Sussex board approves change to Armory Park softball diamond

Conversion will allow use for baseball
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Sussex Village Board approved the conversion of a softball diamond at Armory Park to fit the dimensions for baseball last week. The proposal calls for allowing the diamond to be used for both softball and baseball. The conversion to baseball will involve the installation of a portable mound in the softball diamond that will be left there for baseball games but can be removed for softball games. The number of youth hardball rental requests has jumped to the point that the village cannot accommodate the requests for games let alone practices unless we consider alterations to one of the existing fields, Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said in a memo to the board. The number of teams with the growth of the Junior Chargers and other programs has grown as the community has grown and there is little reason to believe this growth in youth baseball will not continue for the foreseeable future. Another change is that the leagues are going to multiple games per week. There are simply not enough fields available in the area for use. In the memo, Smith noted that three teams used the hardball diamond in 2012 and there are five teams that need to use it this year. It is anticipated that six to seven teams will need to use the hardball diamond in 2014. In addition, Smith noted that the village received 135 requests outside of the existing teams to use the hardball diamond this year. Our park system cannot accommodate this demand with only one hardball diamond. The long term solution is the Quad Plex as part of the Village Park Master Plan, but that is several years away. The lights at the Quad Plex that would have one additional hardball field would allow double games (6 p.m. and 9 p.m.) which would assist the backlog a lot, Smith said. The village cannot just switch over one of the youth fields to hardball because of the needs for youth baseball at younger ages and softball that cant play on a mound/grass system.

During discussion at the Feb. 26 Village Board meeting, Trustee Tim Dietrich said the portable mound would cost approximately $3,000, of which the Junior Chargers have raised $2,000 for the mound. He said the mound would take four people to install and remove. Etc.: The Community Development

Authority (CDA) supported the proposed boundaries for the villages proposed sixth tax incremental finance (TIF) district. The TIF which is at the southwest corner of Main Street and Hwy. 74 is the location of a former cannery operation. The Mammoth Springs development is proposed at the location. During the CDA report, Trustee Matthew Cmeyla said the committee supported the boundaries at a Feb. 21 meeting. A TIF is where taxes directed at local units of government are instead used to pay for infrastructure improvements. The local units of government later benefit from the increased property value generated by the improvements. A TIF requires final approval from a board comprised of representatives from local units of government. The board approved authorizing general obligation bonds not to exceed $725,000 for sewer projects, refunding general obligation funds not to exceed $2.6 million and the sale of general obligation corporate purchase bonds for $3,325,000. Dave Anderson, a financial consultant for the village, explained that the $725,000 bonds will cover sewer projects for the next two years. The $2.6 million will refinance sewer bonds from 2004 as well as refinance the Build America bonds. The $3,325,000 is the total amount for issuing the new bonds.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have severe bone loss in my lower jaw. I have 2 roots left in the front of my mouth. Is it possible to have bone grafting done in order to get dentures put in? Dear Sheri, you have some good questions and the ability to add bone when needed is important to place implants or mini-implants and protect vital nerve structures. That being said, I can not tell you if you require grafting prior to your dentures without seeing you and evaluating your existing teeth, roots and bone. Sometimes where you have the root tips, implants can be placed to stabilize your dentures and keep them from popping up and requiring a lot of denture adhesive to hold them in place during talking and chewing. So you may not need any grafting, you may want to learn about stabilizing your dentures and creating an Upgrade path to enjoy better denture stability and chewing. We can discuss this at your comprehensive examination visit. Dear Dr. Winter, I have a slight underbite, otherwise, my teeth are actually quite straight. I had braces on my top teeth at a young age (I believe 11/12), and as I grew up and matured I developed an under bite. This seems to have resulted in some unnatural wear and chipping on a couple of my top teeth. Do you have any non-surgery solutions available? Dear Ted, there are many options for fixing underbites that are non-surgical but I can not comment on your options until I have completed an examination and x-ray visit. Sometimes orthodontics can correct your problem other times crowns can be used to change your bite. So surgery is always the last option considered. We invite our readers to call our office at 414-464-9021 to schedule a complimentary consultation or new patient examination

So many choices
By Tresa Erickson Bit by bit, you've been updating your kitchen, refacing the cabinets, repainting the walls and replacing the light fixtures. You've ordered new countertops, and while installing those, you'd also like to replace your sink. The cast iron sink currently in your kitchen has seen better days. Not only is it old, but it's stained and just doesn't work for all of the cooking you do. The time has come to go shopping, and get ready, the number of choices available will astound you. There are many types of kitchen sinks on the market today, and the materials they are made of vary just as much as the styles. Some of the more common styles include: Farmhouse sinks. These have an apron and can sit on top of the countertop or be mounted underneath. They are generally fairly deep. Prep sinks. These are fairly small and serve as a second sink. They work well for homeowners who entertain a lot or have more than one cook in the family. Trough sinks. There are long and lean and allow for more than one faucet and drain, making them convenient for kitchens with multiple cooks. Seamless sinks. These are part of the actual countertops, providing for a seamless look. They also eliminate the crevice between sink and countertop, making cleanup a breeze. Undermount sinks. These are designed to fit under the countertop, making cleanup easier. Homeowners simply wipe whatever debris is on the countertop into the sink. Vessel sinks. These sit on top of the countertop, and because they are higher, require less bending over. Although once reserved for bathrooms, vessel sinks are now being designed specifically for kitchens. These are just some of the more common sink choices. You are sure to come across more, including the traditional sink, which sits on the countertop.

Second at state: Daly, Olapo advance to wrestling finals

Two Menomonee Falls wrestlers advanced to the finals at the WIAA individual wrestling tournament Feb. 23. In semifinal action Feb. 22, Aaron Daly scored a 6-1 win over Preston Ernst in the Division 1 106-pound semifinal. Daly lost to Nolan Shea of Milton 11-4 in the final. Daly stated the tournament Feb. 21 with a 7-5 victory over Ethan Averill of Kettle Moraine and followed that with a 5-1 win over Xianou Xiong of Franklin in the quarterfinal. During an interview last week, Daly noted he wrestled against all his opponents at the club level and he beat his first around opponent earlier this season. Daly said he sought to emphasize the offense throughout the tournament, trying to get the first takedown. Being at state the first time will serve as the incentive to try to get there again, Daly indicated. "This time I was a little nervous getting into the state. Hopefully, it's not going to be as nerve-wracking in the future," Daly said. Ayoola Olapo scored a 3-2 decision over Jordan Reisinger of Tomah in the Division I 182-pound semifinal. Olapo lost Aaron Rothwell of Sheboygan North in the final, 5-2. Olapo started the tournament Feb. 21 with a 10-4 decision over Avery Sweeney of Milton and followed that with a 3-1 sudden victory over Derek Schindler of Hudson. We're really proud of the kids and their second place finishes. It's quite an accomplishment," Menomonee Falls Coach Jim McMahon said. Bill and Jerrott Holz also qualified for individual state for Menomonee Falls but didn't place. Going to (team) state The entire team will be going to the team state tournament, which will be held March 12 at the UW Fieldhouse. Menomonee Falls will face Bay Port in the opening round. "I thought we were going to have a really nice team," McMahon said when asked what he thought about this team prior to the season. He noted that getting several qualifiers for individual state and a team state bid takes several factors, including hard work and some luck. "It all came together for us this year. I probably didn't dream of two state finalists but I knew we had a quality team. I just hope the kids can stick together and maintain that throughout the season," McMahon said. For team state, McMahon said he would have the individual qualifiers talk to the rest of the squad about the state experience. "It will be an exciting tournament this Friday night (March 1)," McMahon said. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Germantown hammers Homestead, wins regional bracket

BY TROY SPARKS CORRESPONDENT Germantown Unable to handle the defensive pressure that Germantown applied, Homestead was doomed from the very beginning in their regional final game, resulting in a 70-44 regional final loss Feb. 23. When the Highlanders couldnt stop the press, the up-tempo game of the Warhawks or contain 7-footer Luke Fischer, they got physical. When the two North Shore Conference teams meet, its always a battle. "Homestead and Germantown is always a war," Germantown coach Steve Showalter said. "Nothing was easy tonight. We had some spurts where things werent going right." The Warhawks forced 16 turnovers with their defense, but they also had 10 first half turnovers and 14 in the game. They made up for their miscues with scoring from junior guard LaMonte Bearden and senior center Luke Fischer. They had 10 of Germantowns 17 first quarter points to take a 17-3 lead. Germantown (24-0) kept a double digit lead throughout the first half. Homestead scored seven straight points late in the second to cut the deficit to 10 points at 29-19. A three-point play by Bearden ended the first half scoring with Germantown leading 3219. The Warhawks had a 54-35 advantage entering the fourth quarter. The game was extra motivation for Bearden, who played his first two seasons at Homestead. He strayed from the offense, which resulted in some missed close shots. "The shots werent falling," Bearden said. "We were turning the ball over a little bit.." Added Steve Showalter, "He wants to put on a show when he plays. He didnt play well in the first half and he knew it. There was nothing that I needed to say other than we need the ball to pass. When we pass the ball around, its tough to compete with us." The Warhawks played better in the second half as they went to Fischer, using his size advantage to get points in the paint. Fischer had 18 through three quarters and finished with 20. "I felt like we had a little bit of an advantage with Luke," Showalter said. "We tried to ride him as much as we could." Germantown also got a big contribution from junior forward Jon Averkamp with his 14 points. Averkamp, a defensive cog, showed what he could do on offense. "He came through in the clutch," Fischer said. "He doesnt get to score (a lot), but tonight it was a different story, crashing the boards and getting offensive rebounds and finishing layups. Its always good when Jon can do that." Feb. 22: Warhawks dominate Waukesha South

Hamilton loses to Arrowhead in regional final

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Arrowhead reversed the result against Hamilton Feb. 23, leading from the opening basket to win a regional bracket on the Chargers home court, 49-36. The result avenged an upset Hamilton pulled on Arrowhead in the 2012 regional final. "We didn't hit some shots, we needed to make some plays and we had some opportunities," Hamilton Coach Andy Cerroni said afterward. An eight-point run gave Arrowhead a 13-5 lead after the first quarter, with Hamilton getting no closer than four points to the Warhawks in Hamiltons Mark Gryszkiewicz (3) drives the second quarter. Once the Warhawks shook the cobwebs off and played their brand of basketball, they dismantled visiting Waukesha South and rolled over the Blackshirts, 90-22, Feb. 22, in the Division 1 regional semifinals. Undersized South was stymied by the size advantage of the Warhawks, and it showed Fischer blocking five shots in the first quarter. Germantown committed five turnovers in the first quarter and had 11 in the contest. The Blackshirts got as close as four points at 14-10 late in the quarter. Germantown ended the quarter with a 9-0 run to lead 2310. Pressure defense is the trademark of Germantown, and they didnt let up against South, forcing 17 first half turnovers and 28 in the game. The Blackshirts didnt score in the second quarter. The Warhawks scored 26 straight points to take a 49-10 halftime lead. Fischer had 14 points at the half. Fischer left the game for good with 4:23 left in the third and 25 points. Near the end of the quarter, Germantown went to their bench, entering the fourth quarter with a 7617 advantage.
