The Lieutenant Governors Award for Excellence in Ontario Wines

2012 Buying Guide


Ontarios wine appellations produce rich and bountiful grape harvests that result in world-class products. Established in 2011, the Lieutenant Governors Award for Excellence in Ontario Wines profiles and promotes the superb quality, expertise, and creativity of our provinces wineries. The competition is open to all VQA wines and celebrates the best of per competition, regardless of vintage or varietal. Each year, up to twelve wines are selected for their sheer excellence, standing out among all others.

Cave Spring Cellars Cave Spring Blanc de Blancs Brut Sparkling Wine A dry, Brut-style sparkling wine with aromas of apple, pear, bread dough, and wet stones. Medium in body, the palate bursts forth with a vivacious mousse and a seductive kiss of sweetness. Flat Rock Cellars Flat Rock Sparkling Brut 2007 This is a lively wine with a great backbone of acidity. The citrus and berry fruit aromas are combined with a minerality and developed bread and biscuit characters. Inniskillin Winery Inniskillin Riesling Icewine 2008 This Riesling icewine shows the elegance of tropical aromas and flavoursof lemon and lime. It allows for a refreshing mouth amid the many layers of flavours tha unfold. Great with lemon based desserts or tarts along with fresh fruit-based desserts. Konzelmann Estate Winery Konzelmann Vidal Icewine 2010 Sweet tangerine, zesty lemon, and decadent honey aromas lift from this rich dessert wine. A balancing acidity greets the dense, smooth palate, coating sweetness along with flavours of candied pear, peac, and orange zest. Stoney Ridge Cellars Stoney Ridge Excellence Chardonnay 2010 An elegant and full-bodied white wine, integrated with French and American oak, with balanced and refreshing acidity. Upon tasting, there are beautiful notes of butterscotch and citrus.

Tawse Winery Tawse Sketches of Niagara Riesling 2010 This Riesling has wonderful flvour development while the nose shows intense citrus, especially ripe white grapefruit. On the palate, the fruitiness is complemented by mouth-watering acidity and a subtle, yet distinct minerality. Thirty Bench Winery Thirty Bench Riesling 2011 A light to medium-bodied Riesling with flavours of peach, lemo drop, pink grapefruit, lime, and apple. The beautiful finishof lemon, tangerine, and mineral leaves one feeling very refreshed.

Kacaba Vineyards Kacaba Vineyards Meritage Reserve 2007 Full-bodied and complex with an array of aromas ranging from dried fruit, black liquorice, and espresso. Bold flavous envelop the palate with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, and cracked black pepper. Malivoire Wine Company Malivoire Courtney Gamay 2010 On the nose, fragrances of dark cherry mingle with those of blueberry, raspberry, cola, eucalyptus, and juniper. The texture is firm ad intense, while flavours poin to sour cherry, strawberry, blackberry, plum jam, dried olive, and the caramel hints of toasted oak.
