This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention
Chapter VI, Section A-VI/4, Table A-VI/4-1. On meeting the minimum
standard of competence in medical first aid, a trainee will be competent to
apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board.

Body structure and function (elementary notions of anatomy and
physiology) - description:
o skeleton
o articulations, muscles and tendons

o main organs (brain, heart, lung, etc.).


o circulatory systems

Medical aid in a major accident
- correct positioning of the victim, especially:
- safe position
- position resuscitation
- recognizing the causes and signs of loss of consciousness
- Emergency measures including:
- maintain free airways
- cardio-respiratory recognition

Basic life support BLS
- recognize the situations requiring cardio-respiratory resuscitation
- victim and rescuer risk recognition
- applying the correct procedures for cardio-respiratory resuscitation :
o freedom airway assessment, breathing evaluation, circulation
assessment
o mouth-to-mouth ventilation, mouth-to-nose ventilation
o special circumstances of cardio-respiratory resuscitation (drowning,
hypothermia, electrocuted)
o airway obstruction

Bleeding
- bleeding occurrence situations
- Getting to limit the bleeding, especially if
o internal / external bleeding
- shock
o situations of shock appearance
o recognize signs and symptoms
o shock management

Burns, frostbite, electrocution
- recognizing signs of burns and frostbite, injuries caused by electric
current
- remedial action in case of burns and frostbite
- corrective actions for chemical burns
- corrective actions if electrocution:
o risk Assessment
o isolation of the victim
o prevention of cardio-respiratory arrest
o control of vital functions

Transport of injured patients
- identification and application of:
o improvised means of transport
o special means of transport
o general transport rules
o risk recognition for trauma patient transport (especially the spine and
pelvis damage) and applying the correct procedures

Surgical emergencies
- emergency attitude if wounds, dislocations, sprains, fractures:
o signs and symptoms recognition
o medical aid
o types of bandages and their correct use
- infectious diseases:
o recognition of the risks of contact with infectious diseases, especially
infectious diseases (typhoid, dysentery, malaria, viral hepatitis), HIVAIDS infection, sexually transmitted diseases
o fight with infection and prevention of diseases
- notions of personal hygiene
- other emergencies - General concepts:
o poisoning
o lipotimia
o hypothermia
o hypertension
o myocardial infarction
o diabetic emergencies
o abdominal pain
o acute abdomen, acute appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, peritonitis,
intestinal obstruction
- use of medical guidelines
