More experienced Jefferson boys crew awaits new campaign

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com DELPHOS Last season, the Jefferson boys basketball unit under then eighth-year head man Marc Smith was extremely young with only two seniors to dot the roster and a total of five experienced hands from the previous year. This years crew will have double that number of 12th-graders but will still feature its share of youngsters though it will be a lot more experienced as a total of seven lettermen are back from a 5-18 edition of Wildcats in 2012-13, including 2-7 in the Northwest Conference. Among those seven are all five starters, including fourth-year senior and double-double battler Ross Thompson (6-2 post/guard; 9.9 points, 9.7 boards per game; missed part of last season with an injury) whom Smith figures will get his share of postseason honors fourth-year 6-0 senior guard Austin Jettinghoff (6.3 counters, 2.4 assists), third-year junior Nick Fitch (6-2 post; 5.1 markers, 6.2 rebounds; missed part of last season with an injury), second-year 6-5 sophomore guard/post Trey Smith (15.6 counters, 5.0 boards) winner of three major post-season honors in his inaugural season and whom the coach also figures will get even more of his share of that recognition and second-year sophomore Dalton Hicks (6-1 post; 2.4 markers, 4.5 boards). On paper, Trey and Ross are the guys that we would expect to lead us statistically this season and are most likely going to get recognized, Coach Smith said. As well, 5-11 senior guard Tyler Mox and 5-11 sophomore guard Josh Teman garnered varsity letters mainly off the bench a year ago. We return all five starters and seven lettermen from last season, with two 4-year letterwinners in Ross and Austin to lead the charges. Ross hopes to return to the all-NWC form of his sophomore season after an injury-plagued junior year, while Austin returns to lead from his point guard position, Coach Smith noted. Trey returns after an inaugural season that saw him earn all-NWC, all-Van Wert Area and all-Northwest Ohio postseason honors. In the post, Nick returns from injury and Dalton returns for his second campaign. Two other lettermen bolster the roster, including a high-energy guard in Tyler and a swingman in Josh. We are optimistic for a bounceback season with our mix of talent and athleticism. Two key newcomers to the varsity roster are 6-1 senior guard/post Tyler Rice and 5-7 freshman guard Jace Stockwell, along with 5-7 junior guard Kurt Wollenhaupt and 5-9 freshman guard Drew Reiss. They must replace a key loss in graduated rotation player Zach Ricker

Wildcat matmen a painfully young crew for 2013-14

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS Jefferson third-year wrestling coach Mike Wilson has had two pretty good years since taking over in the 2010-11 season from program founder Jeff Rex. His first year, he had the second individual Division III State champion in the then-12-year history of the program Curtis Miller. Last year, he had three State qualifiers: seventhplace finisher Colin McConnahea at 195 and qualifiers Quentin Wessell at 220 and Geoff Ketcham at heavyweight. He will have his work cut out for him this winter as he is fielding a very freshmen-laden group for 2013-14. He returns only five wrestlers with experience from last season: senior Tanner Vermule at 126, senior Dustin McCo-

nnahea at heavyweight he backed up all three of the State qualifiers at various times for various reasons junior Tyler Foust (182), sophomore Dylan Hicks (152) and sophomore Josh Kroeger (170). As well, junior Aaron Parkins (170) returns after lettering as a freshman but taking his sophomore season off. We lost all three of our State qualifiers and dont have a lot of experience returning. All five of those guys and Aaron coming back after a year off are good building blocks for this year but I dont know if you can be any younger than we are this season, Wilson noted. Most of the rest of the members of this unit are freshmen or new upperclassmen. We have a couple of guys that either did not wrestle last year sophomore Tanner Lindeman or ever junior Jordan Blackburn. Basically, everyone else is a freshmen, Wilson explained. I am excited about this group, though; we have

some talented wrestlers in that group but they are going to learn quickly that varsity wrestling is a whole different level than junior high. For example, I just found out that our opening meet of the season, the Oak Harbor Invitational (Friday, Nov. 30), is now a dual meet format and the Lakewood St. Edwards B team will be there. They will get their eyes opened quickly. At the same time, I feel we can have a pretty good year, dependent on how quickly they can make that adjustment. The likely lineup at this point stands thus: 103 pounds: freshmen Andrew Foust and David Grant; 113: freshman Jacob Boop; 120: freshman Wyatt Place; 126: Lindeman; 132: freshmen Jacob Harvey and Daniel Lehmkuhl; 138: Vermule; 145: freshman Hunter Binkley; 152: Hicks; 160: freshmen Ryan Diltz and Nolan Ditto; 170: freshmen Lane Bennett and Hunter Samons, Parkins, Kroeger and Blackburn; 182: Tyler Foust and junior Reid Corzine; 195: freshmen Spencer Wannemacher and Jacob Pulford; and 285: McConnahea.

We lost all three of our State qualifiers and dont have a lot of experience returning. All five of those guys and Aaron coming back after a year off are good building blocks for this year but I dont know if you can be any younger than we are this season.

Mike Wilson, Head coach, Jefferson wrestling

Right now, we dont have a 220-pounder. However, we feel we have the depth to move kids around and pretty much fill out every weight class, Wilson added. That will be important in the Northwest Conference and in the Team Tournament. No matter what level of experience I have with a given team, the only thing I preach about is fundamentals. During one practice this pre-season, all I taught them was one move. I have had wrestlers make it to State that basically had one takedown move, one on-top move and one from the bottom. Its not how many you have but being able to execute the simple things that make for success. I cant wait for the season to start. Its wrestling season and Im excited about it. Assisting in the coaching duties are Curtis and Stuart Miller and Brent Binkley.

Marc Smith, head coach, Jefferson boys

and a part-timer, Seth Wollenhaupt. We are very excited to get this season underway. We have some talented players that are expected to step up and fulfill various roles for our team success, Coach Smith added. Overall, we return seven key contributors from last years squad whove had another year to gain strength and improve their basketball skills. We believe that this group of young men has a great deal of versatility and competitiveness. As with any successful team, we must learn to play together and accept our individual roles. We must improve on the defensive end of the floor and stay competitive on the boards while playing to the talents of our returning players and talented newcomers. We hope to improve as the year progresses so we are playing our best basketball as the tournament approaches. Assisting in the coaching duties are Mark Jettinghoff and Todd Grothaus. The junior varsity unit consists of Teman, Reiss, sophomore Alex Neubert (5-6 guard), sophomore Ryan Goergens (5-10 guard), sophomore Grant Wallace (6-0 guard) and freshmen Cole Arroyo (5-7 guard), Ryan Wittler (5-9 guard), Kyle Wreede (511 guard), Brandon Herron (5-10 post/ guard), Christian Stemen (6-1 post), Austin Blanton (6-1 post), Nick Long (6-3 post) and Drake Schmitt (6-3 post). The Wildcats commence play in 2013-14 hosting Vanlue Friday, Nov. 29.

caused by those injuries since there were no seniors on the roster last winter to compensate for and a third suffered by senior Brooke Hesseling, an expected varsity player this season, is senior Lindsay Deuel (5-7 guard), part-time varsity player Shelby Koenig (6-1 junior post), Heather Pohlman (5-5 junior guard) and 5-6 sophomore guard Taylor Stroh. Our other two juniors: Shelby and Heather; will be called upon to help us out a lot with our pressure and depth. Shelby in particular gives is an inside presence that we generally do not have, especially defensively, and Heather provides depth at guard, Hoffman continued. We averaged 44 points a game last year and gave up 50, partly because we were still relatively young and didnt have much proven size. Because of the injuries, depth is more of a concern than we anticipated before the season. Because of that, we also dont have the overall speed we have had recently but we are a little taller. We will still utilize the press and aggressive play to force an up-tempo game by pressing and using a trapping defense but do have some strength inside with Jasmine and height with Shelby. We will have 19) players on the roster but only 17 will be available at the beginning of the season. We did not

shoot well last year and are looking at improving in this area. One strength is our ballhandling. We had 111 less turnovers than our opponents last year and hopefully that trend will continue. The junior varsity unit, headed by 24-year reserve coach Jamie Lewis, has Stroh, sophomore Tori Black (5-5 guard), sophomore Jessica Pimpas (5-8 guard/post), sophomore Bailey Gorman (5-9 post) and freshmen Kiya Wollenhaupt (5-1 guard), Mackenzie Hammons (5-5 guard), Kelsey Berelsman (5-3 guard), Lindsey Jettinghoff (5-4 guard) and Regan Nagel (5-6 guard/post). As the season progresses, we hope to get support from our sophomores in Taylor, Tori, Jessica and Bailey. They will anchor the JV team while the five freshmen adapt to the speed and physical play of this level but we also anticipate that they can eventually help us on varsity this year, Hoffman added. I think the NWC should be very competitive this year. Crestview, Columbus Grove, Allen East and Ada all have excellent teams, along with Paulding, Bluffton and Spencerville being very competitive. Denise Lindeman serves as the eighth-grade coach, Bub Lindeman the seventh-grade coach and Butch Lucas the fifth/sixth-grade coach. The Lady Wildcats opened the new season Friday, Nov. 22, at home versus Fort Recovery.

Elwer bides his time for boys basketball at St. Johns

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com DELPHOS St. Johns boys basketball coach Aaron Elwer had a superb season in 201213, taking the Blue Jays to their first Division IV Regional final since the State championship year of 2001-02. The dream ended at the hands of Troy Christian in the Kettering Fairmont Regional finals. When the final gun sounded, that also ended the scholastic cage careers of several key contributors, such as four-year lettermen and 3-year starter Curtis Geise (19.7 points, 5.9 boards, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals per game), 3-year letterman Ryan Buescher (11.3 markers, 7.5 caroms, 3.3 assists, 2.0 steals) and center Seth Bockey (5.3 counters, 3.0 rebounds) for a unit that scored at a 57.7-points-per-game click and ceded 46.8. Turnwald has intriguing mix for Ottoville boys cagers

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com OTTOVILLE Ottoville head boys basketball coach Todd Turnwald begins his third season at the Big Green helm with a mixed bag. One, he has three returning starters and a fourth letterman from an 8-15 team a year ago, including 3-4 in the Putnam County League. On the other hand, he only has a total of 14 players for the high school roster, so depth will be an issue, especially with a junior varsity schedule thrown in.

Kleman readying Lady Green for more success on the court

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com OTTOVILLE Ottoville girls basketball mentor Dave Kleman earned his 400th career victory at last winters Division IV State semifinals before his Lady Big Green fell to Fort Loramie in the finals (his 96th loss). With that contest, four players saw their scholastic hardwood careers end: 4-year player Abby Siefker (Bowling Green; finishing with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds), 4-year player Rachel Beining, 3-year player Nicole Vorst) and 3-year player Rachel Turnwald). He did expect to have six letterwinners back from that 27-1 (7-0 Putnam County League) edition but lost fourth-year senior and fifth starter Tonya Kaufman (5-8 guard) to a knee injury at the start of volleyball season. He still has a handful of experienced hands for this edition of Lady Big Green. See KLEMAN, Page 21

Lyndsey Wannemacher and 5-7 sophomore center Nicole Kramer. We have a lot of great players to replace from last year. I expect us to be competitive in all our games and we hope to finish above .500, he added. As the younger players gain in experience, we should make nice improvements in our game. By the end of the year, we should be a much-improved team and we hope to make a good run in the tournament. The league should be strong with Leipsic, Pandora-Gilboa, Continental, Columbus Grove and Kalida, as well as ourselves, fighting for the title. The remainder of the roster only 15 are in the high school program has junior Chelsey Boecker (5-3 guard) and freshmen Madison Knodell (5-4 guard), Autumn Neer (5-4 guard), Brooke Mangas (5-6 guard), Alisha Honigford (5-7 guard) and Alexis Thorbahn (5-9 guard/forward). Assisting in the coaching duties are Vaughn Horstman, Deb Lindeman and Michelle Leach. The Lady Green opened the season Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Van Wert Tip-Off Classic.

I expect us to be a good defensive team. We will use a lot of different defenses, depending on the type of team we play. As the season goes on, we should get a lot better offensively. However, we need to get a lot better at rebounding the basketball and reducing our turnovers.

Utendorf takes over Musketeer boys cagers for long-time mentor Von Sossan
By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com FORT JENNINGS The Fort Jennings varsity boys basketball team has been guided by long-time head coach John Von Sossan for the previous 27 years, accumulating a 309-300 mark in those seasons. That included a 6-17 mark last winter, including 2-5 in the Putnam County League. He had served within the Musketeer program for well over 40 years. He decided to hang up his whistle shortly after his team fell to St. Johns in the Division IV Sectional semifinals, opening the door for Keith Utendorf to take over the reins. Liebrecht moves to the head of the Lady Musketeer bench

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

2013 The Herald Winter Sports 23

FORT JENNINGS The Fort Jennings girls basketball team finished 8-14 in 2012-13 under first-year head coach Kevin Horstman, including a 2-5 record in the Putnam County League. Horstman had served as a coach in the program somewhere for 17 years. He ceded the head coaching reins to another assistant coach, Rhonda Liebrecht, for the 201314 edition of the Lady Musketeers. Not only has the head coach from a year ago departed but so did all-PCL performer and 3-year varsity player Macy Schroeder, as well as 2-year varsity players Gabbi German and Gina Stechschulte, from last winter. sixth-man spot with the starting five still up in the air at this point of the preseason are Josh Wittler (6-1 senior post; 3.1 counters), Logan Sickles (6-3 senior post; .7), Nate German (5-11 senior forward) and junior Austin Kehres (6-0 guard; 3.3). One of the things we do well consistently is I think our kids have accepted coaching very well and are willing to work at improving their skills, Utendorf noted. Our basic offense is motion and we will focus a lot on playing solid man-to-man defense as our base. We can, at times, shoot the ball with effectiveness but need to become better at shooting when defended. Having to replace a trio of starters in 3-year varsity players Brandon Kohli (10.9 counters, 6.3 caroms, 2.4 assists), Kurt Warnecke (9.2 markers, 5.8 boards) and Chad Recker (7.6 points), along with veteran Drew Stechschulte (.6), that leaves the door open for promising newcomers such as Mark Metzger (5-11 junior guard), Tyler Ricker (5-11 junior forward) and 6-2 sophomore forward Drew Grone. Filling out the varsity roster are Alex Berelsman (6-0 sophomore guard) and Aaron Neidert (5-9 sophomore guard). What we need to address is developing an intensity for guarding the basketball and shooting the basketball with greater efficiency. We need to work on playing with pace both offensively and defensively, Utendorf ended. These players have worked hard in the offseason and we hope that this work will pay off. We will look to compete every night in an always-challenging Putnam County League, as well as a very com-

petitive non-league schedule. Improving every day is one of the goals our kids have adopted and we will look to do so throughout the season. I always think that the league is tough to navigate and this year, while it may appear to be down to an outside observer, is going to be a challenge. If you look back to history, almost every year there is at least one or two teams that are at the regional tournament and this year looks the same. As far as returners, obviously Columbus Grove and Ottoville have a lot coming back and they look to be the class of the league going into the season. However, with the sustained success that Kalida, Leipsic, Miller City and others have had recently and historically, you can count no one out. The varsity assistant is Todd Bullinger. The Musketeer junior varsity, coached by Jay Laubenthal, has Neidert, Berelsman, Ricker, sophomores C.J. Cummings (5-7 guard), Jeremy Smith (5-5 guard), Zack Finn (6-0 post) and Lucas Ricker (5-10 forward); and freshmen Kyle Maag (5-8 guard), Troy Ricker (5-11 forward), Austin Luebrecht (5-6 guard), Doc Calvelage (5-8 forward), Stuart Smith (5-6 guard), Sam Vetter (5-9 forward) and Connor Stechschulte (6-0 post). The freshmen unit has Troy Ricker, Maag, Leubrecht, Stechschulte, Calvelage, Vetter and Smith. The Musketeers were set to open the season on Friday, Nov. 29, at Arlington but because of the success of the Red Devils football team, that gave has been postponed; now the Musketeers will open on Saturday, Nov. 30, at home versus Ayersville.

What we need to address is developing an intensity for guarding the basketball and shooting the basketball with greater efficiency. We need to work on playing with pace both offensively and defensively. These players have worked hard in the off-season and we hope that this work will pay off. We will look to compete every night in an always-challenging Putnam County League, as well as a very competitive non-league schedule. Improving every day is one of the goals our kids have adopted and we will look to do so throughout the season.

All-NWC Williams set to pace Lancer boys

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com RURAL MIDDLE POINT Brett Hammons went 10-14 in his first season at the helm of the Lincolnview boys basketball team last winter, including a 5-4 finish in the Northwest Conference. He begins his sophomore campaign with three returning starters and two other lettermen back from the unit. Back for a unit that averaged 46.8 points per game are the likes of starters Kyle Williams (5-10 senior guard; 15 points, 1.7 assists, 1.6 steals per game), a second-team All-NWC and all-District 8 pick; 6-3 senior forward Conner McCleery (3.3 markers, 3.4 boards) and 5-10 junior forward Justis Dowdy (8.5 counters, 2.6 caroms). Also back as lettermen off the bench are Logan Miller (6-3 senior forward; .7 points) and Eli Farmer (6-1 senior forward; 1.0). Those five experienced players are a good play to start; that is one of our strengths. As well, we have the ability to run the floor, Hammons began. We look to play good man-to-man defense and look to run the floor in transition. What we are weak at right now and need to address is being more consistent on both offense and defense and playing better as a team. One of our main goals is to get our younger and older guys to gel together and be more consistent. With the departure of two starters: Nick Leeth (5.5 counters, 1.8 assists, 3.2 boards) and Kade Carey (9.4 counters, 3.2 boards); and three other lettermen: Mark Evans (2.0 points, 1.7 rebounds), Brooks Ludwig (1.2 counters) and Angelo Katalenas (.3), Hammons will need his new varsity players to fill in as needed. Promising newcomers include Austin Leeth (5-8 sophomore guard) and Hayden Ludwig (6-2 sophomore forward), both possible starters, and Chandler Adams (6-2 sophomore center). I feel that we have a high ceiling of ability and if we can continue to get our players to develop, good things can happen, Hammons added. I feel we have a shot to compete in our conference. I feel that with that high ceiling we have and if we can continue to get better, we have the chance to put ourselves in the mix. My view is that Crestview, Columbus Grove, Paulding and Spencerville are teams to beat. The remainder of the varsity roster has senior Ben Bilimek (5-9 guard), senior Derek Friesner (5-7 guard) and classmate

Williamson needs to replace quartet of starters for Lady Lancers

Our biggest strength will be our overall athleticism and speed. We hope to be able to spread the floor on offense and use our athleticism to create mismatches. Our biggest weakness will be our lack of size and ability to guard taller teams. We will try to be very deliberate on offense and limit our turnovers. Likewise, we hope our defense will be able to force turnovers, which will lead to easy scores.
Dan Williamson, head coach, Lincolnview girls By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com RURAL MIDDLE POINT Dan Williamson had a pretty productive season in his third season as head coach of the Lincolnview girls varsity hardwood program, going 18-6 overall, 7-2 in the Northwest Conference. That crew of Lady Lancers lost to eventual Division IV State runner-up Ottoville in the District semifinals. However, that loss saw the departure of four key players that helped him build his 3-season resume of 31-36, so Williamson has his work cut out for him in 2013-14. all athleticism and speed. We hope to be able to spread the floor on offense and use our athleticism to create mismatches, he explained. Our biggest weakness will be our lack of size and ability to guard taller teams. We will try to be very deliberate on offense and limit our turnovers. Likewise, we hope our defense will be able to force turnovers, which will lead to easy scores. Miller welcomes back more experienced Lancer mat crew

BY JOHN PARENT DHI CORRESPONDENT NEWS@DELPHOSHERALD.COM RURAL MIDDLE POINT Last season, a young and relatively inexperienced group of wrestlers competed for Lincolnview head coach Curtis Miller. This year, Miller can look forward to seeing a more veteran squad take to the mat for the Lancers, though he is still struggling with overall numbers. Lincolnviews three highest-placing grapplers from last seasons sectional meet are back this season with third-year junior Alex Rodriguez and fourth-year seniors Doug Hicks and Dalton West looking to improve upon solid seasons from a year ago. Gone from last seasons team is 4-year varsity grappler Jaquobe Markward, who claimed the gold in the 113-pound class at last years Lancer Invitational and also took home the title in the same weight class at the Northwest Conference tournament. Hicks, however, finished fourth at the Division III sectional at Lima Central Catholic last February, dropping a decision in the 170-pound class to Thunderbird Bobby Sunderhaus. Hicks was the runner-up to Sunderhaus at 170 at the NWC tournament and also took home the silver at the Lancer Invitational last season. Rodriguez is coming off a stellar cross country campaign that saw him help lead the Lancers all the way to the Division III State meet. In fact, Rodriguez registered the squads fastest times at both the regional and the state meets and hopes to continue that stellar success onto the mat. That kind of stamina will certainly serve him well in his return to the mat, where last season he placed fifth at the sectional as a 113-pound grappler. Rodriguez also performed well at the NWC, taking home a third-place finish and a fourth at the Lancer

Invitational. West was also solid last season while wrestlting in the 195-pound class. He placed fifth at sectionals while placing fourth at the Lancer Invitational and again at the NWC meet. Lincolnview opens the 2013-14 mat season at the Wayne Trace Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 30.

He continues to not only seek to present a team that doesnt rest on its tradition but build on it. The coach elected to the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999, the Naismith Memorial Basketball HOF from the OHSAA in 2002, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association as a Coach of the Year Finalist for Boys Basketball in 2003 and into the Ohio Basketball HOF in 2012 has five lettermen back from last winter to do just that: three starters in seniors Joe Gerdeman (6-2 1/2 center) and 5-9

guard Adam Langhals (both captains) and junior Devin Kortokrax (6-0 forward); and two bench players in senior captain Randy Zeller (6-4 center) and junior Cole Miller (6-3 center). Because of the competitive schedule that we play, we will probably need the first part of the season to develop a style of play and the team chemistry necessary to obtain championship status in the PCL and Northwest Ohio. Also, we graduated two excellent players from last years team in Austin Horstman and Cody Mathew, Kortokrax noted. At present, the current team is dedicating itself to having another winning season in 2013-2014. Our concept of winning is that the players develop

He has coached for eight seasons at the school and 12 overall and hopes to build this seasons unit around second-team all-PCL player Jackie Gardner (recovering from injury during the fall; third-year junior; 5-8 guard/ wing; 10.4 points, 6.2 boards, 1.3 assists, 2.4 steals), along with four other fulltime veterans: third-year 5-9 senior post Elizabeth Turnwald (4.0 points, 4.2 caroms), 5-9 third-year junior guard/wing Nicole Recker (5.0 counters, 2.0 boards), 5-6 sophomore guard Brittany Kahle (3.9

points, 1.7) and 5-10 sophomore wing/ post Kylie Osterhage (7.2, 4.9). Three others had limited minutes on varsity last winter: 5-5 junior guard/wing Makenna Vorst, 5-3 senior guard Nicole Reindel and 5-8 junior wing Kennedy Hoffman. Once again, we have a group of girls that work extremely hard and this is probably one of the most skilled teams Ive had since Ive been at Kalida. Unlike the last few years, we feel coming into the year that we will be ahead of where we normally are offensively as we have a few more with a mindset to score, Huber began. He lost six letterwinners from last season, including two honorable-mention all-PCL picks in 3-year letterwinners Summer Holtkamp (4.8 points, 2.3 steals, 1.8, rebounds, 1.2 assists per game) and Amy Smith (5.6 markers, 5.7 boards, 1.8 steals), injury-plagued Julia Vandemark (3 years; .8 points, .8 rebounds, .3 as-

sists; injured most of the year), along with 2-year varsity player Kristi Honigfort (2.1 points, 1.2 boards); as well 1-year players Kiersten Recker and Kylie Siebeneck decided to sit out their senior seasons. The four seniors that graduated: Sum-

mer, Amy, Julia, and Kristi; took with them a great deal of production and leadership, Huber continued. Julia, when healthy, was our primary ballhandler, Amy and Summer were our two best defenders See HUBER, page 30

and always drew the toughest assignments and Kristi was one of our most consistent and best outside shooters. Were going to need the younger girls to fill those holes throughout the course of the season. Along with Vorst, Reindel and Hoffman, other promising newcomers expected to help out the LadyCat depth are sophomores Joni Kaufman (5-4 guard), Allison Recker (5-10 post) and Katelyn Siebeneck (5-4 guard). We still are not very tall and although we are ahead offensively, I dont think we are anywhere near where we can be defensively with more repetitions. We are also not very deep with only 16 players at the varsity and JV level this year and although they are skilled, our depth will be tested early due to some injuries, Huber said. We are also a relatively young team with only two seniors and only one of them playing meaningful varsity minutes in the past. I believe we can again play with anyone on our schedule but it all depends what kind of work we put in during the early part of the year. We will be inexperienced past our first four or five so our depth and young players will need to get used to the speed of the varsity game in order for us to achieve our goals. Our number one goal every year is to get a little bit better each day so we are playing our best basketball at the end of the season. The remainder of the varsity has sophomores Laine Laudick (5-7 guard/wing) and Cathy Basinger (5-8 wing). Assisting in the coaching ranks are Kayla King (varsity), Scott Miller, Tony Leader and JV coach Robb Schultz. The PCL might be a little more balanced than in years past but with the winning streak they have, Ottoville is still right up at the top and will continue to be

a strong contender. I also look for Leipsic and Pandora to be right there as well with the experience and talent they have returning; you cant take anyone for granted in this league with the rivalries and coaches, he added. a positive mental attitude, team chemistry and work ethic which will result in everyone giving the best they are capable of giving on a regular basis, both in practices and in games. If our players do this and they are humble in winning and gentlemen to all they meet, then they are winners in both the game of basketball and more importantly the game of life. Our captains are expected to lead by their examples in following the Creed and strive to be the best they can be both on and off the court for this years team, the coach added. Grove boys return foursome to the cage

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com COLUMBUS GROVE The Columbus Grove boys hardwood unit gave second-year head coach Ryan Stechschulte a 17-8 season a year ago, finishing 6-3 in the Northwest Conference and 6-1 in the Putnam County League. When the Bulldogs lost in the Division IV District finals, seven seniors had played their final games for Stechschulte. He now enters 2013-14 with a 3613 record at the school and returns four veterans from last years unit. Two of them are starters: third-year player Will Vorhees (6-7, 220 pounds; forward/center) and junior Jace Darbyshire (5-10 guard); both of whom the coach expects to be all-league and potentially all-State candidates. The other two veterans are senior Riley Brubaker (6-2 forward) and junior Joey Warnecke (5-10 guard). This group gives great effort; that is a strength of these guys, Stechschulte said. We have a couple of things we need to address: communication, continuity and consistency. With the departure of the graduated Derek Rieman (6-3 center), Brady Shafer (6-3 forward), Collin Grothaus (5-9 guard), Blake Hoffman (5-11 guard), Clay Diller (6-0 forward), Dakota Vogt (6-1 forward) and Josh Tussing (5-11 forward), the Bulldogs are expected to be in a bit of a rebuilding mode with so many new faces on the varsity roster. That leaves an opening for the fifth starter and bench players to come from promising newcomers such as junior David Bogart (5-9 guard), junior Elisha Jones (6-1 forward), junior Noah Kohls (6-0 forward), sophomore Logan Diller (6-3 forward) and sophomore Gabe Stechschulte (6-0 guard). However, the motion offense and man-to-man defense remain as primary building blocks for Stechschultes troops. There should be great competition within the program for playing time at the varsity level. A surprise player could

Schroeder begins Grove girls tenure with 5 letterwinners

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com COLUMBUS GROVE The Columbus Grove girls basketball team went 5-18 a year ago in an injury-plagued season under then-coach Chad Ricker, including 3-6 in the Northwest Conference and 1-6 in the Putnam County League. When the Lady Bulldogs fell in the Division IV Sectional finals, Breanne Halker and Renee Halker bid adieu to the unit. New coach Brian Schroeder has four starters and a fifth veteran back for his first season at the helm. The starters back include second-year senior Sammi Stechschulte (forward) and second-year senior Rachel Schumacher (guard), third-year junior Sydney McCluer (guard) and sophomore Kyrah Yinger (guard). Also back is senior forward Julia Wynn. We have a lot of players currently competing for playing time and pushing each other in practice. If we continue to improve on the defensive end and find some consistent scorers, we hope to compete in the NWC and PCL, Schroeder explained. He has a trio of promising newcomers to fill in the bench spots: sophomore Lynea Diller (forward), sophomore Mady Vorhees (forward) and freshman guard Jade Clement. Other members of the 2013-14 varsity are junior forward Becca Endicott, sophomore guard Brooke Hoffman and sophomore guard Mackenzie Wurth. The junior varsity roster, coached by Jerry Hoersten, has Endicott, Hoffman, Wurth, junior forward Charlotte Gardner, sophomore guard McKenzie Bame and freshmen Danielle Caudill (forward), Candace Downing (guard), Jenny Ellerbrock (guard), Hallie Malsam (forward), Macy McCluer (guard), Lauren Roose (forward), Grace Schroeder (forward) and Kiara Williams (forward). Matt Myerholtz is the freshmen coach. Columbus Grove opened the Schroeder tenure on Saturday, Nov. 23, at home versus Lima Senior.

senior Aaron Crider (6-4 center), junior Trevor McMichael, junior Grant Goecke (5-11 forward), 5-11 sophomore guard Mason Nourse, sophomore Damien Corso (6-2 forward), sophomore David Wisher (5-8 guard), freshman Jacob Meyer (6-0 guard), freshman Dakota Prichard (6-1 forward), freshman Bailey Croft (6-3 forward) and classmate Griffen Croft (6-3 center). I dont think there is any question that Crestview is the team to beat this year in the NWC; they have experience, depth and talent at every position, the coach added. More than any other year, this team is going to need to be balanced; we have the ability to do just that and it will be necessary to compete offensively. The big learning curve will be defensively; if we can learn how to defend and rebound, we have a chance to be really good. The varsity assistant coach is Matt Goecke, the junior varsity coach is Jim Sensabaugh and the freshmen coach is Wes Croft. The Spencerville boys cagers commence the new season on the road on Friday, Nov. 29, at St. Henry.

Lady Bearcats eying stronger cage season

2013 The Herald Winter Sports 33 35

SPENCERVILLE Warren Pughsley went 3-19 in his first season as the Spencerville girls basketball team, including 2-7 in the Northwest Conference. It Was also his first ever as a high school coach. However, that was a youthful team with only two seniors on the roster both starters so he returns eight letterwinners from that edition of Lady Bearcats. We only lost allconference selection Abby Freewalt and Alyssa Mulholland, so we return the bulk of our team, Pughsley explained. Our returning letterwinners include seniors Tori Hardesty (5-8 post) and Karri Purdy (5-7 wing), juniors Katie Merriman (5-7 post), Emilee Meyer (5-7 point guard), Megan Miller (5-7 wing) and Schylar Miller (5-3 point guard) and sophomores Jacey Grigsby (5-6 wing) and Caitlyn Propst (5-9 post). Pughsley projected that the starting five at this point would be Purdy at the shooting guard, Schylar Miller at the point, Grigsby at small forward, Merriman at power forward and Probst at center. One promising newcomer is 5-7 junior wing Amanda Crider. She was actually expected to contribute to the varsity last year but she tore her ACL during the first game of the season and had surgery, he explained. One other possibility at this time to replace the graduated players and provide the needed depth so the Lady Bearcats can utilize Pughsleys planned up-tempo attack plan is 5-9 junior post Audrey Bowsher. We will be able to play faster this year because we have gotten a little smarter on the court and will continue to grow in our understanding of the game. I felt like last year, we had a seventhgrade basketball IQ at the beginning of the year and a ninth-grade at the end, he concluded. This past summer, we started looking like a varsity team mid-way through June. We know we are better this year but the girls know that means nothing if we dont play like it. We plan to switch between zone and man defense, full- and half-court. Offensively, we are small, so we plan to move the ball quickly and try to take advantage of having four guards on the floor.

We aspire to win every conference game we play but we are not yet at that point; however, we are definitely better than last year. To be successful, we need to stay injury-free our players had six MRIs and four concussions last year. We plan to be in the middle of the pack in the

conference but very competitive in almost every game. The Spencerville girls junior varsity is comprised of all freshmen: Allison Adams (5-7 post), Madison Catlin (5-4 point guard), Olivia Clark (5-7 wing), Lexi Gilroy (5-6 wing), Carleigh Hefner (5-1

point guard), Courtney Hittle (5-10 post), Gaby Romaker (5-6 wing), Sami Sutherly (5-7 post) and Tiffany Work (5-7 point guard). Spencerville commenced the 2013-14 campaign Saturday, Nov. 23, versus Fort Jennings.

Bearcat matmen

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com SPENCERVILLE Tom Wegesin built up the Spencerville wrestling program into a consistently good program in his 16 years at the Bearcat helm. In 2013-14, he turns the reins over to a former pupil, Zac Clum in his first year as a varsity coach to continue the steady excellence of the unit. He returns a handful of lettermen to do so in the likes of fourth-year senior Trevor Bockey, third-year junior Cole Bellows, third-year junior Derrick Smith, third-year junior Dakota Sutherland and second-year sophomore Wyatt Krouskop. He must replace more than his share of veteran wrestlers that exhausted their eligibility last February, including 3-year performers Cory Binkley, Kyle Sawmiller and Lucas Krouskop; 2-year guys Jacob

Yahl and Jake Bellows; and 1-year letterman Austin Lee. Promising newcomers for the firstyear coach include Cody Dickson, Peyton Ford and Logan Vandemark. The rest of the varsity squad has Matthew Hurless, Trenton Schwartz, Tyler Dues, Austin Gallimore, Caleb Sutherland, Brandon Patterson, Robby King, Alex Mayer, Chase Arnett-Van Schoyck and Zach Brown. Assisting in the coaching duties are Cory Binkley and Jim Lunz. We have good numbers; that is a positive for us. Where we are weak is that a lot of these guys are young and inexperienced, Clum said. Our goal is to be competitive against Northwest Conference teams and at the conference tournament. Clums tenure begins Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Coldwater Sielski Invitational.

Mathias leads Bulldog boys into new cage season

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA The Elida boys basketball crew finished 2013-14 in the Division II District finals, ending up with a 17-7 record and an 8-1 mark in the competitive Western Buckeye League. In 2013-14, veteran head coach Denny Thompson (97-68 career coaching mark) has Purdue signee Dakota Mathias to lead the way as he returns three other starters and two more lettermen for the newest campaign. Besides leading scorer Mathias (6-5 all-position player expected to be an all-State candidate), he returns 5-11 senior point/shooting guard Louis Gray (potential all-WBL player), 6-2 senior power forward/center Max Stambaugh and 6-2 senior shooting guard/ small forward Austin Allemeier (possible all-WBL player) to the starting five all at least 3-year varsity performers. As well, two other lettermen: 6-1 senior shooting guard/small forward Clark Etzler and 6-2 sophomore forward Marquavious Wilson will provide either that fifth starter (likely Wilson at this point) or the sixth man. One of the things we do well is shoot the ball. We will also be a good transition team and a good defensive team, Thompson said. We run the swing for our basic offense with many verbals out of it. On defense, we are primarily a man team. However, what we need to work on is addressing a lack of experienced depth at this point and rebounding. We arent a big overall team. Especially with the graduation of the likes of Aric Thompson (6-3), 6-4 defensive stopper Ebin Stratton, 6-3 Trent Long and David Diller. That leaves possibilities for promising newcomers in 6-3, 220-pound senior center Chance Weiss, 6-3 senior power forward/center Caleb Press and 6-0 junior forward Jamil Johnson to make their marks in the new season. Other potential varsity players are junior Garrett Brinkman (6-0 post) and junior Patrick Brockert

The junior varsity unit, headed by Steve Smith, has Brinkman, juniors Jesse Guerrero (5-9 guard), Demere Brown (6-1 guard) and David Fox (6-1 forward); sophomores Masha Luster (5-9 guard), Josh Press (6-2 guard), Brian Upshaw (6-0 guard), Zach Saum (6-0 guard), Torrey Carroll (6-0 forward) and Kyle Moore (6-2 post); and freshmen Jazz Howell (6-3 post), Peyton Smith (5-10 guard), Drew Sarno (5-9 guard) and Baylen Stinson (6-1 forward). Veteran Lady Dawgs ready for 2013-14 hardwood

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA Co-head coaches Elisa Jenkins and Chrissy Billiter sought to restore the Elida girls basketball program to its former glory in their first season a year ago, finishing 9-14 in 2012-13, including 3-6 in the Western Buckeye League. With six returning letterwinners, including four starters, they hope to take another step in this, their sophomore campaigns at the helm, of the Lady Bulldogs. Back for another go-round in the starting five for the Lady Dawgs are third-year senior Torie McAdams (forward), third-year senior Kylie Downton (guard/forward), third-year senior Ashley Lowry (guard) and third-year senior Carly Stetler (forward). Also back for another season under Jenkins/Billiter are third-year senior Cassidy Slusher (guard) and third-year junior guard/forward Sabrina Kline. The lone starter gone from a year ago is Osha Owens (guard), along with fellow graduate Ericka Smith (forward). With a lack of real size throughout the lineup, the Jenkins/Billiter duo hopes to utilize a familiar friend in 2013-14. Were an up-tempo team with a lot

As well, two more newcomers to the varsity wars: junior guard Brett Pauff and sophomore Bailee Kuhn; are expected to fill big-time roles in the lineup off the bench. We hope to finish in the top three in the WBL, Jenkins added. Youthful Elida grapplers prepare for 2013-14

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA F. Kevin Bowers has been in the coaching business: whether one is talking about wrestling, track and field, football or whatever; for a long time. His current stint as the Elida wrestling mentor has had its ups and downs. Last season, his Bulldogs finished 5-26 overall, including 1-8 in Western Buckeye League duals (sixth place), and placed ninth in the Division II Sectionals. He returns six grapplers from that team, including one District qualifier 182 pounds in fourth-year senior Tyler Smith (third at Sectionals, runner-up at WBL, champion at both the Allen County and Coldwater invitationals, runner-up at the Reineke Invitational). He will move up to 195 pounds. As well, sophomore Blaine Hunter (third place at WBLs at 106, champion at Coldwater), sophomore Micah Hartman, sophomore Christian McCarthy (132), sophomore Collin Poling (182) and classmate Jordan Rothermel are the other veterans. In order to make up for the loss of the graduated Austin Arbogast (4year varsity), Nick Pauff (4 years), Nickoli Sackinger (4 years), Dakota Rolfe and Garrett Bell, along with a trio of other experienced matmen that chose not to go out in 2013-14, the coach is breaking down this season with a focus pertinent for each month. In November, according to Bowers, it is ACCOUNTABILITY Starts With YOU! December has Your Future depends on a lot of things!, while in January, it is Your Future mostly depends ON YOU! In February, the motto is Setting STANDARDS, Trust Yourself! and in March, the motto becomes a question Have You Trained Like A State Champion? All of this really means that we have to show up for practice every day with a positive attitude, leave practice as a better person every day, train hard, adapt and overcome, learn and lead every day, Bowers explained. Promising newcomers for this extremely young unit include freshman A.J. Selvaggio (106), freshman Gabe Makin (126) and junior 285-pounder William Legg. We have openings at every other spot, so time will tell. I will challenge our team to finish in the top three but look out for Wapakoneta, Bath, Defiance, St. Marys and Shawnee, Bowers added. Elida is in the Coldwater Sielski Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Long-time assistant Bagley replacing Froelich for Cougar boys

By John Parent DHI Correspondent NEWS@DELPHOSHERALD.COM VAN WERT After 18 seasons working as an assistant under the legendary David Froelich, Mark Bagley gets a chance to put his stamp on the Van Wert boys basketball program in his first season as the head coach. The Cougars are coming off an 1112 record last year and a 3-6 mark in Western Buckeye League play. Not only will they be without Froelich but they will also be without five players from that squad, including A.J. Smith, who was the teams leading scorer, and Joey Hurless, Van Werts career assist leader. The 2013-14 Cougars will look to replace the lost production by spreading the wealth. We dont have one guy thats going to stand out, noted Bagley. We could have a different leading scorer each night. I think five of our eight guys (in the rotation) could average between eight and 12 points per game. The Cougars boast a roster that features eight returning letterwinners, so while the departures from last seasons team are significant, the cupboard is far from bare in Bagleys first season at the helm. These guys like each other a lot, said Bagley of his teams chemistry. Its a very close-knit group. Weve got seven seniors and the underclassmen have been very successful at the JV level, which doesnt always equate to wins at the varsity level, but theyre familiar with each other, they like each other and theyre good teammates. Of course, all the chemistry in the world wont matter if the Cougars cant overcome the height disadvantage their front line will face on most nights in the WBL. Weve got to play fast. Were not overly big; we have young post players and a lot of guards, noted Bagley. Its gotta start with our defensive pressure and tempo. Well probably play a more aggressive style than we have in the past defensively. We have to find a way to score. His team averaged just 51 points per game last year and the pressure defense this season could equate to easier baskets. Teams are going to guard our shooters, so we have to throw the ball inside, whether we score in there or not. We have to be an inside-out team, he remarked. Once we establish an inside post player like (6-4 sophomore) Drew (Myers) and Matt Bidlack, whos a 6-2 post player but also very athletic, thats going to open things up for our guards. Joining Bidlack and Myers are seniors Michael Smelser, Nathan Stoller, Cody Keirns, Kyle Keber, Joey Moreland and Elijah Wortman. Junior letter-winners Nick Keber and Connor Holliday also return and junior Brant Henry and sophomore Colin Smith can also expect to contribute at the varsity level this season.

Cougar grapplers more experienced for coming season

BY JIM COX DHI CORRESPONDENT JMETCALFE@DELPHOSHERALD.COM

2013 The Herald Winter Sports 41

VAN WERT In last years Western Buckeye League wrestling championships, Van Wert had no grapplers competing in the 106-, 113-, 120-, 126-, or 170-pound classes. This put the Cougars behind the eight-ball from the get-go and they finished seventh in the meet and sixth in the league when combined with their 4-5 regular season. Barring injuries or other unforeseen circumstances, that shouldnt happen this time around as the scarlet-and-grays roster includes more of the lower weights, albeit not many. The big question marks are our depth and experience, said head coach Ben Collins. We have about 20 kids right now and with this number, we will be

BY JIM COX DHI CORRESPONDENT NEWS@DELPHOSHERALD.COM

Cougar bowlers look for solid 2013-14

able to fill almost all of the weight classes. However, if we have any injuries or outside problems (grades, discipline, etc.), our team could go from filling most weight classes to not filling many. Van Wert lost four major contributors to graduation, the biggest one being Terin Contreras, the 2-time WBL champ at 285, who ended his career with a 112-37 mark and a school record 94 falls. Also gone is Colten Royer, the 2013 WBL champion at 160, his 99-70 career mark and the school record of 77 reversals. Daniel Thompson finished third at 145 in last years league championships and Jordan Daniels also graduated, leaving a big vacancy at 170. Five experienced wrestlers return, led by two seniors. Zack Thomas was 25-14 last year, finishing third at 220 in the league meet, and Gabe Hill was 18-16 at 182. Three sophomores took their lumps as freshmen

but gained valuable experience. Andy Hammond was 10-20 at 126, Jacob Crisenbery 10-23 at 132 and Ryan Stoller 14-19 at 152. Promising newcomer Tymon Moore at 160 is also a sophomore. The experience of our team will be based largely on our sophomore class, said Collins. If they progress the way we believe they can, we could be a very strong team. Besides Moore, three other newcomers senior Ritchie Espinoza at 113, freshman Jacob Durden at 132 and junior Aaron Fowler at 285 should be major contributors. Our major strength this year is our work ethic, added Collins. The boys are doing a great job of working extremely hard to become successful in wrestling. Progression from the beginning of the season to the end and remaining healthy will be our keys to success. Ben Collins is assisted by Mark Collins, Ed Jacob, Jerry Ramsay, Brad Allmandinger, Austin McIntosh and Cory Hirschy.

VAN WERT The last two bowling seasons have been comparatively lean ones for the Van Wert boys a tie for ninth in 2011-12 (6-9) and a tie for eighth (7-8) in 2012-13 in the 16team West Ohio High School Bowling Conference. That shouldnt happen again in

2013-14 as the Cougars return six solid bowlers. Back are senior Tyrell Eddins (152.7 average/232 high game), senior Andrew Price (160.8/220), senior Jason Zosh (166.2/234), junior Jacob Blackmore (144.9/227), junior Tyler Ruger (154.0/198),and sophomore Joey Kinner (158.3/179). Also on the roster are junior Devin

Moonshower has veteran crew for Lady Cougar cagers

agreed Moonshower. We havent had consistent outside shooting in the half court, so we just want to try to create easier scoring opportunities. The Cougars will use a half-court offense that goes through the post. Well be a good inside-out team. I think we have some good shooters and if we can be a little more consistent in knocking some shots down, well be able to spread the floor a little bit and hopefully open up things on the inside, added Moonshower. If they dont come and double on the post, then well be able to attack them on the inside; if they do (double), we can kick it out to our shooters. Van Wert returns 3-year letterwinner Kaitlynn Hall, as well as fellow seniors Cheyanne Handy, Clair Butler, Emilie Moonshower, Hannah Hulbert and Jenna Weigle. Juniors Alexa Dunlap, Riley Jones and Emily Bair also return for the Lady Cougars. Of that group, only Bair and Jones did not letter last season, though both saw some varsity action. These girls have been around a while and they have a lot of experience, he added. Whats been kind of neat so far is that everybody has been stepping up (and taking on leadership duties). It will be an interesting mix with all those seniors and juniors.

By John Parent DHI Correspondent NEWS@DELPHOSHERALD.COM

VAN WERT The Lady Cougars of Van Wert return a wealth of experience from last seasons 11-13 squad, including a pair of all-Western Buckeye League performers in juniors Erin Morrow and Alexis Dowdy. Morrow, a second-team all-WBL selection in 2012-13, averaged 11.2 points per game and added six rebounds per night. Dowdy, who earned honorable mention as a sophomore, posted four boards per contest while scoring just under 10 points per game. Losing only one letterwinner off last seasons team, the Lady Cougars feature six seniors and five juniors on a team that should be vastly improved from last year. We have really good team speed and we have a lot of depth, noted head coach Lance Moonshower, whose team will play an aggressive pressure defense this season. We wont go full-court all game, every game, but we will mix it in quite a bit and try to utilize our speed. Of course, the goal of that style of play is to not only disrupt the opposing offense, but to create fast-break chances for your own team. We want to get easier shots,

We have really good team speed and we have a lot of depth. We wont go full-court all game, every game, but we will mix it in quite a bit and try to utilize our speed.

Those pins will have to be made up by some improved scores from the four returnees sophomore Madison Wannemacher (134.9 average), sophomore Caitlin Ireland (119.9), junior Dayna Gay (109.8) and junior Celsea Boroff (108.7). The fifth spot in the varsity lineup will be filled by one of three bowlers who are new to the sport freshman Sarah Linser, sophomore Kiara Lamb or sophomore Alisha Mills. Coach Tammy Metzger, who handled the boys team last year, lists the keys to the teams success as hard work, lots of practices and positive attitudes. Both coaches are assisted by Chuck Rollins.

kids who have worked at it through their high school careers, so itll be interesting to watch it play out this year and hopefully they will be rewarded for their hard work. Since the Knights will be returning an unusual amount of experience and leadership, Best spoke about what he expects out of those leaders. We arent going to change our philosophy and some of the things we have set in place over the last 10 years or so but there are some things you can count on those guys to do, Best continued. We do trust them with their leadership to take over the locker room. You count on your seniors to make sure the team meshes and gels together. Theyve been through that before and know how that works, so you count on them to lead some of the underclassmen. Best talked about what he thinks will be one of his teams greatest strengths coming into the season. I think we can be diverse. We think we can get the ball out and run when the opportunity presents itself, Best explained. Something I know we need to get better at and we think we will is to be better in the half-court. We think we can get the ball inside, as well as make some plays out front with our guards. Through that, we hope we can dictate tempo and control games with pushing when we want and execute in the half-court when we want. On the flip side, Best sees one specific area where his team may have some problems in the coming season: One weakness right now is that we are still not the biggest and strongest group, physically. We are skilled but we are going to have to find ways to compensate for when we are up against bigger and stronger teams. Despite the relative lack of size, Best expects to see another very competitive year when it comes to battling for an NWC title:

CONVOY The Crestview Knights look primed for another successful boys basketball season. The Knights will return a good portion of last years team that went 20-4 overall and 7-2 in the Northwest Conference, which was good enough for third in the league behind Lima Central Catholic and Spencerville. Crestview coach Jeremy Best talked about the leadership and experience he will welcome back for the upcoming season. We have the luxury of getting some experience back and thats usually a good thing. Hopefully, those guys got not only a year older, but also a year better, Best said. We dont want to be where we were last year; we want to be better. We have good leadership from our seniors. Rickard returns veteran unit for Lady Knight cagers

baugh and Tara Crowle will return for their junior years and their third year of varsity. Megan Hartman will also play some varsity as a junior, as well as Emily Bauer, who will be a sophomore and started last year for us as a freshman. The Lady Knights will be returning a majority of their team from last year; even though they had a lot of success last season, he expects to see improvement from his team this year. We have a lot of experience coming back and hopefully we got better from last year to this year because we won a lot of close games last year, Rickard continued. You never want to stay stagnant and be as good as you were the year before, especially when you return as much experience as we do. For us, we always stress defense and we werent real good on defense last year. We won 22 games but a lot of those games were close. Weve been talking about how championship teams play defense and if we want to make a long tournament run, we need to be good on defense. With so much experience from last season returning, Rickard said he can already see one of the major strengths for his team coming into this season. From what we have seen, we have pretty very good shooters (returning) and should be a pretty good perimeter team, Rickard pointed out. From the scrim-

Our goal, as always, is to win the conference. There are a lot of teams in our conference that, last year, were young like us and will be bringing back a lot of veteran kids. Itll be real competitive, to say the least. Crestview won a sectional championship last year and went on to the district semifinals where they were defeated by St. Henry 61-51. Many people expect this years team to exceed those accomplishments but Best is only worried about living up to their own standards. This sounds clich but I dont think anyones expectations can be any higher than our own, Best added. People can say what they want about our team and what they expect but what it comes down to is what we know and what we think we can and cant do and, bottom line, that is all that matters. Our kids are the ones putting the work and the effort and I know they give me that all the time.

CONVOY Last year, Crestviews Lady Knights went 22-3 and were Northwest Conference champions, as well as sectional champions before losing in the Division IV district finals. Crestview head coach Greg Rickard spoke about the personnel for 2013-14 team. Senior-wise, we have Kristen Hicks back, this will be her fourth year of varsity basketball and Courtney Grote will also be a senior and this will be her first year of varsity, Rickard explained. Lindsey Motycka, Kennis Mercer, MacKenzie Riggen-

mages and practices so far this season, the shooting has been very good and we can score inside, too, which is nice. The outside and inside presence the Lady Knights have will cause a problem for most of their opponents this season. Last year, we ended with four girls averaging 11 points a game, so its kind of nice because we didnt have that 25-point scorer, Rickard added. If you want to have any success in Northwest Ohio, you need to have depth and balance because there are too many good coaches and defensive teams. They will key in and take down your key weapon and then you have to find a way to respond; having good depth and balance helps with that.
