Dark Wizards and Witches

good. Some of them gone bad."

A Dark Wizard or Dark Witch is any magical person who practices the Dark Arts. They
can summon Dementors even dead bodies and all manner of Dark creatures to make huge
army and command them to attack their enemies. Noted Dark wizards and witches
include Herpo the Foul, Morgan le Fay, Gellert Grindelwald and Lord Voldemort, as well
as the latter's followers, known as Death Eaters.

Others who might be considered Dark Wizards are the owners and customers of shops
such as Borgin and Burkes, and arguably students of Durmstrang as the curriculum there
includes the Dark Arts. Many Dark wizards and witches appear to believe in the
importance of blood purity and to hate Muggles.

In Hogwarts, Most known dark wizards and witches are in Slytherin, though there is not
necessarily a connection.
Dementor
"Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the
darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope,
and happiness out of the air around them... Get too near a Dementor and every
good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. If it can, the
Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like
itself...soul-less and evil. You will be left with nothing but the worst experiences of
your life."
—Remus Lupin to Harry Potter

A Dementor is a Dark creature, considered one of the foulest that inhabit the world.
Dementors feed off human happiness, and thus cause depression and despair to any who
are in close proximity to them. They are also capable of consuming a person's soul,
leaving their victims in a permanent vegetative state, and thus are often referred to as
soul-sucking fiends. The Ministry of Magic employed Dementors as the guardians of
Azkaban until mid-1996, when Lord Voldemort was sighted in the Ministry and their
defection to his side was realized. Dementors hold no loyalty except to whomever will
provide them with the most souls to consume

Basilisk
The Basilisk is a giant serpent, also known as the King of Serpents. It is a creature bred
by dark wizards, specifically Herpo the Foul, the first to breed a Basilisk. This was
managed by causing an egg of a chicken to hatch under a toad. Basilisk breeding was
banned in Medieval times, by writ of the Ban on Experimental Breeding.

Because the Basilisk is a serpent, a Parselmouth may place a Basilisk under his or her
control.

Acromantula

The Acromantula are a species of giant spider, native to the rainforests of Southeast
Asia, particularly Borneo. Acromantulas are believed to be a wizard-bred species,
designed to guard dwellings or treasure hoardes, and were first created before the Ban on
Experimental Breeding in 1965. They have a taste for human flesh.

Banshee
The Banshee is a dark creature with the appearance of a woman with floor lengthened
black hair, and a skeletal green tinged face. The Brandon Banshee was supposedly
defeated by Gilderoy Lockhart, which he describes in his book, Break with a Banshee;
though he admits to stealing credit for his books. Seamus Finnigan is afraid of Banshees,
as we see when a Boggart turns into a Banshee facing him, which makes sense because of
his Irish background. Seamus also mentions it when Harry Potter opens up the golden
egg and hears a screeching sound.
Runespoor
The Runespoor is a three-headed snake native to Burkina Faso in Africa. Runespoors are
six to seven feet long, with orange and black stripes. Since they are very easy to spot, the
Burkina Faso Ministry of Magic has had to make several forests Unplottable for the
Runespoor's use.

The Runespoor has long been associated with Dark Wizards, and what is known of their
habits is due in large part to the Parselmouths that have conversed with the creatures.

Each of the Runespoor's head serves a different function. The left head is the planner, the
middle head is the dreamer, and the right head is the critic, whose fangs are highly
venomous. It is common to see the far right head missing, as the other two heads often
band together to bite it off when it critises the other two heads too much. Because of this,
the Runespoor rarely lives to a great age.

Salamander
The Salamander is a small fire dwelling lizard that feeds on flames. They are born out of
the flames of fire, and appear to be blue or red depending on the heat of the flames. They
live as long as the flames that spawned them.

The Salamander can survive outside out of the flames that birthed it for up to six hours if
fed on pepper. Salamander blood has powerful regenerative and curative properties.

Pixies

Cornish Pixies in the film.

A Pixie is a small, bright blue mischief-maker, and loves tricks and practical jokes. It is
able to fly, despite being wingless, and enjoys lifting people up by their ears and
depositing them on the tops of trees and buildings. Pixies can only communicate with
other pixies. Their voices are described as "so shrill it was like listening to a lot of
arguing budgies". They bear live young.

Lycans/Werewolf

A werewolf is a human who, upon the rising of the full moon, turns into a fearsome near-
wolf. Werewolves can be distinguished from regular wolves by several small
distinguishing characteristics, such as the pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tail.
At all other times, they appear as normal humans, though will often seem to be ill as the
full moon approaches. This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, usually
occuring when a human is bitten by a transformed werewolf. There is no known cure.
Inferi
Harry: "Er... right, Well, on that leaflet, it said something about Inferi. What
exactly are they? The leaflet wasn't very clear."
Prof. Dumbledore: "They are corpses, Dead bodies that have been bewitched to
do a Dark wizard's bidding. Inferi have not been seen for a long time, however,
not since Voldemort was last powerful.... He killed enough people to make an
army of them, of course."
— Harry Potter and Dumbledore while they're travelling to Horace Slughorn's
place.

An Inferius (plural: Inferi) is the dead body of a human reanimated by a Dark wizard.
They have no free will, and cannot think; their purpose is merely to serve as puppets of
the Dark wizard. They were used by Voldemort in both the First Wizarding War and the
Second Wizarding War.
