The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The story of a young man taking a physical and spiritual journey of a lifetime in which he discovers that all he ever desired he had all along.

Genre: This novel is a hybrid genre; there is a mix of drama, adventure and fantasy. Date of first publication: 1988 Type of narration: Omniscient narrator; this means that the narrator is all knowing and may influence the readers opinions. Point of view: Third person omniscient, the narrator concentrates on Santiagos journey. At times, the narrator will take a step back from him to concentrate on an ancillary character (the character which has secondary importance and offers the main character an important insight), but it always comes back to its protagonist. The Alchemist is set in a very unclear time period in the past; told in past tense The Alchemist is read like some sort of mystical ancient myth, as we follow the young Andalusian shepherd boy from his home town, Tarifa across right through to the Sahara desert, trying to find his destiny through a series of good and bad omens. This book as seriously changed my perception of things and has inspired me to dream and do greatly, it is a very spiritual book and there are five main lessons I have learnt from it; do not be afraid of failure, with failure comes experience and the knowledge of what to do and what to not do in future situations; relationships should definitely not prohibit you from pursuing your dreams and reaching your goals, this applies to boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, family members etc. Anyone who hinders you from following your dream does not have your best interests at heart; every search begins with beginners luck and every search ends with victors being severely tested; and finally, never ever give up, no matter what obstacles and bad omens you may come across. When we love we always strive to become better than we are, when we strive to become better than we are everything around us becomes better too. Santiago is a humble shepherd who has a few desires:the freedom to roam with his flock, to drink some wine in his wineskin and read a book in his bag. Fate intervenes, however, in the form of the recurring dream of a great treasure hidden thousands of miles away at the base of the Egyptian Pyramids. When Santiago meets Melchizedek, a strange wise man who claims he is a king from a far-off land, he decides to seek his treasure. The next day, Santiago sells his sheep and embarks to Africa to pursue his dream.
