Worksheet # 5 On Forces and Motion

This document contains 9 physics problems related to forces and motion. It provides calculations for: 1) How long and far it takes an elephant to stop based on its mass, speed, and friction. 2) Whether a helicopter will rise, fall, or hover based on its mass and upward force. 3) Whether a boy picking up groceries will exceed the bag's strength based on mass, force, and acceleration. 4) How long and far it takes to stop a van from an initial speed based on its mass, braking force, and acceleration.

Physics IA Worksheet # 5 on Forces and Motion

1. Dumbo the flying elephant approaches a landing strip with a speed of 20 m/s. If his feet
produce a coefficient of friction of 0.75 with the dirt, and his mass is 750 kg, how many
seconds does it take him to stop ? How far will he have traveled in this time ?

2. A helicopter having a mass of 20,000 kg produces an upward force of 210,000 N against

the air. Will the helicopter rise, fall, or hover ? If you think the copter will accelerate,
find its rate of acceleration.

3. One fine day in the city of Gotham, youthful ward Dick Grayson bounds down the
steps of his home just in time for lunch. Aunt Harriet, who is just bringing in the
groceries, asks for some help. Cheerfully, Dick picks up the brown paper bag
containing 2 gallons of milk from rest with a uniform acceleration of 5 m/s2. If the
milk jugs have a total mass of 7.5 kg and the bursting strength of the paper bag is 100 N,
is Dick being a bit over-exuberant, or is everything OK ?

4. Driving down the road at a speed of 25 m/s, the driver of a Dodge minivan slams on
the brakes to avoid a squirrel. If the force applied by the brakes is 5,000 N, and the mass
of the van is 1675 kg, what length of time will be required to stop the van, and how far
will it go while stopping ?

5. James wants to move his stalled car out of an intersection, so he hops out and starts
pushing on it. If the coefficient of static friction of the auto’s wheel bearings is 0.02, and
the mass the the car is 2,000 kg, will the car accelerate, or will it stand still if James
pushes with a force of 600 N ? If the car accelerates, find its rate of acceleration.

6. Use Newton’s third law to answer the following: Your acceleration caused by gravity is
9.81 m/s 2 and your mass is 75 kg. Find the force of gravity on your body. If the mass of
the earth is 6 x 1024 kg, what will the acceleration of the earth be as a result of your
interaction ?

7. A ball is thrown upward at 35 m/s. How long does it take to reach its maximum
height ? How high it this height above the point of its release ?

8. A car is traveling at 25 m/s in a school zone. Is this unreasonable ?

A nearby police officer accelerates after the speeder as soon as he goes past, at a rate of
2.5 m/s 2. How much time will it take for the police officer to equal the velocity of the
speeder ? Will he have caught the speeder at this time, and if not, what total time will
be required for him to do so ?

9. Draw a position-time and a velocity-time graph for a ball thrown upward at 20 m/s.
Neglect the effects of air resistance.

1. Ff = 5626 N, a = - 7.5 m/s/s, t = 2.7 sec, and distance = 27 meters 2. a = 0.5 m/s/s
3. Fup = 113 N, which means Dick really ought to relax a little bit, or at least ask for paper AND plastic
4. a = -3 m/s/s, t = 8.3 sec, distance = 104 m. 5. Ff = 400 N, yes: a = 0.1 m/s/s
6. 734 N, on both, aearth = 1.22 x 10-22 m/s/s; however.
7. time of max height is 3.5 s; max height is 61 m 8. Yes ! 10 seconds, No, that will take 20 seconds.
