FABRICATION 2.1 General Fabrication shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3. 2.2 Bending Hot bending is not permitted in the field. 2.3 Welding a. All welding shall be by a metal arc process. b. Coated electrodes shall be thoroughly dried prior to use. c. Permanently welded-in back-up strips shall not be used. d. Covered welding electrodes shall be in accordance with Tables 1A and 1B, Covered Electrodes. e. Bare electrodes (for inert gas and submerged arc welding) shall be in accordance with Tables 2A and 2B, Bare Electrodes. 2.4 Heat Treatment a. Where postweld heat treatment of carbon and low alloy steels is required, the weld joint shall be heat treated immediately after the completion of welding. The joint shall not be allowed to cool below 300F (150C) prior to heat treatment. If this is not practical, the weld and adjacent pipe shall be uniformly heated to 600F (315C), wrapped with insulation and allowed to cool. Heat treatment may then be performed later. b. Postweld heat treatment or thermal stabilization heat treatment of any austenitic material other than Alloy 800/800H/800HT shall only be permitted with the prior written permission of UOP. c. Where heat treatment of Alloy 400, Alloy 600, or Alloy 800 piping is required, it shall be performed in an atmosphere essentially sulfur-free. d. Alloy 800, 800H, and 800HT shall be postweld heat treated at 1650F 25F (900C 15C) for 1 hours, for thicknesses up to 1 inch (25mm), and for 1 hours plus 1 hour/inch (25mm) of thickness in excess of 1 inch (25mm). e. When postweld heat treatment of Alloy 400 is specified, heat treatment shall be at a temperature of 1150-1250F (620-675C) with a holding time of 1 hour per inch (25mm) of thickness and minimum holding time of 1 hour. Follow with cooling in still air.
