Building a systematic approach to quality, excellence and customer service
Quality
Titan is proud of its ability to produce a quality product. This is made possible by a self-contained, in-house, fully-equipped test lab. Titans lab performs tensile, elongation, hardness, gravity, volume swell, oven aging, ozone, cold flex, burst, proof pressure, impulse cycle and many other tests. Quality is an ongoing commitment at Titan. We continually test our products to improve their performance in the field. The result is a higher quality product.
Production
Titans South Gate (Los Angeles) facility operates several Titandesigned arana spiral machines. All Titan elastomers are formulated in house with years of research, development, and experience behind them. We do all our own extruding and calendering. Several extruders are used to produce a one piece SEAMLESS tube for all specifications. Seamless extruded tubes eliminate delamination which is common in plied or wrapped tubes. Production sizes range from 1/2 to 85/8 I.D. in 100 foot lengths. Titans hand built hose divisions in South Gate, CA and Salisbury, NC are capable of producing custom lengths in sizes up to 48 I.D. with special custom manufactured ends.
History
From its humble beginning in 1976 until today, Titan has not deviated from the founders primary objective....design, fabricate and sell the finest hose and rubber products in the world. The company started out producing close-tolerance extrusions for a number of other fabricators. Gradually, hose building equipment was designed and assembled. By the late 70s, Titan produced a large diameter hose product line utilizing the most up to date manufacturing technology. The highly automated, yet versatile, spiral equipment was named Arana, or spider in Spanish. Less than a decade after installing the first production line, the demand for Titan hose products was so great that a second manufacturing plant was built in Spring, Texas. Today, the Spring plant has more than double the capacity than what was originally installed. Titans numerous Arana lines produce millions of feet of hose each and every year for customers in every part of the globe. Currently, Titan manufactures over 375 different styles of hose in over 30 sizes. One of Titans strengths is its ability to supply both machine and hand built hose. The hand built hose products are fabricated in Titans South Gate, CA and Salisbury, NC plants. Titans extensive product line is backed up with dedicated professionals who are passionate about hose. The senior management team at Titan has more than 175 years of hose, technical, production, sales, development, marketing and quality assurance experience.

TITANS TECHNICAL TIPS FOR HOSE SELECTION AND MAINTENANCE
T I P S
Before selecting a hose, Titan suggests considering the STAMP series of questions.
What size hose and coupling end styles are needed to assure efficient safe transfer of product? What is the temperature of the material that will be transferred? What is the application the hose will be used in? What type of product will be transferred through the hose? What working pressure will the hose be used at? Does your hose require vacuum service?
Throughout this catalog, Titan has attempted to supply you with the product information needed to properly select a hose. Titan offers a chemical resistance chart in the technical section of this catalog for your convenience so that you can be sure the elastomer of the hose is suitable. Listed below are some helpful tips to extend the service life of your hose.
Safety
Special note: Working pressures are recommended in accordance with RMA design safety factors at ambient temperatures. Do not operate outside hose temperature limits. Even within hose temperature limits, end fittings and hose size can impact performance at higher temperatures. For your safety, Titan recommends the following working pressure reduction at the following temperatures.
80 to 150 F. - Reduce working pressure by 15%. 150 to 225 F. - Reduce working pressure by 30%. Over 225 F. - Reduce working pressure by 50%.
Titan Industries continually strives to make design and material improvements in its hoses and reserves the right to change specifications without prior notice.

The use of cam and groove couplings with todays XLPE and UHMWPE calls for greater retention. EVER-TITEs Perma-TiteTM couplers and adapters meet this requirement. Perma-TiteTM couplers and adapters are available for most common methods of permanent attachment, crimping or swaging. The use of EVER-TITEs ferrule (patent pending) or economical crimp sleeves provides one of the best connection systems available. EVER-TITEs Perma-TiteTM couplings have been tested to meet and exceed the Rubber Manufacturers Associations liquid hose pressure safety requirement of four times the working pressure without leaking.

itan has developed a universal coupling system called Split-Lok. Designed for large bore material transfer hose. This two piece reusable coupling system allows the user to fabricate assemblies in the field. Our unique wire screen designed steel couplings are anti-corrosion coated and attached externally with compression bolts. As the bolts are secured in place, they provide excellent coupling retention because they are designed to match the exterior contour of either corrugated or smooth cover hose. The net result is a custom fit, full flow smooth bore coupling system that can be continuously used at 150 PSI. Available in smooth steel construction or corrugated aluminum design.

The following pages list elastomers commonly used by Titan for manufacturing hose products. Beneath each elastomer(synthetic rubber material) is a listed chemical rating. This rating is based on application temperatures not to exceed 700 F (21.10 C) unless otherwise specified. The percentage of concentration of the chemical is highly significant.
(eg. Hydrochloric acid 5% versus 37%) Our recommendation may vary considerably based on this information. These charts are offered as guides only. There are many variables to be considered with each application. If there is any question about the resistance of a listed elastomer, please contact Titans technical staff at 800-242-HOSE(4673).

lexibility and minimum bend radius are important factors in hose design and selection if it is known that the hose will be subjected to sharp curvatures in normal use. When bent at too sharp an angle, hose may kink or flatten in the cross-section. The reinforcement may also be unduly stressed or distorted and the hose life shortened. The hose should be able to conform to the smallest anticipated bend radius without overstress. The minimum bend radius is generally specified for each hose in this catalog and is the radius to which the hose can be bent in service without damage or appreciably shortening its life. The radius is measured to the inside of the curvature.
Textile reinforced hose has a tendency to kink as the bend radius is reduced. Generally, a helix wire is used when a hose must withstand severe bends without flattening or kinking. Some indication of relative hose flexibility can be determined from the manufacturers minimum bend radius which is a major factor in flexibility. Different hose constructions may require significantly different forces to attain the same minimum bend radius. Generally, the preferred hose is the more flexible hose, provided all other properties are essentially equivalent. There are exceptions to this as in sand blast hose where minimizing the bending in service increases hose life.
Formula to determine minimum hose length given hose bend radius and degree of bend required:
A 360
Thus, the bend must be made over approximately 66 of hose length. The bend radius must be equal to or greater than the rated minimum bend radius. Bending the hose to a smaller bend radius than minimum may kink the hose and result in damage and early failure.
x2
B=L
where:
A = Angle of bend B = Given bend radius of hose L = Minimum length of hose to make bend (Bend must be made
equally along this portion of hose length.) = (Pi) 3.14 Example: to make a 60 bend at the hoses rated minimum bend radius of 1900 mm (63)
The minimum bend radius is measured to the inside of the curvature.
60 360 60 360
x 2 x 3.14 x 63(6.25) = 66

The effects of oil on rubber depend on a number of factors that include the type of rubber compound, the composition of the oil, the temperature and time of exposure. Rubber compounds can be classified as to their degree of oil resistance based on their physical properties after exposure to a standard test fluid. In this RMA classification, the rubber samples are immersed in ASTM No. 3 oil at 100C for 70 hours. (See ASTM Method D-471 for a detailed description of the oil and the testing procedure.) As a guide to the user of hose in contact with oil, the oil resistance classes and a corresponding description are listed.
ubber hose is used to convey petroleum products both in the crude and refined stages. The aromatic content of refined gasoline is often adjusted to control the octane rating. The presence of aromatic hydro-carbons in this fuel generally has a greater effect on rubber components than do aliphatic hydrocarbons. Aromatic materials in contact with rubber tend to soften it and reduce its physical properties. For long lasting service, the buyer of gasoline hose should inform the hose manufacturer of the aromatic content of the fuel to be handled so that the proper tube compound can be recommended for the specific application.
Physical Properties After Exposure to Oil Volume Change Maximum Class A (High oil resistance) .......................+25% Class B (Medium-High oil resistance) .........+65% Class C (Medium oil resistance)................+100%

ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Conductive Hose
Static wires and conductive rubber components are used in hose to prevent static electricity build-up and a discharge as a spark. Electrical engineers differ in opinion on the effects of static electricity and the means of dissipating it. In handling gasoline and other petroleum-based liquids, recognized national associations and companies have conflicting opinions on the need for conductive hoses. Until a consensus is reached among all associations, laboratories and users, and a standard practice is established, it is essential that the user determine the need for static bonded hose based on (a) the intended use of the hose, (b) instructions from the companys Safety Division, (c) the insurer, and (d) the laws of the States in which the hose will be used. Some types of hose include a body reinforcing wire. This wire can be used for electrical continuity provided that proper contact is made between it and the hose coupling. This can be done by extending the body wire to the hose and attached to the couplings. In non-wire reinforced hose, a static wire can be included in the hose body.
Non-Conductive Hose
In some specific applications, especially around high voltage electrical lines, it is imperative for safety that the hose be non-conductive. Unless the hose is designed particularly to be non-conductive and is so branded, one dare not conclude that it is non-conductive. Many black rubber compounds are inherently and inadvertently conductive. Nonconductive hose is usually made to a qualifying standard that requires it to be tested to verify the desired electrical properties. The hose is usually non-black in color and clearly branded to indicate it is designed for nonconductive application. Unless a hose is described specifically and clearly branded to be conducting or non-conducting, it must be assumed that the electrical properties are uncontrolled.
