The first winner in the Goldsmith Centre InnoTech Awards, co-sponsored by Gazelle Local, is Mill End Nursery from Rushden, Hertfordshire. This nursery is owned by Conor and Jackie OGorman and is open to both trade and public customers offering a wide range of trees, shrubs and plants. Mill End Nursery is a long established, family-run business and was acquired by the OGormans in 2011. Set on a 6 acre site their key concern for cost control was their use of water. Conor OGorman said: The nursery is currently watered via sprinklers and hose pipes and during the peak season the plants are continuously being watered, to ensure the quality of the plant is of the standard which Mill End Nursery requires. Therefore, this high use of water has an impact on our profits. We monitored our water bills over the last two years and decided that there had to be a more efficient way to capture and use this finite resource. The InnoTech project will now review and develop a recyclable rain water table from which the plants can be tended. The benefits to the business are obvious; sustainable use of water in a growing environment, a more efficient use of water and considerably lower utility bills. Since acquiring the nursery many improvements have been introduced which will help the trade and gardener alike, including a new website which shows stock availability and stock overview. There have also been open evenings for traders, fund raising activities, student work experience, visits from horticulture college students, the opening of a coffee bar at peak season and extended opening hours during the key growing period, as well as extensive investment in the modernisation of the nursery.
We were delighted with the initial response to this prestigious Award and appreciate that there are many companies developing innovative ideas that have long-term benefits to the global marketplace. We will be supporting them with management data and business planning development.
