It *ight be a ho*e for a *edieval lord but a rich lord *ight own *any castles and *ove fro* one to another. 4ften soldiers would be based there to protect the countryside. though so*eti*es the lord didn3t trust the locals and the castle was intended to scare the*. It *ight also be used as a courthouse. a prison or even as a storehouse for food.

:ery early castles were built of wood and earth. particularly if they had to be put up ;uic-ly. )ater on they were always built of stone. in bloc-s that were so heavy and carefully put together that a surprisingly large nu*ber survive even today.

5ost *edieval castles were divided into two parts. the *otte or -eep and the bailey. The -eep was always the strongest part. It was often where the lord lived hi*self but it was also designed so that even if invaders got into the rest of the castle the -eep could still be defended. 4ften it was on a hill *ade by piling up heaps of earth. The bailey was also defended by towers and strong walls but it contained stables. store roo*s and sleeping roo*s for the soldiers. )ater on it *ight contain a ban;ueting hall and *ore co*fortable roo*s for the lord.
