VALLEY SOCIAL CLUB

NEWSLETTER 2013
VOLUMER 41, ISSUE 10

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT JULIANNE M.

Greetings to all our club members. First off Id like to thank all those who helped at the Halloween/Anniversary Party. Every thing went well and we all had a great time. Now we are really into the holiday season. I cant wait to start buying gifts for my great grand children from Santa. Coming up next at the club is the Thanksgiving dinner on November 27th from 12-1pm at Christ Church in Ansonia. Thanksgiving dinner is always the big event for the year. We always get a turn out of over a hundred people and we eat way more than our bellies can hold. I hope everyone at the club will attend. Along with all this, we will have lots of other things going on. I hope to see everyone at the club.

FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB SYLVIA H.

Hello Everyone! Hope you're all counting your blessings. Being grateful at this time of the year is a blessing in itself. We have a couple of Thanksgiving Day Events coming up. One is with our Options Members in Branford and of course our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Christ Church in Ansonia. People will be getting gift baskets from various places. I know those people who give them to others are blessed for helping out. This year was great, but for some it may be difficult. If your are finding it hard around the holidays, come down to the BHcare and talk to someone. Call the Warm Line at 203-732-2004 too! Dont be alone. Its a joyful season and it shouldnt be difficult for anyone. I wish you all a blessed season

RANDOM THOUGHTS! BY PHYLLIS, CLUB COORDINATOR

Art has played an important part in our club this year. Mark O. is teaching two drawing groups a week, with up to 10 trying new art designs and techniques. The clubs art show was shown in the community at Derby Neck Library. This was very successful. Mark and Carol displayed their art in Ansonia Harvest Festival, sponsored by the Janet Gans Art Fund. They both were able to sell two and three pieces respectively. Melissa P. and Paula B. started a peer run beading club, where members string donated jewelry and make bracelets and necklaces, the creativity is amazing! Karen Kopec retired her art group after 10 years of great projects, thanks Karen! Jill Frager mentors Jacques Maignan club staff, who started decoupage groups two days a week and new art projects continue to flourish some beautiful items. This is giving a new kind of artistic confidence to the participants. Julianne, our club president will be starting a crochet group in December just in time for the holidays. We are very blessed to have people that keep our members in their hearts, and their generosity fosters opportunities such as these mentioned .We would like to say we cant thank you enough for your support and generosity over the years. A THOUGHT! My greatest wish is to cling to your bones to arrest any criminal that forces wounds upon your skin the demons I would face to protect your innocent heart are innumerable. GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS BY CAROL B

On October the 5th, Ansonia had its Ansonia Harvest Festival. Mark O. and myself with the help of Social Club staff set up a display of our artwork. I had nineteen paintings and Mark had twelve paintings, t-shirts, and drawings. I had sold two paintings. One was a painting of 16 bank street and the other was a small scene. Mark sold two paintings and one t-shirt. I had a great time. Thank you everyone for making it possible.

ROBERT S. MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION

No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen Im one autumnal face. By John Denne and Submitted By Robert S.

PARDON US MR. TURKEY !

The origins of the tradition of pardoning the White House turkey are unclear. Many credit President Truman with starting the tradition in 1947. However no official records are known to exist that prove he ever pardoned a turkey. President Kennedy spontaneously spared a turkey on Nov. 18 1963. The bird was wearing a sign that said Good Eating Mr. President. In response the president said to his staff to Lets just keep him . Since 1989 the custom of pardoning a turkey was formalized. The turkey has been taken to a farm where it lives' out its natural life. Turkeys are selected at birth for pardoning and are trained to handle loud noises, camera flashes and large crowds. Because most thanksgiving turkeys are bred and raised for size at the expense of a longer life they are prone to health problems. As a result most pardoned turkeys have very short lives after their pardoning, frequently dying within a year of being pardoned. Taken from Wikipedia.

State of Connecticut offers low income residents a pet spay/neuter program Submitted By Lee H.
Many people in Connecticut find themselves in a financial situation that does not allow for extras. Some more so than others. For those who have pets, frequently their animals do without quality food, medical care and more. The prospect of having a pet spayed or neutered under these circumstances becomes out of the question and too often litters happen, adding to the endless stream of pets dying in the state's pounds. The State of Connecticut's Animal Population Control Program is offering low income residents an opportunity which will provide up to two vouchers per household to approved applicants. The vouchers, similar to those given to residents who adopt a pet from Connecticut's municipal facilities, are valid for 60 days and will provide benefits ($50.00/male cat, $70.00/female cat, $100.00/male dog, and $120.00/female dog) toward vaccinations (rabies and distemper) and the spay or neuter for each pet. A list of participating veterinarians is available, and many of these will accept the voucher as payment in full for the services provided (ask before making your appointment to avoid any misunderstandings). The Animal Population Control Program is funded through adoptions from the state's pounds, dog licensing and the "Caring for Pets" license plate series as well as from private donations. For further information please call (860)713-2507.
