Project ASK Month ASK Month!

Welcome- Project ASK Month!
Dear Members, September is a very important month to many children with cancer. This month is known as Project ASK Month. During the year, Project ASK hosts many events in hopes of raising awareness and resources to help children with cancer and their families. If you want to attend any of the events like putt-putt golf, rock-climbing marathon, Gala, and many more fun things, you can look on the Project ASK website http://askweb.org/ under "ASK events," then "events listings." There are many ways chapters can help Project ASK grow and flourish. You can raise awareness at your county fairs or festivals, host monetary fundraisers, or help with their Wish list (available under How You Can Help). If you have an idea that you do not see on the website, you can ask Debra Abney at dabney@askweb.org. An example of a new idea is a toy drive of brand new toys in November and then delivery to a Project ASK holiday party. Remember that every little thing can help because when a child has cancer, the whole family has cancer. Also we would like to send out congratulations to the following reactivated chapters: Virginia Western Community College, George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University! Welcome Back! Child Life Program and Events

ASK's Child Life Program is run by a full-time Child Life Therapist who works in the ASK Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. The program's child life therapist and volunteers serve as the children's advocates, helping them maintain contact with their friends back home and celebrating milestones of their childhood. During long hours spent in the clinic, the child life therapist provides supportive intervention, as well as educational and therapeutic play. Children are encouraged to express themselves through play, using toys to demonstrate their feelings about medical treatments and procedures. ASK's Child Life Program strives to provide as many normal life experiences as possible during treatment and offer opportunities for cancer patients and their families to forget about their disease and enjoy life. The organization organizes events such as:

Holiday Party Monthly birthday parties, annual high school graduation ceremonies, and weekly celebrations for successful treatments are ongoing. ASK also partners with Special Love and Smile Buddies for additional social support and activities. All events a free to ASK families. Our Kings Dominion Day and Holiday Party are our biggest events with approximately 300 in attendance at each event.

ASK for Comfort

Throw away those drab hospital gowns! ASK and the VCU School of Fashion Design and Merchandising will be launching a new line of clothing especially designed for children with cancer. VCU fashion design students worked with patients and their parents to create and produce a line of leisure wear garments for use in the hospital. These garments are easily accessible for medical procedures as well as stylish, comfortable and fun for the kids. The clothing will be donated annually to the approximately 75 newly diagnosed children who are going through cancer treatment locally and will be sold nationally.

Fundraisers!
We hope that last month's fundraising ideas gave your chapters some ideas. Fundraisers are a great way to raise money for your local chapter and at the same time, let people know about PBL! Here are some additional fundraising ideas for your chapters: Booths: At special events in your town, setting up a booth can be a great way to get your PBL organization some publicity in the community and a great way to make money for your organization. Bonus task: attract some professional division members at the same time! Peel offs: Are another effective way to make money, but you need to make your presence known with different businesses throughout your community to make this fundraiser a success. Once you have all your businesses, your peel offs will sell like crazy! Raffles: Are a fun and interesting way to raise money. There are different kinds of raffles you can use, one great example is the 50/50 raffle, where half of the money earned is given to the club and the other half goes to the person with the winning raffle ticket.

Project ASK
ASK, or the Association for the support of Children with Cancer, is Virginia PBLs State Service Project for the 2011-2012 school year. ASK is a non-profit association for parents, health professionals, and concerned citizens throughout Virginia. Nothing can prepare you for the words your child has cancer. Its not natural, its not fair, but it really happens. Virginia PBLs Project ASK allows the organization to perform diagnostic research, fund the position for a patient counselor/chaplain, and serve as a support group for families of children with cancer. Nationwide, the numbers add up fast. About five hundred children each month are treated at ASK Pediatric Hematology/Oncology clinics. Each patient, along with the people who know them, need help dealing with the complex issues and anxiety of cancer treatment. Thankfully, a support system is already waiting for them through ASK. Since its founding, ASK has had a simple mission statement that says it all: Making Life Better for Chil-

Motivation
As organizations, or PBL chapters, we can face the a serious problem: recruitment. All Virginia PBL chapters could use a boost in membership. Some successful chapters will start planning before the school year begins. Then, when the semester starts off, they post many flyers and try to talk to as many new students as possible to try to show them what PBL actually has to offer. We constantly find ourselves trying to inform others of what our organization can do for them. Most do not know what they are truly missing until they actually join. Although this can take a lot of hard work, sometimes it just is not enough to convince new or old students with their busy schedules.

We must think, though. Many students do have busy schedules, if not all. They will tell us that they do not have enough time because of their busy school schedule and occasionally will say they have jobs outside of school. They realize what the pros and cons are of attending class and missing class or work. Most understand that they will benefit in the end if they attend class. Do they have time for class and a job? Or do they We must somehow show to possible members the benefits of being a PBL member. If students knew what PBL on their resume, competing in PBLs competitive events,

or attending PBL leadership conferences would do for them, they would know that the benefits last a lifetime and everyone would join. National PBL has provided many valuable resources available to Virginia PBL. We can use this video to show new fer in terms that they will understand. You can even have an informational meeting and show everyone that attends this video! Computer Concepts: This event is done by an individual. It also contains a one hour objective test consisting of: basic computer principles, terminology, hardware, software (applications, operating system, etc.), networking systems and procedures, programming concepts, troubleshooting, and ethics.
Contemporary Sports Issues: This event is done by an individual. This event consists of a one hour objective test consisting of: sports management , intercollegiate athletics, professional sports, sports management and marketing agencies, sports tourism, international sports, sports consumer behavior, public relations, finance and economics in sports industry, sports facility and event management, legal considerations sociological aspects of sports.

Cost

Accounting: This event is done by an individual. This event consists of a one hour objective test and a one hour production test consisting of: (variances, costvolume-profit analysis, cost concepts, cost flows, role of the cost accountant, cost behavior and estimating costs, activity-based cost systems, job costing, process costing, strategic planning and budgeting , decision making, target costing, standard costing, and major pricing models).
Cyber Security: This event is done by an individual. This event consists of a one hour objective test consisting of: computer attacks (e.g., virus, spam, spyware, Trojans, hijackers, and worms), firewalls, intrusion detection, network security, public key, authentication, email security, disaster recovery, forensic security, physical security, and cryptography.

Desktop Publishing: This event can be done by an individual or done by a team consisting of two or three people. The event consists of two parts and objective test and a production test. Objective test: Basic desktop terminology and concepts, related desktop application knowledge, digital imaging and graphics, desktop layout rules and standards, safety, ethics, and legal, print process, message presentation , accuracy, and proofreading. Production test: Documents address topic and are appropriate for the audience, required information is effectively communicated, graphics, text treatment, and special effects show creativity and cohesiveness of design, appropriate selection of fonts and type sizes, overall layout and design is creative and appealing , final product indicates a clear thought process and an intended, planned direction with formulation and execution of a firm idea. *Case studies are as followed: Twenty (20) minutes before the performance, each team will receive the case study. Two (2) 4 x 6 note cards will be provided

for each team member and may be used during the preparation and performance of the event. Information may be written on both sides of the note cards. Note cards will be collected following the presentation. No reference materials, visual aids, or electronic devices may be brought to or used during the preparation or performance. The team has seven (7) minutes to interact with a panel of judges and present the solution to the case. The judges will play the role of the second party in the presentation and refer to the case for specifics. Participants should introduce themselves, describe the situation, make their recommendations, and summarize their case. All team members are expected to actively participate in the performance. A timekeeper will stand at six (6) minutes and again at seven (7) minutes.
