Leaders are Made.

The BC JROTC Brigade Has 62 New Officers!

Each year, the senior class at BC assumes the leadership role throughout the school, serving as the example
for the underclassmen. The way they conduct themselves will determine the overall attitude and discipline
of the school as a whole. Nowhere is this display of leadership more obvious than in the military element
of the school. Each year, seniors that choose to, are involved in the JROTC program at the school. Each of
these seniors is given a certain role in the Brigade and it is the duty of that senior to perform the duties and
functions pertaining to that specific role. Each role is that of an officer in the program. On Saturday, Septem-
ber 12, 2009, Benedictine held its annual JROTC Commissioning Ceremony at 8:00 PM in the gymnasium.
Present at the ceremony were the relatives, dates and guests of the commissionees, the entire 300 member
Corps of Cadets, along with their dates, faculty and staff. LTC M. Joseph Winters, Jr. USAF, (BC Class of
1987) was the guest speaker. Cadet Colonel Jason Zettler, this year’s Brigade Commander, received the Bri-
gade Commander’s Sabre as part of the ceremony. The ceremony was followed by a military ball. This year,
62 seniors were commissioned. For a complete listing of all commissioned officers please see page 7.

Letter from the Headmaster...

Dear Parents and Friends of BC,

With only six weeks behind us, our students have already excelled in a number of
areas. Davis Remler received the Lions Club, Hugh O’Brien award for leadership.
Davis received his award at the September Lions Club luncheon and delivered a
fine talk thanking the Lions for sponsoring him and he also described the leadership
camp he attended through the Lions. Many thanks belong to our senior Guidance
Counselor, Mr. Larry McDonald for his work in preparing Davis for the award. Mr. McDonald was pres-
ent at the luncheon for the award’s presentation. It is enormously gratifying to see one of our students so
recognized.

Both our cross country and football teams have gotten off to strong starts. Coach Curley’s runners have
steadily improved their meet records during the first part of the season capping its initial phase with a win
at the multi-team race held last week. Our football team has had its best start in many years. Thanks to
the fans of both teams for their ongoing support of our teams. The players, coaches, and parents have
put an enormous effort into the season to date and your presence means the world to them, especially our
players.

Thanks to an invitation from Msgr. Costigan, I attended a dinner at St. Peter the Apostle Church this past
weekend. While there I had the good fortune of meeting a number of BC grads. One who never ceases to
amaze me is Mr. Jack Stafford, BC ‘35’. Not only is his own loyalty to BC the stuff of legend but his en-
thusiasm for life in general is infectious. As usual, it was a delight to be in his company and I was grateful
to his daughter Beth Carter and on other occasions Kearney Fender who at various times have invited me
over to meet their Father. Such a man has the great gift of showing you what is important in life.

Another man who had much the same effect on me was Mr. Walter B. Murphy, Jr. BC ‘44’. With his sud-
den passing this month, a beacon in my life will live in my grateful memory. At so many Survivors Club
luncheons, he was constantly reminding me that life was too short to let the concerns of the moment ruin
the moment. My debt to both of these gentlemen is boundless.

It is my hope that the youthful experiences of Davis Rimler upon receiving the Lions Club award, our
sports teams on and off the field and the day to day experiences of our students in the classroom will lead
them to be the icons of another generation as is the case with Mr. Jack Stafford and Mr. Walter Murphy.

Please accept my prayers and best wishes.

Sincerely, Congratulations to
Tommy Dodsworth

PARENT
TEACHER
ORGANIZATION
This has certainly been a busy start to our school year. We have had two main events: Meet The Teacher
Night and The Commissioning Ceremony. Susanna and I are so grateful to all of the volunteers who
helped make these events a success. There were at least 80% of the parents here at Meet the Teacher night.
In everyone’s hectic schedule, this night was informative and gave the parents a “run” of their son’s school
day. The PTO sponsored a light reception at the end to capture any questions or concerns. Thanks to Betty
Shay and Paula Summerlin for keeping the spirit with the Cadet Shop!!

The Commissioning ceremony brought a more “formal” celebration to our school. A special thanks to all
Sophomore parents who made the dance and reception a memorable occasion. Kim Fogarty and Connie
Deal lead the Sophomore volunteers -What an Outstanding Job!

As we move into October, we look forward to more opportunities to meet and work with you.

Research Databases Available at www.thebc400.com

Recently, several excellent databases which can be used for research by
BC students, faculty and parents were linked to the Media Center page of the
BC Website.

The databases and their descriptions are located on the Media Center page in
the Academics and Student Life section. Included are links to several data-
bases from Facts-On-File, American National Biography Online, and GAL-
ILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online). The password/username for the
Facts-On-File and the American National Biography databases can be found
in the Parents section on the Bulletin Board. Parents should have a username
and password to access the Bulletin Board. Instructions for accessing the GALILEO password are also
located on the Bulletin Board. The databases are user friendly. Most questions can be answered in the
help section in each database.
Come Together for the Canned Food Drive
Written by: Nick Wright - Student Council Vice President

Anyone who has ever been affiliated with Benedictine knows that we are a family. Without regret, we bend over
backwards to help out a fellow cadet. Over the past few years B.C. has not only played a big part in the success
of its family, but this establishment has made great strides in the advancement of our community. We have out-
stretched our arms to give aid to those who look to us for support and guidance. This is a new year and The Second
Harvest Food Bank has come to us in need. The holidays are right around the corner and their shelves are virtu-
ally empty. Our annual canned food drive is a huge source of their holiday supply. Our drive, as well as the postal
workers holiday food drive keeps people from starving with no one to care. Benedictine has continually shown its
unending generosity toward Second Harvest over the years, and this one is no different. It’s time for each cadet to
take a stand and do his part. Faculty and staff will also be helping. The goal has been set at 20,000 items, and from
all we have planned it should easily be surpassed. We may even be able to beat the Postal Workers food drive. It
all depends on the motivation we have as a core. The name Benedictine has many meanings and among tradition,
work, and prayer, stands love and generosity. We must show love, generosity and compassion toward those who
are not as fortunate as us. This is a great way to give back to the community and I know with the proper attitude
and understanding we cannot fail. The Second Harvest Food Bank is relying on us to feed over a thousand people
over the holidays. 3 Years ago we donated the second largest amount of cans in the nation. There is no reason we
can’t go above and beyond our goal, and provide people with an unforgettable holiday experience.

A Concert by the 3rd Infantry Division Band
Written by: Dewain Smith

The 3rd Infantry Division Band from Fort Stewart present-

ed a concert to the Student Body of Benedictine Military
School Monday, 21 September 2009. Under the direction
of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan Ward, the selections
included marches and patriotic music representative of
Army history.

Our BC Students and Faculty expressed appreciation with

thunderous applause. Many students commented about the
quality of the overall ensemble and the expertise of the
band members, many of whom have music degrees on the
bachelor and masters level.

Following the concert, 3ID members worked with BC Band

members in sectional rehearsals, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, sousaphones and drums. As an added value,
Chief Ward worked with Cedric Gaines, BC’s Drum major. He presented current military commands, postures
and stances for leading our JROTC Band.

After the sectional rehearsals, BC Band members hosted a lunch for the 3ID Band. The menu was Pizza, cokes
and cake. A great time was had by all.

BC Football - “The Boys are Back in Town” Written by: Tim Blackston

The BC football program is experiencing a great deal of success on all levels for
the first half of the 2009 season. Our varsity team is 5-0, and our JV and Fresh-
men teams are both undefeated as well!! The JV team has played well with many
players gaining valuable experience. Sean Spellmen and Matthew Ginn are both
having a great year on offense behind a line of talented sophomores. Linebackers
Sean Edmisten and Conor Forbes are leading a solid defense that consistently lives
up to the model exemplified by our varsity unit.

Though we don’t have an “official” Freshman team this year, we have scheduled
several games in which the freshmen members of the team see most of the action.
The Freshmen have beaten Calvary twice and are looking forward to several more
games. The future is certainly bright for the BC football program! Good luck to the
team for the remainder of the year!

and Larry McDonald
Ryan Salmon was named as Student of the Month for
September. Ryan was nominated because of his service
to BC. He has helped with the server schedule for the
monthly masses, helped with Br. Tim’s recycling efforts,
aided in various projects for NHS, is one of our top stu-
dents, and a top swimmer as well. Ryan has been awarded
a $50 savings bond, courtesy of the PTO, and a prime
GUIDANCE parking space for the next four weeks. Congratulations,
Ryan!!!!

Andrew Whelan - National Merit Semi-Finalist

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has designated a BC senior, Andrew
Whelan, as a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist for the 2009-10 school year.
This designation represents approximately the top 1/2 of 1% of all high school se-
niors. Andrew is the son of Lawrence and Lynn Whelan. Although Andrew has many
options at this point, he is leaning toward attending Georgia Institute of Technology
and majoring in engineering. BC is very
proud of Andrew’s accomplishments
and wishes to congratulate Andrew and
his family on this extraordinary achieve-
ment. Congratulations, Andrew!

Seniors: Deadline reminder

Seniors interested in UGA are reminded that the deadline
for applying to UGA under “Early Action” is October 15,
2009. The regular admission deadline is January 15th,
2010 and the deadline for application to the Honors pro-
gram is February 1, 2010.

Seniors interested in Georgia Tech are also reminded that

the deadline for applying to Georgia Tech under “Early
Notification” is October 1, 2009, the deadline for apply-
ing for the President’s Scholar Program at Georgia Tech is
November 1, 2009 and the application deadline for regu-
lar admission at Georgia Tech is January 15, 2010.

Congratulations to Nelson Drake

Who has been selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washing-
ton, DC on October 20th- 25th. The National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC)
gives high-achieving sophomores, juniors and seniors a greater understanding of
their roles in democracy and the responsibilities of leadership. As these students
meet with the men and women who shape laws and policies, they gain an inside
perspective on key issues. Through interaction with Cabinet secretaries, members
of Congress, diplomats, lobbyists, journalists and academicians, NYLC scholars
receive direct experience and guidance that cannot be found in textbooks.

BC announces HOBY Ambassador
Davis Lloyd Remler, sophomore son of Nancy and Stephen Remler, has been
named the HOBY Ambassador for the 2009-10 school year at Benedictine
Military Academy. Davis is an outstanding young Cadet who was nominated
by his teachers at BC based on his leadership ability, academics, ethical con-
siderations, community service, and innovation. These guidelines are devised
by the HOBY organization as criteria for selection of high school Ambas-
sadors.

GUIDAN CE
HOBY programs are planned by people who believe in a young person’s abil-
ity to be a leader and affect the future for all of us. During the HOBY experi-
ence, Davis will discover and sharpen his leadership skills; he will come face-
to-face with current leaders in such fields as government, media, business and education; and, he will
be taught how to think, not what to think, empowering him to value his own opinions and ideas, and
to find the courage to express those opinions among his peers. Then, HOBY will challenge him to take
his experience back to his home, school and community and make a difference for others.

Davis is a graduate of St. Peter the Apostle School, in Savannah, Georgia, where he was the 2009
recipient of the Principal’s Award.

At Benedictine, Davis runs on the cross country team, and he serves on the color guard, for which
he was awarded Most Valuable Team Member in 2009. Also, in 2009, Davis was honored as BC’s
Superior Cadet, freshman class.

In his spare time, Davis enjoys the water. He’s licensed to SCUBA dive, but he can most often be
found sailing, fishing, skiing, or riding in the Bull River vicinity in his motor boat. A former volun-
teer at Savannah Sailing Center, Davis has completed boating and navigation courses with the Coast
Guard and the Tybee Squadron. His nautical skills will come in handy after graduation, as he intends
to serve his country in the Coast Guard.

Davis comes from a long line of BC alumni. His father Stephen Remler, graduated in the class of
1983, and his grandfather, Bruce Remler, graduated in 1952. Two other BC alums in his family are his
uncles, Robert Remler (1975) and Brett Remler (1981).

Father Ronald Gatman, Director of Campus Ministry, offered a blast from the past to include in
the Banner article on Davis Remler, the HOBY recipient for this school year. Father Ronald taught
Davis’s father, Stephen, when he was a student at BC. He also taught Brett Remler, Davis’s uncle.

Bill Curley, Davis’s Freshman English teacher, offers the following that refers to his integrity: Only
a sophomore, Davis is in his second year with the cross country team. He has been working his way
through an injury right now, yet STILL very much being a part of the team. He goes to every practice
to receive treatment and rehab for his injury, while also serving as a mentor to the new and freshmen
runners. Davis is also “team-oriented” enough to attend races and assist GREATLY in recording the
times of his teammates, ensuring the cross country team has a record of its improvement. He is truly
the student-athlete BC is most proud of, a true teammate!

Fr. Jeffrey S. Nyardy, O.S.B. Department Chair of Religious Studies/Theology at Benedictine Military
School writes the following: Davis is a gentleman who is trustworthy, always on task, and concerned
with living a moral life. Davis is a student who ends up teaching the teacher. He is always pleasant and
bright and possesses a maturity beyond his years.

Nancy Remler, mother of Davis Remler, is an associate professor at Armstrong Atlantic State Uni-
versity in Savannah, Georgia, and Stephen Remler, father of Davis, is President of Stephen Remler
Construction also in Savannah, Georgia.

a time in my life that I did not visualize myself in the teaching profession.
I guess that’s turned out to be a good thing since I’ve been teaching now
for 29 years. It’s a wonderful thing to have no regrets about what you’ve
chosen as your life’s work! I have been truly blessed. God has given me the
opportunity to teach in Catholic schools where I have the freedom and the
support to do His work. I have taught all grades from First to Eleventh and
have learned more from my students than they will have learned from me.
Each grade brought me experiences that have been both joyful and challeng-
ing at times. I’m grateful for them all.

For the past 10 years, I have been privileged to teach at Benedictine a place
very close to my heart (my husband and my three sons are graduates). I have
taught English and Religious Studies. I have been involved with the year-
book and the campus ministry programs. There is always something to do!

Sometimes, I am asked about how long I will continue to teach. I have no real answer to that question. I hope to
teach for as long as I feel I have something to offer and that God has a place for me. I still feel I am a work in
progress. Aren’t we all?

“21”
Okay, so you might be asking yourself, what is the significance of number 21? Well, number 21 has been
my favorite number for many years. This number was worn by my favorite baseball player, Roberto Cle-
mente. I lived in Puerto Rico for six years during my youth and enjoyed playing baseball very much. I
soon adopted Roberto Clement as not only my favorite player but my hero too. He was not only my hero,
but also the larger than life figure for all Puerto Rican’s. I used to try to duplicate how Roberto played
baseball every time I played baseball. I would always play the right field (Roberto’s position), and at-
tempted to catch the ball like he did with the famous basket catch. I even had a glove and bat signed by
him.

On December 31, 1972, I was celebrating the New Years Eve festivities with my family at our friend’s
house. The rest of the kids that were at the party, and myself, were enjoying ourselves playing and running
around outside, just having a great time together while the adults stayed inside and listened and danced
to the radio. On one occasion when I was getting really thirsty because of all the running around that we
were doing, we all decided to go inside to get some refreshment and saw that all of the adults were very
quiet and intently listening to the radio news. I quickly asked my dad what was going on. Then I heard
over the radio that Roberto Clemente’s plane had gone down of the coast of Puerto Rico shortly after
takeoff. I was in total shock although I must admit I was not sure what that truly meant and that Roberto
Clemente would not ever again be heard from or ever seen again.

Days after the accident I remember seeing boats heading out to the accident site to continue the search for
Roberto and those that were in the plane with him. Everyone on the island of Puerto Rico was in a state of
shock and in mourning. I remember seeing everyone dressed in black and many people just crying when
someone would mention his name. That tragic day the Puertorican people and all baseball fans had lost
one of the best baseball players that ever lived (in my humble opinion). That tragic December day I lost
my baseball hero, but gained a human hero for life.

You see, after the accident, and as I began to grow into an adult I realized how much of a hero Roberto
Clemente really was. He was not just a great baseball player, but more importantly, he was a great human
being. Roberto got on that plane to help take much needed relief supplies to the people of Nicaragua,
which had just suffered through a devastating earthquake. Roberto Clemente decided to spend his New
Years Eve day trying to do something to help people suffering and in need. He could’ve just simply stayed
home with his family during the holidays, but instead chose to get on a plane to help people in need.

I became a Roberto Clemente’s fan because of his superb baseball skills, but it was because of his care,
dedication and service to others that he became my hero for life. I adopted his jersey number as my favor-
ite number and it remains so to this day. It was part of my call sign for the past twenty years when I was
a helicopter pilot in the United States Army. But, Roberto Clemente also helped me to see that I had three
other heroes in my life, my father, mother and Jesus. All of them had the same thing in common; they
all have had a profound impact on my life. Roberto because of his baseball skills and generosity towards
others in need, my mother and father because of the true love and dedication that they have shown me
throughout my life, and Jesus because of his ultimate gift of love that he has given me and the rest of the
world, eternal life.
Campus Ministry
(cont. from previous page) - Number 21 will always have a very important sig-
nificance in my life because of the man that wore it, and most importantly the lesson that one man showed a young
boy many years ago. A true hero is one that impacts your life positively and lays down his or her life for others.
Given that definition of a hero we might begin to narrow our list of true heroes in our lives, and truly discern that
the most important heroes in our lives are not those that are famous because of their talents and popularity, but are
those that show us how to be better human beings and how to love and serve others. When we use that definition
to identify our heroes in our own lives we might be forced to narrow our list down dramatically. I think that we
might be able to narrow the list to a handful of people. I also think that the people on that list might be the ones
that are close to you on a daily basis. I might even guess that they might be your mother and father or another
family member along with the only one that has given his life for your salvation, Jesus!

So, maybe you have a favorite number because of a sports personality that has become your favorite player. If so,
then I hope that he can also become your human hero for the rest of your life like Roberto became for me. If you
do not have a favorite number yet, then let me make a suggestion to you, #33!

Rifle Team Roster Finalized

Rifle team is ready to start our training for our season schedule which begins in January. We’ve come back
healthy from last year, and returning members and JV members are ready. As always, we have a tough schedule,
but we expect much from the team!

We had 37cadets sign up to try out for the team, unfortunately we have only eight slots on the varsity team!
We will run JV training and competitions after varsity season has ended. Team members for varsity this year
include:

Seniors Juniors Sophomore Freshmen

Corey Chu (Captain) Cedric Gaines Zach Holland Benjamin Cannoles
Sam Kalan Fulton Hodges
Conner Kreide
Andrew Rockwell

With the JV program not starting training until the end of Varsity season (end
of March), there will be a long wait. We have fourteen cadets biting at the
bit to get started in JV; that’s two teams worth of future varsity members! JV
Matches, though not yet scheduled, will be against Groves St. Vincent’s and
Windsor Forest in May. The Rifle Team Schedule is available online at www.
thebc400.com on the events calendar and also in last month’s edition of The
Banner.

to Benedictine. Annual contributions are limited to a maximum
of $1,000 for individuals, $2,500 for married couples filing jointly
and $1,250 for married filing separately. C Corporations are per-
mitted to redirect up to 75% of the state tax liability.
