Asia Pacific Group
POPULATION GROWTH
The Asia Pacific Group will be the largest throughout the first
50 years of the new century, but it will not be the youngest nor
the fastest-growing. The two largest players, China and India,
together made up 72.6 percent of the population of this region in
1995. Despite slowing growth, these two countries will still
represent over 70% of the groups population for the foreseeable
future.
The sheer size of India and China mean that no regional
generalizations make sense.
China is aging quickly and its population growth is slowing,
primarily because of its one-child policy implemented in the
1980s. Even so, it is not an "old" country. In 1995, 34.5 percent
of the population was 19 or younger. Today, nearly one-third of
the population is aged 19 and younger, and even by 2015,
26.4 percent will fall into this age group. In a country the size of
China, that means more than 400 million consumers were aged
19 and younger in 1995 and, despite the falling percentage, there
will be 373 million people under age 20 in 2015 70 million
more people than are projected to be in the entire U.S. population
that same year.
Indias population is not aging as quickly. Indian life
expectancy is much lower than for the Chinese and its family
planning policies have not been as stringent. In India in 1995,
45 percent of the population was aged 19 or younger, a total of
420 million people. In 2000, there are about 440 million people
under 20 years of age, but the share of the population will be
slightly lower at 43.3 percent. By 2015, the share of the
population that is aged 19 and younger is projected to decline to

37.8 percent, but will still represent 421.7 million people,

giving India nearly 50 million more people than China in this
age group.
There are several other countries to watch in the Asia Pacific
Group. Population growth in the Philippines will remain
well over 1 percent through 2015, when the Philippines will
be approaching 100 million people compared to 76 million
today. In 1995, 33 million people or (49.2 percent of the
population) were aged 19 and younger. By 2015, even
though it will have declined to 38.9 percent under age 19,
that will still be almost 39 million people.
But compare the Philippines with Japan, where the aging
population is growing very rapidly and the overall population
will begin to decline as well. Even though the Philippines
will have a population somewhat smaller than Japan's, its
youthful population will outnumber Japanese youth. In 1995,
Japan had 33.6 million people aged 19 and younger. Just five
years later this age group has shrunk to 28.6 million people in
Japan versus 36 million in the Philippines.
By 2015, the contrast will be even more dramatic. The
Philippines is projected to have 39 million people aged 0 to
19 that year, compared with Japan's 24 million.
Other countries that bear watching closely include
Bangladesh and Vietnam. Although they are not among
TCCCs 50 largest, they are important prospects of the
future. In 2000, Bangladesh has a population of about
129 million; by 2015, it is expected to have reached
162 million. Today, nearly 48 percent of the population are
age 19 and younger or about 61.8 million people. By 2015,

the share of young people will have shrunk to about 38 percent,

but the group will still be about the same size 61.7 million
people.
The situation in Vietnam is similar. In 2000, the population is
79.8 million, 44 percent of whom are aged 19 and younger, or
about 35 million people. By 2015, there will still be nearly
32 million people aged 19 and younger, but they will represent
only about 33 percent of the total population.

URBANIZATION
Excluding Japan, Asia is expected to have 18 megacities
(having 10 million or more people) by 2015. Ten of the
world's largest 15 cities will be in this region. They are
shown below. Dhaka and Karachi didn't even make the top
15 list in 1995, when Delhi with its 9.9 million people was
the smallest city to make the list.

these cities for 1995 to 2005, compared with the average annual
growth rate for the country it is in. Note that even in fastgrowing countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan, city growth
outstrips overall growth.

Effects of AIDS: The Asia Pacific Group has not been as

negatively affected by AIDS as Africa. In a few countries
such as Thailand where the sex for hire industry is
widespread, AIDS is a problem and will have a significant
effect on the population, especially the very young.
However, the region is more likely to be affected by the ill
effects of climatic change (drought and famine), monsoons in
countries like Bangladesh, earthquakes, or the diseases that
result from a lack of sanitary systems to provide clean
drinking water and sewage disposal as populations surge.
These 10 cities are merely the tip of the iceberg. Within the Asia
Pacific region in 2000, there are about 195 cities with population
of 750,000 or more and still this number of cities represents a
small proportion of the overall population in most of these
nations.

53% of the worlds population, 3.1 billion people, live
in the Asia Pacific Group. The population of the Asia
Pacific Group doubled between 1950 and 1985
dominated by rapid growth in China and India.
Although population growth rates have slowed
somewhat, the region is still growing at more than 1%
per year (see Chart #3).
Starting with the one child rule in China, birth rates
in the region have declined substantially. The decline
in birth rates will result in a slowing and eventual
decline in the 10-19 age group in the Asia Pacific
Group. Currently around 600 million people, by 2020
the group may shrink to 550 million. For perspective,
the 10-19 age group alone in Asia Pacific is almost
two times as large as the entire population of the
Western European Group. As birth rates continue to
drop, the population in the under 20 segments will
show small declines (see Chart #4).
By 2010 all the under 30 age segments in the Asia
Pacific Group will be essentially the same size (see
Chart #2). By 2050 this will be true for all age
segments under 60.

JAPAN
Japan is now the "oldest" country in Asia. In 1950,
the median age in Japan was 22 years; by 2050, it
will be about 49 years.
In 1995, Japan had a population of 47 million people
under age 30. By 2010 these age groups are
expected to contain less than 39 million people, a
decline of about 18% (see Chart #4). The most
significant losses will be in the 20-29, followed by
the10-19 age group.
By 2010, 29% of the population will be over 60 years
of age with 42% over age 50 (see Table).

Asia Pacific Group
Australia is the largest country in Oceania. Overall

population is still expanding and will reach 20 million
between 2005 and 2010 (see Chart #3).
Australia has an age structure that resembles
European countries (see Charts #1 and #2), but
immigration will ensure continued growth. Between
2000 and 2010, the most rapidly growing population
segments will be over age 50 (see Chart #4), but the
under 30 age groups will remain essentially stable.

Population growth in China has slowed significantly,

in both absolute terms and relative to the rest of the
region. In 1995, China with a population of 1.2 billion
people represented almost 36% of the population in
the Asia Pacific Group. By 2010, with a population of
1.3 billion people, China is expected account for
about 33%.
Between 1950 and 1990 China's population more
than doubled. Since the introduction of the one child
rule, birth rates in China have plunged leaving a
baby boom like ghost in the population distribution
(see Chart #1). A bias toward sons has produced a
structural imbalance in the population distribution
which can be seen by comparing the number of
males vs. females in the under 20 age groups in 2010
(see Chart #2). Between 2000 and 2010, all age
segments under 40 years of age are expected to
shrink (see Chart #4).
The overall growth rate in China has already fallen to
less than 1% per year and will continue to decline.
From 1990 to 2050, Chinas population is expected to
increase only 28%.

Population is expanding rapidly (see Chart #3).

Between 1990 and 2040, the population will more
than double. By 2050, the Philippines will have a
population of 130 million, larger than Japan is today.
Like much of the rest of SE Asia, fertility rates are
dropping. The 0-9 year old cohort of 2010 is
expected to be about the same size as in 1995 (see
Charts 1 and 2). As a result, the 19 and under age
group is only expected to grow by 6.4% between
2000 and 2010, with almost all that growth occurring
in the teen segment, which will expand by 12% (see
Chart 4). After 2010, the continuing decline in birth
rates will mean that the teen segment will be about
the same size (about 18 million) in 2050 as it is today.

THAILAND
In the 1970's, Thailand added more than 1 million
people each year. By the mid 2000's, annual
population gains will be on the order of about
1/2 million people per year.
The group born between 1970 and 1980 may prove
to be the largest cohort in Thai history. This will lead
to essentially no further growth in the size of the
population under age 30 (see Chart #4). As a result,
the population under age 30 will be slightly smaller in
2050 (25.4 million) than today (32.1 million).
Falling birth rates and increased longevity will change
Thailand from a country where only 8.6% of the
population was over 50 years of age in 1995 (see
Chart #1) to having 42% of the population over age
50 by 2050.

India is growing more rapidly than China and should

eventually overtake China in population. By 2050,
India is expected to have a population of 1.53 billion
vs 1.47 billion in China.
While India has never had the government-mandated
family planning seen in China, the brakes are being
put on population growth. Population doubled
between 1950 and 1985 (+2.2% average annual
growth rate) and is expected to double again between
1985 and 2050 (but at a much slower +1.1% average
annual rate). The steady decline in the rate of
increase can be seen in Chart #3. Between 2000
and 2010, the 0-9 age group will actually decline in
numbers. This is a real change for India and marks
the beginning of a new era. If current trends
continue, by 2050 the 0-9 age group could be 10%
smaller than it is today.

The fertility rate has dropped from 5.4 births per
woman in 1950 to 1.7 in the early 90s. This is below
the replacement threshold. Median age rose from
19.2 years in 1950 to 29.2 in 1995, and is expected to
reach 44 years in 2050.
Total population will continue to grow slowly (see
Chart #3) but at ever decreasing rates of growth.
There will be little or no growth in the any of the
under 30 cohort groups between 2000 and 2010 (see
Chart #4) as Korea approaches a population with little
size difference between the cohorts (see Chart #2).

Malaysia has an official policy to promote population

growth. Nevertheless the fertility rate has dropped
from 6.8 births per woman in 1950 to 3.2 births in
1995, and is expected to continue to decline toward
2 births per woman. This sharp drop in births per
woman has already resulted in lower population
growth rates (see Chart #3). By 2015, the population
will be growing at about the rate of 1990.
The declining birth rate will show up first in the 0-9
age group. By 2010, the 0-9 age group will be
smaller than the 10-19 age group (see Chart #2)
resulting in a decline in that age group (see
Chart #4).
Although population growth rates slow, they do not
contract. As a result, Malaysia will have a population
of about 37 million in 2050, 66% larger than in 2000.
Despite this growth, the under 30 population will be
little changed from its size in 2000.

This is the world's fourth most populous country with

over 210 million inhabitants. By 2015, Indonesia will
approach 240 million people roughly the size of the
U.S. in 1990. Although the rate of population growth
has already begun to fall (see Chart #3) and will
continue to fall over the next 50 years, by 2050
Malaysia will have a population of about 310 million
people.
As birth rates fall, the number of births each year is
about the same as the year before despite the fact
that there are more women of childbearing age. This
shows itself in similarly sized 10 year cohort groups.
Chart #1 shows the beginning of this process. In
1995, the 10-19 age group was only slightly larger
than the 20-29 age group and about the same size as
the 0-9 age group. By 2010 (Chart #2), all the
under 40 age groups will be about the same size.
As a result, there is little change in the size of any of
the under 30 age groups between 2000 and 2010
(see Chart #4).

Recent growth in Hong Kong is fueled by immigration

from the mainland. Hong Kong has already begun to
age only 35% of the population is under age 25
compared to 44% of the population in the P.R.C.
Hong Kong will continue to grow after 2000, but at a
much slower pace than during the past 10 years (see
Chart #3). Overall population, which was grew from
5.7 million in 1990 to 6.9 million in 2000, will peak at
about 7.7 million in 2020 before contracting to about
6.6 million in 2050.
The declining birth rates will lead to declines in the
younger cohort groups between 2000 and 2010 (see
Chart #4) and a population distribution with a marked
inverted pyramid shape by 2010 (see Chart #2).
