price of Askari Bank has remained approximately 12% higher than the average share price of quoted banks during the last four years. Askari Bank is principally engaged in the business of banking as defined in the Banking Companies Ordinance, 1962. As at December 31, 2002 the Bank had total assets of PKR 70.313 billion, with over 250000 banking customers. Askari Bank is the only bank with its operational Head Office in the twin cities of Rawalpindi-Islamabad, which have relatively limited opportunities as compared to Karachi and Lahore. This created its own challenges and opportunities, and forced us to evolve an outward-looking strategy in terms of our market emphasis. As a result, we developed a geographically diversified assets base instead of a concentration and heavy reliance on business in the major commercial centers of Karachi and Lahore, where most other banks have their operational Head Offices.

DESCRIPTION / NATURE OF THE JOBS PERFORMED BY ME

24

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

This section is based on my observations, experience & rotation during my internship at SHEIKHUPURA BRANCH of ASKARI BANK LIMITED. Here I worked for the 8 weeks of my internship program i.e. from 1st FEB, 2012 to 31st MARCH, 2012. The jobs which I performed in the bank are done in the different departments & the details are given as under:

PROVIDE BANK STATEMENT:

Bank statement, also known as account statement which is provided to the client on his request, by the bank. When a customer needs his account statement he fills a request form & gives that to me, I get his signature verified by a senior and then check his account details, than I provide him the bank statement in a printed form.

MAINTAING REGISTERS:
I also have maintained the registers of account opening, mails, etc. every time when the customer opens the account or when any mail which is to be received & sent by the bank I post the entries & get it signed by the senior officer of the bank.

ENDOW WITH INFORMATION:

While working in a customer department my main duty was to provide the customer, their desired information. When someone wants the account information, they can come directly or call me. If a customer needs to know about his account details or his balance left, I entered his account number & give him his desired information, but sometimes some customer did not know there

25

account number or had forgotten than I search there account by their name, & confirm their mailing address. If the customer is valid I give their account information to them.

FILLING SLIPS:
During my stay at the bank I got to fill the cheques, deposit slips, online slips & credit card payment slips of the customers who were not literate enough or needed instructions & I also got the opportunity to give advice to the customers regarding the requirements of account opening.

CUSTOMER VERIFICATION REPORT:

Here I also got a duty of preparing CVR (Customer Verification Report) on every account opening request. For this I take the phone number of the customer from the account opening form & then call them & confirm their home & mailing address. After that I fill the customer verification report & get it signed by a senior officer.

INWARD CLEARING:
In inward clearing NIFT (National Institutional Facilitation Technologies) provide cheques collected from different bank for clearing. I posted the cheques after verifying signatures from SSC (Specimen of Signature Card) & cheking all the essential ingredients of the cheque. Cheque with some material alteration, disagreement of signature, insufficient balance, & stop payment marked as return. After posting all the cheques , I prepared the cheque the cheque return memo & after due stamp stamp &

signature, I took two copies each cheque with return memo & keep it in record & then prepare a bundle cover for return cheques & put put all the cheques with memo in NIFT bag. After wards a computer based jotting of inward cheques posted is generated & all original inward instruments are put in record with jotting number of instruments are put in record with jotting number of instrument & total amount. Then an advice is generated by me named as CREDIT ADVICE in which we advice our head office to debit & credit the STATE BANK account.

Then original instruments are stamped of clearing at front & from back payees account credited & gets the signatures of the authorized person. Outstation cheques are categorized under two heads, INTERCITY &OUTWARD BILLS OR COLLECTION. For those cities where NIFT provides services, cheques are considered intercity & for those cities where NIFT did not provide services, cheques are considered as OBC. All outstation cheques are entered in collection register & after entries for intercity cheques. On face stamp of clearing & intercity is required & at the back payees account credited duly signed. After stamping, separate NIFT bundle cover is prepared for each city & placed in different envelops with name of city. For OBC, an OBC form is filled by me in the name of relevant branch & after due signatures it is attached with original instrument containing the stamp of OBC at front & payees account will be credited at back, it is placed in an envelope having the address by me. 36

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH:
As English is an international language, so it is of no less importance. Every student who steps in a professional life should not only be fluent in English but he should also be aware of business colloquialisms which we had studied in Functional English. It helps us to understand & communicate easily with our seniors & other persons in the business field.

HOW DO I APPLY MY KNOWLEDGE FROM CLASSES?

39

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

I applied some of my knowledge from classes in this organization in the following ways: While working in the customer relationship department a job was given to me to make a letter for those customers whose account balance is nil. I had to give them the last warning that if they didnt deposit any amount within a week we have to close their account. This was not a difficult job for me as I had already studied how to make a business letter in my BUSINESS PRESENTATION SKILLS classes. I also had to copy the same letter & print it out. All this work was done on the computer so this was also a very easy task for me as I had already studied the computer application course in my B.COM (HONS) program. In the operation department when the pin codes are received I had to enter that in the system, on software called MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL. In my computer application classes Madam. Ayesha taught us how to work on it, so it was not a thorny job for me. I did it swiftly & I also enjoyed doing it.

THE WEAKEST AREAS OF PERFORMANCE OF THE COMPANY OBSERVED

41

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

Some of the weakest areas of performance of the company which I observed are the following:

LACK OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

In ASKARI BANK LIMITED I have noticed the requirement of job portrayal. Many employees of the bank dont exactly know what & how much work they actually have to do.

NO CLEAR CUT RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

I had observed that there were no clear cut responsibilities & duties. I found some workers of the bank irresponsible & sluggish.

LACK OF OWNERSHIP OF WORK:

Many employees of the bank were not willing to take any responsibility of the work just because of lack of job description. Many people working in the bank want others to do the work for them. In short I observed lack of ownership of work.

LACK OF COORDINATION:
There is a need of coordination between co-workers. If the workers of the bank dont corporate with each other than it will be difficulties for the bank to excel. The main reason of insolvency of any organization is the lack of coordination between co-workers & department.
42

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

NO CLEAR ORGANIZATION OBJECTIVES:

There was no clear organization objective. This makes difficult for the employees to work more efficiently & effectively to reach the desired goals of the organization.

43

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

THE MAJOR COMPETITORS OF THE COMPANY & HOW I RANK THE COMPANY AGAINST ITS COMPETITORS

44

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

ASKARI BANK LIMITED is the only private sector bank that has been approved by the WORLD BANK as a PARTICIPATING FINANCIAL INSTITUTION for the USS 200 million line of credit sanctioned to the Government of Pakistan for the Financial Sector Deepening & International Project. So due to the great achievements it has many competitors and the named are as follows. HBL (Habib Bank Limited) MCB (Muslim Commercial Bank) UBL (United Bank Limited) BOP (Bank Of Punjab) AL FALLAH BANK LIMITED

Talking about ASKARI BANK, network of the bank is big & there is clear cut policy for expansion. Further the organization have the competitive edge with regards to monitoring as well as human resources though the equity injected is in billion of rupees, and the bank utilize it in a proper way also. As at December 31, 2011 the Bank had total assets of PKR 70.313 billion (approx), with over 250000 banking customers. With regards to rating, I rank this organization as a mediocre organization having a wide score of expansion.

45

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

THE FUTURE PROSPECTS OF ASKARI BANK IN MY ESTIMATION

46

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

As this organization is having an equity of as at December 31, 2011 the Bank had total assets of PKR 70.313 billion (approx), with over 250000 banking customers. And the bank is utilizing its huge amount in a proper way as per the chock out policies, which is giving an organization a break through to expand nationally & internationally too. While talking about acting on the policies of the bank there is a famous saying: You can lead a horse to water But You cannot make it drink As consumer banking & Islamic banking is very hot debate in banking industry so bank is able to excel in these two major categories of banking. As we take a view on the mission & vision of the askari bank so they are doing a lot of hardworking on it. If they work like that and dont make a break so I think that the ASKARI BANK will be bank of first choice in the region. INSHALLAH

THE PERSON I MOST ADMIRE IN THIS ORGANIZATION

48

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

The person I most admire in ASKARI BANK BRANCH SHEIKHUPURA is Mr.Zeeshan Abdullah. He had done Msc(Economics) from Punjab University Lahore. He is working as an Accounts Opening Officer & ATM Incharge I had worked with him & as a person I found him very nice, intelligent & corporative. 49

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

SWOT ANALYSIS SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats)

50

INTERNSHIP REPORT | PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

The analysis of ASKARI BANK LIMITED is described below

STRENGTH:
ASKARI BANK LIMITED has got a well-developed on-line system in most of its branches. Remittance Department is working very efficiently in transferring the funds of people due to this system. The bank has also started ATM facility in most of its branches. 24-hour banking is new trend in Pakistan and Askari Bank Limited has also taken apart in this trend. One distinctive feature of the bank is that it is the only bank working for the welfare of army officers, which was established by Army Welfare Trust. The productivity of the bank is very good. Bank is providing a high quality service to its customers. ASKARI BANK LIMITED has strength that most of the imports & exports are to be done through it,

WEAKNESSES:
ASKARI BANK LIMITED has lesser number of branches as compared to many other branches. Due to this problem, army officers can not avail the benefits of their own bank. The human resource department is not performing the function of selection and recruitment very effectively. Selection process is not on merit due to which competent persons cannot be selected. Bank is not introducing new products and new saying schemes. Bank should boost the product development and increase the range of facilities offered for customers. Bank is weak in its credit management. Bank should lend to very sound parties and increase its payment rate.

OPPORTUNITIES:
Govt. is taking very bold steps to promote IT in Pakistan. ASKARI BANK LIMITED has an opportunity to improve in technology. Stock exchange is very volatile and takes immediate effect. So, in the time of crises, conservative investors return to saving deposits. ASKARI BANK LIMITED is surrounded by many competitors. It has an opportunity to do aggressive marketing to increase its business.

THREATS:
ASKARI BANK LIMITED has many competitors, which are continuously increasing its products and marketing aggressively. It may cause its customers to shift to competitors. Some other banks have competent taskforce, which is also a threat for ASKARI BANK LIMITED. Because human resource is the most valuable resource.

FINANCIAL / COST MANAGEMENT

As per ratio analysis of the balance sheet Administrative cost is increased by the same ratio with which other income increased. Administrative cost of the branch is very high. Abuse of the stationery & telephonic service provided by the bank & personal use of the stationery & other facilities. All these should be decreased to decrease the administrative cost. Strong policies regarding issuance & delivery of equipment & services for the staff should be recommended. Strong administrative control is required to cope with the situation.

EMPLOYEE RELATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT

No clear cut policies are available for the well fair & development of employee. No regular training is conducted. Employees are not encouraged to excel further in academic & professional fields. Healthy relations should be maintain between the staff & HR, make employee realize that their services are paid equitably. There should be regular training program, employees should be encouraged to do extremely well & excel further in both academic & professional fields.

CONSUMER RELATIONS AND MARKETING

An old proverb says: Customer is the sovereign king And this policy is followed in this branch. Customers requirements are catered properly as per their requirements. Now as the competition is very stiff among banks, every bank is having consumer relations as a competitive etch, to become a market leader. Customers requirements should be carried properly but prudence on the part of the banker should not be lack at any point.

There are three levels of making a product. First you offer a product or services which are currently required by customer. Second you foresee future requirements of customer & develop a product or services. Thirdly you develop a product or service which even customer cannot think of. ASKARI BANK should increase its product & services to attract the target market & it can do this by offering an entirely new product or services.

GROWTH OF SALES AND PROFITABILITY

To increase profit first of all organization has to control its selling & administrative expense at this level organization should differentiate between direct & indirect cost. FOR INSTANCE: A foreign bank was given a target to increase its sale by 100% & decrease their expanses, for this they had decreases their telephonic cost by 50% as it was their direct cost so it gave a negative effect. Instead of increasing their sales decreased. Strong promotional campaign is required by the bank to make a customer feel that this is the right place of the fulfillment of their needs. Cash flow of any organization plays a vital role here only profitability cannot guarantee the survival of the organization.

FOR INSTANCE: Britain Airways was a profit showing organization, but they do not have the cash flow to meet its short term liquidity requirements, due to this reason the company was bank corrupted.

SOCIAL / ENVIRONMENT RESPONSIBILITY

As now the era of marketing is so wide-ranging so the role of organization is not only limited to delivering products or services but to ensure that the society as a whole is not disturbed by any activity initiated by the organization.

FOR INSTANCE: LEAD PETROL: It is good for engine efficiency & also very profitable for oil companies but not sold by the oil companies because it causes cancer, ASBESTOS STORES: It was used by constructions companies, it is very cost effective but they dont use it anymore because of the same reason, it causes cancer.

They are also encountering to overcome. Now a days banks provide us many facilities now nothing is difficult to get even a lower income person can get everything on very low charges by leasing facility of bank. The system of management in ASKARI BANK LIMITED is very efficient. All the policies & strategies make at the top level & filtered down to lower staff. The entire workers are very cooperative & hard working. Therefore ASKARI BANK LIMITED created its image in the mind of their customers on a very short period. During this period in spite of some difficulties I learned more, even some time the instructor were very busy & could not guide me. Sometime I feel like an employee when I worked with this determination. In short it was a very nice period.
