COMPUTER SYSTEM
DEFINITION
A complete, working computer. Computer systems will include the computer along with any software and peripheral devices that are necessary to make the computer function. Every computer system, for example, requires an operating system.

A system of interconnected computers that share a central storage system and various peripheral devices such as a printers, scanners, or routers. Each computer connected to the system can operate independently, but has the ability to communicate with other external devices and computers. The complete computer made up of the CPU, memory and related electronics (main cabinet), all the peripheral devices connected to it and its operating system. Computer systems fall into two broad divisions: clients and servers. Client machines are the user's laptop and desktop computers. Servers reside in a network and share their data and applications with multiple users. They range from entry-level servers to mainframes.

A computer system is sized for the total workload based on the number of users sharing the system simultaneously, the type of work performed (business, CAD, engineering, scientific) and the volume of data that must be stored. Following are the components of a computer system.

HISTORY OF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM

The history of computer system is really as antique as the history of man. The first form of computing was counting, adding other arithmetic operations which were performed by the aid of the human body, Human parts such as the foes and fingers were used in counting while the eyes acted like the present day computer monitor. The human brain acts as the processor for processing of raw data. Other objects used were drawings of lines, sticks, stones etc 'Who invent the computer?" is not a question with a simple answer. The real answer is that many inventors contributed to the history of computers and that a computer is a complex piece of machinery made up of many parts, each of which can be considered a separate invention. No one person may be credited with the invention of computers, but several names stand proud in the crowd. In the 7th century B.C in China the ABACUS was said to have originated. The ABACUS is made of beads strewn on iron rods. Through various manipulations the ABACUS is used for addition and subtraction.

EXAMPLES OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

Some automobiles, electronic, machineries, etc are computerly operated and that is,they do not have softwares,But was specifically designed to perform a specific task.

PLATFORM
The hardware platform and operating system determine which programs can run on the computer. Every application is written to run under a specific CPU and operating system environment. The most widely used platform means more software is available for it. Seeplat form.

INPUT / OUTPUT
A server's input/output capacity determines the number of simultaneous users at terminals or desktop computers that it can support. See channel.

NUMBER OF CPUs & CORES

The more CPUs, the more processing that can take place at the same time. Modern desktop computers typically have two or more processing cores in their CPUs, and high-end server CPUs are available with as many as 64 and 128 cores. Multiple CPUs may also be used. See SMT and multi core .

CLOCK SPEED
The gigahertz (GHz) rate of the CPU determines internal processing speed. See MHz.

DISK&MEMORY
A computer system's disk capacity determines the amount of information immediately available to all users. A computer's memory capacity determines how many applications can be efficiently run at the same time.

FAULT TOLERANCE
The use of redundant processors, peripherals and power supplies provide continued operation in the event of component failure. See fault tolerant.

Information is funny stuff. The information for the web page you are looking at is recorded on a hard disk inside a computer located in New Britain, Connecticut. The information was copied from that physical device to other physical devices perhaps hundreds of times before it got to your computer where your web browser is using it to display these words on your monitor. Clearly information is something different from the devices used to store and transmit it. A computer system consists of both hardware and information stored on hardware. Information stored on computer hardware is often called software. The hardware components of a computer system are the electronic and mechanical parts. The software components of a computer system are the data and the computer programs. The major hardware components of a computer system are: Processor Main memory Secondary memory Input devices Output devices

For typical desktop computers, the processor, main memory, secondary memory, power supply, and supporting hardware are housed in a metal case. Many of the components are connected to the main circuit board of the computer, called the motherboard. The power supply supplies power for most of the components. Various input devices (such as the keyboard) and output devices (such as the monitor) are attached through connectors at the rear of the case.

FEATURES OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

There are certain qualities possessed by the computer that tend to make it advantageous over other means of data processing. Some of these advantageous include: High Speed: Computers are electronic devices and as such, can operate at the speed of electricity. This makes the computer so fast in operation that in a matter of seconds ,the computer can accomplish what will take human being days to accomplish. Accuracy: Computers do not make mistakes in so far as they are accurately programmed and are not faulty in terms of components . Because computers can operate error-free , they can be trusted to produce accurate results, which is very vital the user. Reliability: Just as they are accurate, computers are reliable and consistent in the information produced by it. Given the same program and same data, the result produced should be the same at all times . That is why computer-type devices like microprocessors are introduced into the household appliances and automobiles to increase their longevity and reliability. This does not mean that the computer cannot break down. When the computer breaks down, it is no longer operational and it is said to be down. The amount of time that the computer stays in an inoperable condition is referred to as downtime. Versatility: Computers are versatile. They can be used in many fields . Some areas in which the computer can be used include payroll, exam marking, accounting, military, teaching and learning, designing and manufacturing, entertainment, airline seat reservation, etc. Mass Storage Capability: Computers can store very large amounts of data for long periods of time. Precision : It is possible to represent information, especially numerical quantities , to any (reasonable) desired degree of magnitude. This quality is very useful in scientific and engineering applications. Security: Because data and information in computer systems are stored in machine-readable forms, they are protected to some extent from people who have no access to the computer by the use of passwords or some other form of identification. Thus, we can say that the computer provides a measure of security for data and information stored in it.
