious in the shampoo and conditioner.

Blueberries have one of the highest antioxidant contents of any fruit or vegetable, and many of us are getting into the habit of sprinkling them on our cereal or snacking on them. In skin care, their vitamin C and anthocyanins help to fight the formation of free radicals. And its not just earthy companies that are big on blueberries: Physician-developed Skinceuticals uses four-percent extract in this face cream. Blueberry juice and pulp in its night cream tightens and tones skin.

A tropical fruit trend is perking up our beauty aisles. Think enzymes: Papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple help exfoliate skin and keep it fresher and brighter looking. The Importance Of Puppy Training

Owning a puppy can be both rewarding and stressful. The puppy is cute, furry and fluffy but he's chewing on your shoes, furniture and clothes. It's an ongoing problem and you have no idea what to do. If you have a puppy, be prepared to spend a good deal of time housetraining him and establishing basic obedience. Socialization is also good for your puppy. You should always supervise your puppy with strangers and other dogs at all times. Puppy training is important because it is easier to set the foundation for good behaviour at a young age. It also avoids handler and dog problems in the future. Puppy training can begin when the puppy is eight weeks old. The first six months of a puppy's life are very important. Without training many puppies develop bad habits such as barking endlessly, chewing on shoes and furniture, and defecating in the house. Here are some tips to help you train your little furry friend: - Training should last about 10-15 minutes as puppies have a low attention span and they will tire out very easily. - Take puppies outside after eating, exercise, and when they wake up (this is when they will need to go to the toilet). - Give rewards - treat, praise and consistency are important - Never teach your puppy to jump or hit hard things (eg stones, metal, sticks) - Use a firm tone of voice when giving commands. - Never hit the puppy with heavy objects (hand, stick, newspaper etc) - Do not leave your puppy in a room unsupervised. - Do not encourage tug games - these can lead to dominance issues and the puppy may become aggressive and develop a quick temper. - Do not give your puppy tennis balls to play with - as they can erode the puppy's teeth enamel. - Don't forget to have fun.

Chelsea Held
LONDON - John Terry scored a goal on his comeback but went off injured as Chelsea drew 1-1 with Liverpool yesterday, allowing Manchester City to go second in the Premier League by beating Tottenham Hotspur. Terry was making his return after a four-game domestic ban for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand last season, and he broke the deadlock against Liverpool with a 20th-minute header. However, 19 minutes later he left the fray on a stretcher, his head in his hands, following a collision with Luis Suarez, who added insult to injury by scoring the visitors' equaliser with 17 minutes to play. "We'll have to have an MRI scan on John Terry to fully understand the extent of the injury," said Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo. "I thought we pushed on and had the chances to score the second goal, but their keeper made good saves and we missed chances. "It's a shame and a disappointment that we didn't score the second goal." The result left the European champions

three points behind leaders Manchester United and one point below City, who came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Spurs thanks to an 88th-minute winner from substitute Edin Dzeko. At Stamford Bridge, Terry glanced home Juan Mata's corner to break the deadlock and claim his 50th goal in Chelsea's colours, but the former England defender did not make it to half-time. His right knee buckled after Suarez fell on top of him, prompting an anguished cry that was picked up by television microphones and necessitating five minutes of treatment before he was carried off by medics. Chelsea came close to extending their lead on several occasions, most notably when Mata fired over late in the firsthalf and when Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones blocked Fernando Torres' second-half header. Suarez had been having a quiet game but in the 73rd minute he popped up to claim the equaliser, nodding in from close range after Jamie Carragher flicked on Suso's corner to record his eighth league goal of the campaign.

Celtic Loses Top Spot

GLASGOW - Celtic have been knocked off the top of the Scottish Premier League after St Johnstone came from behind to claim a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Parkhead. Just four days after beating Barcelona in a historic Champions League match at the same venue, Neil Lennon's side showed all the signs of a European hangover as they failed to find a win in the league for the third match running. Ten of the Celtic side that had put in a heroic shift in midweek started the match against the Perth side but their play lacked the intensity shown to defeat the Catalan giants in what was a lacklustre first-half. Super-sub Tony Watt, who scored the crucial second against Barca, was introduced at half-time and again had an instant impact when he opened the scoring in the 51st minute as he bundled Charlie Mulgrew's lofted pass past Alan Mannus. However, the Hoops failed to build on their advantage and after seeing a fierce strike superbly saved by Fraser Forster, Dutch forward Nigel Hasselbaink fired St Johnstone level in the 77th minute with a low drive on the turn. The result leaves the Hoops trailing Hibernian, who won 2-1 against Dundee United in yesterday's early kick-off match, by two points at the top of the table having played a game less than the Easter Road side.
