Core Yogas 1
Kahala "large drum" Yoga The 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles, while the lagna lord is strong. "One will be learned, of high moral training, energetic, adventurous, handsome, charming, wellbalanced, obedient, having the best pleasures of life, lording over a few villages, and endowed with a complete army consisting of chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry." This good placement of the 4th lord in reference to Jupiter in the first version of this yoga indicates a happy native who feels that their life has purpose and who is, therefore, energetic and inspired. Sankha "conch shell" Yoga The 5th and 6th lords in mutual angles, and the lagna lord strong. "One will be endowed with wealth, spouse, sons, and land. Having a life of enjoyment, one is also kindly disposed, compassionate, propitious, intelligent, meritorious, beneficent, and longlived. One has knowledge of the sacred scriptures, is well conducted, and may live one year after the tale of eighty is completed. One has the authority to discipline or to punish." The Sankha Yoga formed by the first condition of the 5th and 6th lords in mutual angles supports self-employment or authority and rids the native of performing service. It also indicates a healer or doctor very capable of removing disease in the event that other factors in the horoscope indicate a healer. Chandra "Moon" Yoga The 10th lord in an angle, trine, or 2nd from the Moon. "One becomes a king having special kinds of gems, diamonds and jewels." This common yoga indicates the importance of the relationship between one's mind and one's karmas. The 10th lord in an angle, trine, or in the 2nd from the Moon indicates harmony between one's mind and karmas. The native's actions will correspond with their mentality and they will be more comfortable with their works. On the other hand, the 10th lord not in these places indicates a lack of harmony, or conflict in the case of the 10th lord being in the 6th or 8th from the Moon, between one's mind and karmas. In this case the natives actions don't necessarily correspond to their mentality, and they don't feel as comfortable with their works. This yoga, by itself, is not a very powerful success producer but it does exert an important influence upon the native's relationship to not only their career, but to all the deeds they are required to perform. Raja "king" Yoga Jupiter in the 10th and the Moon in the 5th. "One will conquer his senses, will perform penance and shine forth with excellent royal marks giving way to a high status." This yoga indicates a very imaginative and optimistic mentality, as well as a tendency towards spiritual mindedness. Kahala "large drum" Yoga The dispositor of the lord of the rasi occupied by the lagna lord is in its exaltation rasi or own rasi, and in an angle or trine. "One will thrive well, be noble, benevolent, kind, propitious, and respected by other men." Not only is the dispositor of the lagna lord significant, as indicated in the previous Parvata Yoga, but also the dispositor of the lagna lord's dispositor. Amala "stainless" Yoga Solely a benefic in the 10th from the lagna or the Moon. "Amala Yoga will confer fame lasting as long as Chandra and the stars exist. One will be honored by the king, enjoy abundant pleasures, have children, be charitable, fortunate, liberal, and gentle, fond of relatives, helpful to others, prudent, pious, and virtuous." The 10th house, karma bhava, indicates the manner in which the native performs his actions. Solely a benefic there indicates good actions, directed cleanly with little distractions or

disruptions that would be caused by any other planets also being in the 10th. More than one benefic in the 10th would not give "stainless" deeds since the planets would at best be neutrals to each other and would, therefore, only support each other in their mutual indications, while disrupting each other's indications that are at variance. This yoga is quite common, and by itself does not indicate great results in the dasa of the planet forming the Amala Yoga. However, if this planet is also forming other significant yogas, then its dasa is very significant and successful. Amara "imperishable" Yoga All malefics (not including Rahu and Ketu) in angles or all benefics in angles. "Malefics give ownership of vast lands. Benefics give abundant wealth." A simple concept, malefics, especially Saturn and Mars, are inclined to give land rather than wealth. Whether it is land or wealth, they will be lasting if all the malefic or all the benefics are respectively in angles. If a horoscope has more malefics, especially Saturn and Mars, in the angles than benefics, then more wealth, if any, will be in the form of landed property. If more benefics are in the angles, more wealth, if any, will be in the form of moveable possessions, money, etc. Kapata "deceit" Yoga A malefic in the 4th, and the 4th lord under malefic influence or hemmed by malefics. "One will be a hypocrite." Natives with Kapata Yoga are not all that they appear to be. The 4th house is a hidden house and malefics influences to it indicate negative thoughts, emotions, feelings and actions that at first may be difficult to discern, but that with time are discovered. Oftentimes these natives hide things from themselves first, and, as a consequence, secondarily to others, particularly female natives with this yoga. If this yoga is very severe it can indicate a native who is very disturbed and who as a result commits atrocities, while the average case of this yoga simply hides minor actions that would cause embarrassment, are not socially acceptable, or that are simply not considered good conduct. The Sun is a very weak malefic for this yoga, since the Sun is a noble planet. Rahu and Saturn indicate the worst type of deceit and negative thinking, while Mars and Ketu are middling in their deceit, though they can indicate hidden violent tendencies. This is a yoga that requires careful scrutiny as it can indicate a wide range of hidden negative actions. Reka "low caste" Yogas The 9th lord combust and the lagna and 2nd lords debilitated. "One born under Reka Yoga has neither knowledge nor wealth, and is penurious, hostile, lustful and wrathful. One's mind is always distressed, and one is disagreeable, having no beauty or grace. Crafty, filthy, and quarrelsome, one lives on alms. Full of envy and rage, one reviles gods and Brahmans and is berated daily by his wife, sons, and entire family. Evil-minded, one will be given to bad ways, be ill off, and intent on injuring and abusing their relatives. One will have ugly or diseased nails, be short-lived, and beg all around. One may also be a mute, cripple, blind, deaf or insane. One's thoughts may be betrayed by the change in their eyes." Reka means low in the sense of negative or minus. This yoga, therefore, gives negativities and take away the desired in life. Often these yogas indicate a native who does not succeed in something important that they hope to do, or upon doing so they do not receive the expected happiness.

when success is accomplished and good deeds performed, if the lagna, Moon, and especially the Sun are not afflicted. For females, this yoga gives a greater ability to be receptive to the best possible situations and opportunities in life due to the receptive qualities of the feminine signs. Qualities of patience, contentment, tolerance, and feeling-centered discrimination are noted. From inner happiness arise good deeds and success if the lagna, Sun and especially the Moon are not afflicted. It has been noted that when the factors forming this yoga are reversed (a male during a night birth and the lagna, Sun and Moon in even rasis, or a female during a day birth and the lagna, Sun and Moon in odd rasis) males become quite feminine in nature and women quite masculine in nature. An important principle emerges from this yogamen's horoscopes should have the lagna, Sun and Moon in odd rasis with the Sun in the visible half (a day birth), and women's horoscopes should have the lagna, Sun and Moon in even rasis with the Sun in the invisible half (a night birth). The more of these factors present, the better the capacity for the native to be happy and truly successful in a balanced fashion. Vesi Yoga A planet, not including the Moon, Rahu or Ketu, in the 2nd from the Sun. "One born in Vesi Yoga will be even sighted, soft-spoken, firm in word, truthful, happy, bold, dear to his men, and popular among relations. Long-bodied, and indolent he will walk slowly, and have a bent body. He will be well balanced in his earning and spending and be endowed with some wealth. Malefics forming this yoga will give contrary effects." Planets forming Vesi Yoga rise after the Sun; therefore, these planets are those that the native applies to that which they have in their lives, as compared to planets forming Vosi Yoga, which are used for purposes of initiation. Planets forming Vesi Yoga are not as activating and initializing as planets forming Vosi Yoga, rather they are what the native uses to benefit from and take advantage of that which they do have. The traits of these planets will become more noticeable as one gets to know the native. Since the Sun is a very activating and initializing planet, Vosi Yoga is a bit more powerful than Vesi Yoga. Classical texts, therefore, give Vesi Yoga slightly less influential results than they give Vosi Yoga. Classical texts also give very different results to Vesi Yoga being formed by benefics vs. malefics: "The person born in a Suvesi Yoga (Vesi Yoga formed by benefics) will be very handsome, amiable, happy, a store of merit, brave, triumphant over his foes, liberal, intelligent, intrepid, virtuous, eloquent, a king, delighting in scientific pursuits, and possessed of comfort, fame, wealth, and strength." Benefics forming Vesi Yoga indicate that the native takes care of, uses, and benefits from the things in their life in a well to do fashion, which includes fairness, kindness, balance, gentleness, care, etc. As one gets to know the native, enjoyable, kind, fair and comforting qualities, in accordance with the nature of the benefic, will become evident in their nature. Benefics forming Vesi Yoga, which are debilitated in the rasi or navamsa, however, indicate troublesome character qualities that harm the native's capacity to take care of and benefit from the things they have in their life. Mercury"The native will be a servant, will suffer penury, and be soft-spoken, modest and bashful." Mercury forming Vesi Yoga by being in the 2nd from the Sun indicates natives that are fair and practical in taking care of that which is in their lives, and do so in such a way that these things grow and give greater security and happiness. A communicative, friendly, and humorous nature become more noticeable as one gets to know these natives. Venus"The native will be timid, will face obstacles in his missions, will have pleasant movements, and be defeated." Venus forming Vesi Yoga by being in the 2nd from the Sun indicates that the native very much enjoys the things they have in their life and that they recognize the importance of taking

care of these things. Qualities of diplomacy, grace, charm, care, passion and enjoyment become more noticeable as one gets to know the native. Anapha Yoga A planet, other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu, in the 12th from the Moon. "One born in Anapha Yoga will be a king, a man of influence and authority, well dressed, virtuous, famous, strong, magnanimous, charming, good natured, healthy, blessed with material comforts, and happy. One is calm in disposition, enjoying pleasures of the senses and peace of mind. One will have political wisdom, moral training, know many sastras, be steadfast, honored, and have enormous wealth. He will possess a beautiful body and be capable of attracting the fairer sex." Planets in the 12th from the Moon indicate the conditioning and attitude with which the native meets life's experiences. Unlike the similar Solar Yogas, classical texts give generally good effects to benefics or malefics forming Anapha Yoga and the other similar Lunar Yogas; they do however give different effects due to the different planets forming Anapha Yoga: Saturn"One is virtuous, long armed, broad shouldered, meritorious, possessed of numerous cattle and similar possessions. He is a leader and his words carry weight and are accepted. He is yoked to a bad woman." Saturn forming Anapha Yoga by being in the 12th from the Moon indicates that the native's consciousness has been conditioned by hardships, stress and fears, suppression, or discipline. This creates a tendency towards caution and preparedness or indifference, but also a greater capacity to handle difficulties and for detachment. The fears and stress in this case have not damaged the personality but rather hardened and strengthened it, or served to detach the mind. The houses, planets, etc. that Saturn rules indicate those things and people that have served to stress, and thereby strengthen or detach the native. The effects of Anapha, Sunapha, and Durudhara Yogas are less if the Moon is weak by having less than 20 virupas of paksha bala. This occurs when the Moon is within a 60-degree orb of the Sun. In this event, the Moon has little light. The light of the Moon indicates the receptive ability of the Moon; when it is less the Moon gains less from the planets forming the Anapha, Sunapha or Durudhara Yoga. If a planet forming one of these yogas is debilitated, then that planet will influence the Moon and, therefore, the mind, with stress relevant to the difficulties of the debilitated planet. A debilitated planet will actually serve to stress the native and scar their subconscious, the result being a weakness relevant to the planet rather than strength. Saturn debilitated indicates that the native has suffered stress that has harmed their self-esteem and which does nothing, therefore, to strengthen them. Though the yoga effects of any yogas that the debilitated planet may be forming are empowered, the mind will suffer a greater amount of stress than if the debilitated planet was elsewhere. Sama "mediocre" Yoga The Moon in a panaphara (2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th house) from the Sun. The native's wealth, intelligence, knowledge, and skill shall be middling. These are important yogas that must be used correctly or else they will be misleading. A casual observation of only a few horoscopes will reveal that there are wealthy, intelligent, and knowledgeable personages with the Moon in an angle from the Sun, and those of lesser abilities and wealth born with the Moon in an apoklima from the Sun. These yogas obviously, therefore, do not impose a restriction upon the native's wealth or intelligence. The Moon gives growth of all things and the light of the Moon is dependent upon the Sun, therefore, the growth and realization of any productive yoga, whether one that grants success, wealth, marriage, children, or anything else, is dependent upon the Moon's placement from the Sun, which indicates the level of preparedness with which the native meets the fructification of a productive yoga. These three yogas are not meant to indicate the full measure of the native's wealth, intelligence and skill, but only to indicate the measure of wealth, intelligence and skill the native has upon the initiation of a productive yoga with which to bring the results of the yoga to fruition.

When Sama Yoga (mediocre yoga) is present the Moon is in a panaphara from the Sun. Panapharas represent receptivity of an activity. Therefore, in horoscope with the Moon in a panaphara from the Sun, the native is relatively well prepared to be receptive to what is to transpire upon the fruition of a good yoga. The results being they are relatively well prepared and have a reasonable amount of the resourcefulness, education and skillfulness required upon the initiation of a good yoga to smoothly bring things to fruition. Following are a few important yogas from the book Core Yogas that Kala is not smart enough to find yet, but which are well worth checking for manually: Mridanga "tambour" Yoga The lord of the navamsa of an exalted planet is in an angle or trine, and an occupant of the angle or trine is strong in own or exaltation rasi, while the lagna lord is strong. "One is noble born, of mien and fame such as it is the good fortune of sovereigns to have." In this yoga a planet must be well placed by being in exaltation, and the navamsa lord of that planet must be very well placed in the rasi by being in an angle or trine and with a planet in its own or exaltation rasi. The benefits of the yoga come from the indications of the exalted planet in question as well as the house its navamsa lord falls in. The lagna lord must also be well placed and strong so that the native can successfully activate the yoga and benefit from its results. Kalpadruma "tree of plenty" Yoga The lagna lord, its dispositor, the dispositor of that, and the navamsa lord of the last must be in an angle, trine, own rasi or exaltation rasi. "One will be a pious, strong, and merciful king endowed with all kinds of wealth, and fond of war." This yoga further illustrates the concept of dispositors, including the navamsa dispositor. The more times a dispositor of a dispositor is well placed, the more auspicious the original planet in question becomes. Kalpadruma yoga, like Parijatha Yoga, helps the native to fulfill every desire. Parijatha "celestial coral tree" Yoga The dispositor of the lord of the lagna lord, and the navamsa lord of that dispositor, must be in an angle, trine, own rasi or exaltation rasi. "One will be a sovereign attentive to their duty and engagements, of compassionate disposition, destined to be happy in the middle and latter portion of life, respected and obeyed by other kings, fond of war, and possessing elephants and horses." The Parijatha is a celestial tree that has the power to grant wishes. This yoga, therefore, helps the native to fulfill every desire. This yoga emphasizes the importance of the navamsa dispositor of a planet, which is just as important as its rasi dispositor.
