Havlin; Erez, K; BenAvraham, D; Havlin, S (2001), Internet can be refer to a set of network that connected the computers and other devices with each other by using an appropriate network protocol. The network protocol that been used in the Internet is Internet Protocol called Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). This protocol will be used so that the public can access the Internet anywhere and anytime. Due to the evolution of Internet applications, there are more peoples are using Internet application in their life. The internet application can be used in academic institution, government, private sector, entertainment and so on. Furthermore, the evolutions of wireless technologies make the internet usage become more commons in today society. Normally, the public or users will use the Internet for the communication purposes. Among the activities that will be done by them are online chatting, file transfer, and file sharing. R. Cohen, K. Erez, D. ben-Avraham, S. Havlin; Erez, K; Ben-Avraham, D; Havlin, S (2001) explained that the users will use the web browser like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox to access the Internet via the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). As been explained by Patricia M. Thornton (2003), hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) can be described as a set of rules that allow the data transferring by using the World Wide Web (WWW). The transferred data refer to text, graphic, images, sound, video and other multimedia elements. Commonly, the discussion in this paper will concentrate and focus on the benefits and detrimental of the Internets on the users especially students. As for the first part of the discussion, it will focus on the benefits of the Internets to the students and second parts of the paper will discuss on the detrimental of the Internet of the Internet. Then, the solution will be provided and discussed in this paper in order to ensure the detrimental of the Internet can be solved so that Internet will able to provide maximum effectiveness to the students in the process of learning. At the end of the paper, a constructive conclusion on the usages of Internet by the students will be included.
2.0 The Benefits of Internets on Students As in this part of paper, the discussion will be focused on the benefits of Internets on the students especially helping them in the process of learning in the academic institution. Each benefits of the Internet on students will be discussed in detail: (A) Information Searching As for the first benefit of the Internet on students is allowing the students to do the information searching. As we know, information always the most important elements in the process of teaching and learning in the class. The students will not able to complete the assignments or project if he or she was not provided any information on the topics. Thus, Batthyny, D.; Mller, K.W.; Benker, F.; Wlfling, K. (2009 ) explained that the information searching will be always the first efforts that should be taken by the students before can start to do their course works or assignments. Internet application will be a useful tool for the students to search the information that they are needed via lots of online sources. Among the online sources are online library, articles, magazines, conference paper and magazines. For the example, ACM, IEEE and Emerald are the well known online journal and article sources. Thus, it can save lots of time for the students to search the information. Besides that, the students will able to use the Internet application to search the information that needed anytime and anywhere. It is much better compare to the conventional information searching method. It is because the students might not be able to search the information at library during non office hour like night time. Besides that, the articles and journals in the library are not as updated as the online sources. Normally, it will take more than 6 months to one year for the new articles and journals to reach the library from oversea. Lastly, the information that contained in the online library or journal databases are more than the journals or articles that owned by the library. Therefore, the information searching process by using the online sources are much comprehensive compare to the conventional information searching method. It is simply more flexible and complete compare to the conventional information searching method.
(B) Lifelong learning As been explained by Aspin, David N. & Chapman, Judith D. (2007), lifelong learning is refer to the process of ongoing, voluntary and self-motivated pursuit knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. Unquestionable, Education Ministry of Malaysia is encouraging the people to involve in lifelong learning. As for today, there are more established lifelong learning center like Open University of Malaysia (OUM), University Wawasan Malaysia and University Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI). However, it is not easy for the citizen especially working adults to pursuit their Diploma, Bachelor or Master by using the lifelong learning concepts. It is because the time limitation that faced by the working adults in the lifelong learning. According to R. Cohen, K. Erez, D. ben-Avraham, S. Havlin; Erez, K; Ben-Avraham, D; Havlin, S (2001), one of the most beneficial solution that provided by the lifelong learning center like Open University Malaysia (OUM) is establish a constructive and systematic long distance learning system for the working adults. By using the long distance learning method like MyLMS forum, the working adults can perform their lifelong learning anytime and anywhere. It is part of the contribution from the Internet application whereby the long distance learning system like MyLMS forum is one of the online learning systems. Therefore, the effectiveness of the long distance learning is depends on the uses of Internet application by the academic institution. For the example, the Open University Malaysia (OUM) students will use Internet application to access the online MyLMS forum via the web browser like Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. Therefore, it will encourage more working adult to do their online learning via the lifelong center like Open University Malaysia (OUM).
3.0 The Detrimental of Internets on Students Unquestionable, the Internet is very useful to the students especially in the process of teaching and learning. It is because the solutions and applications of the Internet can bring lots of benefits to the students. However, over use of the Internet applications and solutions will also harmful to the students especially affecting their learning. Due to that, this part of paper will discuss in detail the detrimental of the Internet on the students. Each detrimental and disadvantages of the Internet to the students will be discussed in detail in this part of paper.
(A) Negative Influence from the Internet According to the explanation from Marchand A. Donald, Kettinger J. William, Rollins D. John (2001), the uses of Internet can bring lots of negative impacts to the students. It is because the students might spend too much time on the uses of Internet and neglect their studies. For the example, the students will be addicted to the uses of online social network like Facebook and cause them not paying attention and efforts in their studies. This will directly affect their academic performance in school. According to the explanation from Downs, C. (2008), more youngster are spend more than 4 hours per day in using the online social network like Facebook. They simply cannot live without Facebook. Besides that, the students will be easily influenced and affected by those negative elements like pornography and punk culture that separated via the Internet sources. Once the students are influenced by the pornography and punk culture, they will lost their focus or concentration in the studies. Therefore, it will seriously affect the students academic performance in school. Thus, the usage of Internet application can become the detrimental to the students.
(B) Affect the Communication Ability of the Students As been explained by Batthyny, D.; Mller, K.W.; Benker, F.; Wlfling, K. (2009), communication always play an important role in the process of teaching and learning in school. It is because the students will need to perform the communication skill in communicated with the lecturers and other courses mate in the process of learning. For the example, the students will need to use an appropriate communicate method to communicate with the teacher in asking them certain questions that related to the studies and learning. As for the example, the students are required to use an appropriate communication skill during asking the questions to the teacher in the school in order to ensure that the teacher will understand the exact meaning of him or her. On the other hand, the students are required to post a good communication skill during their group discussion activities whereby the students will need to discuss with each other in produce a good and effective discussion outcome to be presented in the classroom. However, the problem of over use in the Internet application will affect the daily life of the students including the communication skills. It is because they spend too much time in front of the computer and do not keep in touch with other people until they had lost their communication skill to communicate with other people in the classroom. Therefore, we can conclude that the over uses in Internet application be detrimental for the students.
4.0 The Suggestion to overcome the Detrimental As discussed in last section, there is various kind of detrimental that will be brought by the uses of Internet on the students. Unquestionable, these detrimental will seriously affect the academic performance of the students in the school. Due to that, four constructive solutions will be suggested in order to overcome the detrimental that might bring by the uses of Internet on the students. (A) Guide the students in using the Internet The first proposed solution is the teacher and parents must provide proper guidance to the students throughout the process of using the Internet. This guidance is very important and critical as many students are easily influenced by the negative elements from the Internet while they are using it. The parents and teacher will guide the students so that they will only use the Internet applications for good purposes and not others unhealthy purposes. Besides that, the teachers in school must educate the students on the dangerous and harmful for the over uses in Internet application. For the example, the parents and teacher can tell the students that there are many people are suffer the problem of backaches when they are over use the computer in the office or school. On the other hand, the parents must also control their children so that not over use the Internet application until neglect their studies. In other words, the parents should control the time that spent by the children in using Internet application in a day. (B) Cyber Content Control As for the second suggested solution, the government of Malaysia should control the cyber content before reach to the youngster in Malaysia via the online method. Those negative and unhealthy cyber contents like pornography and others from over sea should be banned and allow accessed by the local citizen through the Internet services provider (ISP) like Streamyx and Digi. Higher and better security features must be implemented in the Internet gateway of the mentioned Internet Services Provider (ISP) so that the users can be controlled by the configuration that done on the Internet gateway.
(C) Control Cyber Caf Activities According to the explanation from Batthyny, D.; Mller, K.W.; Benker, F.; Wlfling, K. (2009), most of the students will prefer to play an online games like DOTA at cyber caf. He explained that most of the children will spend more than 2 hours at cyber caf to play the online games. Due to that, the government or local council should take further actions to control the cyber caf activities especially during school time. For the example, police can do the spot check on the Cyber caf from time to time especially during the school time. Those cyber caf that are found that consists of school children during school time will be penalized. On the other hand, the enforcement unit must allow any illegal cyber caf operating. This is aim to control the numbers of cyber caf that operating in certain area. It is believed that can reduce the involvement of the school children in playing the online games.
(D) Enforce Cyber Law As for the last solution, it is proposed that the government should enforce the cyber law strictly. It is important to against those people who are involve in separate the negative influence in the cyber world. For the example, those parties or people who are found guilty in separate or distributed any unhealthy elements via online will be charged based on the cyber law. They can be either fine or jailed or both. It is to control the distribution of the negative elements among the people in Malaysia.
5.0 Conclusion As a conclusion, Internet can be very useful and important in our daily life especially helping us to get better results in our academic performance. The evolution of the Internet technology like wireless technology make the Internet become more common in our daily life. Most of the people will use the Internet for various kinds of reason like entertainment, education, working, and so on. Unquestionable, the uses of Internet did provide the students lots of benefits like flexible and effective in information searching as well as able to perform the lifelong learning via the online long distance learning. Most of the working adults will use the online application like MyLMS to perform the long distance learning. Thus, it will encourage more people especially working adults to involve in the lifelong learning. However, there are still plenty of weaknesses that can be brought by the uses of Internet application. Among the weaknesses are students will spend too much time in Internet and it will affect their studies. Apart of that, the negative elements like pornography and punk culture from the Internet will influence the students and causing them lacking of concentration on their studies. Due to that, four solutions had been proposed in order to overcome these detrimental of the Internet. The four solutions that are proposed are include cyber content control via Internet gateway configuration, control the involvement of the students in the cyber caf activities like playing online games, enforce the cyber law especially to against those people who are purposely separate the negative elements like pornography in Malaysia, and parents should providing proper guidance to the students along the process of using the Internet application. By implement these four solutions, it is hope that the uses of Internet application can bring more advantages and benefits to the students compare to the detrimental. Therefore, every single party in the society like parents, teachers and governments should cooperate with each other to control the over uses of Internet application among the students so that their studies will not be affected.
