IUST Unique Achievements

Iran University of Science and Technology was originally founded in 1929, as the rst Iranian institute to train engineers. The rst graduate was awarded his bachelors degree in 1932 in the eld of Machine Engineering, followed by the rst chemical engineer in 1935. After many stages of improvement since then, the Institute nally achieved the status of university in 1978 and was named Iran University of Science and Technology. IUST main campus consists of 13 major engineering and science schools and department and 3 other departments (Foreign Languages, Islamic Studies and Physical Education) with a sum of 375 faculty members. Just on the main campus, over 9000 students are studying in 90 specialized programs in engineering and sciences, of whom more than 2100 are Master and 572 are Ph.D. students. Over 40,000 students have graduated from this university since 1932. Furthermore, the IUST has also developed two other campuses in the cities of Arak and Behshahr. The main campus, covering 42 acres, is located in the northeast of Tehran. The campus includes department buildings, research centers, the main library, residential halls, the mosque, administrative buildings, playgrounds and indoor sport facilities as well as a football stadium. There are also a number of other campus facilities such as medical center, post ofce, bank, stationery and book store, bindery shop, photography studio, restaurant and cafeteria, shoemaking shop, barber shop, bakery, supermarket and kindergarten which provide a lively and pleasant environment for the students to feel like home.

In 1995, IUST pioneered in awarding the rst Ph.D. degrees in Iran in the elds of Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Trafc Engineering. The two schools of Railway Engineering and Automotive Engineering, founded respectively in 1997 and 2000, are unique in the Country. IUST Research Centers: Asphalt Concrete Mixture and Bitumen Research Center (ABRC) Analytical Electrochemistry Research Center Automotive Research Center Cement Research Center Electronic Research Center Green Research Center Information Technology Research Center Iran Aluminium Research Center Iran Composites Institute Research Center for Metal Industry and Machining Technology Incubator A Welding Training and Research Center has been established by technical support from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). IUST has been recognized as Center of Excellence in the following elds: Fundamental Studies in Structural Engineering Power Systems Automation and Operation Advanced Materials and Processing

IUST has acquired the 1st rank among Iranian technology universities in terms of research contracts signed with industries and other organizations during the year 2007. IUST has been recognized by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, as one of the 10 accredited centers for scientic assessment of patents. The number of patents registered by IUST faculty members and students during the year 2007 has grown to more than 30. The following scientic journals are published at IUST: International Journal of Engineering Science Iranian Journal of Civil Engineering Iranian Journal of Electrical Engineering Iranian Journal of Materials Engineering

IUST E- Learning Center, established in 2004, is considered as one of the most advanced centers to admit and train students by fully electronic methods of learning. More than 940 students are studying in this Center at the moment. The study programs which are currently offered at the E-Learning Center are Information Technology and Industrial Engineering, at undergraduate level and Executive Master of Business Administration, Information and Communication Technology and Chemical Engineering at postgraduate level. Students enter the program on a provisional basis: having passed their rst semester courses successfully, they will be granted fulltime studentship status. At present, there are nearly 600 conditional students at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Future Plan

For the next steps, this Center will take up quantitative development, qualitative enhancement and upgrading, and procurement of the necessary specialized infrastructures

for the university. The center is considering to develop the number of majors of study and to admit more students, aiming to recruit a maximum of 10,000 students in 5 years. The IUST E-Learning Center has its own Data Center within the university server farm; empowered by a fast 100 Mbps communication link to the national intranet system. As a result, the center is ready to provide virtual learning opportunities to both the local education centers and other service users in national and international levels.
