Sony started with sound

For the moment, forget about BRAVIA televisions, Handycam cameras and PlayStation consoles. Before any of that, Sony was an audio company. Weve been breaking sound barriers for 60 years. And weve been advancing audio technology all the way from the recording studio to your ears.
1979 Worlds first mobile PWM amp. The PWM switching power supply was far more efficient than conventional amps, as Sony demonstrated with the XM-1. 1950 Japans first audio tape recorder. The Type G changed recorded history. 1982 Worlds first mobile diversity reception tuner. Two FM antennas can do what one cannot minimize multipath distortion. Sony proved it with the XR-100.
1984 Worlds first mobile CD player. It only stands to reason that the company that co-invented the Compact Disc was first to bring the wonders of digital audio into the car, with the CDX-5 CD player and CDX-R7 CD/tuner.
1986 Worlds first Mobile A/V system. This included the XTV-5 and XTV-8 monitors, the EVX-S8 8mm video deck and the XVM-9 TV tuner with diversity reception.

1986 Worlds first CD changer. Before it came into homes, the CD changer actually appeared in cars first with the CDX-J10 DiscJockey 10-disc changer.
1991 Worlds first Mobile digital preamplifier. Part of the legendary Mobile ES system, the XES-P1 included digital volume, balance, fader, parametric equalization and sound fields.

Playlists are nice for organizing your music, but playlists quickly grow old. Shuffle play is fine, for what it is, but its completely random and unrelated to your mood. Thats why Sony invented SensMe technology. Like a music concierge, the SensMe features arrange your music files by mood and serve them up accordingly. The technology is impressive. Content Transfer Software

SensMe technology begins on your Windows PC, with Sonys SensMe Setup and Content Transfer apps. The apps analyze your songs based on the 12 tones of the musical octave. In this way, the system can identify the song, album, and artist, retrieve the album cover art from the Internet and classify each song according to its tempo and musical content.
12-tone Analysis
The SensMe 12-tone analysis looks at seemingly simple parameters such as tempo (beats per minute), rhythm ratio and number of notes. But it can also identify more high-level features like three-chord songs, acoustic versus electric instruments, bright versus dark and happy versus sad. A level of timeline analysis identifies beat positions, bar lines and music structure. The system saves this information as metadata tags in the music files. This metadata accompanies the music onto compatible digital music players and USB drives. Not compatible with iPod or iPhone players.

In your car, SensMe channels make finding the right music as easy as picking a radio station. When you connect your compatible digital music player or USB drive to the head unit, youre ready to take advantage. Choose from any of 17 SensMe Channels, organized by mood (such as Energetic, Relax) time of day (Morning, Midnight) and driving occasion (Party Ride, Weekend Trip). The system can handle up to 500 tracks per channel. As an added bonus, Sony AV Receivers will even display the album cover art as each song plays.

Center Speaker Organizer

Now you dont need a center channel speaker to enjoy proper playback of 5.1-channel DVD sound tracks. Sonys Center Speaker Organizer (CSO) performs downmixing. The circuit decodes the Center channel and mixes it into the Left-Front and Right-Front, creating a virtual Center speaker of high performance.

Automatic Level Optimizer

When do you use the Volume control and why? Chances are you reach for the Volume when you switch sources, for example, between the radio and a digital music player. Thats when a sudden blast of sound can surprise you, distract you and get you reaching. Sony has a better way. Automatic Level Optimizer is a valueadded feature of Sonys exclusive Advanced Sound Engine. The system analyzes the audio level of each source you select and each digital file you play. And it automatically adjusts the level to prevent sonic surprises. For the driver, this means less need to fumble for the volume control. For everyone else, it means a smoother, more enjoyable audio experience.
Dynamic Loudness
When music playback is soft, the sound gets unnaturally thin. Thats because human hearing is far less sensitive to deep bass and extreme highs when the volume is low. The Loudness circuit was invented to correct this equalization imbalance. Loudness boosts the frequency extremes whenever the Volume control is turned down. Unfortunately, conventional Loudness cant take the program dynamics into account. But Sonys Dynamic Loudness can. It considers both the Volume setting and the dynamics of the content. You get powerful, natural sound at all settings of the volume control.

Listening Position
At home, youre free to sit where youll hear the best sound. In the car, youre not free at all. For example, the driver has no choice but to sit way too close to the front-left speaker. Sony compensates with the digital delay system we call Listening Position. By selectively delaying the channels, Sony aligns the arrival time for ideal sound. Independent settings for subwoofer and full-range speakers put you in complete control.
Rear Bass Enhancer

If your system doesnt include subwoofers, Sony has the next best thing. The Rear Bass Enhancer will direct the bass to the rear speakers only, then give that bass an extra boost, to deliver sound with authority.

Built-in HPF/LPF Crossover
Full-range speakers may be okay for factory radio systems, but they have major limitations. For one, full-range speakers cant produce really low bass the way subwoofers can. And as the amplifier tries to push bass through full-range speakers, the treble distorts. Thats why advanced audio systems use multiple, specialized speakers, including subwoofers, mids and tweeters. And thats why Sony receivers have built-in active crossovers. The high-pass filter (HPF) strips out the bass and sends the audio signal to the internal amplifier or to the RCA outputs if you're using an external amp. The low pass filter (LPF) sends just the low bass to a subwoofer amp.
Adjustable crossover Slope

Sonys Advanced Sound Engine takes the concept even further with a crossover thats not only active, but digital as well. For maximum impact, you want separate amplifiers for your subwoofers and full-range speakers. For maximum sound quality, the sophisticated Digital Sound Processing (DSP) built into the Advanced Sound Engine circuit provides you with a choice of mild, moderate or aggressive crossover slopes (6, 12, or 18 dB per octave). You can precisely divide the frequency range with the digital high-pass filter (HPF) and low-pass filter (LPF) with selectable frequencies at 50, 60, 80, 100 or 120 Hz and set the adjustable crossover slope to perfectly match the needs of your speakers. Theres even a selectable subwoofer phase mode to optimize your subwoofers presence. Selectable crossover slopes are available on select 2012 models (CDX-GT-40U, CDXGT56UI, CDX-GT565UP, CDX-GT660UP, DSX-S210X, DSX-S310BTX, MEX-BT4000P and MEX-DV-1700U).
EQ3 Equalization
In the old days, your only way to adjust tone quality was the bass and treble knobs. Sony equalization goes light years beyond, with discrete bands of equalization. The result is far more sensitive, supple control. Parametric models even let you select the frequency bands, for even greater sound control. EQ3 Stage 2 Three frequency bands (60, 1,000 and 10,000 Hz) with 10 dB adjustment. In the beginning, you could only control the frequency balance of your music with simple bass and treble adjustments. Threeband equalizers were a big step forward, adding control over midrange frequencies. Sony has gone even further with EQ7 and EQ7 Parametric. EQ7 provides 7 independent bands of adjustment while EQ7 Parametric provides 7 selectable bands of equalization. Ask any audiophile or mobile audio expert. You'll hear that "bridging" a pair of amplifier channels results in a single channel of roughly twice the power. Many of today's best systems take advantage of this high power technology. That's why all Sony multi-channel amps can be bridged for maximum flexibility.
Sony 2/1-Channel Amps

Our 2-channel amps can drive a stereo pair of speakers or be bridged to deliver a single channel of roughly twice the power. It's a good choice for driving a subwoofer.
Sony 4/3-Channel Amps

All our 4-channel amps can drive four full-range speakers. Or you can bridge to drive two full-range speakers and a subwoofer.
High Level Inputs

The best way to connect an amplifier is called "line level" or "preamp output." This uses audio cables with the familiar white and red RCA jacks. But what if you're using a factory radio that doesn't have preamp outputs? Sony amplifiers come to the rescue with high-level inputs. Simply connect the speaker outputs of your receiver to the high-level inputs of the amplifier. Auto sensing will even switch the amplifier on automatically whenever the head unit is on.
Internal Crossover
To get the full benefit of your speakers, youll need to send them the appropriate musical frequencies. Thats why our amplifiers offer internal crossovers. A crossover consists of two filters: the High Pass Filter (HPF) sends everything but the deepest bass to full-range speakers while the Low Pass Filter (LPF) sends only the deep bass to the subwoofers. Filter adjustments enable you to set the frequency at which the music "crosses over" from full-range speakers to subwoofer. A separate bass boost adjustment enables you to optimize the bass for your specific choice of subwoofer.
Sony 4/3/2-Channel amps

Sony takes channel bridging one step further with 4-channel amps that enable both pairs to be bridged. The result is a 2-channel amp of extraordinary power.
Sony Class D Mono Amps

These subwoofer specialists are the only Sony Mobile amps that can't be bridged, because they only have 1-channel.

To sub or not to sub

One of the glories of custom mobile audio is a big amplifier driving a subwoofer. Freed from the responsibility of reproducing midrange and treble sound the sub generates nothing but deep bass. The results can be spectacular, pumping out lows with a volume and realism that rivals the live concert experience. As in home theater systems, a single subwoofer can perform well because deep bass is not directional. The human auditory system can't tell where the bass is coming from.
Class D Amplification
"Powerful" doesn't have to mean big, heavy or hot. Conventional Class AB amplifiers only manage to convert 50 to 60% of incoming power into output to the speakers. The rest gets dissipated as heat. At 90%, Sony's Class D amplification is far more efficient than traditional Class AB amplifiers. As a result, the XM-GS100, XM-1S and XM-ZZR3301 deliver incredible power without filling up or heating up your trunk. These Class D amps are designed or subwoofer use only.

Dynamic Distortion Suppressor

When conventional amps are driven too hard, they clip off the signal peaks, sending masses of distortion to the speakers. The Dynamic Distortion Suppressor of Sony's XM-GS100 and XM-ZZR3301 reduces peaks without clipping them harshly. So distortion is substantially reduced.
Active Thermal Control

When the going gets hot, conventional thermal control simply shuts your amp down until it's cool. Sony's XM-GS100 and XM-ZZR3301 have a better way. Active Thermal Control automatically lowers the output until it's safe to return to normal operation.

Subwoofer Configurations
Sony single and dual-voice coil subwoofers enable you to configure systems of awesome power. For example, bridging a stereo amplifier to drive a single subwoofer results in nearly twice the power. In addition, wiring a pair of 4-ohm subwoofers in parallel results in a 2-ohm load, into which Sony Class-D amplifiers will also deliver roughly twice the power. With Sony amps and subwoofers, the power is yours.

Just as you can get sunburned, the finishes on your equipment can fade, crack and peel after prolonged exposure to sunlight. And just as with sunburn, ultraviolet (UV ) light is the biggest culprit. Anti-corrosion coated circuit boards

Binding Post. A high-quality, highly-secure terminal for speaker wires that enables you to insert the wire through the post, then screw it down tight. Bridging. A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). Industry standard that enables Sony Bluetooth head units to play music from compatible Bluetooth digital music players. AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). A codec used for distributing music files over the internet and playing them on digital music players. Active Crossover. A crossover that operates on line-level signals, employs active circuit components such as transistors and requires DC power. Active Thermal Control. Instead of simply shutting the amplifier down to protect from excessive heat, this Sony feature lowers the output level temporarily. Advanced Lane Guidance.13 TomTom navigation feature that provides extra clarity when you navigate difficult intersections or highway exits. Clear 3D images show the route through complex intersections. Advanced Sound Engine. Sony Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip that delivers sophisticated audio features, including EQ7, Digital Active Crossover, Listening Position, Dynamic Loudness and Rear Bass Enhancer. Amplifier. Also called "power amplifier," the part of an audio system that boosts the signal from line level, providing the power needed to drive speakers. CEA 2006. Industry standard for power amplifier output specifications. The standard makes it possible to compare amps from different manufacturers on an even playing field. CEA-2031. defines test procedures for rating the performance and physical size of mobile loudspeakers, and requirements for reporting these characteristics. CEA-2031, when used in conjunction with CEA-2006-A, Testing & Measurement Methods for Mobile Audio Amplifiers, enables consumers to select mobile loudspeakers with power handling capabilities that are appropriate for the power output characteristics of their mobile amplifiers. Class AB. Amplifier circuit that uses paired positive-half and negative-half transistors to create the audio waveform. AAC, ATRAC, MP3 and WMA are examples of audio codecs. Compression. A system of encoding a digital signal for reduced bitrates, especially useful for Internet distribution and low-cost portable storage. AAC, ATRAC, MP3 and WMA are all examples of audio compression. DVD uses MPEG-2 video compression. Cone. A speaker diaphragm shape typically used for woofers and midrange drivers. Conformal Coated. A system of protecting electronic circuitry from salt spray. The circuit is effectively sealed off from air-borne salt. Crossover. A circuit that divides full-bandwidth audio, for example, directing just the high frequencies to the tweeter, the mid frequencies to the midrange driver and the lows to the woofer or subwoofer.
Ferrite. In speakers, a magnet material that packs high energy in a compact size. Flip Down Faceplate. A technique that preserves maximum real estate on the front panel for displays and buttons by relocating the CD loading slot. Frequency. The number of times per second that an audio or radio wave goes through a complete cycle. Originally measured in cycles per second (cps), which are now called Hertz (Hz). Audio frequencies extend from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

Hands-Free Calling. More and more states are outlawing talking on handheld cell phones when driving. Hands-free operation is a key benefit of Bluetooth head units, when used with compatible phones. First aid guide also provides info on what to do if an accident occurs. HD Radio A system of superior-quality broadcasts that transmits digital signals along with conventional AM and FM broadcasts. HD Radio requires no monthly subscription fee.11 HD Radio with iTunes tagging. Receives high-quality digital HD Radio signals and captures the titles of songs you like so you can find them later at the iTunes store.9 HFP (Hands Free Profile). Industry standard that enables Sony Mobile Audio Bluetooth head units to make and receive telephone calls via compatible Bluetooth phones. High Level Input. A power amplifier input that accepts speakerlevel signals. Accommodates factory head units that do not offer preamp outputs. HOP/Aramid/Carbon Fiber Matrix. A Sony speaker cone formulation that interweaves our patented Highly Oriented Polyolefine (HOP) fibers with Aramid and Carbon Fibers for low distortion even at high volume.
Decibel (dB). Commonly used for signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range, a unit of relative signal strength. +3 dB is perceived as twice as loud as 0 dB. Detachable Faceplate. The front panels of Sony Mobile Audio receivers separate from the main body. This security measure makes the head unit much less attractive to potential thieves. Diaphragm. The part of a speaker that converts motion into sound. Subwoofer, woofer and midrange diaphragms are commonly cone-shaped, while tweeter diaphragms are commonly dome-shaped.

HOP (Highly Oriented Polyolefine). A Sony speaker diaphragm material molded at extremely high pressure for very high stiffness, low weight and high power handling. HPF (High Pass Filter). A crossover filter that blocks low frequencies and "passes" highs. Typically serves tweeters or midrange drivers.

Noise. In audio, a degradation that is unrelated to the audio signal. For example, static or hiss that is present when no music playing is noise. RDS (Radio Data System). A system for displaying artist, track and album name when receiving compatible FM broadcasts. Rear Bass Enhancer. Advanced Sound Engine feature that emulates the sound of rear subwoofers, even if you only have full-range speakers in the back. Receiver. An audio component that typically combines an AM/ FM tuner, preamplifier and power amplifier. In Mobile Audio, the receiver often includes a CD player. RF modulator. A method of receiving auxiliary sources as if they were FM radio stations. The sound quality of RF modulation is generally inferior to a true auxiliary input.
Subwoofer. A speaker drive unit that specializes in deep bass, for example below 100 Hz. Surround. The soft edge around a speaker cone that enables free back-and-forth movement. SVC (Single Voice Coil). The configuration of a typical speaker drive unit.
OEM. Original Equipment Manufacturer. In Mobile Audio, the factory electronics originally supplied with the vehicle. Omnidirectional. In speakers, the characteristic of lowfrequency bass that makes it appear to come from everywhere. This enables a single subwoofer to serve an entire surround sound system.
Information Bar. TomTom navigation display that summarizes vital trip information including distance to next turn, distance to destination, estimated time to destination and estimated arrival time. iPhone app control.5 The ability of Sony AV Centers to display and control select iPhone apps. Saves drivers from potentially dangerous fumbling with the phone itself. IPx5 rating. A rigorous test of splash proofing, which select Sony Marine Audio components pass.14 IQ Routes8 feature. Exclusive TomTom navigation technology that evaluates routes based on actual traffic speeds. Recommends the fastest route for the time of day. Uses data collected from over 6 million drivers.
Pandora internet radio control. Enables the Sony receiver to control smartphone streaming of the hugely successful Pandora service and to display the song title, artist name and thumbs up/down status. Can work via USB 1-wire (for iPhone) or Bluetooth connectivity (for Android and Blackberry phones). Parametric Equalization. Highly flexible equalization controls for which the center frequency and sometimes the slope are adjustable, in addition to conventional boost and cut adjustments. Passenger APP Control. A/V receiver feature that displays content from select audio and video applications 5 directly from an iPod Touch or iPhone portable that passengers control. Passenger Control. The flexibility to connect a digital music player and operate it through either the head unit front panel (driver control) or the music player itself (passenger control). Passive Crossover. A crossover that operates on speaker-level signals, employs no active circuit components and requires no DC power. PBAP (Phonebook Access Profile). Industry standard that enables Sony Bluetooth head units to download an entire contact directory from a compatible Bluetooth phone.9 PEI (PolyEtherImide). A film material for extremely light dome tweeters, capable of excellent high frequency response. PEN (Polyethylene Naphthalate). Cone material that promotes stiffness and low distortion in midrange cones. Polypropylene. Synthetic woofer cone material for high stiffness, low distortion. Preloaded Maps of US & Canada. TomTom navigation provides the most accurate maps with over 1 million more miles of road in the US than other GPS brands. Power Handling. A measure of a speaker's ability to accept amplifier power, in watts. Preamp Outputs. Head unit outputs at "line level," prior to power amplification. Preamp outputs are preferred for connecting external power amplifiers. Preamplifier. The circuits of an audio system that select the source and provide volume, bass, treble, balance and fader adjustment. This can be a separate component or be built into the receiver.
SensMe App. Combination of PC software and head unit technology that automatically develops playlists for digital music files. Acts like a hotel concierge to match the music to your specific mood. SensMe Channels. Feature that organizes your digital music files into virtual radio stations based on mood, time of day and driving occasion. Up to 500 tracks per channel. SensMe Mood. Feature that organizes up to 200 digital music tracks, then lets you select music on a two-dimensional chart. One dimension is Fast/Slow. The other is your choice of Mood (Sad/Happy), Type (Soft/Hard), Style (Acoustic/Electronic) or Time (Morning/Midnight). Simple Secure Pairing (SSP). The ability to quickly establish Bluetooth communication without the fuss of first entering in a passkey.9 SiriusXM Ready. System that enables SiriusXM satellite radio subscribers to connect to selected Sony receivers through a single tuner module. Theres no need to choose between separate modules and cables for Sirius and XM services.11 Smartphone Connectivity. The ability of Sony AV Centers to display and control the apps of connected smartphones. Saves drivers from potentially dangerous fumbling with the smartphones themselves. Features include TeleNav app control for iPhone (available August 2012 via Firmware update), iPhone app control (available on select AV receivers) and app control for phones with Mirror-Link technology (For additional information and compatibility please visit: www.mirrorlink.com).16 S/N (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). The difference between a 0 dB reference signal level and the noise "floor," measured in dB. An important measure of audio quality. Sony Bus. A Mobile Audio technology that enables system expansion with trunk-mounted components controlled through the head unit. Options include HD Radio tuner, satellite radio tuners, CD changer and more. Sony Bluetooth technology. Other car receivers can establish Bluetooth communications to a mobile phone or a digital music player but not both at once.9 Thanks to this exclusive technology, Sony receivers can handle two devices simultaneously.
TeleNav app control. Selected Sony AV Centers can display and control the TeleNav app one of the top navigation apps for iPhone. Saves drivers from potentially dangerous fumbling with the phone itself.19 Text Icon. Front panel display that indicates when you have unanswered Short Message Service (SMS) text messages. TFT (Thin Film Transistor). The common working principle of a pixel in an LCD monitor. Thiele-Small Parameters. Subwoofer specifications that enable customizers to build their own, perfectly tailored subwoofer enclosures. TomTom navigation module. Optional module for selected Sony AV Centers that adds the accurate start-up, superior road coverage and PC-updateability. Tune Tray. Feature of Sony DSX Series Digital Media Receivers that enables you to actually store a digital media player inside the head unit. Its neater and more secure than typical USB connections. Tuner. An audio component that receives radio broadcasts. An AM/FM tuner is typically built into a Mobile Audio receiver. Tweeter. A loudspeaker drive unit that specializes in high treble.

Jump Mode. A Sony feature for easy access to songs on a digital music player. Jumps forward in increments of 10%.
Listening Position. Advanced Sound Engine feature that compensates for the less-than-ideal car seating locations to restore natural sound. LPF (Low Pass Filter). A crossover filter that blocks high frequencies and "passes" lows. Typically serves subwoofers, woofers or midrange drivers.
Map Updates. TomTom navigation feature that enables you to refresh system maps with the latest information from the Internet, then connect the TomTom module to your head unit and drive. MapShare technology. Make instant edits to your map on your TomTom device and share information with other users when connected to your computer. Meta data. In audio: artist, track and title information. Mica Reinforced Cellular Glass Fiber. A composite material that achieves extreme stiffness in Sony subwoofer cones. Midrange. Speaker drive unit that specializes in the middle frequencies, from about 500 to 3,000 Hz. Mirror-Link technology. MirrorLink is a technology standard developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) that allows consumers to use their smartphone16 in a car without looking at or touching their phone. The technology achieves this through two-way communication between the smartphone and the in-vehicle infotainment system. CCC-approved applications and content are mirrored from the mobile device onto the automotive in-dash . MP3. Short for MPEG-1, Audio Layer 3, a popular codec in Internet audio and digital music players. My TomTom software. Navigation feature makes it easy to get new PC software, download new maps, access free content and more.
USB (Universal Serial Bus). A common computer interface with important applications in Mobile Audio. USB 1-wire. Sony's most powerful USB solution in Mobile Audio, this enables you to connect, control and charge a compatible digital music player.2 USB direct. Direct connection and control of compatible USB digital music players and compatible USB thumbdrives.2
Voice coil. Part of a speaker drive unit that forces the diaphragm to move when power is applied. Current through the voice coil generates magnetic fields, which interact with the speaker's magnet, causing motion.
WMA. A codec used for distributing music files over the Internet and playing them on digital music players. Woofer. A loudspeaker drive unit that specializes in low frequencies. Woofers are sometimes supplemented with subwoofers that handle only the deepest bass.
Quick-BrowZer technology. A feature of Sony USB 1-wire head units that enables you to browse a connected digital music player by artist, genre, album or playlist.
Speaker. An audio component that converts electrical power into sound waves. Speaker Level. The audio signal after power amplification. Spoken Street Names. TomTom navigation feature that announces turn-by-turn directions, including street and place names.
XM Satellite Radio. A subscription digital radio service that broadcasts from a fleet of orbiting satellites.11
