BTS Hotel Application Note

Increased Demands / Increased Opportunities

Due to increases in cellular phone, and data usage, the demand for more capacity in urban areas is ever increasing. Operators must increase the number of available cells to these areas to meet these capacity demands. With the increased number of cells, each cell is required to support a smaller area to minimize interference between adjacent cells. The service providers need a solution that will enable them to increase the number of cells, while minimizing costs on equipment, real-estate, and human resources.

Solution
This Remote Site Hosting application note describes implementation of Foxcoms BTS Hotel Solution, which is based on Foxcoms Distributed Antenna System (DAS) technology. In this configuration, Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) that are centralized at one location serve multiple Remote Sites. The Base Station Equipment Room and each Remote Site are connected by a single fiber.

Advantages and Benefits

Real-estate savings
Foxcoms Remote Unit, which provides superior performance, efficiency and flexibility, can be installed outdoors on a pole together with the Service Antennae. Acquiring only one location for a Base Station Equipment Room and poles for multiple Remote Sites is highly cost-effective for cellular operators compared to acquiring a number of locations for multiple Remote Sites. It is difficult to find available BTS sites in urban areas. In addition, the construction of an indoor BTS room (at each Remote Site) using traditional BTS installation methods, and operating costs of multipleBTS sites can be very expensive. Outdoor installation of Foxcoms Remote Site equipment and antennae on a pole saves on Equipment Room expenses.

Multi-Base Station savings

Today, each operator must provide services to end-users using multiple technologies, such as GSM900, GSM1800, UMTS2100 and LTE. This means several BTSs must be installed at each Remote Site. The room housing the BTSs must be large enough to accommodate all this equipment, which translates to more required resources from the operator. Foxcoms system can transfer multiple technologies over a single fiber that is connected from the Base Station Equipment Room to the Remote Site. The result is a substantial savings of the initial cost of the BTSs (CAPEX), as well as installation and commissioning of the BTSs at each Remote Site.

Scalability (Capacity / Traffic)

Foxcoms system can be easily upgraded to support additional users (capacity) at a single location. Moreover, switching from mini-BTS to macro-BTS is relatively easy and low-cost when done at one location. The scalability advantage is important to operators in the customer acquisition phase. However, even after the acquisition phase, the ability to balance traffic from location A to B to support increased capacity is very important.

Future proof
The cellular arena is changing all the time. New technologies appear faster than in any other arena. Therefore, the flexibility of concentrating cellular equipment, like BTSs and backhaul lines, in one location (Base Station Equipment Room) is a great advantage for upgrading.

Transmission line savings (local aggregation)

Saving transmission lines for all Remote Sites can result in substantial savings each year. Foxcoms solution only requires transmission lines in the Base Station Equipment Room. Aggregation of transmission lines in the Base Station Equipment Room can be utilized, resulting in savings on Operational Expenditures (OPEX). For example: If 5 BTSs are installed in the Equipment Room, not all 5 lines are used 100% of the time. Therefore, an operator can use only 3 transmissions lines to aggregate the traffic from the 5 BTSs.

Reduced maintenance and operation costs

Maintenance and operation of each site costs money. By using compact, outdoor equipment at each Remote Site, operation costs are reduced. The use of more BTS Hotel applications in the network will decrease maintenance and operation costs dramatically.

Flexible site location

The distance between the Equipment Room and Remote Site is calculated according to optical loss. The maximum optical loss supported by Foxcoms system is equivalent to 20Km (optional 40Km). This substantial distance affords great flexibility to the acquisitions department when selecting locations for Remote Sites. Having greater freedom to choose a Remote Site location leads to more location possibilities and results in reduced pricing of the space. Moreover, the flexibility of a better location results in higher performance for the cellular network.
