n the real estate business, and in the retail world, people always say that the three most important factors for success are location, location and location. In healing, health and spiritual work of any kind, the three most important factors are said to be energy, energy and energy. Both statements are correct, but too simplistic. Well skip the discussion about location and focus on energy. Of course, we also have to acknowledge that todays world economy is experiencing an energy crisis, and location has far less meaning than it did 12 months ago when the housing boom began to leak air.
Ancient Wisdom and Quantum Physics Modern quantum theory states that behind matter material reality everything is actually, in essence, comprised of energy that sometimes manifests as particles and other times as waves. The Universe as a whole is one field of energy called by some the zero point. At a more complex level, quantum theory describes many fields of energy, including both electrical and magnetic, which are further characterized by polarity positive and negative. Where fields intersect, as in electro-magnetism, there is an area of interference, also called information. The points of such an intersection create new energy fields that may last a short time or a long time and that may be small or large. Some of those points of intersection have led to the development of all that we perceive and know from immense stars and galaxies down to atoms, quarks and pure information. Ancient wisdom, whether from the East or West (or North or South for that matter), says the same thing in richer metaphoric terms. Essentially, there is energy (prana, chi, the force, etc.) and there is a story (information) about how fields of energy interact to create the universe and to continue to sustain it with a growing complexity of information. The stories are also known as myths, as sacred literature and as allegories. These information packages are read through our consciousness and interpreted by our intelligence.
That doesnt mean we get it right. To put it neatly in a nutshell, we are only human; hence, our ability to read and interpret is limited. Our skill generally improves with training and experience, which is sometimes augmented by intuition or other sources. But most of us have only limited perception of small pieces of material reality and the energy fields behind material manifestations.
The Matrix Another name sometimes used for the basic energy field, or zero point, is The Matrix. A matrix is variously a mold or pattern, or even a womb that governs the formation, possible development and growth of a thing, a plant or a living being. Information packages, as created at the intersection of energy fields, may serve as matrices. Some of these endure for a long time and intersect with others to create new ones. Some are of very short duration, and sort of wink out. A baby is born from a matrix, and its growth and development largely follow the initial pattern established in the information package. Of course that information package results from many other information packages some reaching all the way back to the beginning of it all, while others are closer in succession, like the planetary influences present at the moment of birth. From birth on, the energy field that is the baby intersects with new energy fields from his environment. Some of these are educational, some are nutritional and some affect his health. To a greater or lesser degree, it appears that the initial matrix endures an entire persons life. Some parts of it may even be carried over after physical death as abstractions of life experiences that influence the next birth. The problem is that the life matrix loses its initial charge of energy with age, and parts of the initial information get distorted. The body wears out, gets diseases, functions less efficiently and eventually stops functioning altogether. Is Rejuvenation Possible? Why not? If energy can be restored to the system, and those negative distortions can be cured, it would seem possible at least to whatever age is theoretically part of the initial information package. A French scientist, Alexis Carroll, concluded that age to be 120 years for a human being. The answer for a long and healthy life would seem to lie in systems of energy healing and in new information packages. continued on page 76

help anyone regain and maintain vibrant health, but especially sufferers of chronic illness. It instructs readers in the use of self-hypnosis, guided visualization, energy movement, meditation, shamanic journeying and the psyche inventory in order to boost immune system function and ultimately address the bedrock issues that are the seeds of illness. Energy for Life is an extensive expansion on one essential part of that program. It facilitates a deeper understanding of the energetic nature of the universe and how we, as beings who inhabit such a universe, can tap into the undercurrent of energy available to us. I show the reader how to do this through activities such as guided journeys, meditations, energy connection and advanced energy movement exercises. The companion CD is perfect for this process. Doing the exercises and feeling the energy flow are what is most important. NW: As one reads, one cant help but be struck by the bold cosmology you present in Energy for Life. Where did that come from? CD: My understanding of the nature of the universe is the product of study, exploration through the shamanic journey and insight. One need only read the mythologies of the worlds religions to note their similarities. Strip away the cultural elements and allow for differences in vocabulary and you find the same thing every time. Everything springs from a single energetic source. All form, all thought, all souls, every star, every planet, every person all of it is made from the same stuff. Different shapes, densities and complexities, sure, but basically the same stuff. Listen to the wisdom of the great teachers and sages, strip away the mysticism and our preconceptions, and you find a group of people who were striving to get us to understand, revel in and utilize the energies of the universe. Its well past time for us to claim that birthright. NW: Arent you negating the issues of faith and religion with statements like this? CD: Absolutely not. What I am doing here is providing a consensus point around which we can build a culture of tolerance. How individuals flesh out their belief system is up to them. Do what works for you, but realize that the Muslim, the Jew, the Christian, the Wiccan, the Shaman and all the rest
are just decorating the same gateway to awareness in different ways. Underneath our traditions, we find the same transcendent energy. Every. Single. Time. This book is written for anyone, traditional or non-traditional, who wants to fully embrace the potential of his or her faith. That potential is the unlimited energy inherent in the universe. All faiths admonish us to direct our attention to that. Some do this through prayer, others through dance. All utilize ritual in one form or another. These are all sacred operations designed to focus and direct the unseen energies around us. Energy is the fundamental building
ter on the pain awareness scale because everything became relative to the level of severity. The illness was chronic, and always changing, therefore defying diagnosis and treatment. My life crumbled to mere survival and many days I was unable to get out of bed or function at all. This was so unlike me. Before the illness, I had been so full of energy and enthusiasm for life. I was an active outdoors person, an involved and loving mom, a devoted wife and an exemplary employee. But this monster sucked away my active lifestyle and invisibly sucked away my life force. block of the manifest universe. Ritual focus and direction of universal energy is one of the functions of religion. NW: You have personal as well as professional experience utilizing the techniques detailed in Energy for Life. Would you please tell us about your own healing story? CD: Wow, it seems so long ago now, almost like a different person or different lifetime. But it was me, and though it was very painful and agonizing, it was a powerfully life-changing experience. It began in early 1990. My initial symptoms were troublesome, but it seemed like I just had the flu and that any day it would go away. It didnt. It got worse, much worse. For nearly ten years, I struggled daily with a sore throat, swollen lymph glands, sleeplessness, extreme fatigue, a low-grade fever, below-normal body temperatures in the 97-degree range causing me to feel frozen to my core, headaches, mental confusion and fog, muscle weakness and pain, neurological misfires and depression. And those were just the worst symptoms! The little disturbances didnt even regisgered and worsened, my spirit and passion for life evaporated. I lost my power, my energy to live and I lost my self. After several years and countless visits to the doctor, I was finally diagnosed with Epstein-Barr and cytomegalo virus (both purported causes of CFIDS and fibromyalgia) and advised to go home and rest since there was no treatment. I went nuts! On the drive home, alone in the car, I screamed, Are you crazy? I am a mom, a wife and I have a meaningful career. Not only that, I want energy to have fun in my free time! I cant just go home and rest! I refuse to live my life as a victim of this illness! I tried everything in an attempt to heal. I tried every herb and supplement that claimed to boost the immune system. I received massage, acupuncture, chiropractic work, energy bodywork; you name it, I probably tried it. All of these were very helpful for keeping me functioning, but did not cure this beast of an illness for me. Something was missing, something deeper. Several more years went by and the chronic symptoms worsened still further. I
became deeply depressed, suicidal and gravely ill. I was in pain and freezing all the time. I couldnt take it any more. As shocking as it might sound, if it had not been for my beautiful daughter, I would have taken my own life. I was that desperate. But thanks to her, I reached into the deepest core of my being and found something that helped me stay alive and fight back. At this juncture the competitor in me transformed into the healing warrior, which evolved into the energy/spiritual teacher that I am today. I learned everything I could about alternative healing. I paid attention to what happened to my body when I went to a healing practitioner and I read every book I could get my hands on. Slowly, over time, a pattern became evident to me. The techniques that had lasting effects for me blended awareness, focus, personal intent and energy movement. Over time, I distilled the best things I learned down to their most helpful forms. As I applied these techniques to my life and condition, the improvement was miraculous. Now, those nasty viruses are kept in remission and CFIDS and fibromyalgia are things of the past. I began teaching others to do the same thing for themselves and, by working with them, I refined the program even further. The result can be found in my book Inner Power. Energy for Life takes the energy aspect of healing even further in a powerful program that is equally useful as a means to prevent and heal low energy, fatigue and illness. Addressing energetic imbalances before any physical decline takes place can easily circumvent what happened to me. I want to help others head off illness well before they land in bed. NW: What an inspiring story! Most of us are very busy and just dont feel we have the time or energy. How can we become our own healer when we have so little time to dedicate to ourselves? CD: Most of us have far more time available than we think we do. Its just spent stuck in traffic, waiting in line, watching TV or caught in mind chatcontinued on page 76

The book concludes with directions on how to create an energizing practice. This takes just 15-20 minutes a day, but if youre willing to do it youll be amazed by the vitality you will feel. If you practice for just 30 days you will reignite your essential life force energy and change your life for the better.
Take in a deep breath and relax for a moment. When you are ready begin making sweeping motions with your hands over the surface of your body, brushing away any unwanted or accumulated energetic debris from your auric field. You can touch your body as you brush or brush just above your body. Brush up and down and all around you. Brush over your hair and skin and clothes. Dont forget the top of your head and the bottom of your feet. If you are feeling stress and tension in your upper body take extra time around your shoulders, neck and head. Try this now for as long as you have time and experiment with how it feels. If you are aware and able to feel your energy, it might feel tingly or like a gentle combing. You may also get a sensation similar to when your hair raises. These are ways that you already sense energy. Sometimes this feels familiar and nurturing, like a cat bathing itself. It may also feel foreign or heavy if there is a lot of energy to move or this is a new experience for you. Even though this appears to be an external energy moving exercise, energy will also be moved deep within your body.
nergy, energy, I need more energy! In this over-busy, hyper-stressed modern Western culture, the mantra I hear most is the cry for more energy. We think that if only we had more energy we could complete all of our tasks and responsibilities and still have energy left over for leisure activities. We think if only we had more energy we would not be bored, angry, depressed, anxious, tense, or feel so stuck or lost. We think if only we had more energy we would have the patience to be kinder and gentler with our families instead of lashing out from frustration. We think if only we had more energy we would not feel so sick and tired all the time. We think if only we had more energy when we looked in the mirror we would see a younger, more radiant face rather than the world-weary one we currently see. We are absolutely correct, and having more energy is really much easier than we think. I hear it in the grocery store, post office, airport, restaurants, my workshops and my counseling/healing practice: the voice of energy-depleted people resounds in a buzz of discontent, negativity, imbalance and disharmony. In countries where abundance is evidenced by urban sprawl and SUVs parked on paved city streets, a poverty of a different kind plagues its people. We have forgotten how to connect with energy. As a sufferer of chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome and fibromyalgia for ten years, I did too. The key to my recovery is energy connecting with energy every single day, all throughout the day. It is also the key to your recovery from any malady you are experiencing and the means by which we can all reclaim and maintain vibrant health and well-being. Energy is the essence of life. It is the sustenance that feeds us and is the source that creates a balanced, whole, integrated self of body, mind, emotions and soul. To be whole and healthy we must have ample energy flowing throughout our body and energy system. The concept of connecting with energy is not new, but it has become a lost skill in our post-industrial society, where we are not taught the methods or value of connecting with energy. Millions of people know how to plug in a computer, turn it on and operate it while not knowing how to plug their own energy system in to any of its multiple power sources, turn it on or operate it. Along with losing the know-how to connect with energy, we have also lost the understanding of what energy is and the wisdom of using it for personal and global benefit. Unless a person is a quantum physicist or an energy healer, they probably have only a vague understanding
of what energy is and how it works. It is no wonder we are in such disarray. It pains me to see so many people suffering needlessly when all it takes to be energy-filled is a little intention, focus and know-how. I wrote Energy for Life to help remedy this imbalance. Energy for Life accomplishes this through practical application and education. It is an inspirational guidebook that leads readers through multitudes of easy-to-do, empowering exercises that plug them into their power sources. The accompanying CD makes it easy to connect with energy by practicing dynamic energy movement exercises or relaxing into an altered state of consciousness and journeying to ones sacred healing medicine place. At the same time, Energy for Life takes bold steps in defining and explaining energy in its differing aspects and discusses the consciousness of energy as no other book on the market. Do you wonder what the differences are between personal energy, life force energy and source energy? Did you know that energy is conscious and intelligent? Allow this book to enlighten you. Page by page, the doors of understanding will open as you learn practical skills to manifest powerful energy in your everyday life. Through succinct explanation, step-by-step instructions and revitalizing exercises you will learn about energy, activate your own personal life force energy, release blockages, stop energy leakages and power up through direct connection with universal life force, spiritual and source energies. Functional ideas for application and easy integration of the exercises are included to help you manifest vitality simply. Feeling vibrant and full of abundant energy is your natural state of being. The exercises in this book and CD are a sure bet for a healthier, happier, more energy-filled life. Come on, havent you struggled long enough? Plug into the passion of being alive and connect with the world of energy within and around you!
lthough technically the days are already growing shorter, July and August are undoubtedly the most summery months of year, when the weather gets really sweltering and people crave cool drinks, barbecue, playful games and sports, and lounging outside watching the stars on balmy nights. As long as the sun is shining, use it! This is the growing season for both plants and many kinds of animals, who use the strong rays of the sun to develop and thrive. Soak it in while its here and you too will find an abundance of positive energy you can apply to any aspect of your life. Its also a great time to socialize and party.
Tap into real sun magic with Dorothy Morrison; shes written a whole book on it! When the sun is in Leo (July 23-Aug. 22), she writes in Everyday Sun Magic, Its time to go out and play, and the Leo Sun begs us to do just that. It doesnt have to twist our arms, though, since we know its time for a break. Weve worked hard, and we deserve a little fun. But Leo beckons us way beyond that. It brings on the urge to entertain to take center stage and to throw one hell of a party. That being the case, we find ourselves turning outward once again, meeting new people, visiting with the neighbors and socializing more. We look up old

Burn this incense at your Lammas ritual, or at any time that you want to bring about the energies and insights of Lammas. 1/2 handful of oak (wood), either powdered or chips 1/2 handful of powdered sandalwood 2 teaspoons frankincense 1 teaspoon dried oats (such as rolled oats for oatmeal) Vegetable glycerin 5 drops patchouli essential oil 2 drops rosemary oil In a medium-sized bowl, place your powdered sandalwood. Stir in about two tablespoons of the vegetable glycerin. Add the glycerin one tablespoon at a time and then mix with a metal whisk or a fork. You simply want to create a soft, fluffy compound. Do not add the second tablespoon of glycerin if it feels like it would be too much, causing the incense to be too wet. Now add your essential oils and whisk. Add your other dried herbs and mix thoroughly. Wait for at least a day for the compound to settle before you sprinkle it on hot coals.

Corn symbolizes the life of the land and its cycles. Here is a sunny and spicy dish for celebrating the first harvest, perfect for a feast. In celebration of the Grain God, support your local brewers and purchase a fine assortment of ales, lagers and stout. Offer red and white wines in honor of the grape harvest. Add some music and dancing and you may find Dionysus himself among your guests! 4 cups water Sea salt 1 cup stone-ground polenta cornmeal 1-2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1-2 jalapeo peppers, cored, seeded, sliced 1 onion, diced 1 small sweet pepper, cored, seeded, sliced 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes 1 cup good jarred marinara sauce 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 4-6 ounces feta or chvre goat cheese, sliced 1/4 teaspoon fennel 2 cans (16 ounces each) black beans, drained, rinsed Note: I have discovered a quick-cooking polenta, sold in bulk at my local health food market, that cooks up in 10 minutes and is absolutely delicious. It may be worth your while to investigate your local markets, especially if you adore polenta as much as I do. The cooking time that follows is for the original-style polenta. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Pour the water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add a pinch of sea salt. Measure the cornmeal in a glass measuring cup and begin to pour the polenta into the boiling water, keeping a steady stream and stirring constantly as you pour. (I like to use a whisk to keep the lumps at a minimum.) Turn the heat down to low so as not to burn the polenta and keep stirring, smoothing out any lumps. Gently cook for 20 minutes, stirring regularly, keeping it smooth and creamy. The polenta is done when it begins to pull away from the sides of the pan. Pour this cornmeal mush out onto a clean cutting board, mounding it into a long oval shape. Or, if you prefer, pour it into a shallow, oiled baking pan. Set aside to cool. In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil and saut the onions. Cook gently until onions begin to soften, about 5 minutes. Add the peppers, garlic and chili powder, stir and saut for 5-10 minutes. Add in the chopped tomatoes, marinara sauce and herbs. Stir the ingredients together and remove from heat. Set your oven to broil. Slice the cooled polenta loaf into pieces about 1-inch thick (or if you have cooled the polenta in a pan, you may cut it into triangles). Lay the slices in an oiled baking or broiling pan. Brush lightly with olive oil and gently broil the polenta until it browns at the edges. Remove the pan from the oven. Layer your black beans over the broiled polenta slices. Next layer your tomato mixture. Top with the feta cheese slices. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until it is hot and bubbly. Serves 4.

ts a strange experience for a writer to be peeking into other peoples bedrooms. Not literally, of course, but through the case studies I choose to include in my books. Tackling the topics of love, lust, relationships and fertility this time around meant that I needed to cajole those brave souls who were willing to be my magical guinea pigs. Asking a couple to trust you to improve their sex life, or to trust you at the worrisome time prior to undergoing IVF, is a big request. Thankfully, I was able to convince a number of wonderful people across three continents to do just that. When I first decided to write about the Witchs Way as it applies to these areas, it was important to me to ensure that at its heart it had integrity, truth
and a distinctly modern take. It is a recurring theme in my work to take the ancient wisdom of Witches and apply it to modern problems. Witches have always been good in the bedroom! We are able to assist when it comes to building a solid personal foundation, attracting the right partner, keeping the lust alive, and even when it comes to cleanly breaking the bonds when a relationship goes sour. We know, through our vast herbal and nature-based wisdom, which plant to use to balance hormones and which ones get the juices flowing. Our whole spiritual practice is based around creation and pleasure (which is in contrast to many other mainstream religions), and so Witches, I believe, are in a prime position to influence matters of the heart and body in significant ways.
I didnt want Witch in the Bedroom to be just another spell book. My intention wasnt to instruct anyone on how to turn their boyfriend into a frog or show how to curse that nasty ex. Rather, I wanted it to demonstrate how through the Witchs Way the reader can attract and keep an ideal partner, build a greater connection with their partner, ramp up their sensual pleasure and even conceive more easily, if thats their desire. I purposely delve into the nitty-gritty issues, such as co-dependence and sexual disassociation, because they are such common complaints in todays world. I am often asked by budding writers how to construct a book of this complexity. I always advise them to set a firm skeleton and then to write about whatever excites them. With both Witch

With a fresh, pleasurable approach, Witch in the Bedroom heralds the blissful approach to passing on love through tradition.
in the Bedroom and Witch in the Boardroom, it was difficult to write in an orderly, timely fashion, as each case study really matured within its own timeframe. So, in a way, putting a book together is almost like constructing a jigsaw puzzle piece by piece, it forms a whole that is (hopefully) pretty much what you have planned and envisaged. The writing process for me is both practical and deeply spiritual. When I am writing the various rituals and
spells in particular, I definitely lose track of time and enter a state of deep flow. It is at these times that I am very much aware of being connected to the Goddess, and that it is certainly a co-creative process. After the ritual is recorded, I will then normally take a break, take a walk or do something a little different to ground myself, and will then be able to take a second look with a more practical perspective. This book has certainly been a per-
sonal journey, and an inspiring one. Through the people I have worked with, and through the Goddesss guidance, I have learnt much. I hope to pass this information on to those who may find value in it. I know that my relationship with my Self, and certainly with my partner, has been elevated to another level through the process of writing this book.
Self Knowledge
What are my strengths? What are my vulnerabilities? What do I fear? What am I attracted to? What do I value? Why am I here?
nowing yourself well enough is integral to your purpose. Self knowledge begins by answering and asking the easy and hard questions. Take a look at this list below for starters. Can you answer these questions clearly or do they need further investigation and consideration? How many can you answer clearly without mentioning your traditional roles or using labels such as wife, mother, sister, husband, job title, profession ?
Who do I believe myself to be? What do I really love? Do I experience what makes my heart sing?
Answering these questions carefully and truthfully may lead to further ones keep delving as you evolve and progress. Participation and movement are the rewards of superior self knowledge.

he very words celtic and magic seem to fit together. Tales of mischievous fairies, brave warriors, powerful deities and dangerous trips to the Otherworld abound in the bits of Celtic legend and folklore that survived successive waves of invasion and conquest. The heritage of the Celts lives on in the blood, but remains even stronger in the imagination. Many people feel drawn to explore the rich mythology and mystery of this deep-rooted culture. As with all magical systems, it is what is in your heart and soul not your genetic heritage that will gently lead your magical explorations. The path of the Celts is open to anyone who feels drawn to its ancient power. The Celts once settled expanses from Turkey to the British Isles, and produced lavish traditions seen through fine craftsmanship and refined art. Their ways are steeped with undercurrents of legend and faith, visible in the practices of their priest class, the Druids and Druidesses. Religion was fundamental to their lifestyle, and the complex mythology that perme-
ates Celtic lore can be found in books like Celtic Magic by D.J. Conway and Celtic Myth & Magick by Edain McCoy. Magicallyinfused spirituality and day-to-day life work in tandem within this heritage, and these books detail indivisible threads that weave the cultural tapestry of the Celts. Goddess worship is at the center of Celtic belief, and feminine energy is infused in all existing branches of Celtic spirituality. From the cycles of the day, the moon and the seasons to the reproductive cycle of women, the fertile power of Brigit, Maeve, Guinevere and others can be wrought. The sacred union of the Goddess and the God is at the heart of many nature-based rituals of Celtic magical work. Both cauldron and athame are symbols of this powerful interaction. For a detailed description of underlying principles of feminine divinity within Celtic history, reference Celtic Womens Spirituality by Edain McCoy. In regions across Europe and Asia, different lineages practiced differing crafts, as can be seen in Raymond Bucklands Scottish Witchcraft & Magick. The Scottish Highlands were once
The following spells are excerpted from Celtic Magic by D. J. Conway. If you do not own a cauldron, use a large dark-colored bowl.
To Gain Money
Fill the cauldron half-full of water and drop a silver coin into it. Position the cauldron so that the light from the Moon shines into the water. Gently sweep your hands just above the surface, symbolically gathering the Moons silver. While doing this, say: Lovely Lady of the Moon, bring to me your wealth right soon. Fill my hands with silver and gold. All you give, my purse can hold. Repeat three times. When finished, pour the water upon the Earth. This is best done at the Full Moon.

inhabited by a people known as the Picts. In fact, the area was called Pictland and did not become known as Scotland until the eleventh century! Scottish Celts have uniquely identifiable characteristics that distinguish them from the Celts of Ireland and ancient Gaul. PectiWita, or Pictish Witchcraft, can be classified as its own set of beliefs, and is understood within this text from descendants of the Carnonacae tribe of Picts. It includes descriptions of power raising and of the magically potent forms of song and dance. The Celtic Otherworld is where inhuman entities, spirits, gods and goddesses reside, and a personal relationship with these places and beings is essential to understanding Celtic culture and magic. Magic of the Celtic Otherworld describes spiritual attachments to our physical world, and highlights how the lore and rituals of the Celts bridge the gap. Elemental forces, tribes of spiritual guides and energies of nature chronicle the consciousness of Celtic ways. Druid Power by Amber Wolfe is a shining example of how looking beneath the surface of Celtic heritage will reveal deepseeded patterns of spirit, regenerative magical intent and living ancient lore. As you read of languages like the Ogham that developed from natures own communicative strategies, and of underlying spiritual currents found within the natural develoments of our modern world, you will unmask the true identity of the Celts. Once discovered, the power of this influence will reveal itself in every aspect of life. Its potential should not be ignored.

Frameworks for
Goddess Imagery
here are several theoretical frameworks that have been used to analyze [the Goddess]. One of the most familiar is the triple goddess, who usually appears as Maiden and Mother and Crone. Such goddesses are found in ancient art: the Celtic Brigid and the pre-Greek Hera, for instance, were seen as tri-form goddesses. Three is a sacred number in such cultures and the triplicity of goddesses reinforces, and is reinforced by, that sacredness. There is much to commend the use of the triple goddess as a framework for goddess study. But as Cybill Shepard complained in one memorable episode of her television series, Cybill, Maiden, Mother, Crone leaves something out. The comedian found her own name for the missing aspect, invoking the goddess as, Maiden, Mother, Cheerleader, Crone. In doing so, she put her finger on what is left out in the conventional triple goddess series: the vision of the goddess as sexually active. (No reference to the activities of current, former or potential cheerleaders is intended.) Using a four-part framework, we will therefore refer to the goddess as: Mother, Daughter, Lover and Crone, and will examine images of the goddess in those forms as well as their relevance to womens life cycles. It should be noted that these energies are available to women throughout their lives.

he Llewellyn Tarot is making its debut in this issue of New Worlds. Anna-Marie Ferguson, creator of Legend: The Arthurian Tarot, developed this stunning deck especially for Llewellyn to honor the Welsh heritage of Llewellyn George, who founded the company in 1901. Anna-Marie Ferguson, creator of Legend: The Arthurian Tarot, developed this stunning deck especially for Llewellyn. It honors the Welsh heritage of both Llewellyn George, and Llewellyn Worldwide, the company George founded in 1901. In this signature 78-card deck, Ferguson weaves stories into the Major Arcana from the Mabinogion, a collection of medieval Welsh myths. Painted in watercolor, each card has distinct art that brings these Welsh tales to life while remaining true to the traditional divinatory meanings of the tarot. Once you hold these beautiful cards and see them up close, youll find yourself magically transported into a mystical land with romantic characters who entice you to learn the stories of their dreams, desires and disappointments all in a time before Camelot. The Llewellyn Tarot, designed for both beauty and practicality, comes with a gold-beaded bag you can use to store the cards and a book that includes both time-honored interpretations of the tarot cards plus enchanting Welsh stories that further ornament the traditional meanings. Additionally, two new spreads are included with The Llewellyn Tarot: Llews Spread, used for
bringing illumination to a situation, and the Red Dragon Spread, used for overcoming obstacles. Each spread is printed on its own card, making it easy to follow and interpret, without having to prop open a book. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced tarot reader, The Llewellyn Tarot will inspire your imagination, expand your insights and enliven your readings. Some of my favorite cards in The Llewellyn Tarot are The Lovers, alternately titled The Dream of Macsen; The Hanged Man, named Enchantment of Dyfed; and The Moon, called Lake of Maidens. good place to start in your healing journey is The Star card. It is the archetype for healing in the standard tarot deck. In fact, you might want to choose a deck that has a Star card you are particularly drawn to. Meditating on the image in the card may be all you need to experience the healing you desire. Here are a few interpretations of The Star card from some of our tarot experts: In her book Seeker, Rachel Pollack offers her description of The Star card. It symbolizes hope and optimism, an openness to life and other people. It also

shows us someone unashamed, someone comfortable with her body. The Star card is a kind of antidote to shame. Teresa Michelson, author of The Complete Tarot Reader, assigns specific meaning to The Star card. Here she gives herself up into the hands of a higher power: her religion, a twelve-step program, her doctor, and/or friends and family who want to help. At this point, she may feel stripped bare, relatively helpless and naked, but with hope for a better future. Steven Walter Sterling in Tarot Awareness explains the various meanings of the Star card in a reading:
In the book Tarot Shadow Work, Christine Jette describes the shadow of The Star card this way: The Stars Shadow:
Denying the reality of a situation or issue F ailing to recognize your talents and abilities Feelings of despair Loss of hope Loss of self-esteem Getting lost in wishful thinking, fantasy, or idealism Pessimism and lacking faith Seeing life as pointless Failure to open to both inner and outer truths Failing to align with higher consciousness Lack of self-confidence

tured in the next issue of New Worlds. The myths and stories conveyed in decks like The Llewellyn Tarot are meant to help us understand the joys and struggles of being human. Because this issue of New Worlds focuses on healing and rejuvenation, it is only fitting to explore the ways that tarot cards can facilitate this process. When working on sensitive issues either for yourself or others, make sure to select the right deck for the healing youd like to bring about. Some people prefer subtle images in subdued colors to convey the message while others seek vivid images in bold hues to rejuvenate them. Although it is always a good idea to clear your deck regularly, it is especially important to do so before and after using a deck for healings. The methods for cleansing your cards are as varied and numerous as the decks out there. Some people smudge their decks with incense or sage bundles, others wrap them with special crystals or stones and place them in the light of the Full Moon, while others use chimes or a special tuning bowl to remove any energetic residue left behind from the reading. Whatever method you choose, incorporate it into your healing process by symbolically purifying yourself before and after the reading. Purify before the reading to open yourself up to possible ways the healing may come about, and purify after the reading to release any memories or beliefs that no longer serve you. Two great books to get you started on your healing journey are Tarot Shadow Work by Christine Jette and Tarot Spells by Janina Rene. Jettes book shows both how to release past hurts and how to accomplish the soul work involved in embracing the shadow and finding the light within. In Tarot Spells, there are a variety of meditations and spreads especially created for healing matters. May all your readings be good ones!
nother way to utilize tarot cards for healing and rejuvenation is to use special spreads specifically designed for that purpose. The card positions in these spreads will focus on healing from many different angles. As you lay out the cards, pay close attention to see if any patterns arise. Cups reflect emotional matters, Wands relate to our spirit and will, Swords depict the state of our thoughts and the messages we receive, and Pentacles portray the physical world including our bodies, finances and the tangible support we receive from others. Whenever a Major Arcana card shows up in a spread, its position shows the place where the spiritual aspects of our healing are addressed. The Heart of Healing Spread helps you find your own unique path to healing.
Creating a Change Spread is from the Shapeshifter Tarot and is useful when you are having trouble finding your way out of a difficult situation or old patterns. 1 Present situation that needs change
2. Foundation personal reason for the change 3. Physical action 4. Attitude adjustment 5. Foundation what cannot be changed 6. Situation after the change
You can also design your own spreads. If this process appeals to you, start by spending some time free writing about your situation. Carefully read through what you wrote, circling phrases or words that express what type of healing this issue indicates for you. Then let your creativity take over to design the spread. What shape will the layout of the cards form? A circle, line, row, triangle ? How many cards will you include? Are you focusing on healing your emotions, thoughts, body, spirit or all of the above in this reading? Make sure you designate at least one card in your spread for unseen factors or forces that are related to your healing. Remember that if you knew everything already, you wouldnt be consulting the cards! Take your time interpreting the cards and record the reading in some way. You could take a picture of it, write it down or use an audio device to record it. Dont expect to understand the full meaning of the reading right away. It could take days, weeks, months or longer to truly see all the facets of your reading unfold. The word healing, like spirituality, is often thought of as a state of perfection. Dont limit yourself to unobtainable standards or beliefs. Our desire to heal includes accepting any perceived or real flaws.

ike most people who first begin to take up studies in magic and suddenly find themselves attracted to the cards of the tarot, we originally thought that the primary use of tarot cards was for divination to see into future events and try to determine what fate had in store for us. Like others before us, we learned early in our esoteric studies that a tarot reading was not just a snapshot of some unalterable destiny; a tarot reading simply provides the reader with tools to help analyze a specific situation or problem and offers a possible solution. Because human beings have free will, we are in charge of our own destiny. The tarot simply offers us another perspective, usually a higher perspective. We can choose to follow the
road map that a tarot reading provides us, or we can choose to not follow it. It wasnt long before we discovered that the cards have many other uses besides divination. Ceremonial magicians have long utilized the cards for skrying, astral projection, pathworking and ritual magic. The most wide-spread use of tarot cards in the Western mystery schools is as symbols for meditation and gateways into higher states of consciousness. The cards of the tarot provide powerful focal points for spiritual growth. However, every card of the tarot is also attributed to a specific magical force that the magician can invoke to accomplish his or her goals. Magic has been described as the science and art of causing change to
occur in conformity with will. One of the practices that ceremonial magicians often engage in is the creation of talismans. A talisman can be defined as any physical object that has been consecrated with magical energies toward the achievement of a given purpose. It is considered a lifeless object before the magician magically breathes life into it by charging it with specific energies that are often astrological or qabalistic in nature. A charged talisman stores and radiates a magical energy to create change, and it is usually consecrated to attract something of a positive or beneficial nature such as monetary gain, protection, friendship, spiritual growth, knowledge, healing or a needed skill. Any object can be used and conse-
The second part of this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the angels and archangels associated with the cards of the Tarot. The authors examine, in detail, the nature and function of each of these divine beings, and reveal the secrets to invoking their energies through the Golden Dawn method of telesmatic magic. Tarot Talismans presents new ways to expand your knowledge and practical use of the Tarot with step-by-step instructions on using Tarot magic to get a promotion, develop psychic talent, promote healing, mend a broken friendship, enhance magic skills and more. It elevates the cards to powerful and effective magical tools that can help you to make positive changes in your life and in the lives of family and friends.

crated as a magical talisman: gemstones, jewelry, tools, wands, etc. Magicians often create their own talismans out of paper or parchment inscribing the talisman with the names and sigils of the particular force desired. And yet most magicians already own 78 readymade talismans that are associated with virtually every spiritual force imaginable the cards of the tarot. A complete deck of tarot cards embodies a wondrous realm of divine powers and astrological energies that can be invoked through ritual, consecrated as talismans and charged for any desired purpose. One of the hallmarks of ceremonial magic is the practice of working with spiritual entities what the ancient Platonists called gods and intelligences, and what modern magicians call archangels and angels. Angels are spiritual beings that are considered to be specific aspects of God, each with a par-
ticular purpose and jurisdiction. The word angel comes from the Greek angelos, which is itself a translation of the Hebrew word melakh, meaning messenger. They have been described as messengers of the soul. The names of many angels end in the suffixes -el or -yah which are god-names. Since they are recognized as being in the service of God, it is only natural that working with these divine beings plays a major role in the transformative work of high magic. The magician always invokes the highest divine names first, and then proceeds to invoke the corresponding archangels and angels, right down the chain of command. Since each card of the tarot is associated with specific divine powers, including archangels and angels, these spiritual beings are called upon to consecrate the cards, transforming them from mere divinatory tools into potent magical talismans
designed to attract the powers that they represent. Many of the tarot angels are known to us only through their astrological attributes and functions, as described in medieval grimoires and more recent magical texts. Other than the most well-known archangels of the elements (Raphael, Gabriel, Michael and Uriel), few other angels and archangels have been described in graphic detail. This has made it difficult for magicians to visualize what images of these angels might look like. Since visualization plays such an important role in the practice of magic, this has always been a problem. To remedy this, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn developed a practice called telesmatic magic. This system of magic gets its name from the Greek word telesmata, which means continued on page 76

arot meditation and study illuminates certain tendencies and potentials inherent in the seekers character. If the seeker applies the power of concentration to the imagery in the card or cards at issue, hidden influences will reveal themselves, allowing the Inner Self to communicate more clearly to the seekers consciousness. From birth our consciousness, our personality, our entire energy field is affected by various karmic, celestial and sensual influences. Fortunately, human consciousness was given basic free will to focus or not to focus and, as a result, we remain free at our core. Thats why Tarot likes to offer choices. Do I heed or reject the warning? Is all the effort really worth it? Has the time come for me to change this obnoxious behavior? We can keep the glass polished and sparkling, or we can splatter it with mud. Spirit provides us with the choice. As we experience Life, if we are in alignment with Spirit, our choices will reflect the harmony of that relationship. If not, we approach the question with typical human near-sightedness. And thats where our study and meditation can be of great benefit because Tarot raises a lantern aloft and casts a light on the various angles of the question. Examining consciousness with Tarot as our guide, along with faith and good works, we continue along the Golden Path which is another way of saying that only through awareness and application do we advance toward the goal. Tarot, a profound tool for observing ourselves, helps clear the way for ultimate realization of the compassionate power of the Inner Self, Spirits love unfolding.

old on Didnt I just get here? It wasnt too long ago that I introduced myself in this column. Now, its goodbye for me and for the column. Its not a bad sort of goodbye, though more like a prelude to an exciting hello. Llewellyn is heading in a new and exciting direction with its young adult publishing program. Beginning this fall, Llewellyn will present the majority of its juvenile offerings under a new teen fiction imprint, Flux. The teen books Llewellyn has published in the past five years have allowed the company to carve out a place in this exciting and fastgrowing sector of the book industry. The success of all of Llewellyns young-adult authors has made it clear that the time is right for the next step, and that step is Flux. Flux will publish 20 new titles a year, all aimed at the young adult audience (12 to 18 years old). Unlike Llewellyns previous teen offerings, which tended to focus on all things spooky, witchy and weird, Flux will cast a broader net. Dont worry. Well still publish the great spooky, paranormal titles like Laurie Faria Stolarzs Blue Is for Nightmares and Claudia Jones Riding Out the Storm, but well also bring out books in other genres. Fluxs first offering includes great realistic literary fiction, chick lit, dark fantasy, sci-fi and plenty more. Youll see some familiar faces in Flux as well as some exciting new voices in teen fiction. Fluxs mission will be to publish teen fiction that takes risks and explores all aspects of teen experiences from around the world. No punches will be pulled. No prisoners taken. Teen readers know what they want and they arent afraid to take risks in their reading habits. Young adult isnt a reading level, after all, its a point of view. If you havent checked out the teen section in your local bookstore, you might want to. Its an exciting place to be. Flux has its very own Web site, and in light of this progressive development, Im following suit with my editorial. Which means that my column wont be a regular part of New Worlds anymore, but I encourage you to check out Fluxs own Web site at www.fluxnow.com. Not only will you find out about the fabulous authors and great books in Fluxs first catalog, but youll find me (I told you it wasnt goodbye). The site will feature a blog, written and moderated by myself. Ill do my best to post entries regularly with the inside scoop about Flux books, teen publishing and anything else that might tickle my fancy. And, lest you all get tired of me too soon, I will regularly turn the blog over to authors, my fellow editors, cover designers and, naturally, readers. Well cover all the books and keep you up to date on interesting developments (and, when nobody is looking, Ill try to pull back the curtain on the sometimes esoteric process of book publishing). While Flux will be the home of all future teen fiction for Llewellyn Worldwide, Llewellyn Publications will continue to bring out excellent non-fiction Mind-Body-Spirit titles for the teen market from time to time. Thus, the addition of Flux to Llewellyn represents an exciting new direction and hopefully a strong addition to the company.

Fluxs first catalog will feature seven new titles and an exciting collection from an old favorite.
How Its Done, the YA debut of childrens book author Christine Kole MacLean, is a beautifully written and keenly observed coming-of-age story about what happens when all the rules get broken. Bonnie Dobkins first novel is Dream Spinner, a darkly imaginative vision of the thin border between wakefulness and dreams, reality and fantasy. The Shalamar Code is the sixth novel of Mary Louise Clifford. Clifford offers a fast-paced thriller set in modern-day Pakistan involving drugs and international intrigue. Mystery author Nina Wrights initial foray into YA is Homefree, the story of a clever girl in an awkward situation. Shes got it under control, except for one thing she has the irritating habit of astral projecting into the private lives of her friends. Fantasy fans will want to check out the first book in Terie Garrisons DragonSpawn Cycle, AutumnQuest. Garrison brings an intricate and complicated world with compelling characters to this new fantasy series. Derailed is the latest book from experienced novelist Jon Ripslinger. Ripslinger exercises his pen with a young man on the cusp of the rest of his life, when just a few decisions can mean so much, including life and death. How to Ruin a Summer Vacation is chick lit like youve never seen it. Simone Elkeles takes the best of chick lit the clothes, the romance and the attitude and sets them in the one place youve never imagined them. Blue Is for Nightmares: The Collection brings all four of Laurie Faria Stolarzs wildly popular novels together in one boxed set.
[Shanara] and Oracle knew that they could never take the chance that the Three might return. If they did, the Diadem would be plunged back into abject slavery and misery. So they had prepared a trap, just in case a trap that even the great powers of Pixel, Score and Helaine couldnt defeat. Shanara had felt as if she was betraying the youngsters even by planning the trap, and she had prayed desperately that it would never need to be used. But now Oracle was saying that they had no other option. They had to spring the trap that was meant to kill the three young magicians Do we have to? Shanara asked, so softly her voice was almost lost. To save the worlds we have no choice You must give the magics voice. Prepare the trap, all set to fall Or else its ruin for us all.
Book of Doom, the latest entry in John Peels Diadem: Worlds of Magic series, nds Score, Helaine, Pixel and Jenna in their most dangerous situation ever! Nantor Pixels ancient evil self has taken over Pixel except for a small part of his mind. If Score and Helaine are taken over by their wicked alter egos, it would mean the devastating return of the Three Who Rule. To prevent this, their friends Oracle and Shanara set up a deadly trap for the good of everyone despite how hard it is for them to actually follow through with the plan. But already, the magic that holds the Diadem together is failing. When the Overmind, ruler of Calomir, realizes that magic rules the Diadem, he plants a chip in Helaines head. This way, he can

try and gain access to her powers and to portals leading to other worlds. Meanwhile, Score has been magically transported to a planet where the deadly plants kill and eat everything that lives. Lasting longer than a half hour would be a miracle. Will they be able to work together and x the magical imbalances of the Diadem, or will corruption take hold and destroy everything Pixel, Helaine, Score and Jenna have worked for? With their magic fading fast, they must unite and use every ounce of wit if there is to be any hope of salvation. The end is one you will never forget.

ll fiction writers owe a great debt to the fiction writers who they in turn have read. As authors, great stories weve read have inspired us to create the worlds we invent perhaps not directly, but at the very least because the imaginations of older writers have sparked our own creativity. I was a voracious reader as a child growing up in England (and I still am sometimes nothing ever changes), and I loved books by the likes of C.S. Lewis, E. Nesbit and H. Rider Haggard stories filled with magic and adventure and far-off, exotic lands. Its hardly surprising, then, that I love my own invented worlds of the Diadem filled with magic, adventure and very far-off lands. Ive been busily creating new versions of the sort of stories I always loved to read. Ive never taken anything directly from any of these authors, of course, with one exception. In Book of Doom, the tenth volume of the Diadem series, I deliberately created a world as a tribute to one man, Terry Nation. I owe him a great deal, because he helped me to launch my writing career, initially quite indirectly, but later, when I met him, very directly. As a child in England, I grew up watching a science fiction TV series called Doctor Who. Its about a group of travelers who can go anywhere in time and space, and they got into all sorts of wild adventures on the way. Terry wrote their very second story, introducing a race of aliens called the Daleks. The Daleks were hideous mutations who lived inside machines that basically made them into mobile tanks. The Daleks became wildly popular the Harry Potter phenomenon of their day and I was one of the people who fell under the spell. As a youngster, some of the very first stories I ever wrote were new adventures of the Daleks. Terrys monsters had helped to spark my creativity.
28
Over 20 years later, my first published book was about the Daleks, and I got to meet and work with Terry. He was an amazingly generous and helpful man who encouraged my writing career and offered me very good advice. (My favorite was: If an editor asks you if you can write anything, always say yes, no matter what it is. Then go away and panic. And then write it. He followed that advice himself, and Ive had some fascinating experiences in taking the advice to heart.) If you check out my Web site, www.john-peel.com, youll see that Ive written several novels based on the Daleks, thanks to Terry. I grew up and wrote as an adult what I had written as a child. So I owed Terry a great deal, and it seemed to me that it would be fun to include an homage to him in one of the Diadem novels. One thing that Terry seemed to enjoy tremendously was the idea of a living jungle, where the plants act like animals. They can move about, sometimes quickly, and be quite aggressive and lethal. The idea turned up time and time again in his stories. If you think about it, it is quite scary everyone expects animals to be fast and filled with teeth and so on, but to have plants that can do that? We have Venus Flytraps, which eat insects, but the idea of ones big enough to attack and eat people is frightening. More than one horror story has featured such plants. It seemed to me, then, that having a planet where the plants are the hunters would be a nice tribute to Terry. Therefore, in Book of Doom, poor Score finds himself betrayed by the people he trusted, stranded on a jungle world where everything eats everything else, and he becomes the menu for all of the local plants. And its all thanks to Terry Nation! Im sure Score will be really grateful to my mentor for that! The only sad part about the story is
Appetite
On this planet, any insects or birds wouldnt be pollinating theyd be eaten. So there was no need for flowers. Score found himself wishing for just a splash of color to relieve the unending shades of green. Green Plants were green because they contained chlorophyll. And that made food for the plant from sunlight. So the plants here still made their own food Yet they also ate anything that came within reach. Then he understood why because chlorophyll made energy slowly. And these plants all seemed to move pretty fast so they needed a quicker source of energy, which generally meant eating other living things. It sounded like a circular sort of reasoning the plants here were fast because they need to catch food and the food they caught enabled them to move fast. It was a hellish world. And one hed been deliberately sent to by people hed always believed were his friends.
that it is the final volume of the Diadem series. Ive tried to tie up some of the ongoing storylines in this book, but theres still a lot left to explore. But thats for another time, and who knows? Maybe Diadem will inspire some younger readers out there to sit down and write their own adventures of Score, Helaine, Pixel and Jenna. And perhaps, when they grow up, Ill be their influence! It would be rather appropriate, wouldnt it?
m glad I broke into writing with a trilogy. Ive learned some of the most difficult rules of writing this way, and I actually look to future projects with relief, knowing Ive experienced one of the most complex types of storytelling. When I wrote my first fantasy novel, Escape from Arylon, I knew full well that I would be unable to chronicle the complete adventures of the two teen protagonists, Ainsley and Megan, in one book. I knew there would be questions left unanswered, relationships left in limbo and enemies still undefeated. What I didnt know was how much effort would actually have to go into writing the sequel. Im not referring to the plot here. I knew what the follow-up novel, Curse of Arastold, was going to be about, but there were all sorts of nuances that had to be taken into consideration. For example, because I have lived and breathed these characters for the last five years, I know who they are, where they come from and all their sordid little secrets. I know the events that have befallen them throughout the previous book, but I forget that my audience may not. In the midst of grocery lists and summer vacations, my readers might not remember why Megan is skilled with a sword or how Ainsley came to carry healing salve that smells like wet dog. There can also be the reader who happens across the second story without having experienced the first one. I dont do this with books, but I have done it with movies, and it makes the story much more enjoyable if you have some idea of what has happened in the past. So began the difficult process of reintroducing the characters and earlier plot points without having it all read like Cliffs Notes. I decided to throw in brief summaries here and there, but since I couldnt very well rewrite the whole book, a few insignificant items remain unexplained as inside jokes for those who will understand.
Once the recollection of the story returned to them, however, I knew the audience would expect me to stay loyal to the personalities theyd become familiar with. This meant I couldnt deviate from the typical behavior of my characters without a logical explanation, despite how much more interesting it would be if a particular character suddenly turned cold-hearted. So, I had to make sure the characters stayed true to their origins yet maintained an appeal by revealing further tidbits that would make the audience feel more intimate with them. Another item I took into consideration was world development. In the first novel, Id revealed a fraction of Sunil a teaser of the differences between that enchanted world and ours. Where a story is concerned, nobody likes to read about the same people in the same place for too long, so I needed to unfurl a little bit more of the map. This meant introducing new creatures, new cultures and new scenery that could complement what already existed but still be intriguing in their own right. It also meant re-reading portions of the previous book where I had briefly mentioned a foreign place but might have forgotten how I described it. For example, in my first draft of Curse of Arastold, I reference the hylark flower as having yellow pollen. In the previous story, the pollen had been green. Would most people have even noticed? Probably not, but for the few that would, I didnt want to create any disparity that might destroy their vision of this fantasy world. Finally, as the story grows, so must its characters on their own and in their relationships with others. I couldnt write Ainsley and Megan as the same teenagers from the previous book because in the story, as in real life, their experiences had changed them and brought them a bit of wisdom. Their interaction with one another in the second book differs profoundly from the continued on page 76
After battling to save Arylon from destruction, Megan and Ainsley are more than ready to journey back to Earth. But their trip is postponed when Ainsley is stricken with a serious disease, one that slowly transforms its victims into horrible monsters! His friends take him to see Lady Maudred in Raklund, as she has experience with the magical disease. But her potion fails to cure him and time is running out for Ainsley. As he slowly descends into madness, his body is undergoing a hideous metamorphosis. The only hope for a cure lies with Arastold, an ancient and powerful dragon, who is imprisoned in a mountain cave. For it was Arastold who originated the foul infection. Can Megan convince Arastold to lift the treacherous curse that is transforming Ainsley into a deadly dragon? And will they ever find their way home to Earth? Find out what happens when you read Curse of Arastold.

When the dreams start to spill over into Staceys waking life, thats when the nightmare really begins.

t that moment I knew the truth: Amber wasnt Amber anymore. Shed changed into a USO.
Horrors! I hopped some rocks, heading toward camp. There was only one thing I could do: tell Mom and Dad. I had to convince them that the banana ship had been real and this Amber was not real. My parents were smart theyd know what to do. But would they believe me? Not in a zillion years. I stopped under a pine tree. Dry pine needles crunched under my feet as I sank wearily to the ground. Mom and Dad already complained that my imagination was out of control. Even loony Lucas thought Id dreamed the banana spaceship. And I wasnt even sure what to believe. The fake Amber had fooled everyone well, almost everyone. Two of us were in on her deceitful alien game. Me and Dribble. How could an almost-sixth grader and a duck battle alien forces?
Excerpt is from Oh No! UFO!
If Amber had really been zapped into an alien, how could I rescue her? Where was the real Amber? Was she asleep in her own body while an alien masqueraded as her? Or was she being held captive in a spaceship suffering horrible tortures? I imagined Amber trapped in a large glass test tube and ogled by creatures with eyes for ears and lips for eyebrows. Their creepy twenty-fingered hands would touch Ambers white-blonde hair. They would wonder if all Earthlings had pale hair and violetblue eyes. I sure hoped those aliens werent into sharp needles or dissection.

became interested in astrology about 35 years ago when a coworker began taking a class. She loved the astrology, but hated the calculations! I said I would help her I didnt so much mind the calculations, as they use some very basic math. It only took a couple of weeks for me to fall in love with astrology as a model of the universe, of life and of my psyche! I quickly graduated into a love for the forecasting capabilities of this ancient science. The ability to see into the future has always seemed like a natural outgrowth of intelligence. When the first personal computer came along, I had to have one. It had a tape drive and you had to load your programs every time you wanted to do anything. Still, with astrology it was a lot faster than calculating charts by hand, and was presumably accurate, if you put in the right information. I went through a series of computers rather quickly, wanting to update as soon as a faster, better system came on the market. I was happy to see that there were astrologers who could do the programming, as that was not so interesting to me. Today I use my state-of-the-art astrology program almost daily. The breadth of applications it offers is huge. I sometimes wonder how I ever got along without a computer! I certainly couldnt do actual maps (astro-cartog-
raphy), midpoints (cosmobiology) and a wealth of other calculations for each client I dont have that kind of time. With a program, I can do it all in a matter of moments. So why am I telling you, dear reader, about astrology programs? Llewellyn has developed a series of nine books with CD-ROM programs for astrology. These books are designed for beginners, but they are useful to anyone who wants some astrological information and doesnt want to actually consult an astrologer. You can print out very accurate birth charts and interpretive reports based on the contents of the book. Then you can go back to the book to give the printed report even more detail. I recently heard from a reader who purchased Mapping Your Romantic Relationships and Mapping Your Sex Life. Its not too hard to figure out what was on her mind, though she was savvy enough to realize that there are at least two separate matters to consider where committed relationships are concerned. With these two books, she felt confident that she could discern some of the major issues and themes in her relationships, and she could focus on the fundamental human factors that contribute to her personal sexual satisfaction. She is miles ahead of the person who just hopes for the best whenever he or she goes on a date, gets serious and even marries.
Mapping Your Romantic Relationships lets you compare your own chart to anyone elses chart, giving you a look at how the two of you will interact. Mapping Your Sex Life is about your own chart, and about the issues you face concerning sexuality. Of course, you can do a chart for your lover too
Other Astrological Destinations Where else can you go with Llewellyns Astrology Made Easy Series? Pretty much wherever you want! Mapping Your Travels & Relocation offers you the ability to input your birth information, and then fantasize about what it would be like to live anywhere on the planet. The program prompts you to change the location, and then it recalculates the chart and creates a new interpretation for you. You can get a sense of what it would be like to visit or live in any major city around the world. Mapping Your Birthchart and Mapping Your Future give you two of the fundamental pieces of the astrological

puzzle. The titles pretty much tell you what these two are about. Mapping Your Birthchart gives you ten times the information you get from your Sun sign alone, and Mapping Your Future tracks the movement of the planets as they relate to your birth chart, forecasting events and conditions for virtually every day of your life. Family relationships, money and health are three topics we all wonder about from time to time. Three books in the series relate to each of these topics,
delivering charts and interpretations that address critical issues of living in the 21st century.

strological birth charts have long been likened to everything from a blueprint for living to a celestial compass. With such promising allusions its no wonder that countless seekers turn to astrology for guidance and insight. During the last 15 years of teaching astrology I have observed that nearly every student is driven by her desire to understand not just the meaning of life, but the meaning of her own life. The questions are universal; Why am I here? Where am I headed? How can I overcome my challenges and make the most of my talents? Mapping Your Souls Purpose grew out of my own observation that countless individuals who could benefit from astrologys cosmic clues were turning away in frustration, simply because the system of astrology is not exactly userfriendly. After all, when you are standing at one of lifes important crossroads do you really want to stop and master a new language just to figure out which direction to go? Why should you be required to delve into the intricacies of interpretation just to understand your own personal game plan when our modern world lets you operate a microwave and read your email without a degree in computer programming? Life is a journey and this book helps you hone in on your souls intentions without a lot of fuss or frustration. It provides plenty of information to help you sidestep the speed traps and enjoy the sights along the way. For starters, the first section lays out Rules for the Road, and identifies what, exactly, you are here to learn and teach to others. If you approach this information with an open heart and mind, youll gain instant insight into the patterns of your relationships and how to get back on course.
The Traveling Companions section of the book explores the importance of the Sun and Moon and how this dynamic duo lights the path ahead of you. Here youll come to grips with the fact that your friends and lovers either support or undermine your spiritual evolution. Once you find the balance between the Suns energy and the Moons gentle illumination, you can take steps to create the life you crave. Whats more, it quickly pinpoints major layovers from past lives that could be creating all sorts of delays and dilemmas, in and out of relationships. Ive assembled the most effective tools to identify and clarify your personal programming so that by the time you reach the third section of the book, several life themes will emerge. Maybe your souls purpose is to be authentic in relationships. Perhaps you are here to have faith in your intuition. Or maybe you really are supposed to write the great American novel. Of course, conflicting information is bound to pop up, but youll still be able to grasp the big picture. Every voyage has smooth sailing and your life path is no different. The Ticket to Paradise chapters outline your prime potentials and blessings from on high. This section helps you identify and make the most out of your birthright, including Jupiter and the Part of Fortune. Here youll discover the options and opportunities that are laid out before you and where you need to be cautious of overstepping your bounds. After flying high through the pages of part three youll get grounded, at least temporarily, by the sobering realities contained in the chapters outlining how to Get Derailed. Saturns serious lessons must be acknowledged and integrated before you can truly move on. Part four contains the simple truth
about how to take responsibility, overcome obstacles and stand tall during difficult times. However, this section is not limited to searching for the light at the end of the tunnel and actually outlines how, when you make peace with Saturn, you can move forward with confidence and wisdom. The book concludes with your Final Destination, and how the vulnerabilities of the Vertex help you understand what your soul is actively evolving towards. It is in this final section that you will begin to recognize your own souls purpose, especially if you take advantage of the helpful worksheets contained at the end of each section. The book also contains a CD-ROM, which calculates your personal chart and offers a detailed five-page report based on your individual chart. Mapping Your Souls Purpose offers an invitation for anyone with no previous astrological knowledge whatsoever to peer into the cosmos and glimpse their spiritual path. But even if you already know a thing or two about astrology, youre bound to gain insight and inspiration from this passport to cosmic understanding.

In the House
Gwyneth Bryan
o borrow a line from a certain much-aired credit card commercial (whats in your wallet?), I pose the question, whats in your house? Or, rather, your
houses? Im talking about the 12 houses that comprise a persons astrological natal chart. Astrologers, of course, are familiar with the houses and how they resonate with the individual, but the average person, who might know their Sun and maybe their Moon sign, is often unaware of how much of a role the houses play in shaping your lifes blueprint. Thats why, when the opportunity came to put together a book on an intermediate to advanced topic in astrology, I suggested a contemporary look at house-based astrology, simply titled Houses. Houses are the 12 sections of the chart that resonate with some important aspects of life love and family, material possessions, friendship, work, spirituality, sex, death and even karma. All around the wheel of the chart we find pieces of the personality puzzle that, I believe, have as much weight as the planets and their signs. Through reading and studying and looking at dozens of charts the importance of the houses in shaping ones personality became clearly evident to me. I became better able to scan charts and get clues about certain traits and talents right away. A woman writer and bookseller I know turned out to have a number of planets in the Third House. Of course, books, writing and communications would be her passion. A friend who seems to have the luck of the Irish, a cheerful nature and a magical way with children has several planets in the Fifth House, including Jupiter. My husband, who both worships and grumbles about his work, has four planets in the Sixth House, the place of work, health and mundane tasks. In fact, its the mundane tasks at the workplace he grumbles about the most. But you wont find a person with a stronger work ethic. I was also fascinated to look at the charts of celebrities and current political leaders. I was writing for a time during the 2004 presidential election, and studying the charts of John Kerry and George W. Bush was illuminating. Saturn in the First House, the house of first impressions, casts Kerry with a serious nature and a certain discomfort in his skin, an awkwardness that is subtle, but came across through the scrutiny of the television cameras. Remember the time after one of the debates that he loped over to Bush and looked like he was going to tackle him? By contrast, Bush has more beneficent planets in the First House and a good many folks are taken with his good ol boy
36
swagger. But he has several planets in the Twelfth House, too, so theres a certain mystery and a lot of secrets surrounding his political career, and indeed his life story. And then theres Bill Clinton with Jupiter and Venus in the First House. Pow! He has the charisma of a rock star. Thats why Ive given the book the subtitle A Contemporary Guide, because Ive woven current events and news-worthy people into the pages, in contrast to some of the older books on houses that focus more on historical figures. The language and sensibility is more in step with the present too. For quite some time, Id been frustrated to find antiquated material in older books. Because some of the tomes were printed before mainstream psychology was accepted, as well as the New Age and self-help movements, I also wanted to create something that would draw upon these sources to help elucidate the deeper psychological material in an understandable (and applicable) way. With Houses, I use humor, metaphor and symbolic, archetypal analysis in contrast to some of the very literal interpretations of older, more staid astrologers. For example, how many times do people with packed Twelfth Houses have to be warned about secret enemies? The more you worry about hidden foes the more you draw them to you. There are other, more symbolic and positive ways to interpret planetary placements in the Twelfth House. The same is true with the placement of Saturn in the Fifth House. It used to be that this was a warning for women that children would be denied or delayed, no questions asked. In my book, I take a softer view that diverges from this thinking. The bottom line is, you should never look at a chart especially your own and feel destined to unhappiness. Yes, I believe we are put here on Earth to learn lessons and awareness, but also to be happy. Understanding the metaphors, symbolism and archetypes in our charts our own personal mythology is a way to understand and forgive ourselves, as well as our loved ones and enemies (secret and not-so-secret). When we can get past our hang-ups, we can work toward cultivating higher consciousness, which not only benefits ourselves but humankind and the planet.

ne of the great difficulties of counseling is determining the actual cause or causes that affect a person. Often the initial impetus is not the true cause, but merely a manifestation of the real problem. Many hours of counseling may be spent trying to discover the root problem. An analysis of the natal horoscope and other astrological charts can help a trained astrologer pinpoint the source of problems quickly and effectively. Many astrologers, as a result of their training and life experience, are able to provide therapeutic insight based on individual chart indicators that can help a person through his or her problems. The famous psychologist Carl Jung used astrology throughout his career. He understood that astrology can be used to shed light on a persons character, thereby aiding the counseling process. As more research is done examining the scientific structure of astrology, some psychologists have adopted this tool as a means to obtain information they might otherwise need weeks or months to uncover. The result can be faster, deeper and more effective counseling.
Dr. Mitchell E. Gibson, M.D., is a highly respected psychiatrist in Arizona. Based on the authors study of more than 400 birth charts and the use of statistical research models, Signs of Mental Illness reveals astrological techniques for predicting mental illness. For example, he discovered that the average persons birth chart contains about three marker aspects of depression. However, the birth chart of someone with major depression contains an average of ten such markers. All of the patient examples covered in the text were diagnosed according to the DSM-IV, the standard of psychiatric diagnostic criteria. The diagnostic groups represented include major depression, anxiety, addictive disorder, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A coupon for a free birth chart is included with the book.

Whats a Mantrascope?
To reveal your mantra, read through your horoscope and look for the bold words. Read them in order to gain insightful wisdom that will help you achieve clarity in the coming months.
n ricor Misunderstandings are possible. Sharpen your listening skills and make sure you are clear about what others are
saying be receptive. Business opportunities arise at social gatherings, but you dont always have to work the room. Go out and have some fun. Do atypical things. Reprioritize the things you want to accomplish and test new skills to broaden your mind. Go to a new international restaurant, or hike in the country instead of visiting the fitness center. Responding to your bodys needs will require only mild and preventive remedies.
Your goals are nearly fulfilled; now the rewards of your efforts can accrue. Get your financial house in order: pay your bills, balance your accounts and follow up on lost payments. Start over with situations involving partnerships. Sit down with your partner to negotiate where things are headed individually and together in both the short and long term. Pursue new sources of revenue. The rhythm of your routine could be preventive, so incorporate things such as acupuncture, massage therapy or even an aromatherapy bath. Relationship issues will move onto the back burner, and youll feel lighter at heart. Despite issues at home coming to the forefront again, youll feel blessed by good fortune. Youll feel the wind at your back, so make the most of this time of high energy, optimism and focus. Youre reforming your character and presentation. Tweaking your plans will lay the groundwork for a big leap forward. Maintain a regular practice of centering exercises and meditations. Meet all situations with peace and inner balance to keep the magic with you. Plan a leaner, meaner workload so that you are working smarter, not harder. You feel like playing, and so you should: sports, dates, even a vacation! Early August nurtures your creativity and draws your focus to ways in which you can make your life happier and more meaningful. Get in touch with submerged factors in your own character. Communication snafus come out of nowhere, and lots of social activities put pressure on your finances just something to plan for since these are part of a long-term development process. Likewise, gambling, including speculation in the markets, is not likely to go well.

Your home and family life is a beehive of activity. Though your neighborhood or siblings may inconvenience you, let activities at home take you away from work. Get your house in order, both metaphorically and literally. Make room for more activities, even if its working in the garden or hiking in the hills; taking a friend or two will only increase the pleasure. Set your intention carefully, because youre on the cusp of new possibilities. Adjust your career reality by delegating more to others or providing constructive input in a workload-adjustment process. Encountering an obstacle doesnt mean you need to alter course. But if you do need to change, this is a good time to do so. Youre dealing with stress in every important area of your life. Wait before you respond to events and youll be less likely to over-dramatize the situation to yourself. Only attempt to do one thing at a time. Be aware of how you feel about whats happening at work and be clear about your priorities. Get busy on a goal that will take you in a new direction your charm is high. Your ability to communicate may be a bit off a sign of your inner uncertainty. Chances are, you want to go to someplace completely new, and this is good. Finances are steady, as Jupiter assists you with innovative insights into your activities, but adjust your budget and pay off debts. Incorporate creativity, as input from others sparks new ideas. You are capable of coming up with truly unique innovations now, ones that will bring value to you and others. Plan some downtime into your schedule time away from other people, which includes staying away from the phone or email. Locate the place of peace in yourself and celebrate life: throw a party or just raise a glass with those you love. You will count this as the most active period of the year for you. Set your resolve and articulate your goals but balance fulfilling your plans against meeting your obligations. And do something fun and make sure your weekends are time away. This is a good retreat time when you can replenish your energy supplies. Dont let your need to do what your friends are doing goad you into spending what you really cant afford.

Outreach efforts are fruitful now, but work becomes more difficult. Clean up the paperwork in order to focus on your main objective: turn the page and start a new chapter of your life. Disorganization results in communication problems. Take a vacation, or at least a few days off. This is your time to draw back, whether to complete some home projects, take a spiritual retreat or visit faraway lands. Think about how you can work within groups to further your own plans, as well as to serve them in return. Youve made many sacrifices for others, and now its time to bring some balance back. Youve been trying to squeeze more out of your budget, and the squeezing is almost over your work efforts result in extra rewards. Youll experience a change in direction of your fortunes. Expect the unexpected with your attitude more relaxed. Fuel the fires of happiness; socializing is a good way to relax. Your relationships move ahead this month, and your love life also opens up. few years ago, I took part in the opening day of a relocating bookstore. As part of the day, several people were giving brief talks. Speaking just before me was Ed Fitch, and when he was finished, after some nice applause, people started talking amongst themselves. Now, before I continue, do you know Ed Fitch? I mean, do you know more about him than that hes published a couple of books? If not, read on. By the time I came up to give my talk, I had completely changed what I intended to say. Instead, I found myself talking about the masters among us. This column is based on what I said that day. Theres hardly a day that goes by when I dont hear from someone who says, I wish Id had a chance to talk with (someone), where the someone is historically famous. It might be Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie, MacGregor Mathers, Alex Sanders, Gerald Gardner, A.E. Waite, Evangeline Adams, Dion Fortune, Scott Cunningham or one of many others. To these people I say, Pay attention to the masters among us! Lets start with Ed Fitch. Although many people are known for helping trigger the modern interest in Witchcraft and Paganism, nobody is more important than Ed. In the earliest days of the movement, Ed was responsible for manuscripts that trained people in the Pagan way. Those papers trained people, who trained others, who have become the leaders of todays movement. In the days before the Internet, he published a newsletter (that eventually became a magazine) called The Crystal Well. Thousands of people have practiced or modified those rituals and taught them to others. You can get the best of the writings from that journal in Magical Rites from the Crystal Well. Its

filled with practical information and rites you can use, but also serves well as living history. And when it comes to importance in the development of the Craft, another living master is Raymond Buckland. He trained with Gerald Gardner and introduced Gardnerian Wicca to the U.S. If you want to know the history of modern Wicca, Raymond is the person you should go to. His living history of the Craft is revealed in his book Witchcraft from the Inside. And when it comes to a non-sectarian training manual for learning to be a Witch, nothing is better than Bucklands Complete Book of Witchcraft. When it comes to the Tarot, masters such as Eden Gray, A.E. Waite and Paul Foster Case are no longer with us. But we are lucky to have two people with us today who are widely acknowledged as masters of the Tarot and extend our knowledge of the cards. One is Rachel Pollack, author of such books as Seeker, The Forest of Souls and The Kabbalah Tree. The other is Mary K. Greer, who wrote The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals and Understanding the Tarot Court. When it comes to The Golden Dawn, two modern masters are Chic and Sandra Tabatha Cicero. They were friends of Israel Regardie, and their notes and additions to Regardies classic books, The Tree of Life and The Middle Pillar, are important contributions to that system. The Essential Golden Dawn and Self-Initiation Into the Golden Dawn Tradition have helped develop untold thousands of magicians. Noel Tyl is one of the foremost astrologers in the world today. His books are not only brilliant explanations of astrological subjects, but books such as Solar Arcs, Synthesis & Counseling in Astrology and Vocations have expanded on previous astrological theory. I am proud to say that in my book
Modern Sex Magick, there is an article by Lola Babalon. She was responsible for introducing chaos magick to the U.S. This is not meant to slight any other authors or teachers. The people I named above are simply a few of the many I would contend are masters in their respective areas of expertise. Perhaps, as you read this, you are thinking of other people who are masters. In fact, in another month or year, perhaps new masters will arrive, to explain things in better ways and expand upon our current levels of information. No, you cant talk with Crowley, Cunningham, Regardie, Adams or any of a wide range of masters of the past. But you can read the books of the many masters living today. Many teach classes and workshops you can attend. You can also write to any Llewellyn author by sending your letters in care of Llewellyn. Although we cant guarantee that theyll respond, be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for a reply. Years from now, you may be wishing you could have talked with one of the masters who is alive right now. Dont pass on your opportunities.
Betty Friedan and Growing Up Tribes and Craft On February 4, 2006, Betty Friedan died. Many of you reading this might be asking, Betty who? because she was definitely old school. But Friedan wrote a book back in 1963 that literally changed my life. It was probably responsible for changing your life, too, even though you might not know it. The book was The Feminine Mystique. It pointed out that discrimination against women was both cultural and legal. At that time, just 40 years ago, the cultural conception of the inferiority of women was common. The ideas of equal pay for equal work, equal opportunity in

the workforce and the right of pregnant women to keep their jobs were unheard of. It was this single book that triggered the modern feminist movement and has helped inch civilization toward a more egalitarian culture. But thats not what I wanted to talk about. I was in elementary school when I read that book. It literally forced me to reevaluate the entire way I had related to girls. The book, however, was not simply a political diatribe. Rather, the thing that really caught my attention was its presentation that something was very wrong, and as a result of this something, women were unhappy. By this time, my father had been dead for half of my short life, and I idealized my mother. I talked to her about the book (which she had already read), and I realized that she didnt understand it. Women dont need to control their own money, she said. They
just take the money that husbands give them and use it. She also said, I dont understand why Friedan claims women are dissatisfied. I dont have time to be unhappy. Theres always another wall to wash or load of laundry to do. Of course, I have a great deal of respect for my mother. She was one of the smartest people I have ever known. But even at my young age I realized that her experience prevented her from understanding what Freidan was writing. It was literally at that moment that I realized how different I was from her. I was growing up. One thing I have learned is that humans are social animals. They need to have groups. That group can be family, school, religion, etc., what is sociologically called a tribe. As I matured, I found that the tribe with my mother, while important, was no longer the most vital tribe for my personal growth.
Most people simply find themselves in a tribe, but some people choose their tribe. Have you chosen yours? A growing number of people have found their tribe within the Craft community. If youre thinking of becoming part of this tribe, there are a couple of books Id like to recommend to you. First, there is The Witchs Coven by Edain McCoy. This explains what the basic tribal aspect of Witchcraft, the coven, is all about. You might add to this her Spellworking for Covens, which has rituals and techniques for use in a coven. Another book on this subject that is even more expansive is Amber Ks Coven Craft. If you want to be part of a ceremonial magick tribe, beside the books by the Ciceros you might also look at Inside a Magical Lodge and Circles of Power by John Michael Greer.
Wicca is for today. There is a growing realization in high tech areas, such as computer hardware and software, that many of the wild cards the brilliant young movers and shakers in the industry are techno-Pagans who have their feet in a tradition older than the human race but with their heads and hands in the present and the future. The U.S. space program was perhaps one of the first professional areas where Witches and Pagans started to find their niches. They have spread from there. And where is the Craft of the Wise going in the future? It is likely that Wicca will, before too many years, become widespread enough that its adherents will be in enough positions to affect not just the arts and sciences but the courses of governments and multinational corporations as well. The result would be a calming effect of increased tolerance and understanding over human affairs, and an ever-increasing effect of honoring the Earth as more and more effective public policy. The existing religious structures, which until now have only made occasional grumbles about the return of an antagonist which outclasses them in every way, will have to be persuaded or compelled to accept that freedom of religion is here to stay. But by that time enough Wiccans and Pagans should have gravitated to suitably high positions in industry and politics to assure that this does indeed happen.

n 1976, Dr. Jonn Mumford (Swami Anandakapila Saraswati) delivered a series of very important and influential lectures at Gnosticon 5, an extended conference sponsored by Llewellyn Publications that brought together experts from a variety of occult backgrounds and disciplines. A taped set of these lectures was available from Llewellyn for a number of years. Today, copies are virtually impossible to find, and Dr. Mumford was content to let the information languish because he had doubts about whether some of the more explicit material should ever appear in print. In 2004, my wife and teaching partner Patricia Johnson (Devi Veenanand) suggested that we approach Dr. Mumford about the possibility of writing a book
based on his Gnosticon lectures. She felt the material was too valuable to be allowed to lapse into obscurity and that it was important to ensure that his contribution to the development of contemporary Tantra receives the recognition it deserves. Much to our surprise, he agreed to support us in this undertaking. Dr. Mumford has a rare gift for placing authentic Hindu Tantra, including its sexual aspects, within a conceptual framework that makes it accessible for Westerners. He manages to do this without overemphasizing sexuality, watering down the teachings or using clich New Age techniques, however appealing such modifications might be to Western seekers. We became his students because we were seeking something deeper and
more authentic than what popular American Tantra had to offer, and that is exactly what we found. The lectures on which this book is based were perhaps the first public discussion of sexual Tantra delivered to an American audience by a Western teacher with authentic Indian training in a lineage-based system. Some of the material that Dr. Mumford presented at Gnosticon was almost entirely unknown outside of India at the time, and his teachings have inspired succeeding generations of Tantra teachers, whether they realize it or not. The Gnosticon lectures are of great historical importance in the development of Tantra in the West, and they helped shape what is known today as

I wrapped my arms around his ankles and begged for my life. He tried to pull away, and then kicked me in the face with his sandal when I would not release him. Leaning down, he grasped the ivory hilt of his dagger and pulled the blade half out of its sheath. His meaning was clear. If I followed the caravan, I would be killed and the vultures would get their feast. I sat naked upon the road, my arms and legs spread loosely, salt blood dripping from my cut lip where I had been kicked Then I was alone. The tale of Alhazred, the rst ctional life account of the famed author of the Necronomicon, starts in tragedy and progresses into darkness. Tortured and left to die, Alhazred welcomes beings with sinister powers just to stay alive. From deaths grip, he nds new life in black necromancy. Despite a veritable attachment to humanity, he becomes loyal to the evil godform Nylarhotep, practices cannibalism and joins a clan of ghouls in a quest for knowledge and power across the Arab desert expanse known as the Empty Space. Alhazred undertakes a macabre struggle to regain what he lost in his youth an impossible task that can only end in horric destruction. Swear allegiance to me, and all other gates will swing wide. He lifted his arm, all except the ngers of his hand concealed within his long sleeve, and I shrank away in fear, but some power compelled me to walk toward his throne on stiffened knees His ngernails were black and elongated, like the talons of a hawk. Using the tip of his rst nger, he scratched the skin of my forehead so that my blood ran down on either side of the hole that had been my nose.

Neo-Tantra a term coined in the early 20th century but used by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) to describe his approach, and now applied more generally to Westernized systems of practice that emphasize sexuality. While some traditionalists take a dim view of Neo-Tantra, it can, at its best, lead practitioners to approach sexuality with deeper awareness and a greater sense of reverence. The information that Dr. Mumford shared in 1976, in the aftermath of the sexual revolution, is perhaps even more valuable today than it was then, given the current climate of sexual repression in the United States. Beyond any historical value or cultural and political significance, the content of the lectures is profound and the techniques are extraordinary. Although Dr. Mumford was reluctant to authorize the re-release of this information and its adaptation into book form, we felt it was important to undertake this project. Over the years, his important work has been misrepre-
sented, misunderstood and appropriated without acknowledgement; we wanted to set the record straight and honor him as one of the most important figures in modern Tantra. We are deeply grateful that he encouraged us to use his material and allowed us the freedom to take liberties with it. We are also grateful for his willingness to provide additional information and elaboration whenever it was needed. Working on this book afforded us an opportunity to absorb the teachings very deeply, and serious readers will have a similar experience, if they study the material carefully. Those who are familiar with NeoTantra may be surprised to discover that certain practices emphasized by many contemporary schools receive little or no attention in our book. In 1976, Dr. Mumford was largely unconcerned with male multiple orgasm or female ejaculation, and these topics are only mentioned in passing. Both female ejaculation and male multiple orgasms are wonderful experiences and enjoyable
but not essential parts of the sexual repertoire; however, they are not a core concern in traditional Tantric sexuality, nor does developing the capacity to experience them make one a Tantrika. From the classical perspective, the GSpot is a trigger point for Swadisthana Chakra, nothing more. It is certainly not the key to sexual healing, nor is it anything new. It is discussed both in Indian erotic literature such as the Koka Shastra and in the erotic novels of 18th Century Europe. While we have taken some liberties with the original tapes and have included our own perspective at times, we all feel that we are conveying the essential teachings Dr. Mumford presented in 1976. The content remains as relevant today as it was 30 years ago; the techniques are powerful, pleasurable and effective. Practicing them should yield interesting results and bring you much delight.

In Quest Of Alhazred
Donald Tyson
bdul Alhazred is attributed as the mysterious author of the Necronomicon. Like the dark book he is reputed to have written, he was the creation of the fertile mind of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), who invented both Alhazred and the Necronomicon as background details for his terrifying stories of cosmic horror. Lovecraft wrote that Alhazred was a mad poet of Yemen who in his youth explored the great Arabian desert known as the Empty Space. He traveled widely across the ancient world in search of arcane wisdom, and in his old age wrote a book documenting what he had gleaned in secret places beneath the earth of strange necromancies, lost cities and god-like races of extraterrestrials so alien they were not even composed of flesh. Alhazred worshipped these gods, and in the year 738, while living out his old age in Damascus, he paid the ultimate price for his hubris. He was caught up into the air in the city marketplace in full view of the throng and devoured piece by piece by an invisible monster. Alhazred plays no active role in Lovecrafts stories, but is merely said to be the author of the Necronomicon, which is the focus of the readers attention. When I put together Necronomicon (Llewellyn, 2004), I felt Alhazreds presence constantly at my shoulder, filling my mind with his wanderings and his curious adventures. He does not appear in my version of Necronomicon, save for a brief mention at the very end of the book, but his unseen presence haunts each page. The Necronomicon was based on the knowledge he acquired while wandering the Empty Space and traveling through Egypt, Persia and other lands. It was written in his old age, as he gazed back over the years into his past. When I finished Necronomicon, I knew there was another story to tell
44
the story of Alhazred in his youth, the wonders and terrors he experienced while roaming distant lands acquiring forbidden wisdom, the passion that drove him to venture into the dark caverns at the roots of the world and confront the abominations of nature that dwell there, the circumstances of his life that resulted in his madness on the burning sands of the Empty Space. Whereas the Necronomicon is a gathering of wisdom by the poet in his old age, stripped of human emotion and personal details, the novel Alhazred presents the actual life of the young poet as it is being lived. Because of youthful indiscretions with the kings daughter, Alhazred, who had been court poet of Yemen and a favorite of the king, was exiled into the Empty Space. Before his expulsion into the desert, he was punished in ways too horrifying to mention in this essay, ways that robbed him of his love, his humanity, even his very reason. His wanderings detail his efforts to recover what had been so cruelly stripped away from him, and to transform himself from a naked and penniless vagabond into a necromancer. As he travels through lost cities and occult portals unknown to those who walk upright, he learns of the early history of this planet, of the races from the stars who were its masters long before the evolution of mankind, of their terrible wars and the consequences of their inevitable return. Alhazred does not wander in solitude but moves through the rich world of the Middle East at the close of the Seventh Century, not many decades after the armies of Mohammed swept through Arabia, Syria, Egypt, Persia and other lands to create the Muslim Empire. He is outwardly a member of the Muslim ruling class, but in his tortured soul he gives no allegiance to the
teachings of Mohammed. Alhazreds gods are the Great Old Ones who came in eons past from beyond the stars, and who continue to maintain a foothold in our world, biding their time until the heavens realign themselves and cease to cast down rays poisonous to their kind. Against his will, Alhazred is forced to become a spy for the Old One known as Nyarlathotep, who seeks to use him to probe the plots of his enemies. In the Seventh Century, many nameless cults still flourished alongside Christianity and Islam. Much of the world remained unexplored and unknown. Strange worshippers of alien gods conducted dark rituals beneath the moon, and gave sacrifices of human blood. Yet in addition to those who remained loyal to the Old Ones, there were sworn foes that fought them with potent arts. Alhazred meets these and other wonders in his wanderings, but perhaps the greatest of them all is love. In spite of the horrors committed against him and his madness, which together transform him into something other than human, he is not without companionship and affection, though they take forms that would earn him a sentence of death were they to become known, for his lover is even less human than Alhazred.

Hoodoo originated as a highly developed spiritual system incorporating herbal wisdom, known by most people in the area of Africa known as the Guinea Coast. It especially concerned the development of a connection with the Spirits (known as Vodou) using carved representations of them and the human soul. When people with this knowledge were brought by force to the Caribbean and U.S., they blended their systems with those of Native Americans and Latinos. The term Hoodoo was used mockingly as one of several pejorative labels created by whites to refer to the ancestral spiritual and ethnobotanical magical systems. Sometimes having a decidedly Christian veneer, the term Hoodoo is most often used today to refer to magico-spiritual systems with an African background that feature the use of magic, healing and hexing using herbs, roots, bones, etc.

Ecology-Based Shamanism
In Ecoshamanism, James Endredy gives an explicit description of the ecological problems we are facing due to our own greed and foolishness. But instead of merely complaining, he offers more than 50 practices we can each do to make changes in our lives that will help to save us all. These practices are part of ecoshamanism. Ecoshamanism is the natural evolution of traditional and neo-shamanism in the West. The practices range from simple things such as being aware of what you are buying and its impact on the earth to rituals such as making and working in your own ecoshamanic temple. Along the way youll learn ceremonies, rituals, dances and chanting practices. As you work with an increasing number of the practices youll discover that living with increasing spirituality in harmony with the earth comes naturally.
Celtic Shamanism
By Oak, Ash, & Thorn combines ancient shamanism, the spiritual system of the Celts and modern forms of shamanism into a practical spiritual tradition. First, youll learn about ancient and modern forms of shamanism including traveling in the three shamanic worlds and how to communicate and deal with the entities youll meet there. The worlds are specifically Celtic in nature. The 50 entities you meet are defined as members of the Faery Folk and their kin, from the Bean Sidhe (banshee) to the Will o the Wisp (a faery who appears at night in lonely places carrying a lantern to confuse travelers). Other topics include shamanic healing, soul retrieval, shapeshifting, invisibility, divination with stones, the omen stick and the Ogam alphabet, pathworking through the three shamanic worlds, herbalism and different forms of Celtic magic.

Popular Qabalah
Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Guy Ritchie, Sandra Bernhard, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Rob Lowe, Winona Ryder, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Newman, Jeff Goldblum, Barbra Streisand and Dan Akroyd. All these people have all been associated with Qabalah, though Madonna is its most well-known proponent. It would seem like Qabalah (or Kabalah or Cabala or any of several other spellings) is the latest fad of the stars. Regardless of Hollywoods devotion, Qabalistic tenets are true and deep. And the more important question surrounding this subject is how the popular interest in Qabalah is going to affect the average person. Fans of these celebrities will certainly be drawn to investigating the subject, which means the number of people interested in the subject will grow. Ultimately, this will mean more people will be researching, teaching and writing about it. The end result will be a widespread, penetrating look into the multifaceted esoteric layers within Qabalistic teachings. The popularization of this spiritual system indicates a change in civilized consciousness. Directing your subconscious towards materialization in the physical world, this shift offers the potential towards human development. Personal responsibility can undermine ignorant dogmatic followers by spurring global enlightenment on both personal and collective spiritual systems. Dont let this message be lost.
alking to my apartment after work one day, I saw an older man in front of me on the sidewalk acting a bit like a tourist, stopping to look at the old homes and apartment buildings, many from the turn of the century. We said hello and he added, What a beautiful neighborhood. Since he seemed to be wandering (and chatty), I suggested he walk to a nearby stretch of inspiring Victorian homes. He thanked me and said, I like these walks. They make me feel better. Then he said, I just lost my wife. This fascinating glimpse into his sad situation resonated with me on many levels his decision to walk through an attractive neighborhood to boost his spirit speaks to the inherent value of architecture and history; the importance of maintaining lively, walkable neighborhoods in the city and beyond; and the psychological impact of the built environment that architects, designers and city planners need to keep in mind as they create the surroundings where we spend our time. Since then Ive also thought a lot about how walking always seems to calm my mind. But is it the repetitious motion of walking that has this meditative effect, or is it something

flaneur.org, a webzine dedicated to the sanctification of the stroll, a flneur is described as one of those fin-desicle dandies who ambled through the crowds of European cities in search of bustle, gossip and beauty. The Flneur by Edmund White describes it best: A flneur is a stroller, a loiterer, someone who ambles through a city without apparent purpose but is secretly attuned to the history of the place in search of adventure. The flneur visits bookshops and boutiques, monuments and palaces, providing gossip and background to each site, looking through the blank walls past the proud edifices to glimpse the inner human drama. While we dont always have monuments and palaces gracing our American neighborhoods, adopting the outgoing mindset of a flneur will quicken your pace and turn down your mental chatter leading to a healthy feeling of integrating your mind and body with your place. Whether you are walking in a city or on a quiet residential street, consider the following:
Walk wherever your whims take you Dont confine yourself to paths and sidewalks Seek out hills, stairs and uneven terrain Window shop Read historic markers Take pictures Enjoy architecture Greet people Read about the history of the place before you walk there
Wonder the best thoughts come while walking Listen to lively music Find your favorite house (again)
Find Your Roots Another way to walk mindfully is to make an effort to understand the ecological landscape in which you live. We identify so strongly with the built environment that it is easy to forget about the land that existed long before any of us were here. Rediscovering your natural environment can renew your sense of identity as you walk and make you feel connected to the place where you live. In Ecoshamanism, James Endredy reminds us that we have conquered and trivialized the earth, leading to a profound disconnect from the natural world that sustains us. Claiming this preposterous situation is one of the underlying causes of the ecological crises of our times, he goes on to say: The key to reclaiming an organic, primal sense of place is to experience the soil, landscape and ecosystems of the places where we live and work at a level of reality much deeper than that imposed on us by political boundaries, zip codes and school districts. To help us achieve this deep level of identification, Endredy encourages us to make the distinction between cognitive maps and organic maps. While both of these maps are products of our own experience with a place, cognitive maps are based on our understanding of the manmade environment and organic maps
Window shopping is a great way to experience mindful walking
are based on a deeper appreciation of the natural landscape. After reading Ecoshamanism, Ive shifted my own map to include more organic thinking. St. Paul has the longest stretch of river bluff of any community along the Mississippi River, and my neighborhood is perched on the bluffs, a couple miles away from where the river takes a steep turn to the southwest. When I walk, I have a better understanding of how the footpaths, city buildings, railroad tracks and cafes fit like puzzle pieces into the original, impressive structure of the mythic river and stone bluffs. Once you have made this distinction in your own neighborhood, Endredy suggests an exploratory walk to better understand your organic map. Walk around your neighborhood and begin to create a new map based on the organic reality of where you are. Notice and register all of the natural features of the landscape, such as hills, valleys, individual trees, shrubs, flowers, birds, puddles, insects, rocks and so on. Now look up and realize that you are standing in the center of your local home circle a circle inside many other larger ecological circles. What you find inside your immediate home circle will tell you a lot about yourself.
Move Your Mind-Body I havent forgotten about the most basic physiological elements of mindful walking motion and breath. This is the disciplined side of mind-body walking I referred to earlier. When you calm your mind, breathe deeply and focus on the movement of your body, walking turns into a form of meditation. Conscientiously mix these ideas with an urban and ecological sense of adventure, and you are on your way to a healthy and fully integrated mind-body workout. As stated in body + soul, Treat walking as a practice, and it will become not only something you do with your legs but also a way to bring your mind, body and spirit in balance.

illions of people are suffering needlessly because they dont know about homeopathy, dont believe in it or it isnt covered by their health insurance. This book is an effort to remedy that. Homeopathy is the most comprehensive book on this subject ever written for the budding amateur. It takes the reader from basic theory and practice to using remedies for both common and life-threatening acute health problems. With brevity and clarity, it explains homeopathy, legitimizes it and tells how to use it. The book covers acute conditions that are either life threatening or painful, or could become so if not treated. It describes about 180 medical problems
in plain terms, each description distilled into a single paragraph of the most useful information. The reader can look up an ailment and match the symptoms with a remedy. I found that the average person who uses this method can consistently select the correct remedy for ailments ranging from measles to meningitis. The remedial profiles are carefully worded, to easily distinguish one from another. Since the reader is not trained in diagnosis, the book also explains how to find a remedy when you dont know the name of the ailment. Conveniently arranged in alphabetical order, one finds such diverse topics as food poisoning; heart attack; stroke; cancer pain; mercury, lead and arsenic poisoning; rabies; staphylococcus and
streptococcus infections; gangrene and ailments from vaccination. Included are all the epidemic diseases, such as Anthrax, Cholera, Bubonic Plague and virulent influenza; childhood diseases such as measles, mumps, chickenpox, scarlet fever and diphtheria are also covered. For each condition, the book offers remedies for both prevention and treatment, with a note that homeopathic remedies work even for antibiotic-resistant infections. A chapter on pregnancy and birth covers topics from morning sickness to difficult labor, post-partum hemorrhage to newborn asphyxia. The reader may be surprised to learn that there are remedies for breach presentation, which can induce the baby to turn around. Emotional states are given their due

Effective, safe, affordable and free of chemical side effects the benets of homeopathy are endless! Already established in the national health care systems of England, France, Germany and the Netherlands, homeopathic treatments are used by over 500 million people worldwide. Alan Schmuklers Homeopathy discusses the history and science of this alternative medicine and provides a comprehensive list of proven remedies safe for people and animals. According to the author, Homeopathy is a medical science which uses natural substances to mimic illness and stimulate healing. It is based on the idea of like cures like. Any substance which can produce symptoms in a healthy person can cure those same symptoms in a sick person. In England, the royal family has used homeopathy since the 1830s. Packed with homeopathic treatments for arthritis, colds, food poisoning, insomnia, Lyme disease and morning sickness, this handy reference guide also includes information on homeopathic immunization and rst aid. Schmukler gives helpful instructions for matching remedies with specic symptoms. For example, almost everyone comes down with the common cold from time to time. Homeopathy describes nine different sets of cold symptoms and provides remedies for each of those groups of symptoms. Six different remedies are included to treat various sets of symptoms associated with sunburn. The symptoms are fully described so you can choose the exact remedy that can help you. Remedies are also included for wounds and injuries. Hundreds of treatments for various ailments and injuries treatments proven effective through 200 years of study are shared, with instructions on ingesting them correctly, making remedies at home and stretching your supply.
with remedies for grief, rage, depression and a wide range of fears. Even acute psychoses are covered. In a crisis, such remedies are invaluable. They work quickly and without the drugging effects associated with pharmaceuticals. The pain of various ailments is addressed throughout the book. For example, there are remedies for the pain of dental problems, gallbladder issues, stomach ulcers, neuralgia and post-surgical pain. There is also a separate section devoted to different kinds of pain, including radiating, throbbing, wandering and unbearable pain. Whether your occupation is nursing, baking, tailoring, carpentry, farming or firefighting, youll find remedies for yourself. About 40 occupations and activities are listed with remedies for the relevant occupational hazards. The chapter Preventing Illness with Homeopathy offers remedies to prevent
27 diseases including Tetanus, Lyme, smallpox, Yellow Fever, Diptheria and Malaria. This information will be especially useful when vaccines are in short supply, or for people who dont tolerate vaccines or prefer not to use them. When an acute health problem is clearly associated with the liver, kidneys, heart or lungs, the reader can consult the section called Organ Remedies. Running low on remedies? The book also details how to make them last forever or make them from scratch. Aside from its everyday usefulness, this book will be a valuable asset when conventional medical care is either not available or not effective. In the next decade, the medical system could be temporarily overwhelmed by epidemics of antibiotic-resistant infections, natural disasters, outbreaks of exotic diseases, virulent flus, terrorist attacks, power failures or mass illness arising from genetically-engineered food (now that the
species barrier has been violated). This book will empower the average person to help him or herself in such a crisis. In addition, individuals with acute health problems who cant tolerate conventional medications and those who simply cant afford acute care will find this work extremely helpful. To inspire the reader, the book details some of homeopathys historical successes. During the epidemics of the 19th century, when death rates from typhus, plague or smallpox ranged from 30 to 60%, homeopaths routinely cured between 85 and 97% of their patients. The book also records homeopathys achievements in preventing illness. In the 1974 meningitis epidemic in Brazil, 18,640 children were given a homeopathic remedy to prevent the disease. It was almost 100% effective. In a smallpox epidemic in Iowa in 1902, the homeopathic preventive remedy was 97% effective.

Agates come in a wide variety of colors and appearance but their distinctive bands of color hint at the layers and hidden depths inside us all. Amethysts are widely used by psychics and can help those who struggle with compulsive behaviors and addictions of all kinds. Aventurine is thought to be a particularly holistic, all-purpose healer, on a spiritual, emotional, mental and physical level. Bloodstone has been associated with health and well-being for centuries to treat diseases and to speed healing after surgery, ease menstrual cramps and prevent miscarriage.
Carnelian has come to symbolize faithful companions and the souls passage into the next world. Carnelian is also associated with eloquence and selfconfidence. Citrine is associated with the radiance and optimism of the sun, and is associated with wealth and financial success. Flourite is often associated with advanced civilization and high technology, and can be good if you do a lot of work with computers, or if you need to program yourself to think in more logical terms. Hematite is one of the bestknown grounding stones. It can absorb and disburse negative thoughts and emotions. Its reflective sheen makes it an ideal material for scrying.
Howlite may be one youd like to use if you are trying to reach those who have crossed to the Other Side. Jasper comes in a rainbow of colors and designs. It has been popular for centuries, and might be the original touchstone. Lapis lazuli, the ancient alchemists stone of heaven, does seem to reflect the skies above us. And for centuries, painters have revered the blue pigment of crushed lapis lazuli. Malachite can reportedly help buyers get bargains and it can help a salesperson close a deal. During the Middle Ages, some used it as protection against black magic.

Moonstone embodies all of the magic and mystery we associate with the Moon. Some believe moonstones will grow brighter or dimmer along with the phases of the Moon. Obsidian is like a tinted window into the soul. Many people believe obsidian is the most grounding stone available. Today, obsidian is commonly used for scrying. Peridot has been valued for centuries to protect from enchantments and to gain foresight and divine inspiration. Hot Stone Massage Popular in spas and holistic healing centers, hot stone sessions melt away tension and complement crystal healing and other forms of spiritual therapy, such as Reiki. Hot stone massage kits contain almost everything you need to get started detailed instructions and precautions, an assortment of smooth, rounded stones, and a warmer, which is typically a roaster-style oven that you can fill with hot water and stones. If you dont have a hot stone massage kit, you can experiment with any large, smooth, rounded stones you have on hand. Black basalt rocks are best, because they retain heat the longest and wont split or crack over time. Wash your stones with soap and water every time you use them. Warm your stones in hot water, but be sure to monitor the temperature with a thermometer: stones hotter than 130 Fahrenheit can leave serious burns. If you plan to simply lay the stones, dont put them directly on the skin; use a thin towel or flannel sheet to absorb some of the heat. You can put inch-long cosies between your toes, and arrange other small stones in a daisy-petal pattern on your face. You can put palm-size stones on each of the chakras on the front of your body, or run two columns of stones down your back, on either side of your spinal column. (Do not put any hot stones directly on the spinal column or on any protruding bones.) If you plan to use the stones as massage tools, oil both the stones and the skin with massage oil first.
Sometimes we get so busy with day-to-day existence that we forget there is a more spiritual side to life. Then, when we do seek a spiritual path, we are often confronted with so many teachings and doctrines that nding a path to enlightenment becomes overwhelming. Shouldnt it be easier? Author Amy Elizabeth Garcia thinks so, and in Real Steps to Enlightenment she presents a way for you to go within and nd your own path to the divine.
She simplies the journey to enlightenment into 33 spiritual goals such as following joy, developing trust in the universe, relinquishing the need to control and fostering peace. You dont have to follow them one after another. Rather, you can deal with each issue as it arises in your life. Focusing on a specic spiritual lesson, each chapter begins with a divine message from Jahallah, the authors spiritual guide throughout the writing of this book, with stories from Jahallahs human incarnations. Garcia goes a step further in bringing these concepts to life by sharing her own life experiences and spiritual growth. Every chapter includes a prayer inspired by the angels as a reminder to connect to the spiritual realms for support. At the conclusion of each chapter Garcia challenges you to think of three ways to bring these qualities of Spirit into your own daily life, with suggestions to help you get started. Connecting with the Divine is crucial for spiritual advancement, and Real Steps to Enlightenment is the ideal guide for those ready to begin.

n the morning of September 11, 2001, I received a wake up call. The consciousness of separation was creating chaos around the world. A loud voice in my head said, Its time to get to work. To me, that meant, Get to work on healing, on loving, on figuring out your own salvation. I vowed to break free of my complacency and do something to help ease the pain. I immersed myself in metaphysical writing and healing practices. I began to take steps to know myself, to heal my life and to teach what I learned to others. When I decided to write the book, Real Steps to Enlightenment, I knew that I would have assistance from the spiritual realms. I had an interactive relationship with my God, my angels and my guides. I wanted to let others know about these unseen, and often untapped, resources. My angels gave me guidance and my healing masters helped me to remove unwanted energies. My personal guides supported me on various projects. Each day, I sat down at my computer and asked for inspiration. A wise and gentle causal plane entity named Jahallah came through. We communicated by a process called conscious channeling. Jahallah had a message to share about unity and about reconnecting the earth with the heavenly realms. The Jah in his name signified the Jehovah of the Old Testament. Allah is the name of God in the Koran. Jahallah told me that he presented this name as a reminder that the God of Israel and the God of Islam are One. He understood that the most important step toward enlightenment was to end separation from the Divine and from each other. During one incarnation, Jahallah had been a holy man in Turkey. He related stories from his agrarian community that reminded me of biblical

parables. Maybe he understood, as Jesus did, that people easily remembered stories and the lessons they taught. This prompted me to share my own modern-day experiences in the second part of each chapter. They illustrated how average people mastered lifes challenges. These people were able to access their innate abilities such as healing and clairvoyance. When they became clear about their goals and took spirit-guided action, miracles happened. Some contemplatives may have reached an enlightened state by meditative seclusion. Others may have pored over sacred texts, hoping to find redemption by following the doctrines and disciplines of ancient theologians. However, in our fast-paced society, the old ways may not work for everyone. I have found that most of us can advance spiritually just by living out our day-today existence in a more refined state of awareness. I believe that we are entering a new era where individuals are going within to figure out their own unique paths to God. Real Steps to Enlightenment is a guide to help people achieve that connection. The format of this book is unique. It provides readers with four steps that combine to help people to quickly become spirit-centered and create change. The first two are 1) information (spiritual principles) and 2) inspiration (stories that illustrate these principles in action). The chapters cover a broad spectrum of subjects peace, trust, joy, prosperity, synergy, etc. The readers then take the final steps in order to bring these energies into their own lives. They set their personal 3) intention (through prayer affirmations) in order to take 4) action (unique to the individual). Many people read self-help books and later store them away on a bookshelf to gather dust. Real Steps to Enlightenment
is designed to be a touchstone for daily living. I started a practice of opening the book at random to use it as an oracle for my day. I usually received the perfect lesson that helped me to live more consciously and solve problems easily. Each morning, you can set an intention with the system to create a quality in your life such as harmony, clarity or release. The Universe will speedily provide you with opportunities to master those energies. Some lessons will be easy and pleasurable. Some will hit you like a brick to get your attention. In any case, you will be moving forward! Our planet is currently undergoing a profound transformation. Tuning in to our spiritual guidance may be essential for our survival. I believe that an awakening is happening across the globe. However, this new creation is coming with birth pains wars, natural disasters and other catastrophic events. The good new is that we have choices we can be destroyed by these things, we can anesthetize ourselves into inactivity or we can take concrete action to manifest positive change. Its time to get to work.

any people may not know exactly what chakras are or what their purpose is, but most of us understand that having positive, balanced energy is essential for spiritual and physical wellbeing. The chakras are a fundamental part of our human energy system; energetic points (rather than physical ones) that connect our energy body to our physical body. The seven primary chakras run along the spine, starting with the root chakra at the base of the spine and continuing up to the crown chakra at the top of the head. Each chakra has a number of physical and spiritual correspondences, but their primary purpose is to receive, assimilate and distribute universal energy throughout the human body. David Pond, in his book Chakras for Beginners, presents a succinct introduction to each of the seven primary chakras and their purpose. He helps readers understand each chakras energy focus, and then goes on to explore both the balanced and unbalanced expression of that energy:
Z First or root chakra survival Z Second or sacral chakra sexuality Z Third or solar plexus chakra power Z Fourth or heart chakra love Z Fifth or throat chakra creativity Z Sixth or third eye chakra intuition Z Seventh or crown chakra spirituality

Eastern cultures have long understood and worked with chakras, meridians and other aspects of the human energy system using healing techniques such as acupuncture, but here in the West, this holistic approach to wellbeing was virtually unknown for most people until the last quarter of the 20th century. One of the first Western books to explore the chakras and their role in our health was Wheels of Life by Anodea Judith. First published in 1987 and in print continuously since then, this classic guide is now considered one of the seminal books on chakras. Completely updated and expanded, Wheels of Life now has updated material on relationships, evolution and healing, and an entirely new section on raising children with healthy chakras.

Anmese a descubrir esa energa, dispngase a recibirla y transmitirla. Le recomiendo especialmente que lea Reiki para principiantes, escrito por David F. You have magical hands This articles title is about what a man told my brother ten years ago, while we were on vacation in a small town in the mountains of northern Chile, well known for its beauty and cosmic energy. People say that in this place is possible to find the same energy as the one founded in the Tbet. After hearing what this nice man just said, my family and I could not help giggling with skepticism. He continued: Whenever you feel sore he addressed my grandma ask your grandson to put his hands on the specific place where you feel the pain, and you will feel relieved. Ok, it is true that my brother can make wonderful artistic things with his hands; in fact, since a very young age he
proved to have a talent for drawing and art in general. But that he had special healing powers I totally doubted it. A couple of years later I read an article about holistic healing systems that covered yoga, universal energy and Reiki, a totally unknown word for me but which caught my attention right away. It was then, when I learned about this healing system, which uses the energy from the universe. In Japenese, Rei means universal and Ki means vital energy. This energy is exactly what benefits our mental and physical health. I got even more excited when I read that this energy is usually transmitted through touch and, as long as you strongly believe in it, anybody can do it. The experience with my brother came to my mind again. At that time, I didnt believe it, and in that skeptical state, of course, I was not ready to get into any holistic healing system. However, that article encouraged me to keep researching, and I got so enthusiastic about this field, that I ended up getting a certification in a healing technique similar to Reiki. I have been practicing the application of energy through my hands on others and myself for nine years, often getting instant results. Reiki is not the only healing system out there. You can find other healing techniques with different names and numerous teachers, but the energy is always the same for everybody. If we learn how to use it, we can use its benefits for ourselves and others. We just need to believe in the art of healing. I encourage you to discover this type of energy, and I suggest reading Reiki para principiantes (Reiki for Beginners) by David F. Vennells, whose words will guide you through a new system of personal growth and will make you discover that you also have magical hands. Believe it!

o you believe in guardian angels? Have you ever felt the presence of yours? Maybe a near-miss on the highway, where a split second made the difference between continuing your journey as planned and taking a detour to intensive care? Or maybe it was something that put you just the right place at just the right time to hear or receive the exact thing that you most needed at that moment anything from a job offer to a kind word from a stranger. Maybe your actions have saved someone elses life. In that case, perhaps their guardian angel was working through you! What about signs? Have you ever had an experience where things just seemed like too much of a coincidence? How many times have you heard someone exclaim, its a sign! about something that might not seem like a big deal to you, but seems to have incredible significance for them? Call it serendipity synchronicity good luck providence intuition your guardian angel or even a sign often these become some of the most memorable moments of our lives. In the 21st century, we have come to understand much more about how the world works. Instead of Demeter and Persephone, science has explained why the seasons change and even how ice ages come and go. We no longer fear the end of the world when the sun darkens in the middle of the day. Instead, we can watch the dark path of the eclipse move across the earth via satellite images transmitted from outer space! We can literally glimpse other worlds from the microscopic to the cosmic. But our belief
in a force greater than ourselves God, Goddess, Buddha, Spirit, the Universe or other names used throughout the ages seems as strong as ever.
Synchronicity is not random. Neither is the Universe. And believe it or not, neither are the events of your life.
Guardian angels and divine signs are the link between the one and the One. They are messengers, comforters, protectors; and the moments when we feel their presence are often when we feel most alive, most connected to the divine. The three wise men are said to have journeyed for many nights to see the newborn Jesus Christ, following a sign in the heavensthe Star of Bethlehemthat they knew was a sign of the Saviors birth. The current Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of millions of Tibetan Buddhists, is believed to be the fourteenth reincarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion. As a child he was found to display an extraordinary familiarity with the previous Dalai Lamas possessions, a sign of both his past and his destiny. On November 30, 1835, the mother of newborn Samuel Clemens predicted great things for him because Halleys Comet blazed across the sky at the moment of his birth. After a long life of fame and shifting fortunes the same man, now known to millions as Mark Twain, saw the comets return as a sign: I came in with Halleys comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I dont go out with Halleys comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: Now, here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together. Mark Twain died on April 20, 1910 76 years and one day after the famous comet reappeared in the sky.
Whats Your Sign? No matter where your spiritual path may lead in this life, you can cultivate a relationship with the divine. And according to Adrian Calabrese, author of Sacred Signs, one of the best ways to do this is by asking for a sign. Signs may come directly from the Universe, or through people who have passed on, spirit guides or angels. They will most often appear in your material world as a physical manifestation. Sometimes signs will come to you through folks living here on Earth with us. Sacred signs are perfect examples of what has become known to many as synchronicity. Originally coined by noted psychologist Carl Jung, synchronicities are those remarkable instances where an event seems too coincidental to be completely random, yet is not something that you could have consciously engineered. For example, about a year ago I moved and was randomly assigned a new home telephone number. Id been

thinking about a friend I hadnt seen in over a year, but she only had a cell phone, and that number was no longer in service. My friend is a musician and had been planning to move to another state, so I assumed that she was hundreds of miles away. But just weeks after I moved in, she left me a message at my new number inviting me to a New Years Eve party or so I thought. I called her back and soon discovered that I had inherited the old telephone number of a mutual friend and one of her former bandmates! In the middle of a major metropolitan area, moving to a new neighborhood with a different three-digit prefix, what are the chances that Id receive that particular phone number? I actually didnt spend that much time to wonder, because I chose to see it as yet another example of synchronicity, a sign that my friend and I were meant to reconnect. Since that wrong number, we have become even closer and I now count her as one of my best friends. Synchronicities are more than just coincidences, says Adrian Calabrese. Synchronicity is not random. Neither is the Universe. And believe it or not, neither are the events of your life. Synchronicity is an integral part of the process when you ask for sacred signs. It is the method the Universe uses to get the answer to you. Sacred Signs was written to help anyone learn the language of signs. Most people first notice the signs that are so strange that you will never forget them. But with practice, you can begin to ask for signs as a form of guidance, and interpret the answers you receive from the Universe on a regular basis. Anyone can ask for and receive a sign. In Sacred Signs youll learn about the three keys to this process in detail, but in short they are: ask, accept and trust. Ask for a sign regarding a question or choice you may be facing. Accept that the answer will come, often in a form that you never would have expected. And trust that the answer you receive is for your highest good, even if it may not seem that way at the time. It is important to be sincere in your request, as your sincerity and trust is precisely what connects you with the Source and assures that the guidance you receive will truly be in your best interest. There are several longer relaxation meditations in Sacred Signs designed to help you reach the calm, relaxed and focused state that is best for requesting your sign, but for our purposes you may use any meditation or relaxation method that you are comfortable with. Suggested techniques include focusing on your breath, relaxing all the muscles of your body from head to toe, or even focusing your eyes on a candle flame. Do whatever feels most appropriate and helps you achieve this calm, focused state. Once you have relaxed your body and your mind, recite the following affirmation. You are sending your energy out to the Universe and opening yourself up to receive sacred signs.
Prepare to Tap into the Power: Affirmation Thank you, God/Goddess/Spirit, for calming my mind and heart, and opening my spiritual channels to receive your messages. I am willing to release any blocks and outmoded or fearful thoughts about communicating with you, and ask that you guide me to my highest good. And so it is!

Ghosts do not exist. Ghosts are real, detectable entities. The juxtaposition of these two statements is much more complex than you would imagine. Everyone, from paranormalists to religionists, from astronomers to skeptics to zoologists, seems to have an opinion. And since fraud has accompanied some paranormal research, the eld is all the more difcult to examine. The Case for Ghosts by J. Allan Danelek works to dispel the controversy behind this eld by taking an objective approach to the subject, without trying to prove any perspective over another. Well-researched study and the presentation of theories along all points on the spectrum, from the unquestioning believer to the most adamant skeptic, makes for an engaging and fascinating read.
The book begins by establishing a thorough understanding of the issues underlying these arguments. Looking at the role of science, including its shortcomings, will provide insight into how paranormal phenomena is evaluated and criticized crucial concepts to grasp. This includes descriptions of types of hauntings and ways that hauntings are rationalized. The next section of The Case for Ghosts focuses on how you can become a ghosthunter. It begins with a description of different types of cameras you might use pointing out not only common photographer errors yielding images mistaken for ghosts, but also revealing how photos can be faked. The book also highlights prociency frameworks for Electronic Voice Phenomenon recorders, electromagnetic eld meters, motion detectors, night vision goggles and ion detectors. Danelek then looks at the validity behind issues of satanic demons, malevolent entities and ghostly parasites, using reported experiences that lead up to a surprising conclusion. Finally, youll learn about spirit guides what they are and what theyre not and how to communicate with them, as well as methods of talking with the dead. If you are interested in ghosts and spirit communication, this book will give you a thoroughly objective, modern overview of a fascinating and controversial subject.

etting out to write a book about ghosts is not so much a labor of love as it is a voyage of self discovery, for the subject can hardly be broached without asking some very difficult and important questions having to do with immortality, God and what really happens to us when we die. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that it is frequently difficult to find a book on the subject that attempts to touch upon each of these areas in any depth, which was the reason I felt compelled to write The Case for Ghosts. Unlike most books on the subject, I wanted to do more than merely pen another collection of anecdotal stories and case studies. I hoped, instead, to demonstrate that ghosts are not something to be afraid of, though they need to be respected and taken seriously, but that they are something quite natural, important and integral to our world. I also hope to impress upon the reader that they are not figments of our imagination; ghosts are as real as the flesh-and-blood people we deal with everyday, and every bit as human. Which is why, in studying them, we can recognize that we are not dealing with something alien and spooky, but are simply interacting with people who no longer possess a physical nature, yet still require our understanding, our patience and our compassion if they are ever to find their way home. In other words, in dealing with ghosts we are simply dealing with people in another context, and that, I think, is the key to understanding these extra-worldly visitors. The best way to get this point across, I believed, was to create a book for the layman that asks the kinds of questions most people usually ask about ghosts. Thats exactly what The Case for Ghosts does. For example, how does one become a ghost and, by extension, is it something everyone becomes when they die or only some people? Is there really such a thing as a demon? How does an EM-Meter work? Can we or should we attempt to communicate with a ghost, and might we be inviting something unexpected and unwelcome into our lives if we do? It asks the sorts of questions I used to ask and answers them in a way that leaves the reader to decide for themselves what to believe and, more importantly, what not to believe. Further, it provides the reader with a good, basic understanding of how ghost hunting works on a practical level, along with some theories about what ghosts may be, how they manifest and what they mean to our lives. Running the gamut from spirit photography and EVPs to the power of the mind and the possibility of malevolent entities and demon possession, it is my effort to provide the curious mind with a well-rounded, objective and hopefully thought-provoking look at the entire range of paranormal activity, all told in a straightforward,

non-academic style. I even invite the reader to participate in this world by providing a safe and beneficial way of interacting and communicating with the realm of pure spirit through the use of a spirit guide another topic that rarely makes it into the traditional ghost hunting books where I explain what a guide is, how it operates and how it benefits us in our quest towards greater spiritual growth. It is designed specifically for those individuals who have always longed for the wisdom and advice of a higher power, but found that power difficult to access through traditional religious avenues. It should prove beneficial to anyone truly interested in developing their spiritual nature and understanding themselves better. Of course, this work is neither perfect nor the final word on the subject. It has its flaws and shortcomings, just as any book that tries to examine the unknown does. But it is an honest attempt to bring into the open a subject that has too long remained on the periphery of serious discussion, thereby benefiting anyone who refuses to believe the world of the five senses to be sufficient to answer every question. It is a book for seekers of truth, not purveyors of it, that might even be capable of giving the most hardened skeptic at least something to think about. Hopefully, that is its greatest strength, purpose and value, for its the underlying rationale in my writing it.

Information contained in the human energy field
Your aura contains your own energy and energy from other people and the environment. Everything about you everything you have ever been, ever thought, dreamed, experienced, felt, desired, as well as every relationship youve ever had is recorded, stored and transmitted through the aura. For the purpose of doing a clairvoyant reading, it is often helpful to distinguish between the levels of the aura, imagining that each layer is separate and unique from the others. This makes it easier to navigate your way through the complex system of information contained in your readees energetic field. In my experience, the first layer (the first auric body) often contains information about the physical body since it is closest to the body. The second layer corresponds to emotions and sexual energies. The third layer often has information in it about power, control and self-esteem. The fourth layer seems to contain information about matters of the heart and relationships. The fifth concerns communication. The sixth layer contains information about how a person perceives himself or herself. Finally, the seventh layer, farthest from the body but closest to the outside world, often holds information about other peoples perceptions as well as foreign energies that are entering and leaving the aura.

Carl Llewellyn Weschcke article continued from page 2 In that sense, all healing is really rejuvenation the process of restoring and re-charging the dominant matrix. But information packages can also be perceived as programs. We use programs all the time many of them have been imposed on us through education, advertising, experience and our intersection with other people. We also have the ability to choose our own programming through choices in areas of self-improvement, healing and spirituality. In recent years we have come to term this ability of self-programming empowerment, because that is exactly what it can do it gives us the power to change our present destiny for one of better health, longer life, joy, abundance and above all, self-freedom and spiritual growth. With such choice, life is both a journey and an adventure. This issue of New Worlds introduces Colleen Deatsman, a pioneer in energizing techniques and self-programming. NW: Whats next for you? CD: Energy for Life is the second in a trio of books that describe my methods for helping people regain and maintain their personal power and health. Im still in the process of writing the third book about using the shamanic journey as a healing and energetic tool of wisdom. We live in an age where we are slowly being stripped of our self-determination. We have become cogs in a vast socioeconomic machine that shows no sign of freeing us. We must be our own emancipators. Awareness is the key to our empowerment. As we build our awareness of our health, of our energy, of our world we reclaim our potential. Within that potential lie the seeds for making this a better world. For as long as I am able, I plan to dedicate my time and my energy to the service of building awareness and to the empowerment of the individual. I feel that, for me, there is no greater calling.
deck of tarot cards from choosing the right card for the right purpose, to creating ritual card spreads aimed at actively manifesting the desired energies, to invoking and working with the tarot angels who rule over the cards. Using this book as a guide, we encourage readers to design their own rituals for creating magical talismans from the cards of the tarot.
Jo Whittemore interview continued from page 29 first because of the situations in which theyre placed. It doesnt allow for so much adolescent bickering, and because of their emotional growth, they are as much aware of this fact as the audience. I used to read the second or third or even eighth book in another authors series without a thought to how much work goes into keeping each new story original, yet consistent with what already exists. Now that Ive gone through something similar, it makes me truly appreciate the phrase to be continued.
Cicero article continued from page 19 talismans. A telesmatic image is an image of a deity, archangel or angel that is consciously constructed by the magician. Each Hebrew letter is associated with a set of images including concepts such as winged or fierce. The physical image of an angel is built from head to foot based on those associations linked to the specific letters of the angels name. Then the complete image of the angel is drawn, painted or simply visualized in the imagination using those esoteric associations. The creation of a telesmatic image of an archangel or angel that can be visualized makes it possible for the magician to create a personal link or contact point with the angel. Telesmatic images of the tarot angels invoked in ritual will naturally make tarot talismans more potent. Tarot Talismans was designed to provide readers with a complete system for creating talismans from any favorite
Colleen Deatsman interview continued from page 5 ter. The exercises I teach in Energy for Life are designed to be done anywhere at any time. Once theyre learned, you can put them to use during all those infuriating delay times and be the better for it. Then, when you do have an extra 10 or 15 minutes, you can pop in the CD and experience an energy intensive. Maybe you can do so while youre waiting to pick up the kids, or during part of your lunch hour. Maintaining energy and health is a matter of focus and intent, not of long hours of time-dedicated work. A little bit of focus and remembering to take advantage of those down times is all you need to revitalize and re-energize yourself. Then, maybe youll have some of the extra energy you need to live life more fully.
Jennifer Spees article continued from page 67 Guardian angels bestow both blessings and protection, says Richard Webster, author of Spirit Guides and Angel Guardians. Our angels most often make themselves known at those critical moments in our lives when we are most in need, especially when facing grave danger or crushing despair. But you can also contact your guardian angel whenever you feel you need guidance, protection, or even reassurance. In many ways, reaching out to your guardian angel is similar to asking the Universe for a sign.
