Depending on the intended use and as-delivered condition (annealed / quenched and tempered), it must be checked whether repeated heat treatment is necessary. The annealing colours or scaling occurring during hot forming or welding impair the corrosion resistance. They must be removed by pickling, grinding or sand-blasting (iron-free!). Metal-cutting machining is the same as that for plain carbon steel grades of corresponding strength. REMANIT 4000 can be polished.
Welding
Good weldability using the TIG and manual arc welding processes, limited weldability using the MAG, MIG, submergedarc and resistance welding processes. Preheat at 100 to 300 C. In the upper temperature range for ferritic fillers. Filler metals: Similar Thermanit 14 K More highly alloyed CM* Nicro 82* * For welds which are not subjected to full mechanical stress and not in atmospheres containing sulphur at operating temperatures over 450 C. Recommended heat treatment after welding with a similar type of filler: 650-750 C
Notes on use
REMANIT 4000 is used as apparatus construction steel, particularly in cracking installations in the oil industry, owing to its good resistance to hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. REMANIT 4000 is also suitable for welded parts in water turbine and hydroelectric station construction. A smoothed (industrially polished) and residue-free surface is necessary in order to achieve optimum corrosion resistance of this chromium steel grade. The material displays higher resistance in quenched and tempered condition than in annealed condition.

Hot forming of this steel grade is difficult, as a mixed austenite-ferrite structure occurs at the forming temperatures. The sulphides also impair hot forming. Cold forming is only possible to a limited extent owing to the sulphide precipitations. The cutting properties are markedly better than those of the low-sulphur 13% and 17% chromium steel grades owing to the high sulphur content.

Notes on use
REMANIT 4104 is preferably used for the metal-cutting manufacture of relatively small parts, such as screws, nuts, shafts, journals and other machine parts which are not subject to any particular corrosion stress, e.g. in water meters, gas meters and switchgear.

REMANIT 4122 is primarily used with a quenched and tempered strength of 750 to 950 N/mm2. In order to achieve higher strengths up to 1700 N/mm2, tempering temperatures up to max. 500 C must be selected. REMANIT 4122 can be partially hardened; stress-relieving at 150 to 200 C is necessary after hardening. Metal-cutting machining is the same as that for special structural steel grades of corresponding strength. REMANIT 4122 can be polished.
Welding
Only limited weldability using the manual arc and TIG welding processes, as hardening occurs in the heat-affected zone. Preheat: 300 to 400 C. Filler metals: Identical Thermanit 1740 Similar 1720 Owing to the hardening of the heat-affected zone, tempering or preferably renewed quenching and tempering of the workpiece after welding is necessary.
Notes on use
Owing to the addition of molybdenum, REMANIT 4122 possesses broader chemical resistance compared to 17% chromium steel grades, although this only comes completely into effect with smoothed or industrially polished surfaces. Owing to its good wear and erosion resistance, REMANIT 4122 is used in pump shafts, fitting and compressor parts, as well as steam and water control valves and boat shafts for use in fresh water. Use in salt water is only possible with cathodic protection.

The material may be slightly magnetisable in quenched condition. The higher the degree of cold forming, the higher the magnetisability. The possibilities for cold forming REMANIT 4301 are very good. The considerably greater strain hardening compared to plain steel grades demands correspondingly higher forming forces. In general, the regulations set out in AD Data Sheet HP7/3 should be complied with during cold and hot forming, as well as any heat aftertreatment. The annealing colours or scaling occurring during hot forming or welding impair the corrosion resistance. They must be removed by pickling, grinding or sand-blasting (iron-free!). Metal-cutting machining has to be performed with tools made of high-quality high-speed steel (good cooling necessary), or preferably carbide cutting tools, owing to the strain hardening and the low thermal conductivity. The nickel content of this steel grade - which is approx. 2% higher than that of REMANIT 4301 results in higher austenite stability. The resultant considerable reduction in the tendency towards strain hardening permits better cold formability by means of cold heading or cold pressing, for example. The annealing colours or scaling occurring during hot forming or welding impair the corrosion resistance. They must be removed by pickling, grinding or sand-blasting (iron-free!). Metal-cutting machining has to be performed with tools made of high-quality, high-speed steel (good cooling necessary), or preferably carbide cutting tools. REMANIT 4303 can be polished.

The material may be slightly magnetisable in quenched condition. The higher the degree of cold forming, the higher the magnetisability. REMANIT 4305 is processed almost exclusively by means of metal-cutting. As with other austenitic steel grades, tools made of high-quality, high-speed steel or carbide cutting tools are necessary. Attention must be paid to good cooling. Owing to the addition of sulphur, short-brittle chips are obtained from REMANIT 4305 during metal-cutting, meaning that automatic machines can be used. Welding
REMANIT 4305 cannot be welded owing to its susceptibility to welding cracks caused by the high sulphur content.
Notes on use
The cutting properties of REMANIT 4305 are considerably improved by the addition of sulphur; this makes this material particularly suitable for the manufacture of turned parts on automatic machines. However, the addition of sulphur reduces the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance can be markedly improved whilst retaining the cutting properties by adding titanium. Please consult us in this regard.

REMANIT 4313 is usually supplied in three tempering levels. Hot and cold forming in quenched and tempered condition is not envisaged. If forming is necessary, we recommend that you consult our quality office. The annealing colours or scaling occurring during welding impair the corrosion resistance. They must be removed by pickling, grinding or sand-blasting (iron-free!). Metal-cutting machining is the same as that for alloyed special structural steel grades of corresponding strength. REMANIT 4313 can be polished.
Welding
Good weldability using the manual arc, TIG and submerged-arc welding processes. Filler metals: Identical Thermanit 13/04 More highly alloyed 17/06
Preheating: To 100 to 150 C for identical weld fillers over 10 mm wall thickness. Always to approx. 150 C if using 17/06. Renewed tempering corresponding to the condition of the parent material is recommended after welding.
Notes on use
Owing to its good strength and toughness properties, together with its good corrosion resistance and reliable weldability, REMANIT 4313 is used for parts in fittings and pump construction subjected to high mechanical stress, for compressors and turbines in hydroelectric stations, as well as in crude oil and refrigerating systems.

Soft annealing in the sense of ferrite formation is not possible. REMANIT 4418 is usually supplied in two tempering levels. During any heat treatment, it must be noted that, when cooling from temperatures above 600 C, the formation of martensite does not start until below 200 C and that it may not be completed at room temperature. It is thus recommendable to deep-freeze to approx. - 50 C, or at least to store for several hours at room temperature, before tempering. The temperature range between 420 and 550 C should be avoided or passed through as quickly as possible owing to embrittlement at 475 C. Metal-cutting machining is perfectly possible if the high strength is taken into account. Good weldability using the manual arc, TIG and submerged-arc welding processes. Filler metals: Identical Thermanit 17/06 Preheating: 100 to 200 C Cool to room temperature after welding and then temper to the appropriate level, or preferably quench and temper again.

Notes on use
The application possibilities of REMANIT 4418 are characterised by its good corrosion behaviour, its high strength with good toughness properties down to - 60 C and its reliable weldability. REMANIT 4418 is used for highly-stressed parts in fittings and pump construction, for compressors and turbines in hydroelectric stations, and for general mechanical engineering parts for refrigerating systems. REMANIT 4418 is also used for ship shafts.

REMANIT 4462 can be cold and hot formed. Renewed heat treatment is necessary after hot forming. Cold forming can be carried out at room temperature; heat treatment must also be carried out after cold forming of more than 10%. The tendency of this steel grade towards strain hardening is lower than that of austenitic chromium-nickel steel grades, although it requires greater forming forces. A bright metallic surface, such as can be achieved by pickling, is a prerequisite for good corrosion resistance. Metal-cutting machining is possible in the range of parameters used for austenitic steel grades, although REMANIT 4462 displays a lesser tendency towards smearing. REMANIT 4462 can be polished. If none of the heat treatment conditions named is expressly stated in the order, REMANIT 4542 is supplied in solution-annealed condition. Soft annealing in the sense of ferrite formation is not possible. During any heat treatment, it must be noted that, when cooling from temperatures above 600 C, the formation of martensite does not start until below 200 C and that it may not be completed at room temperature. It is thus recommendable to deep-freeze to approx. - 50 C, or at least to store for several hours at room temperature, before ageing. REMANIT 4542 has good metal-cutting properties. The cutting properties are improved further by double ageing: 2 hours at 760 C and 4 hours at 620 C. The material must be solution-annealed and aged under defined conditions after machining.

The possibilities for cold forming REMANIT 4563 are very good. The considerably greater strain hardening compared to plain steel grades demands correspondingly higher forming forces. The annealing colours or scaling occurring during hot forming or welding impair the corrosion resistance. They must be removed by pickling, grinding or sand-blasting (iron-free!). Metal-cutting machining has to be performed with tools made of high-quality, high-speed steel (good cooling necessary), or preferably carbide cutting tools, owing to the strain hardening and the low thermal conductivity. REMANIT 4563 can be polished.

Good weldability using all processes (except gas welding). Filler metals: More highly alloyed Thermanit 30/40E Max. working temperature (interpass temperature): 150 C. Heat treatment after welding is not necessary.
Notes on use
The resistance of REMANIT 4563 to intercrystalline corrosion, even in welded condition, is ensured by the low carbon content. REMANIT 4563 is resistant to intercrystalline corrosion during continuous operation at up to 400 C. The high chromium, nickel and molybdenum contents afford REMANIT 4563 better resistance to media containing chloride, as well as oxidising and reducing acids. The addition of copper increases the resistance to sulphuric solutions. REMANIT 4563 is a very stable austenite which is resistant to stress corrosion cracking. REMANIT 4563 is a material for particularly critical applications in the chemical industry, for rock phosphate digestion and the manufacture and processing of sulphuric acid. Its high resistance to pitting makes it suitable for applications in marine systems, such as seawater desalination plants or seawater-cooled heat exchangers, and as a material for pipes transporting acid gases.

Notes on use
REMANIT 4565 is a highly nitrogen-alloyed, fully austenitic special steel grade, which displays excellent corrosion resistance in a host of corrosive media, as well as great strength. The high nitrogen content results in a stable austenitic structure, high strength and extraordinary resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, in both quenched and welded condition. REMANIT 4565 is particularly recommended for use in the construction of chemical apparatus, in the pulp and paper industry, and for the transport and storage of key chemicals. REMANIT 4565 is suitable for installations in flue-gas desulphurisation and seawater treatment plants, as well as in fields with comparable requirements. The high resistance to chlorine-induced pitting and crevice corrosion permits use in the extraction and transport of crude oil and natural gas under both offshore and onshore conditions.

Embrittlement
With THERMAX 4713 and its relatively low Cr content, embrittlment occurs at temperatures above approx. 950 C due to ferrite grain growth. This embrittlement cannot be eliminated. Only use electric welding as far as possible. The weldability is good. In general, no heat treatment is necessary after welding; stress-relief annealing for 30 to 45 minutes at 750 C to 800 C with subsequent air-cooling is recommended for parts with widely differing cross-sections or after intensive cold forming. Embrittlement
Embrittlement due to ferrite grain growth also occurs when heating THERMAX 4762 to temperatures over approx. 950 C. This embrittlement cannot be eliminated. Another area of brittleness is the temperature range between 400 and 550 C (475 C embrittlement). Lengthy heating or slow cooling in this temperature range should be avoided. This embrittlement can be eliminated by briefly heating to temperatures between 700 and 800 C. In the temperature range between 600 and 900 C, THERMAX 4762 displays a tendency towards -phase embrittlement, meaning that the toughness properties are greatly reduced after relatively long use in this temperature range. Therefore, THERMAX 4762 should not be used in this temperature range. If embrittlement nonetheless occurs, it can be eliminated by heating to temperatures above 1000 C.
Welding
