1. Write the two parameter and three parameter models for psuedoplastic and dilatant
fluids and explain various terms in it. [16]
2. (a) Write short notes on Boundary conditions, their significance, importance and
selection
(b) Write short notes on shell balances. [16]
3. Derive an equation to calculate the efficiency of a cooling fin. [16]
4. Air at 270 C flows normal to a 730 C, 30mm o.d. water pipe. The air moves at 1m/s.
Estimate the rate of heat transfer per unit length kinematic viscosity=1.624m2/s,
Thermal conductivity=0.0261W/mk, Npr for air=0.702 [16]
5. Chlorine is being absorbed from a gas in a small experimental wetted wall tower.
The absorbing fluid is water, which is moving with an average velocity of 17.7
cm/sec. What is the absorption rate in g moles / hour if DCl2−H2O = 1.26 ×10−5
cm2 /sec. in the liquid phase and if the saturation concentration of chlorine in water
is 0.823 g Cl2 per 100 g of water. Ignore chemical reaction between Cl2 and H2 O.
The tower height is 13 cm and radius 1.4 cm. [16]
6. (a) Derive the equation of continuity considering cylindrical co-ordinates.
(b) Reduce the equation for incompressible fluids. [14+2]
7. Consider an isothermal incompressible fluid radially between two porous cylindrical
shells. Assume steady, axisymmetric, laminar flow and neglect the end effects.
(a) Obtain a differential equation using the equation of motion.
(b) Solve the above equation and find the raidal pressure distribution along the
radius of the pipe. [6+10]
8. At successive equal time intervals of a few milliseconds the following velocities were
measured by means of hot wire anemometers at two points 0.05 m apart.

1. (a) What is transport phenomena? Write the Newton’s law of viscosity, Fouri-
erslaw of heat conduction and Ficks law of diffusivity and explain why these
three laws can be considered analogous.
(b) A flat plate 15 m long has an edge facing the flow direction. Air is flowing
over the plate at 1000 cm/s. The air properties are ρ = 1.32 gm/lit. and µ =
0.018 cp. Calculate the boundary layer thickness at 125 cm from the leading
edge. [16]

2. (a) Write short notes on Boundary conditions, their significance, importance and

3. Derive an expression for the temperature distribution in a viscous fluid in steady


laminar flow between large flat parallel plates. Both plates are maintained at con-
stant temperature. Neglect the temperature dependence of viscosity and thermal
conductivity.

4. Two vertical plates are spaced 6mm apart. One is maintained at 1000 C and the
other at 200 C. Air is flowing between plates at a pressure of 1atmosphere and you
may assume that the volumetric flow of upward moving stream is same as that of
downward moving stream. Evaluate average velocity of air if µ = 2 × 10−6 poise.

5. Sulphuric acid is diffusivity through water at 25C. The concentrations of the acid at
planes separated by a distance of 3 cm are 10 and 5-weight percentage respectively.
Calculate.
The total mass transfer rate. The transfer rate by bulk flow only between these
two planes.
Diffusivity of sulphuric acid at 250 C is 0.6 × 10−5 m2/hr The density of the acid
solution can be assumed to be the same as that of water. [16]

7. A Stormer viscosity consists essentially of two concentric cylinders, the inner of


which rotates while the outer is held stationary. Viscosity is determined by mea-
suring the rate of rotation of the inner cylinder under the application of a known
torque. Develop an expression for the velocity distribution in this kind of apparatus,
as a function of applied torque, for laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid. [16]

8. Explain the turbulent momentum flux (tensor), turbulent energy flux (vector) and
turbulent mass flux (vector). [8+8]

1. Two parallel plates spaced at 0.025 m apart contain a psuedoplastic fluid for which
the model is given by τ = 1.2(-dvx /dy)0.8 . The bottom plate moves with a velocity
of 1m/min and the other plate moves in the opposite direction at a rate of 15
m/min. Find the velocity of the fluid at distances of 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 cm from the
bottom plate and draw the velocity profile. [16]

in air is 0.02873 m2 hr. Calculate the mass transfer coefficient and mass flux for the
system. At 1000 C the properties of air are ρ = 0.946 kg/m3 . Cp =1.0009 KJ/kg 0 C.

radius of the inner porous sphere and R is the radius of the outer porous sphere.

The outer surface of the inner one is at T1 and the outer surface of the outer one is
at a lower temperature Tk. Dry air at a temperature Tk is blown outward radially
from the inner shell into the intervening space and out through the outer shell.
Develop an expression for the required rate of heat removal from the inner sphere
as a function of the mass rate of flow of gas. Assume steady laminar flow and low
gas velocity. Use both the equation of continuity and equation of energy. [16]
