Social stratification
The people in every society have different ranks as high and low .this distribution of peoples of society in a groups on the basis of their status is called social staratification. This distribution may be on the basis of occupation, caste, education , sources of income , prestige and political power. The people attain these sources and get into a class . in this way the whole society is divided into a few classes generally high, middle and low called stratification. Size of land holding in rural areas and the type of occupations in urban areas are the major criteria of stratification in pakistani society or in pakistan. Stratifican differ from society to society . in united states of America 22% of the population is still considered low class while these people have higher standard of living than the high class people of pakistan. Stratification is the classification of peoples with in the society. Dividing the society into classes according to status , Determinents of social stratification Max weber gave a model of three elements for social stratification. Ieconomic resources , prestige and political power. In pakistani society , the following factors determine social stratification. Economic resources: The level of income from all resources is an important indicator of one s place in society . The size of landholding in rural areas is an important measure. Those who own and cultivate their own lands having its size above subsistance level( 12.5 acres) may be placed in upper class. Those who own their own land below subsistance level and cultivate others land also may be placed in middle class. Those who tanets and those who belong to serving class like carpentor, blacksmith , cobbler, barber,washerman and others can be placed in lower class. In urban areas the big industrialists, whole sale and big businessmen, high class officials belonging to government and other agencies , high class officials belonging to government and other agencies, high class technicians and other professionals like advocates, medical practitioners and other belongs to upper class. Occupations: occupation is also an important indicator of stratification in every society. In pakistani society the high class professionals are oweners landlords, owner cultivators , industrialists , big whole sale businessmen and high class government and semi government officials . in middle class , come the small owened cultivators , middleclass servicemen and small parteners in industrial units . the skilled and semi skilled labour also come in this category. Whether their income exceeds that of this class. In lower class all menial workers like cobblers , corpenters , blacksmith , washerman, peon , sweeper and unskilled labour etc. How do we get economic resources places as in a class as high or low. Prestige: if individual has high prestige in social life , he is regarded most respectful person . The social prestige in a community in our society depends upon the following factors. Nobility of individual Harmless for others Free from social evils ( drinking , adultery , gambling , deceiving , robbery and fraud) Participating generally in walfare works with in the community( sharing in school, dispensry, mosque, madrassa , road and other projects of public walfare) Helping the needy an worried peoples He is true to his words ( it means he never goes back upon his promise) He is not a lier , he is faith ful to his religion. An individual in pakistani society claiming these traits enjoys high prestige in the community. Here the prestige is attained by spending the economic resources in their social life Power: power is one of the important factor of social startification in pakistani society . those who attain more power are given more respect in society. Caste: some cost are belived to high status like sayyed, rajput, mughal and awan ete. And some are generally placed in lower class menials and labborers etc. Education: the illitarate persons belong to lower class. Those who receive only education up to school may be placed in middle class and those who get college and university education and professionals education may be placed in upper class. Class A group of people having more or less equal economic resiources and indicating similar standard of living in society.
